The Smart Way to Shop Sales

The Smart Way to Shop Sales

I’ve fallen down on my duties as a fashion blogger by not beating you to death with the Nordstrom sale. You’re welcome. I did promise I would share what I purchased for myself, which I finally did yesterday. I’ve had early access for a while but not the time to shop, so yesterday was my day.

The sale opens to the public today so if you’re not eligible for early access, never fear, there are still plenty of great things available.

The lure of lower prices can be a powerful enticement to buy. Things you would never consider at full price look more attractive on sale so it’s easy to overspend. When shopping a sale only buy things you:

  1. need
  2. love
  3. would buy at full price

I buy at this sale every year. Some years more heavily than others depending on my wardrobe. This year some needs have changed but my goal is the same. Buy items I will wear for several years that go with other things already in my wardrobe.

So here’s what I’ve ordered.

My need for coats is not severe but my new climate is colder so I wanted to find a new one.

This coat is right up my alley. It’s clean lines and unique button placement feel classic, modern and infinitely wearable. The besom pockets elevate the look over patch pockets so I could dress this up or down. It’s also available in a navy plaid and has a hefty discount.

This coat also appeals to me and the price point is amazing. I have a cardigan from this brand which has held up beautifully through multiple washings, so they’re well made. I wanted a faux fur coat this year but didn’t find one I liked in this sale.

I have many pairs of Eileen Fisher shoes because they’re comfortable, well made and hold up for years. I bought this pair in taupe. I do have several pair with this height heel, but if they feel a tad too high I will do this to them.

I also ordered these booties in the coco color which looks taupe to me. I have one pair of Earth shoes I bought 8-9 years ago which are really comfy, so I’m ready to try another.

The rain was epic last winter so I bought two pair of boots for the wet weather. This pair is waterproof and has a cushioned insole. I went up a half size to wear with socks so hope they fit.

My old rain boots either bit the dust or got lost in our move last year so I replaced them with these. I ordered them in both gray and ivory/rose because I’m not sure if they’ll look dumb on me in pink. Remember, free shipping and free returns! I like the concept of feminizing a rugged boot with color but the execution may not work…so I ordered two and will decide when I get home.

I ordered this wool and cashmere drape front cardigan in oatmeal. I love duster length cardigans and have been loving pale neutrals lately. I rebought this cozy cardigan because I beat my other one to death in commercial dryers. It’s perfect for lounging at home without wearing pajamas.

Finally, I ordered this drape front knit blazer in navy. It comes in eight colors but the navy is particularly pretty.

Here’s what I didn’t buy because I own something almost the same:

This ruana would be mine in a heartbeat. They’re a great alternative to cardigans and perfect for in-between temperatures.

This set. I have the small one and love it. I never check bags so would never use the large one.

I love this hat but have one that looks almost identical.

I have one almost identical in black and love it.

I didn’t buy anything in black. I have so much black in my wardrobe I began craving lighter colors last fall. This sale is the perfect opportunity for me to add them to my wardrobe.

I didn’t have time to check out the beauty specials but I will, because they often have sets I give during the holidays.

Did you shop at the sale?

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

I haven’t seen a single thing I am tempted by on the Nordy sale this time.

Some years are like that Kay. It’s smart to recognize and not buy.

I’m a Nordstrom cardholder, so was able to access the sale as soon as it began last Friday. I ordered two cardigans, from two different brands, and my order went through. The next day I got an email from Nordstrom saying one of my cardigans was “sold out” in every size. I am very unhappy about this, and frankly I don’t believe for a minute that it was sold out. I think this sweater was never available in the first place. Not only had I placed my order within the first hour of the sale, but when I got the “sold out” email from Nordstrom I checked the Madewell website (the sweater brand), and this item did not show up at all at their site. I don’t think this fall-season cardigan was available yet, anywhere. This was a real turn-off for me.

I would contact the manager of your local store. This sounds very strange. I’d wonder about this too. Perhaps a shipment didn’t arrive that they had expected. Don’t read too much into not seeing the sweater on the Madewell site. Brands often produce different garments for department stores to sell. Eileen Fisher does that routinely.
