The Magic and Joy of Dear Friendships

The Magic and Joy of Dear Friendships

Sunday, our dinner group, met for our holiday party. We’ve been getting together with these couples for 30+ years and love them like family. Everyone brings an appetizer, salad or dessert so the hosts can concentrate on the main course. And what a main course it was!

None of these pictures are very clear because I was having too good of a time to worry about them. That’s a good thing!

We brought a special bottle of Merryvale Profile that we’d picked up during our trip to Napa last Friday along with cheese, grapes, and sliced Persimmon.

I was so busy visiting, I left the Brie in the oven longer than necessary, and it puddled pretty sloppily, but it tasted yummy.

I decorated the tray and Brie with sprigs of fresh Rosemary

Our hosts served raw Oysters as an appetizer. I’d always thought they would be slimy or gross so haven’t tried them before now. I can’t believe I waited until 60 to try Oysters for the first time! They’re wonderful!

The main course was the most delicious  Cioppino I have ever eaten. Ever!

It’s such a blessing to have these special friends who we’ve weathered the storms and joys of life with. We’ve supported each other through the deaths of siblings and parents, children’s struggles and blessings, and our own health crisis’ and triumphs.

That looks like a lovely gathering. The paella was with pasta? I am familiar with it with rice.
Yes, friends of long-standing become another family. My best friend and I met as 5- and 6-month-old babies–we lived a couple of houses apart. Still BFFs after many decades, and despite my moves around the world.

Yes, with pasta and it was fabulous 🙂 Wow, that is amazing you met her at 5 months old. My dearest girlfriend lives across the country and has for over 45 years. Distance doesn’t affect our closeness one bit!

You’re right, Judy! It was Cioppino. That’s what happens when I write a blog post at night!

Such a beautiful setting! I really like the image of you sitting on the leaf covered bench. Very Northern California.
We’ve had a tradition of champagne tasting with the same couple for ten years now. Sometimes other friends and family join us, and sometimes it’s just us. Living next door to one another, no one has to worry about being a designated driver. Like your gathering, it’s a gathering I look forward to each year.
    Happy Holiday Season!

What a wonderful tradition! I have a group of girlfriends that get together about once a month for an evening of wine, appetizers and chat. We’ve been doing this for over 20 years and like your group, we’ve seen each other through all the ups and downs of life. Very special.

I love the photo of you sitting with your glass of wine. You look so happy and relaxed and your outfit looks stunning against that backdrop!

Your girlfriend meetup sounds so wonderful, Elaine! Very special, indeed! I’ve always known how much I cherish these friends, but this year it felt so much more poignant. Life is so precious we must take the time to appreciate all the special times. Have a fabulous holiday!

I will ask my friend. I know she used the recipe from her son-in-law’s restaurant so it may be a family secret, Jude!

Looks fantastic! What a great tradition. What else does a person need, but good friends, food and wine and of course all those great discount opportunities.
