Updating Our Look- My Goals

Fashion isn’t static, so each year, season, month, and day we get a chance to update our style to be in line with how we want to look. This includes shape, colors, and the message our clothes send. I’m a big fan of a classic but I do love to dabble in dramatic, boho, creative or artistic depending on my mood. The same holds true with color. I wear what strikes me as right for the time, and there are very few colors I won’t wear.

Inspiration is everywhere, so if you’re not happy with your present style, there’s no end to the things you can change. Start with the message your clothes send now. Do you want to send the same message this fall? Few of us remain unchanged after last year and many are craving not only more color but pattern. Fun, ease, and vitality feel right for more of us than ever.

Today I’m sharing how I want to look this fall and my wish list from the Nsale. I will continue to style all colors and styles for you on the blog but this is what’s on my personal radar.

JEANS

To start, I feel “done” with skinny jeans. This season, I want more room in the legs of my jeans. I no longer want to look like they’re spray-painted onto my calves. I want them to straighten out when I stand up without me needing to adjust them. I want a high waist because I feel more “contained” in them with less chance of rolling over the waistband when I sit down.

The theme I’m going for is “easy and comfortable” with the least amount of adjusting or fussing. These are all discounted in the Nsale, but the sale prices aren’t all showing in the widget. They are either straight-legged or have a slight flare and they’re high rise.

HIGH-RISE STRAIGHT OR BOOTCUT JEANS

COLOR

I’m not feeling motivated to buy anything in black this year. I have enough, and I want to explore more colors. They have energy and vitality that feels right this year. Brands are pumping out more color than ever this year, so if not now, when?

Colors go in cycles so if your favorites are popular this year, and mine seems to be, invest in the basics to tide you over when they are not plentiful.

COLORFUL SWEATERS

FOOTWEAR

I’d be surprised if women were clamoring to get back into high heels. They may make you look taller but the cost is too high for my feet. In my quest to not buy more black, I’ve been hunting for shoes and boots, that are more colorful. They must be comfy and stylish so the selection was narrower than I’d like. We still have many more weeks (I have months) of warm weather so I included sandals to wear now.

NON-BLACK FOOTWEAR

I’m also looking into some Rose Gold earrings and of course scarves. I never tire of the beauty of scarves. Here are some accessories on my radar.

Do you have the desire to update your look for fall? What’s changed from last year?

I love the variety in denim. I love slim cut jeans, but do have a couple of high rise that I love. What I am rather done with are leggings and tunics. I prefer a nice sweater with denim or slim cut pants.

Leggings aren’t on my radar this fall either.

I like a slim leg (not skin tight) jean. I feel like it makes my petite legs look longer. Unfortunately a high waisted pair hits right at my trouble spot. Got to try on a lot of jeans to find your true love.

I like a variety of cut jeans . I do like high rise for sure. I like them all. I have them in denim and black for winter . I also wear black leggings with ankle boots and flats. I wear tunic tops , sweaters with the slim jeans and leggings. The tops are in a variety of colors and so are cardigans and jackets. As a petite of 5’2 “ I look best in slim pants or leggings. I seem to look shorter and overweight with wider leg pants. Yes they are very comfortable the wide leg pants. Around the house I wear comfy yoga pants and knit tops .
I think I try to wear what makes me look tall , young , and slim. I like color , but I feel best in neutrals with scarves , jewelry, interesting jackets , cardigans added . I have not had my colors done , but I look good in fall colors , but can wear other season colors depending on the shade. I just have to try them on to see. I find it harder as I age to find clothes that I like . I guess I am not alone in this .

Thanks for the ideas — some work for me, some don’t (wedge sandals or clogs), but I think that assessing now for fall is spot on! My style is a little bifurcated. Most days, I’m in the country – walking, hiking, working in the yard – so pretty utilitarian. Jeans are always a good option, and I love high-rise crops. Once a week or so, my husband and I go to different towns for long walks, so I need good shoes and nice-looking walking pants, tees, sweatshirts, etc. We also spend time away in New England cities, where I need the type of put-together looks that you espouse and where I can where skirts and dresses. Love your advice!

I love the idea of straight leg high waist jeans as long as they look attractive with my low heeled boots. I have sone good looking nenstyje loafers but need to change up once in awhile.
Once summer passes I have no clue as to footwear with wide leg crops or even full length wide leg pants. Sandals look good!

I would enjoy more color this fall. ( can’t believe we are taking about fall already).
I love my skinny jeans but bought them in a comfortable style (not skin tight). Like my regular jeans, also.
Do need more color and to step out of my comfort zone. Although comfort does seem to be the style. Okay by me.
Thanks for your great input. 🙂

I have a pair of sandals almost exactly like the Mephisto sandals in that image. They’re perfect for narrow feet, or narrow heels, or for people whose feet swell during the day, because of the adjustable buckles. I’m always on the lookout for sandals with adjustment points. They’re also stable for walking, and look good with dresses or pants. I get compliments on them.

I also like sandals in darker colors for fall, because some of our fall days are hotter than our summer days.

Like you, I shop my colors when the getting is good, because sure enough there will be years when my complexion is not in favor with the fickle whims of fashion. This year has been productive.

I cannot image not wearing prints, especially in the summer.

I was keeping skinny jeans to wear with my tall knee boots? Are tall boots going away with the skinny jeans?

I’m keeping them for the same reason. Boots in Canada are a must Sept to April at least.

Terrific formula, Jennifer! As for myself; due to shopping restrictions I will be namely shopping my closet for my Autumn wardrobe however will be adding a few things vie on line purchases to refresh what I have provided ‘sizing’ isn’t a big issue. That said; my ‘skinny’ jeans therefore I do plan to wear until I can try on ‘slim cut’ (not to be confused with the former or straight cut ) as feel one has more options in footwear in both flats and heels as well as your choice of style regardless what climate you might live in. Also since their fit is a little more refined (tapered) coming somewhere in between design/cut, IMHO they work for just about any fashion style. i.e.: Classic, Bohemian, Street, Sporty etc. -Brenda-

I too like pops of color with all my black and white, especially aqua shades, I am limited in sweaters because I cannot wear wool or cashmere so I use different weights of cotton all year.

I feel the same way about different style options. Black looks good in the summer when I’m tan but color is much more flattering in the winter. Looking forward to different jean styles. I really like bootcut the best.

You have read my mind. I haven’t even really bought anything for 2 years. And even if some of those pounds I put on start to come off I’m tired of wishing I was in someone else’s body. I’m hoping this fall season will be the last one that I have to spend either WFH or being in the office and then I want to be done after the first of the year. So I’m dreaming of transitioning what clothes I have into casual but okay for what informal socializing I do. The biggest dilemma for me is that I really don’t like to go out shopping. It’s exhausting and frustrating.

I’m feeling the same need to add straight leg jeans to my fall wardrobe. Just don’t feel like having calves squished into my pants this year. I’ve also cut back on black tops. Not sure it’s best for my coloring anymore. As far as Nsale wishlist sweaters ( I’m addicted to sweaters), if it’s got wool; I’m a hard No. I found a few without wool, but, I’ve had lots of success (sadly for my wallet) with Talbots for colorful cotton sweaters.
I’m not sure what to do about shoes this fall. I had reconstructive foot surgery this past fall, and don’t ever see myself in heels again. Square toe shoes and comfort are my new mantra. But, wondering if flat booties will look ok with straight leg jeans? Skinny jeans has made boots so easy. Any advice?

Amen to adding comfort in jeans and shoes and color in everything! Not giving up on my existing black but additions will be in color.

Wow! Your style goals and mine are quite aligned! I’m a classic, which can be a challenge sometimes to avoid looking frumpy. It’s all about the styling and accessories. I don’t ever carry a black handbag (I have one, just for somber occasions). I rarely wear black shoes. It’s amazing how a pop of colour in your shoes can change the whole look of an outfit! And, I’m with you on the skinny jeans. It would be nice to stand up and not have to pull the legs of your jeans down. I bought a couple of chinos that you recommended a while back, and they’re so comfy and stylish. Thanks so much for sharing today.

I am totally in agreement about the positives from changes in style and color. I don’t wear platform shoes at all however — I stepped in a pothole and rolled an ankle in a pair, and it was a long way down for that poor foot. I hope to see new styles soon.

Hope you are happy with your fall style
purchases. I was able to shop yesterday, and picked up the same Eileen Fisher tunic sweater you featured. I took my usual size and did not feel overwhelmed by fabric. It’s cut straight and flows nicely. As a bonus, the color is gorgeous. Interestingly, I purchased the same Marilyn jeans last spring and decided to save them for fall. I am 5’6 and needed about an inch off the hem, but otherwise they fit well. For ladies reluctant to try wide leg or straight jeans, give these a try. You may be pleasantly surprised. On my quest to replace a pair of boots, I took a spin through the shoe department. Did not notice a single spike heel. Now, I wasn’t looking, so perhaps I just missed them. This was different from prior years when I had to sort through the spike heels. It seems that lug soles and flats are the boot game.

One more observation about the sale. It is my impression that much of the merchandise is featured only online. Several things I ordered for pickup were later switched to shipping (no problem) and store displays had a few examples with signs that read “More Online.” So don’t feel cheated if you can’t get to a retail store.

    Happy shopping!

More than ever, I rely on online shopping and I think that will be what we all need to do going forward. It’s more affordable for the brands and they need to adjust to survive.

I agree, Jennifer. The benefit of the sale remains quality merchandise at good prices, regardless of how it gets to us. It will just be a different experience for many shoppers this year.

As I read the title of your post today, about setting goals, I was a little nervous. Gee. That sounds big and complicated. But no. I should never have doubted. You made it clear and reasonable. Doable actually. I never liked the painted on jeans look. And I can’t abide having to fiddle with my clothes. And I look grey and washed out in black. So I’m going to just steal your goals for straight jeans and no muffin tops, for colour, and for comfortable stylish shoes. (I’ll stick with gold gold). That was easy!

I’m so happy to see high rise jeans come back. And I’m with you completely re: buying my favorite colors when they cycle past. My closet has so much turquoise/aqua/seaglass in it, I have to force myself to branch out. I love that linen EF sweater. 🙂

Yes to the wider leg jeans and pants, and yes to colour in the closet. I agree with you on stocking up on the basics when the colours are the ones you wear and love. Next season may not work, and maybe not even next year, so get them while they are available. I found a few styles of periwinkle blue T shirts with various sleeve lengths, so I have them in rotation and maybe no one notices the subltle differences, but I do. I think I will look for rose gold summer shoes before the fall looks show up.

I was such a fan of skinny jeans but now I would really like some nice straight leg jeans with just a regular rise. Might be hard to find, we’ll see. I love all the colors for fall and I think I have too much black also. Looking forward to the Nordstrom sale!

I love the theme of this post as I struggle with my current look-hoodies and and leggings and I am 62!!!! But it is what I am comfortable with and what I prefer. I see other ladies my age in capris, pants and tops that look put together. But I don’t feel that way when I dress. I can’t break out of my comfort zone. Which, as we all know, is harder to do as we get older. Help!!!!!

I am with you on the skinny jeans! I barely bought into them because I hated the adjusting every time you stand up. I have a high rise so for me the mid rise use to look like low on other women, I am thrilled with the highrise! I am interested that you are finding lots of colour, I love being colourful and seem to find a ton of neutrals. Thanks again for a great post!
