Pants to Wear Now and Later

I don’t know about you, but I wear more pants and jeans than skirts or dresses these days because they’re just so easy. They’re practical for my day to day activities and casual lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing more fun than dressing up for a show or special occasion, but for day to day living, pants are my favorite.

When I think back, I don’t think my granny even owned a pair of pants, at least I never saw her in a pair. Pants have also come a long way in terms of comfort. Brands are upping their comfort level with stretch waistbands, pull-on styling to eliminate the zipper and snaps, slimming panels and spandex in the fabric which allows the whole thing to move with you. Bending an stretching in pants has never felt so comfortable!casual outfit of black sweater and plaid pants from Talbots on Jennifer Connolly sitting on a cement wall

And let me tell you, stretch waistbands in pull-on styles have come a very long way from those early days of gathered elastic waistbands that added bulk and showed gathers at the waistline! They are slim to your waist; they don’t roll when you sit down, and they don’t leave lumps and bumps under your tops.

I’m wearing Talbots newest addition to their pants collection, the Essex Ankle. It has a wide smooth waistband that holds your tummy in, a well-proportioned silhouette and is the perfect lightweight fabric for early fall. The Glen Plaid is small, so it won’t overpower the petite among us, or make the plus size ladies look larger. All this and they’re machine washable!

Talbots prides itself on making pants you’ll love to (and can) live in. These new Essex Pants fit the bill perfectly. They’ll look fabulous dressed down with a soft tee adding a Jennifer Connolly wearing Talbots new essex pant with black sweater st street light

My figure is straight, but for you lucky gals with tinier waistlines, the curvy version is here. I wore mine with a Peplum Wrap Sweater to give my figure the illusion of a waistline.

Talbots pants are some of the comfiest I’ve worn. These Essex Pants are available in petite, misses, plus and plus petite. I’m wearing an 8 petite which is a tiny bit loose on me… which has me motivated to keep going to the gym;)

Right now Talbots is giving 25% off all regular priced pants and jeans for you to stock up or add these to your wardrobe.

Are you a fan of pull-on pants?

A big thank you to Talbots for partnering on this post. And thanks to you, my readers, for supporting the brands who work with A Well Styled Life.

My problem with pull-on pants is my small waist compared to my hips… nearly 8 to 10 inches difference. Even as a younger lady, I needed two sizes in a 2 piece swimsuit. I go for a larger size pants now because I cannot tolerate tight feeling pants. This makes pull-on pants just too big and a big gap with the waistband.

  2. I love your sweater, which looks so good with the pants you’ve chosen. That’s my style for making separates a little more formal. Perfect w/ my Pendleton straight wool skirt or dressy black trousers for a Sunday afternoon concert.

Ironically, given your comments on wearing pants in this post, this summer I have found myself wearing more skirts and dresses–very strange, given that for nearly 25 years, I’ve worn pants almost exclusively to work and to dine out.

This morning I was looking at the new Talbots pants and thinking that I should investigate them for European travel. The new lines sound comfortable and wearable.

  3. Would love to hear your impression of the sweater. So great looking.

    1. I love this sweater! I wraps easily and doesn’t gape in the front. The fabric is very soft and the shape is super flattering.

  4. Hi Jennifer. I am eager to try these pants at Talbots – we have one locally.
I wanted to thank you for the very valuable advice I get from your posts. Also, it appears that you have recently restyled your website. I think it looks great!

    1. Thanks, Lisa…the website always a work in progress…much like my hair;)

Good morning Jennifer. Would you be willing to disclose the name of the cute town in this post? I will be in California the end of October to visit my Aunt in the Sacramento area. We’re always looking for something new to see and your pics look appealing but not familiar so I’m thinking we haven’t been there yet. Thank you!

    1. These were taken in Old Town Roseville. Such an adorable place. Also be sure to visit Nevada City just up 80. Our favorite little town.

Thanks so much, Jennifer! Got them both on the list.

  6. The pull on pants have solved many issues for me. Other than the ease of wearing, I had become allergic to the metal in the closures of most pants. Not a pretty sight with blisters and itching. You are so right, not the pull ons of the past, so much more comfort and support now. By the way, I LOVE your necklace.

    1. I am a huge fan of pull-on pants. They’re smoother under tops and just so much comfier. Thank you about the necklace. It’s got a funny story.

Wow Jennifer, so glad I caught your pics this morning
with pull on slacks from Talbots. You look really nice in them! I plan on an outing to Charleston this week, hopefully, if the streets aren’t too flooded! The kitten heel black boots caught my eye, too, as that heel is my favorite these days. I, as well, wear mostly ankle pants in linen, jeans, and such. I used to wear dresses in earlier ages, but rarely do I see any that catches my eye enough to buy.
    Enjoy the remainder of summer!

    1. I’m sort of crazy about those boots too. I may need to add them to my wardrobe;) Have fun in Charleston.

I relate so much with your comments! I have gradually switched from wearing dresses and skirts to pants almost exclusively. Early in my career, I wore skirt suits every day. Now with pants and blazers, I have so many choices and I’m much more comfortable. Things have really changed! After seeing your post, I pulled two pair of plaid Talbots pants from my closet (very similar to the Essex) that I haven’t worn in a couple of years. I’m wearing a pair today. Your pictures reminded me of how smart they look and I remembered how easy it is to pair a fun top with plaid. Thanks, Jennifer! I’m always inspired by you.

    1. I’m so glad you pulled them out. It’s a perfect look for this time of year. Thank you for your kind words, Lezlie

  10. These pants are wonderful! Love Talbots pants…always have. They fit beautifully and they last! Classic!
