Summer Whites: Style Guide for Women Over 50

Summer Whites: Style Guide for Women Over 50

It’s officially summer! Yay, that means it’s time to lighten things up. I have tons of black in my wardrobe and rely on it to be easy, classic and timeless. I’m happy to find white has these same characteristics…with the added bonus of looking fresh, clean, and cool. Summer whites are taking center stage for me. Here’s some tricks I use to help white and lighter garments look better.

Welcome to your monthly style guide for women over fifty. Pam Lutrell, of Over 50 Feeling 40 and I are sharing our best style tips to bring you a month of head turning style.

White is fresh for summer.

I love these Slim Ankle, Stretch-Twill pants from WHBM.

Carefully check your white garments from last year. Deodorant frequently yellows the underarms of white T-shirts and tops. No amount of bleach fixes this so they should be replaced. White needs to look clean and crisp. It is the least forgiving color but nothing looks quite as fresh.

Removing dark labels from light colored clothing prevents them from showing through

My fabulous white hat and long duster are from White House Black Market.

Call me anal, but labels that are visible through clothing are not my thing. I admit this detail is hard to see in these images, but I assure you this black label showed through my white sweater. So as usual, I used a seam ripper to carefully remove the guilty culprit.

A nude bra is more flattering and invisible under white tops

I was recently asked how to hide your bra under a white top. The answer is to wear a nude bra, not white. It needs to be your shade of nude…not a generic beige.

I could have worn a camisole to hide my bra…but you’d have seen it’s outline…which is fine if you want to highlight your lingerie. At 59, I don’t, so I invest in bra’s and camisole’s in my nude shade.

Style Tip – Your nude lingerie needs to match your skin tone.

Invest in nude bras and camisoles to wear under summer whites

This pretty WHBM blouse has a high-low hem that’s feminine and flattering.

So my style tip for the first month of summer is, wear white! It’s classic, modern looking and always stylish.

I want to share what I overheard from inside my dressing room at White House Black Market last week. “Only buy it if it makes you feel wonderful, because that builds your confidence.”  I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Do you wear much white?

Have a fabulous weekend and I’ll see you back here for Style Sweet Spot on Sunday!

I need to wear more white! On top only for me.

My shade of nude under white is actually a very pale pink. I made this change and it makes all the difference.

Love white and just purchased a long, lightweight cover for summer. It flows when I move. Love it.

Summer = white. My MR took me out for birthday dinner this week. I wore white slacks, white tank and blue swing jacket. I now have to get a new white tank. I splashed red clam broth right in front. Memo….Wear Black when going out for Italian.

Lol. So true Lesley! My whites are like homing devices for red Italian sauce!

I’ve only recently started wearing white. When I was younger, it made me look washed out, but as my hair has taken on some silver highlights and I’ve learned to use make-up more effectively, I find that I can wear it now. Thanks for the tips!

Cool off-white is my most flattering white, but harder to come by so I adjust my makeup, like you:)

Love the outfit. I’m not quite ready for white yet. I would probably spill something on it. However, I’m getting tired of black and need some color.

White is tricky, but honestly spills show on every color. Maybe switch to some navy or brown to get away from black!

You wear hats well, you might want to do a blog on hats for different shape faces. Spring and summer is ideal hat weather!

Thanks! That’s a great idea for a blog post. I’ll do it. I love hats but am careful with my choices.

Too mature? I’ve heard it all now and I guess that makes it official, we are grown up 🙂 Some women like to play with colored lingerie showing through their tops. I’m just not one of them. Never has been.

NO I DONOT wear A LOT of white. Now if I lived down SOUTH I think I would wear MORE!As you stated it is hard to keep CRISP!

White knits are easier because they don’t have to be crisp 🙂

Love this look! White fedora is the perfect finishing touch.
