What’s New for Spring 2019

What’s New for Spring 2019

Happy Thursday ladies. I hope you’re having nicer weather than we are. It’s stormy and windy with torrential downpours here which have kept us inside and is getting old fast. We’re planning an escape to Palm Springs next month which has me thinking of spring clothes.

Adding a touch of new trends helps modernize our wardrobe and keeps us looking current. This spring ushers in many new looks we should pick and choose from to fit our personal style. Some of the trends that are coming in are surprising and some that are going out are a relief.

Top Handle Bags

I’ve always been a fan of structured bags so I’m happy to see the return of top-handled bags. These are typically smaller than other bags which helps you to appear taller.

Earth Tones

All tones of beige, tan and sand are back in a big way this spring. These are great colors to wear as a column of color so I may dip my toe into this trend. These are available in warm or cool tones to flatter your coloring.earth tone trend for spring 2019

Tie Dye

This hippie-inspired pattern is making a comeback from the ’60s. I’m not sure how many of us will be revisiting this trend and will be curious to see.

Pastels and Neon

Remember neon colors from the 1980s? They’re back and will soon be hitting the stores. Luckily, pastels are also on trend because neon is tough for many of us to wear. I will do some pastels because they’re already in my wardrobe, but nothing too washed out.

Utility Dressing

Things that resemble a uniform and jumpsuits in particular. In fact, jumpsuits are mentioned in many places as coming on strong. This is a very distinctive look which you either love or hate. It’s heavily sporty and looks very casual.Spring 2019 jumpsuit trend shown on A Well Styled Life

Puff Sleeves

Subtle and full-on puffy sleeves showed up on the runways so will be showing up soon at all price points. Be aware this look broadens your shoulders so inverted triangle shapes might not find it their best look.

Bike Shorts

You read that right. They’re predicting bike shorts to be popular this spring. They’re showing them with suit jackets and heels. Beware of this combo over 40 which may look like you’re trying too hard. Sensible shorts are also on trend so this may be no different than what many women have worn for years.bike short outfit for spring 2019

Statement Jewelry

Big earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are a huge trend for Spring 2019. If you wear dainty pieces, try layering them for a statement effect.yellow statement tassel earring for Spring 2019

Some of the trends going out are:

Off Shoulder Tops

I found this almost impossible to wear so I’m not sad to see it in the rearview mirror.

Ruffles

I’m surprised to see this go out and women who love a feminine look will continue to enjoy them.

Thigh High Boots and Stilettos

My legs are too short for thigh high boots so I’m happy to see knee-high boots replacing them. Stilettos haven’t been on my feet in years so I won’t miss this trend and hope it means more comfy shoes will be available.

What do you think you’ll be trying and what will you pass on?

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

Statement jewelry is a must for me and if I can find cool taupe in the earth tones, I may try that.

I love the jumpsuit look, but this 63 year old grandmother can’t get them off quickly enough to go to the bathroom. I’ll have to pass.

Lol, Sandy. They’re not easy for me either so I’ve always passed on them.

I don’t think I will ever wear tie dye again! I love primary colors so that is a good trend for me! Not sad to see the off the shoulder looks go away. I have never bought one, first they are uncomfortable to wear, and secondly, they make my broad shoulders look even broader. I don’t particularly like ruffles either. I never wear earth tones, since I am a “winter” and look better in primary colors. I wear a lot of navy blue, pink, fushia, purple, and black and white. Clean bright colors are better on me. Thanks for the update!

Off shoulder looks are not great for my shoulders either. Plus the whole strapless bra thing..????

Love the color of sand/taupe! Always so beautiful! And I adore the top handle bags.

Glad to see those off the shoulder tops go. I hope distressed jeans are going with them … or are they already out. Hope so!

I second your vote for the demise of distressed jeans. They’re just not an esthetic I can appreciate.

happy to see statement jewelry coming back because I still have some of it from when it was popular a few years ago. Like the sand/taupe but not sure I could wear a whole outfit in this color, afraid it would wash me out. I would not be caught dead in the bike shorts, that look is hideous! like the jumpsuit but at this age when I have to pee I really have to pee so afraid I would not get it down in time. also doubt it would hide the muffin top very well. Thank you for this article…always enjoy seeing what to expect in the stores

Lol, Mary Jo. I think a lot of us agree about the jumpsuit.

And here I am shopping for a warm scarf with brighter colors than what I wear in the mtns! ha! We are at the beach on southern SC coast, but sure warmer than the N.C. mtns! Love your tips to look taller. Like another devoted follower, I am a summer and need bright colors all year. Scarves are about the only fashion I think I would use tie dye for the colors.

SC would be much nicer this time of year! Smart choice Bonnie. Using tie dye in a scarf is a clever idea. But it would need to be subtle for me.

If you want to try the tie dye trend, try wearing it as a workout tank top or shirt. Soul Cycle is selling a blue tie dyed sleeveless workout shirt that I thought actually looked nice, although it was a bit pricey for me. I am going to keep my eye out for something similar in a lower price range. That is probably the only way I would be able to incorporate the trend.

I am a 60s ish cyclist and while there is. I thing more comfortable than biking shorts and jersey I would say a pox on anyone who wants to take this style off the road!

      January 17, 2019 / 8:15 am

I agree with Susan! Leave the bike shorts for serious cyclist.
Bonnie had a good idea in incorporeal tie dye trend in a scarf. That would be a fun one.
Beige washes me out but I do like the monochrome look on the model. I think I would approach that trend with a column of colour and top it with a more flattering colour in a jacket. I have a red jean jacket that I think would be just the thing.
I’m tall so small handbags would look silly on me plus they eon’t Hold all the necessities. I’ll keep small purses to clutches for an evening out.
Utility sounds interesting but not in the form of a jumpsuit. I’ll leave that one to my daughters. But, in the form of a jacket or shirt – yes.
Neon – No! Pastels – No!
Big statement jewellery – while I like it on other women not on myself. They overwhelm my small chest and skinny neck.
As for the outgoing, I didn’t wear them anyway.
I do have a question though. Are bell sleeves out, too? I liked that trend as long as they weren’t exaggerated. They have a feminine appeal.

Exaggerated sleeves are going out too.

Have seen that bike shorts trend called out somewhere else, too. Wow…kinda crazy. I’m not even all that fond of them when I’m on my bike. lol

I do love beige and khaki, but have decided they really wash me out and don’t buy them anymore except to wear away from my face once in a while. And I also love statement jewelry. Not sure about puff sleeves. A lot of this has that “been there, done that” feel for me. Thanks for the trend report.

Though I’m either for a hippie nor neon or bike short what means all the new fashion style is not on my agenda.
Some dresses looks quite nice but only in your youngest age.

I’m apparently going to be the lone voice in support of tie dye. I’ve found that a very subtle, single-color tie-dye piece like a tee is a fun way to have a pattern that’s not a cutesy floral or my usual stripe. It’s breezy, casual, and makes me laugh that I’m connecting to my 60s self! I feel happy in it all day. Thanks for the great info, Jennifer!

A very interesting post! Of the trends coming in, there are very few I am happy to see. One being small top handle bags. This is great for me since I am one of those petite people. I like statement jewelry on others, but rarely purchase any for myself except for chunky bracelets and occasionally longer necklaces that keep the vertical line going down the front of my outfit. I will take a pass on all the other trends coming in this Spring except for a few pastels and maybe a neutral outfit. I feel the other looks are not for this 69 year old grandma. As far as what is going out, I never dabbled in any of those looks anyway. So off the shoulder tops, ruffles, and thigh-high boots were never on my radar. Again, either because of my petite frame or because of my age.

If these are the trends, I’ll be saving money this year. I don’t like any of the looks pictured. The only one I could possibly go with is the earth tone/beige look, but I know it would wash me out. I could picture my teen-age granddaughter wearing some of these things, but not me.

  16. January 17, 2019 / 9:00 am

Love the jumpsuit and have several knit ones; do you happen to have the link to the piece you showed here?

    Thanks!

So this spring I will wear “neon tie dye utility jumpsuit with puff sleeves”. Ok maybe not but I am up for trying some neon and brighter pastels, tie dye in limited amounts and fairly monochrome works for me. Bike shorts I think translates to burmuda shorts for me. Structured bags and statement jewellery bring it on! It will be interesting to see what these trends look like when they hit the stores.

Interesting but mostly not for me. What are the trends for pants and jeans? I never did like the torn up jeans look but the slimmer ones yes.

Low rise, bootcut, straight and baggy wide legs.

How about “cold shoulder” tops? Are they on the way out? I’ve been wondering. Thanks Jennifer!

I am sooo glad cold shoulder is out- I never liked it. OTS can be cute and I live in Florida so I think some will still be appropriate

So Spring 2019 is a replay of the 1990’s? LOL! I’m old enough to say, been there, done that. Except for neutral toned clothing, I will probably not participate in any of these redo’s, unless I find something done differently that happens to look good on me. (Never say “never”!) As for the trends going out, that’s all good with me, however, I do have OTK boots, (not thigh highs), that I will continue to wear. I tend to buy my boots and booties with out any trendy details, so they last longer, they’re not dated. It will be interesting to see how these ‘new’ trends make their reappearance.

    January 22, 2019 / 12:17 pm

I love a OTS for some events. But I will keep my non-platform heels, I just love them too much. I also think ruffles that are subtle will always be in style, they have been appearing since the 90’s, but exaggerated sleeves- gone!
