The Joy of Color: What I Wore

The Joy of Color: What I Wore

For a woman who has worn predominantly neutral colors for the last 30+ years, I’m surprised to discover how much I love this red cardigan. I don’t often buy things while doing  DRD, but this gave the siren call so I brought it home

Red is an emotionally intense color that easily overpowers my low-contrast, pale coloring. Color rules say I shouldn’t wear red. Of course, you know how I feel about style rules. They’re something to know… so you can ignore or follow at your will.  Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life with leopard print sunglasses and red sweater over blue pull-on jeans

I had no idea how often I would wear it, but it turns out to be a lot. Red coordinates beautifully with black, white, gray, blue, green, yellow, brown, leopard, etc…and pink. Yes, pink. It makes a strong statement and I’ve always wanted to wear it.

Red cardigan sweater, white shirt and blue jeans casual outfit on A Well Styled Life

This day I wore it with a no-iron white shirt, pull-on jeans, and black mules. Easy peasy and very comfy. I wore a bracelet with simple hoop earrings and added leopard framed sunglasses for a pop of print.

I could have worn a necklace but it felt like overkill with these large hoop earrings and print sunglasses. The sweater has a heavy texture so I didn’t want to add more to the mix. As I wear red more often I may rethink accessories.  Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing red sweater from Ann Taylor and leopard print sunglasses

Mules are a great season-spanning shoe. I reach for these black ones often because their faux alligator print adds a rich pattern to the simple shape.

The weather on our trip is gray, gray and grayer with glimpses of blue. I wish I’d brought this sweater to add a pop of color to my neutral outfits.

We board our cruise today and are hopeful it will actually sail. The waters are high in the Danube right now. Even those these boats are low, the captain of each ship decides if it can make it under the bridges or not.

Are you a fan of red? What do you mix it with?

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

Being a fan of colour, I do like red, providing it is a blue red. Still, I don’t reach for it as often as the pink and purple shades. I’m not sure why to be honest. Maybe just a personal preference.

Your sunglasses are amazing! As for red, I only tend to wear it in accessories but I do have a red summer top that I will wear with white.

Red has always been one of my favorite colors. I also have a red sweater to pack for our cruise this summer. Thanks for showing a good way to style it. I think i’ll wear mine this weekend to my 50th college reunion

I love red, but rarely wear the true Cherry Red. Instead, I tend to wear more burgundy or bluish rosy red. You look great!

I’m going to experiment with other shades too. This was such a surprise to me.

How walkable are mules? Can you walk a mile in them? I have not bought them because I do walk and feared that my toes would be curled up trying to “hold onto” the mules.

Was the white shirt being washed and dried overnite? If so, it’s an excellent buy!

Jennifer , I think you look fabulous in the red sweater .
You have a special gift in seamlessly meshing together
classic outfits from casual to dressy .It inspires me to
keep neutrals as a base with a flourish of colour to
pop the canvas ! May your trip be filled with all the blessings you deserve .

I’ve worn these for long days with some walking. In this trip, I’m only wearing them aboard the ship on this trip. I prefer mules that cover a larger portion of my foot which helps them stay on without having to grip so much.

My Mom loved red! She taught me that it was a “power” color. She wore it often and well. I find that as I get older, I’m wearing colors and prints that I would NEVER have worn in my younger days!

I think that happens to many of us as we age. We become more confident so experiment with more.

I also wear red. In this sweater look, the pockets are saggy and kill the overall wonderful attire.

I used to love wearing red (bluish undertones) and…I still ‘think’ I do… but frequently when I reach for red in my closet, it feels a bit bright or something. Not sure what’s happened. You look amazing in the red jacket! I’m 53 and I’ve read that bolder colors are fresh on “maturing” women so I hope I can just grab the red and feel vibrant more often!!

If your own coloring is fading,(ours do as we age) red may feel too strong on you. Try adding some deeper eyeshadow and blush to add more vibrant to your face.

This red is perfect for you! For me, it’s all about the hue…blood reds are great on me, but orange reds make it look sickly.

That is a truly great red! Looks great on you. I wear red often. Always looking for the perfect red shoes. Have fun on your cruise.

You should wear red more often! You look fabulous in it! Cherry red is one the most versatile colors and looks good on everyone. One of my go-to looks is a red tank under an open neutral blouse. And then I found great espadrilles with a bit of red on them.

On point as always! You are confirming my fear of river cruises. Seems as though all my “friends” either the water is to low and they have to be bussed and then sleep on ship or the bugs are bad and now too high! I am so in hopes you get to cruise as I need some confirmation to book one when we go to visit m our grandson and family stationed in Germany. Enjoy your trip!

Bonna just do some research on the best times to go–we’ve had great times on cruises, and water level has never been a problem. Since you have family living there it would be great to ask them about when the best weather occurs. We don’t tend to go during really rainy times though, being late October travelers. I’ve never had a problem with bugs anywhere in Europe I’ve traveled like we do here in the South. Mosquitos carry us away here. We can’t expect perfection in all our trips-it’s not that way when we travel here either! Some of the best times we’ve had have been because our original plans didn’t work out!

Love red, but prefer something in the brick shades. The cherry tones scream at me.
Good luck with your cruise. Will be interested to hear how your mules hold up while touring and if they are a problem staying on, like Anne said.

Red can certainly scream so it’s best to wear our most flattering version. The miles are being worn to walk long distances. Mostly aboard ship.

I love this red sweater! I too, wear red at times, in fact, I have a red sweater on this morning! Red is a very strong color that at times just seems to be the right thing to choose!

I hope it will be safe to set sail for you today.

I love red!!! On me and around me! Now you can buy that shade of red in lighter sweaters, tanks for a peek under things, and tees with a jacket. I balance it with red jewelry, red shoes, red purse – not all at once of course. But it is such an expressive, fun color & a little goes a long way. Try red flats with tan or white jeans, a white tee & your favorite Jean jacket. Then add a pop of red jewelry or scarf – viola!!!!

I think we have the same coloring. I think red looks great with blonde hair.I had a red asymmetrical zip sweater that I liked to wear during the holidays. I think I prefer dark red though. My current wardrobe is neutral with rose as an accent color.

Rose is a gorgeous tome. I haven’t seen too much of it around for the last few seasons. You have to snap up colors when they’re popular.

  21. May 30, 2019 / 9:01 am

I also love red! It is my go to color to give me confidence & positivity. For some reason I’m happier & have more fun then. I wear the red blue or dark red. I have many jackets, sweaters & shirts in these colors, they go with all my basic colors of pants & tops. Red is my happy color!

This jacket color is called Bollywood Pink on the AT website. It seems to be a raspberry, in the photos of you. And it looks stunning! Even though I’m fair, my coloration is warm based, and this blueish red would not work for me. Darling jacket, though.

Hello Jennifer! I wear red all of the time. I have dark hair and olive-y skin and it just brings out my coloring perfectly. I recall you mentioning a while back about how “powerful” red is and how many people won’t wear it. That’s the first time I EVER considered that. I just love red, as you mention it pairs with everything I also keep as wardrobe staple colors; black, navy, white, alligator, and it feels alive. You look lovely, from the photo the red looks to be on the “pink” side so maybe that’s why you finally love it, i pick reds on the “blue” side for me. Good luck leaving on your trip, and have fun…you can always shop for another red sweater in the meantime 🙂 Amy

In my 20’s I started wearing red as I was told I looked good in red. Like many others I stayed away from reds as I was shy and blushed fairly often and didn’t want to be mistaken for a tomato! On my recent trip I bought a red and white 3/4 sleeved top at Target. I love it and that pop of colour gives me a lift. Safe travels, Jenn!
