I’m on the road again, this time for business in Houston. I’ve got a few days of meetings that’ll mean a more professional look than my normal routine calls for, plus warmer temperatures. This is shaping up to be the summer that won’t end!
Remember when everyone dressed up to fly? These days it’s more common to see sweats or shorts and flip-flops than casual, elegance. I prefer to dress nicely for airline travel because I know I get better treatment when I look nice and if there’s a free upgrade to be had…I want to look like I deserve it!
WEARING- JACKET | WHITE SHIRT | JEANS | SHOES |TOTE similar
An elegant jacket, classic jeans with a crisp white shirt, slip on shoes and a roomy tote make for an easy way to breeze through the airport in style.
I have a Nexus card so travel TSA Pre, which means no stripping down and keeping my shoes on through security. It’s a treat for sure and was well worth the hassle it was to get!
Ever notice how planes are stuffy when you board and near meat locker temperatures after you’ve been in the air a short time? During my last flight, I sat under a vent that never stopped blowing. Airline blankets just don’t compare to a cashmere wrap so this time I’m covering my bases.
This Multi Topstitch Jacket from Misook is part of their new fall collection and has lots of ease built in. The textured plaid fabric has a classic look in an elegant shape.
My tote holds a favorite cashmere wrap, a fun book, and my laptop. I’ll be sharing on Instastories during my trip so I’ll see you there!
How do you dress for airline travel? Do you notice getting better treatment the nicer you look?

Thanks Cathy!
I’d give you an upgrade…”wink, wink”!That jacket is just perfect on you.Happy travels!
Thanks Julie!
I always dress up to travel, shop, etc. I just feel better about myself, and I do feel the service is better. We live in a society where it’s okay to wear pajamas to shop…yikes. My sister and I looked thought we looked so chic for our overseas flight to a Viking River cruise. Unfortunately, Delta held us hostage for 2 days in the States, so we look like bedraggled refugees to Ellis Island by the time we got to France! So much for our first impression!!
Oh ouch!! I’m so sorry Roxanne. I’m hoping my husband and I can go on a Viking cruise next year for our 40th anniversary!! Your experience sounds awful.
Jennifer, Viking is fabulous…the best experience we ever had! Luckily, Viking booked our flights and handled the whole airline fiasco for us. They were able to get us out on a United flight (at no extra cost to us). So definitely let them book your flights. Also, we decided when we do another Viking trip, we will plan on arriving a day early just to add a cushion of time. We did the French chateaus and wine tour. Awesome!
That sounds fabulous!!! I love the idea of having some cushion time at the beginning too. Get over jet lag and explore the starting city
I am curious about your shoes as I am not a fan of backless shoes for any ‘trecking’ outside of wearing out to a resto or entertaining at home. I have walked through a lot of airports and can’t say that a backless mule would be practical…comfortable and easy to remove but not practical. What if you had to run or move quickly?” With cabins being so cold wouldn’t your feet freeze too? I can’t wear hosiery with mules and can’t imagine you do. Also I could see one of mine flying down an escalator or stair a la Cinderella:) I do like your travel out fit as it looks comfortable and you could easily switch out the jeans for black trousers or pencil skirt. Do you carry a purse as well or just the tote?
Great questions Allison. I always carry a pair of soft ballet flats in my tote in case things get “ugly”. I never wear hose with mules and have never had to run in my backless shoes. I must be lucky. My purse is always inside my tote bag.
I dress up always, regardless of where I am headed. I want others to know I respect them and myself when I present myself to the outside world. Inside the house, I am a bit more casual, but still try to be presentable because who knows when the doorbell will ring!
I’m with you Gloria! It makes me feel better about myself to look my best.
We have never applied for pre check, but always seem to have it on our ticket. Still, I have been stopped, had to remove my shoes, patted down, etc, etc. we can never figure out what sets off the alarms. I dress casually on flights with jeans and something warm on top, but I certainly don’t dress up to fly on filthy planes these days. I find if I am pleasant to airline personnel, they are usually pleasant also, depending on the airline. Air travel these days is like cattle being herded into a cattle car. My pet peeve are people and gate agents who ignore the carry on rules and people carrying on full size duffle bags, two suitcases and several large shopping bags. Overhead bin hogs!
I hear you Pam! I prefer aisle seats and get smashed into by many passing bags as they’re squished down the aisle! I think the experience changes with the airline these days. Some are better than others.
Wow, I love this look on you! What a classy travel outfit! This is a fun jacket..good job. Enjoy Houston!
Thanks Pam! It’s so comfy and elegant. I love that combo.
Jennifer, welcome to Houston 🙂 I would love to meet you if there’s time to spare 🙂
Hi Sheila! I so wish I had time!! Next time… I would love to meet you.
Welcome to our wonderful state. I live about 100 miles north of Houston. Hope your stay is pleasant and productive.
Thanks so much Elaine. It’s such a pretty town!
Yep… planes are always freezing cold once you’re up in the air! A cashmere wrap is a great idea! I usually wear a jacket of some kind, but it’s often not enough and I still manage to freeze on the trip. Safe travels! I love Houston… it’s my hometown and I miss it. Safe travels!!
Thanks Deb! I’m not sure why they’re so cold but I guess I prefer that to being over heated.
Nice look! I agree about presenting a nice appearance for travel. For me, I feel better when I try to look nicer. I think it is worth the effort for self-respect if nothing else. Have a good trip.
I totally agree Linda! It’s a matter of self respect as well as respect for those who work to help us travel.
