Would You Wear It?

Would You Wear It?

Happy Saturday and welcome to would you wear it. Each week Pam Lutrell from Over 50 Feeling 40 share a mannequin we’ve come across and ask our readers opinions. We want to know if you would wear this look and why or why not.

We do this to better understand your fashion and style desires based on your lifestyle, body shape, and taste. I saw this outfit when I was doing dressing room diaries and thought I’d love to get your opinion on this one since we were talking about color.

This outfit isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t wear it. The bright red is pretty, but not the best color for me, so that’s 1 thing I’d change. The coat looks so large & a bit sloppy. I prefer something a little more fitted & not quite so overwhelming.

I wasn’t sure at first glance, if that was a sweater or a coat. After further inspection, I decided it IS a coat. I would not wear it for that reason. When I wear a coat I wear it to keep warm and prefer a much more structured coat. The color is another problem for me. I have a sweater that is that exact style but I wear it only around the house and it is gray.

  3. January 26, 2019 / 4:23 am

I would not wear this…the tee shirt seems sloppy and the coat seems like it needs to be with a more polished top underneath. I also agree that the coat is very loose and would not be a figure flattering choice. It just seems like none of the pieces should be together. Happy Saturday…thanks for doing this with me.

      Happy Saturday Pam

  4. January 26, 2019 / 4:26 am

Love this three piece ensemble, tho this red is not my best red either (someone mentioned this earlier). Overall, tho, I like the outfit. The stripes in the tee add freshness, the dark slim pant is becoming to my shape, and the open coat is interesting, in shape particularly. I really like it.

I love the colour … if it is a cool red I can wear it … actually my now grey hair handles brighter cool colours more than my cool brown dyed hair did. My pear shape would like a slightly less sloppy coat shape though.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 7:20 pm

It is more of a warm red

  6. Linda
    January 26, 2019 / 4:46 am

I like the idea, but I agree with the others that the coat is just too big and sloppy looking. It the topper were in a sweater fabric with a better drape, it might work. Also, the t-shirt is too loose. I’m good with the red.

    January 26, 2019 / 4:46 am

I would wear this outfit except for the tee, as a crew neck is not my best neckline. The jacket caught my eye first as I love the draped front and the colour is fabulous! And I love a black ankle length pant.
    I’m 5’7″ and a rectangle shape.

  8. BethW
    January 26, 2019 / 4:51 am

I like the colors of the outfit. The tee and pants are fine but the topper is just too big and sloppy for me. I am petite and the topper would overwhelm me.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 7:21 pm

      Great observation Beth

  9. January 26, 2019 / 4:53 am

I like red, black and white together on people who aren’t cool like me (wait… I am SO not cool, lol) Complexion-wise, I meant. Stripes, jacket cuffs, pants, all good, but I would feel cluttered in the drape-y jacket and whatever white layer that is hanging down underneath.

  10. Linda
    January 26, 2019 / 5:06 am

I wouldn’t wear this. I like red but this one is too bright for me . It also looks sloppy on this mannequin but I’m guessing they just put too large a size on it. The coat looks like it’s buttonless and I’d want one that I could keep closed on a chilly day.

  11. Roxanne
    January 26, 2019 / 5:15 am

Maybe I’m color blind because I thought it was orange! If it was orange it would get a lot of wear since I live in Clemson, home of …ahem … the National Football Champions! I like the cut and style of the coat and tee, but they both look huge and I would size down about 3 sizes. Love the black ankle pants!

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 7:22 pm

It is a very warm red so you’re correct, it looks almost orange.

  12. Lynn
    January 26, 2019 / 5:35 am

I think it’s a beautiful outfit. I wouldn’t wear it because I feel I would get lost in the size of the coat. But for a taller person—striking!!!

  13. January 26, 2019 / 5:40 am

well, I would not wear the coat. I cannot wear that color red. Also it does not have buttons. the whole idea of a coat is to stay warm. Not practical at all. Also, I hate stripes. I would never wear this top.

  14. Susan
    January 26, 2019 / 5:44 am

The whole outfit doesn’t fit the mannequin! But I love the bright color (to me it’s orange) and would wear it all in a proper size. The topper coat could be used with a lot of other things-dresses, jeans, etc. And I can’t resist stripes. I’m tall so I think I could pull that off.

  15. Adrienne C Kushner
    January 26, 2019 / 5:47 am

I love the red coat. I like something unusual. I like to pair red with black and white. I never wear horizontal stripes. I would wear a red and white top in an abstract print or vertical stripes.

  16. Ellen
    January 26, 2019 / 5:54 am

I really love the sweater/coat and would definitely wear it over pants like these, or skinny jeans. I don’t think it’s sloppy at all. This warm red is a good color for me, although it took me many years to work up the courage to wear a color that stands out like this. I think it is too sophisticated for the striped tee. I would wear it with a funky black-and-white graphic tee.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 7:24 pm

It’s a very bold color. Bravo for having the courage to wear colors you like Ellen.

      You’re right! Thanks Ellen

  17. Renae
    January 26, 2019 / 6:17 am

No, it is cute but the top and the coat would look sloppy on me. I also do not wear cropped pants, not a good look with my wide hips and short body. Like most thing on the right figure it would be cute. Aside from my figure it just isn’t my style, I prefer a more classic look.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 7:25 pm

      Thanks for explaining Renae

  18. Linde
    January 26, 2019 / 6:30 am

I like the striped top and slim pants, but the coat would be overwhelming on me.

  19. Donna Lukens
    January 26, 2019 / 6:32 am

I love the color, the stripes, the shapes! I live in the mountains of Wyoming and these pieces would work well for my active lifestyle. The open coat would allow layering, but be perfect for driving. The slim pants and oversize t-shirt would also work so well for my life. Thank you!

  20. Marilyn McDonald
    January 26, 2019 / 6:41 am

The moment I saw this outfit, I said, “Oh, yeah!” I love the bright red and the stripes–I am 5’7″ and the color red is one of my best. I also really like crew neck shirts. The pants would de-emphasize my pear shape, as would the sweater/coat’s long coverage. I even have a pair of shoes that would be perfect with this outfit–black Dr. Scholl’s step-ins with a white thick sole, similar to the Steve Madden style so prevalent in casual shoes.

By the way, I just have to add how thankful I am to have found this blog. Over the last year, I’ve lost 75 pounds, with another 10 to go, and I had been at my former weight for decades. I only bought clothes for comfort and coverage, but now a whole new world of fashion has opened up to me, and I need guidance. Jennifer’s writing and your comments are teaching me what to be particular about when I shop now, because THESE clothes will be the keepers! Thank you!

As a pear, the shape is too big and non fitted for me. I have tried on that type of neckline/ collar, the wide collar doesn’t lay flat it folds in and out, just like on the mannequin, bad design. Color no. Pants no, I prefer bootcut/ longer, to lengthen my legs, I’m 5’5”, but shorter legs.

    January 26, 2019 / 7:00 am

First off the sweater should be a size or two smaller and more fitted. Second all one color (navy, black, white) would be more elongating and attractive. Adding a long necklace and a heel would increase the effect if you were petite. The stripes & oversize sweater make the mannequin look heavier than she is

    January 26, 2019 / 7:10 am

I like the outfit as a whole. I like red and this would be a fun Spring or Fall outfit for those cool, but not cold days. I tend to wear my jackets open, so this would work. It also would work for days when I am getting in and out of the car a lot and don’t want to deal with a structured coat. I would wear it or something similar. It’s actually gotten me thinking about some things I can come up with out of my own wardrobe.

  24. Conda Bell
    January 26, 2019 / 7:13 am

I would have to try it on. With my height it might make me look dumpy. I do like it though.

  25. Janet
    January 26, 2019 / 7:16 am

Too loose and sloppy. Vertical stripes and crew neckline not flattering nor is that shade of red on me.

  26. January 26, 2019 / 7:20 am

I love it for days when I don’t want a close fitting structured coat/jacket. The red is spot on….I love red with my silver hair. Add a pair of black flats and I’m good to go. The coat looks sloppy on the mannequin, but I don’t think it would if worn correctly. Just perfect for a casual, errand-running day!!

  27. January 26, 2019 / 7:35 am

The first WWWI I’ve seen that prompts a whole-hearted YES! This would look great on my 6 ft slim frame and the colors are ones I wear – I’ll buy it now 😉

    January 26, 2019 / 7:48 am

Yes, I’d wear it i navy blue. There is zero red in my closet. It is not a color I like.

  29. January 26, 2019 / 8:33 am

Yes! It’s great! I don’t wear much red, but this is fun. I love the oversized jacket with a striped tee!

  30. Kay
    January 26, 2019 / 8:45 am

I love it. Red id one of my favorite colors, and I like the long over lean with the slim pants.

  31. January 26, 2019 / 8:45 am

Yes – I would wear this outfit. I love the bold red coat and the Bretagne style top. The coat smartens up a casual outfit. I love a bold colour and it is difficult to find bright colours at present.

  32. Joanna
    January 26, 2019 / 8:58 am

It would be a No! I don’t like the high crew neck on the tee. It would just emphasize my long neck. The outer layer (sweater or coat) looks sloppy. I don’t like how the collar lays, nor the oversized look. Plus the red is the wrong shade for my colouring. I prefer a more tailored look.
What is the white piece I’m seeing peeking out from under the coat? Pocket lining? A big NO!
This mannequin would not entice me to explore the store.

      January 26, 2019 / 4:40 pm

I was just reading the reviews. I guess I’m in the minority. I still stand by my opinion though. It all depends on height, weight, colouring and style. I’m tall and slender so this look only makes me look taller & skinnier. Crew necks are not my friend. I love red but need a blue/red to complement my complexion. Interesting though, what one sees in an outfit.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 9:22 pm

Not sure what the white piece is. Thanks Joanna

I love the red , but I’d say the stripes don’t match. A sleeveless black turtleneck and absolutely. I love the red!

  34. Cyndi
    January 26, 2019 / 10:13 am

I like 3 piece outfits and all 3 of these could mix and match with other pieces in my closet so I would give this a try; has the potential to be a great weekend casual outfit (Although it does look just a little like “where’s Waldo?” – LOL)

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 9:24 pm

Lol! I like 3 piece outfits too. Thanks Cyndi

  35. Donna
    January 26, 2019 / 10:16 am

Love Red, my favorite color. This is a nice outfit and I would definitely where it except for the top. I am to big busted to where any stripes that are horizonal.

  36. Becky
    January 26, 2019 / 10:50 am

I would wear the top & pants, as red & black are a favorite combination of mine. I do think the top is a bit large for the mannequin, thus making it look sloppy. The coat/jacket gets a no from me. I love the color, but it seems a bit overwhelming. I prefer something with more structure.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 9:25 pm

That’s a great observation Becky, thanks.

  37. L H Carter
    January 26, 2019 / 11:12 am

I like it. It looks comfortable and see myself feeling relaxed while wearing it. I like the stripes and the combo of red and black.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 9:26 pm

How we feel in our clothes is so important. Thanks for bringing that up.

  38. Karen
    January 26, 2019 / 11:16 am

Yes and no. I definitely need color in my outfits, but that red is too intense and the black seems harsh. So if this was modified to a medium blue paired with soft gray it would be up my alley. I would probably get the jacket in a smaller size as well. I like long and lean on top and lean on bottom to fit my proportions.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 9:27 pm

You also prefer lower contrast colors. Thanks Karen.

  39. Pamela Mason
    January 26, 2019 / 1:46 pm

I love this and yes I would wear it. Love the red, love the stripes, live the leggings. I already wear a version, but it’s a long sweater coat with … anything. Very comfy, polished, and goid proportions for me.

  40. Anne
    January 26, 2019 / 1:46 pm

I love the coat / jacket and the colour however it needs to be teamed with something more fitted underneath. Where I live, we often need a warm topper, but not necessarily a formal coat that buttons up, in Autumn and Spring. I also think that the coat is too big for the mannequin, hence the comments about it being too big and overwhelming. I would wear it like a coatigan rather than a formal coat.

  41. Diana
    January 26, 2019 / 2:44 pm

I need structure in my jackets/coats, to give my body some definition, …the coat is a no for me. The striped top I would try on and would have to pass on the cropped pants as cropped styles don’t look good on me unless they’re form fitting.

    • Jennifer
      January 26, 2019 / 9:29 pm

Thanks for sharing your “why” Diana. It sounds like you understand the proportions that flatter you best!!

  42. Robin
    January 28, 2019 / 4:53 am

I like this outfit. It’s something that I would wear often. I would only consider it if it was offered in a petite size and I would most likely size down in the red sweater. Otherwise, it would be overwhelming for me at 5’3”. Would also try belting the sweater.
