Dressing Room Diary- Trying on Better Proportions

Happy Friday ladies. The outfit I shared on Wednesday was a bit of a bomb for most of you. Very long tunics can be hard to wear (unless you’re tall) because they tend to make women look larger and shorter than they are. Today I have a try-on session at Chico’s with some items that have a better proportion.

If you’re new here, welcome. Dressing room diary is when I go into a store and try on new merchandise so you can see how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I’m 5’4″ and weigh around 136 lbs. I have an inverted triangle shape with broad shoulders, straight hips, and very few curves. I have a long torso and long arms so I usually wear one size larger on the top and the bottom.

As always, you can click the red text to learn more and shop the items.

WEARING – PAISLEY LAYERING SWEATER  – EMBELLISHED CUFF GIRLFRIEND JEANS

I’m finding a difference in many of the rises of Chico’s girlfriend jeans so I’ll call out the height of the ones that I do try on. My long torso does best in the highest ones possible, but if you have a shorter torso you may prefer rises that are shorter so they’re not right under your bra band. These embellished cuff jeans have a regular high rise that came right to my waist. They come in regular and tall, 0-20 XXL. I’m wearing a 0R and find they run TTS.

The sweater is a paisley print with shades of olive, pumpkin, blue, red and looks perfect for the season. It’s sized from 0-22 and runs TTS. Paisley feels like a more sophisticated print than many so if you shy away from florals but like combining colors, you might enjoy this type.

WEARING – FAUX SUEDE RUFFLED MULES

The sales ladies were oohing and aahing over my little ruffled mules so I thought I should share them with you. They pick up some of the embroidery colors in the cuffs of these jeans. I love how a nude shoe helps elongate the look of your legs, which is even more important when your pants have cuffs.

These pull-on bootcut jeans also come right to my waist and have a terrific fit. The flare is small so they cover your shoe or booties without being loose enough to flap around your ankle. Since they have no zipper or snap, they’ll look great under sweaters and closer-fitting tops.

This moto jacket is just gorgeous!! It’s buttery soft and the softest shade of navy. It doesn’t have tons of extraneous zippers so looks more streamlined than many moto jackets. It’s also available in pale Eucalyptus green in sizes 00-22. Under the jacket, I’m wearing their Microfiber tank in classic navy.

This tank is navy, but I would switch to black to match these pull-on bootcut pants or to this olive layering top to coordinate with the cardigan. The cardigan is a great weight and color for a warmer fall day. It’s sized from 00-22 and runs TTS. I think this would also be cute over dark denim or over everyone’s favorite, flattering  Brigette pants in olive, for a column of color.

I love, love, love this Hidden Treasure convertible necklace. It’s handmade, nickel-free, 35% brass, 30% steel, 30% zinc, 4% plastic, 1% cubic zirconia. It’s not overly shiny so dresses up or down and has a slightly rustic feel to it. You can adjust the layering and length for fit into or over necklines.

I’m a big fan of no-iron shirts and Chico’s makes a great one. This one is spiced red so it verges on tomato color rather than fire engine red. It’s a great length to wear out over pants and also proportioned to tuck in. The shirttails hemline keeps this shirt from looking blocky or square when you wear it untucked. I also like to wear these shirts open, as a third layer over a sleeveless tank or top.

These pants have classic 5 pocket styling like jeans but are in a heavyweight knit, similar to a ponte. They come in 3 classic colors sizes 000-20, including the ever-flattering navy. They’re slim fitting through hips and thighs but not tight on the calves.

These girlfriend jeans do not have as high a rise as the paisley cuffed ones and they were out of my size so these are a bit large on me. They’re available in 2 medium blue washes sizes 0-20.

This satin blouse has an asymmetrical tie opening that looks pretty open or tied closed. It comes in this rich mahogany, stone, or black in sizes 00-22. It does not appear to come in petite, even though the website has a length listed for it. This would be beautiful dressed up or worn with jeans and a fuzzy cardigan. I am wearing a 1 so it runs TTS.

Things are trickling into Chico’s fairly consistently, but I think like most retailers, they’re carrying less inventory in their brick and mortar stores so the best selections are had online.

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Love that polka dot sweater (anything polka dot actually) on you and I would love it too! Love you in the leather jacket and the brown silk blouse. I like the interesting detail at the neckline and it looks great on you!!

  2. The right proportions can make a big difference, I love and own several shirts by Chico’s, always have their jackets because they run shorter in length than most brands and I need regular for my long arms so I don’t buy petite. Sometimes the shoulders are a bit wide for me though. I have a lime corduroy shirt I’ve had for years. It still looks good. The mules, the red silk blouse, the cute paisley cuff jeans. Just love them,❤️

  3. Love love love those ruffle mules!! The price is terrific! I already ordered two pair! I also love the embellished cuff on the jeans. I have an embroidery sewing machine and will try this myself on a couple pair of jeans that have gotten kind of boring!

    1. Jeans shrunk in wash. I’m going to give it a try too. So cute. The cut turned fringy look after washing I love.

  4. Much better proportions! My body height and type are similar to yours, so I always pay attention to your posts. I also primarily shop at Chicos, Talbots and JJill That moto jacket looked terrific on you. Loved the No Iron shirt and several of the jeans as well.

  5. Really like these outfits. I’ve never been able to wear Chico’s clothes but I’m going to make a point of trying again. I do love their jewelry though.

  6. Do like the outfits today.
    Especially the paisley top
    and sage polka dot sweater.
I would also wear black pants and change out the navy t- shirt, but I would need to find some color to make the outfit pop. I guess black would work,
    maybe a textured black??

  7. These outfits look much better than the long tunic on you. I do wear long tunics but with leggings from Jill.
