Would You Wear It – Blurred Plaid

Would You Wear It – Blurred Plaid

Happy Saturday ladies! I hope you’ve had a great week. Mine has been really busy and promises to get crazier as we get closer to Christmas. It’s time for would you wear it so grab another cup of your favorite coffee or tea and let’s have some fun.

Each week my friend Pam and I share a mannequin we’ve photographed and ask if you would wear what it’s modeling. I love to hear your styling ideas and it’s fun to inspire one another.

So tell me, would you wear this? How would you style these pieces to work for your shape and lifestyle? Please keep your comments personal to you.

Here’s me in the regular small on the left and petite medium on the right. Pay no attention to the lumpiness of the one on the right…I have no idea what was going on there.

The sales are pretty epic and continuous these days so here are a few that caught my eye-

TALBOTS – 40% off everything

SOMA – $25 bras, 30% off sleep separates, $49 pajama sets, and plush robes $49.

J. JILL – 30% off your entire purchase with the code WARMTH30

ANN TAYLOR – 50% off full-price sweaters, dress, pants and denim with the code HOLIDAY and free shipping over $75

J. CREW – up to 60% off great gifts plus an extra 20% off with the code FESTIVE

ANTHROPOLOGIE – 50% off your must-haves plus free shipping on all orders

BANANA REPUBLIC – up to

Now let’s go see what Pam’s mannequin is wearing at Over 50 Feeling 40

I love the outfit with the scarf, very classic and comfy for the holidays. The purse is cute, but I’m not one to buy “statement” bags, especially one like this that would get limited use. I’d rather tie the scarf on a black bag–same festive effect and bigger bang for your buck. I think the regular small looks great on you!

I would definitely wear this outfit! Leggings are great with boots! Or just relaxing at home, which many of us are doing this time of year. I think the regular looks best for length, the shoulder placement slouches a bit, but it does look more comfortable. The smaller one seems more tIght. I also agree with one of your viewers, Talbots sizing is often off and there should be an in between size. Being a little more endowed on the top…I’ll try regular smalls, maybe I’ll have more luck with tops, though I always worry about sleeve length. Shopping can be stressful! LOL

In my opinion leggings with a chunky long sweater with boots is a classic and practical style.

I do like this look. You look best in the small so hope you got that one. I am 5’4” and a size 2 so I have trouble with most tunic tops. I do like this one though would you share what the store was? I just bought a regular xs cable knit dress from Talbots and I love it though the sleeves are a bit long. I find that I am between sizes in Talbots a lot these days. The sleeves in the regular xs will be too long, but the xs petite is too tight through the armholes and shoulder area. If I size up to a petite small it is shorter than I like in the length as I have sort of a long torso.I like the length of the regular sizes but it lately Talbots sizing has made that more problematic. Does anybody else have this issue? I would wear the tunic if I could get the right size, I love the denim leggings and I like the scarf tough I would probably take it off after 15 minutes. The blurred plaid I don’t think is for me but that is an attractive purse. Enjoying your blog, you have the best ideas!

I love this look! I like the length of the regular, especially with leggings and I especially love the scarf and bag.

I am tiny but I do wear bulky sweaters but only with leggings. As long as the sweater is long enough like your regular small one, I quite like the look. I like plaid and I might wear the plaid shirt underneath the sweater with the collar and cuffs out for a pop of colour but only if the shirt wasn’t too thick. The scarf would overpower me and the purse isn’t my style. I wouldn’t get enough use out of it to make it worth spending money on. If I was wearing the plaid shirt under the sweater, I’d probably use my small red crossbody purse.

I am from a family of Irish knitters… and I mean knitters of everything– fair isle, cables, there wasn’t anything my Nana, mom and aunt wouldn’t/won’t tackle. Plaids and cables get double thumbs up from me and mine. I like the petite on you, as I do on myself at 5’2″. I only recently found your blog and really enjoy your posts. In the last 18 months I’ve lost over 60 pounds, which helped me accept this year’s big 60 birthday… something about that number in the tens place changing that brings life into new perspective. I have always been into style, but the weight loss makes it even more fun 😛

I actually like the regular sweater on you rather than the petite. To me bulky type sweaters look best if a bit oversized worn over leggings or skinny jeans. Love the scarf in the display.

I like all of the plaid pieces. Red is my color. I have never like cable sweaters, not even when I was a child, don’t really know why.

Have found out that Petite Sizes fits me better in arm & thigh [hip] lengths especially when it comes to jackets, sweaters and even some styled dresses. Regular sizes would bunch up at the wrist and toosch and would drive me bonkers. As for the plaid scarves — would Not wear together, (too many plaid combos gives me a headache) separately absolutely!

    December 5, 2020 / 9:55 am

Mmmm….I want to like it, like the idea of it but it loses something in the translation. The bulky cables add visual weight. Prefer the length of the petite sweater over the regular size. When comparing the two pictures, the sweater on the left is toooo long and makes the legs look stumpy and moves this into a frumpy, matronly look ( aka not flattering ). Like the scarf, a bit bulky but on the right body type it would be ok.

IMO this look is made for the slender/skinny, small busted woman. On a woman with hips, a full bust and curves, I think this look adds weight where it shouldn’t and DOES NOT highlight the curvy women’s assets. Just my thoughts.

Yes! I would definitely wear this. I love the simplicity of leggings with a great sweater tunic. I love the scarf – it is so classic. And the plaid handbag is so cute.

Love the plaid handbag – very festive! Doubt I’d use it much psst January though. Not a fan of polyester sweaters so take a pass on the tunic. Thanks for these “Would you wear it” posts.. Not in the malls much nowadays so feel like I’m shopping vicariously through you!😀

Perfect cold weather comfy outfit! I would have preferred a tunic sweater with a little less texture with the scarf; the large cable is a pattern and the plaid scarf is a pattern and mixing patterns is a bit out of my personal comfort zone. But around home, I would often just wear the 2 pieces – a scarf or necklace sometimes gets in my way if I’m cooking, doing light housework or crafts.

    December 5, 2020 / 8:24 am

I do not like the sweater — too many lumps and bumps and I have plenty of those already. Also, I’m hippy and most long sweaters tend to accentuate my not so positive. And I don’t wear leggings for the same reason. The scarf and bag would overwhelm my short frame but I like the colors.

    December 5, 2020 / 8:02 am

I literally tried that exact sweater on last night at JJill! I instantly fell in love with the buttery soft cabled chenille. Also, I have been on a quest for the perfect non-wool off white sweater. I’m a size petite 12 so I tried on the petite large. From the waist up, it was perfection. But, sadly, at 5’1, and a little too round :(, tunics just aren’t for me.
The sales lady was pushing leggings with it, but I’m more of a jeans girl. Even in skinny jeans, I still had to walk away from this beauty. Maybe if I was 20 lbs lighter.

The sweater and leggings are something I would admire on other women but I would look like a lollipop! My legs are too slim and my body is to fluffy to pull it off. I would look at the bag or scarf, maybe not to wear at the same time.

    December 5, 2020 / 7:48 am

Love the sweater and leggings. I love the look of scarfs but, not on me.
I always look like am trying to hang myself.
The bag is too big. Like wallet sizes with it without a strap in a Buffalo Plaid.
    Outfit look awesome on you
(the small reg sweater was best).

To me this says cold, snowy day, and that’s exactly when I’d wear this outfit. I love it. I would need to try on the sweater to see which size looked the best – regular or petite. If the sweater is a crew neck, I might want to wear the plaid shirt underneath (with the collar out) instead of the scarf. My red Reiker booties that would look perfect with this.

    • Jennifer

Red boots would be so perfect!!

    December 5, 2020 / 7:18 am

Normally like bulky knit sweaters however have a few issues with this one. Firstly its crew neck which I seldom wear. Secondly the pattern as do not care for the X ‘n O’s and lastly that it isn’t opaque as the pants underneath appear visible which doesn’t appeal to me. (Though, when needed I often interline such with a very light weight/spaghetti strap/cotton jersey knit/long length camisole that rectifies the problem.) Re the plaid scarf; do have similar in my winter wardrobe so would consider it as seldom ways to wear it. As to the large tote and though larger than what I’m using nowadays, might use it as a ‘shoe bag’ which BTW are surprisingly difficult to find regardless of the climate I live in. To conclude; a yes to the leggings as have several pair in different colors that I get a lot mileage out of.
Footnote: I live in Canada where outdoor winter footwear is a must so often have to transport our shoes from A to B.

As another Canadian, look at cloth wine bags to use as shoe bags. There are lots of options and I’ve found them to fit either slippers or loafers, perhaps not heals.

I love the look and would wear it exactly as shown as long as the sweater was long enough to cover my butt. I’m 5’8″. The sweater and leggings are basic pieces that could be worn with so many other things in my closet.

  24. Rose
    December 5, 2020 / 7:12 am

This is definitely for me if the sweater fits properly. Wouldn’t go for the plaid handbag though!

  25. Sue H
    December 5, 2020 / 7:04 am

I like the idea of it, but fit would be important. I clicked the link. I would not wear it in white, but the periwinkle and sugarplum colours are great. (What’s up with the neon lime green?? Yuck)

With a bulky sweater on top, I would pair this with skinny jeans. It’s not long enough IMHO to cover the butt in leggings. My rule is a tunic has to hit mid thigh in order to wear it with leggings.

I love all the red/black plaid accessories. Such a great combination for winter, especially just before Christmas. I would obviously not wear these with the periwinkle or sugarplum coloured sweaters, but with something else? Gorgeous.

Love this look, but as others have said the sweater is too much for a petite person. I would definitely recreate this look with a different sweater.

  28. Susan McClelland
    December 5, 2020 / 6:53 am

I like the sweater but I would have to try it on before committing. I’m 5’7″ and usually take an extra small so it might be considerably shorter on me. Plus, I have long arms. I like the scarf and would likely wear it. I would buy the purse if it was a cross-body style. Having left my purse behind on many occasions, I only use cross-body bags.

  29. Jackie

Just bought a cotton tunic with tiny cables, so not as bulky looking as this one. The scarf is also too big for me. I do have a red and black Buffalo check flannel tunic that I wear all winter, that’s a favorite for me.

  31. Mary
    December 5, 2020 / 6:03 am

LOVE this look, but as I am also 5′ I have to agree with Nyla, it might be just too much for my frame. If I traded the sweater for something less bulky (and I think I have the perfect thing in my closet already) I would certainly wear that version of this outfit.

  32. Nyla
    December 5, 2020 / 5:53 am

I would love it on someone else but would not wear the white; I would wear the sweater in black with the scarf and handbag.

  33. Nancy
    December 5, 2020 / 5:52 am

I like the look on the mannequin, but at 5’0”, the bulk of the cable knit might be too much. I love blanket scarves and have two in plaids, but end up using them to carry and use as a “blanket” when somewhere cold. Again, they’re just too much bulk on me. The purse is a definite NO — I’d spend all day trying to focus my eyes 🙂 !

    • Jennifer

Thanks for sharing Nancy. I have trouble with blanket scarves too

I have a sweater just like that from Jill and love it! I’m glad tunics are coming back. I really like the longer length even though I’m not tall. They are so comfortable. The leggings are cute, too and I’d definitely wear them. I’ve tried to do scarves and although I love the plaid I don’t like them on me. Too much around the neck. I do like it on the purse. Easy way to get the look without the bulk!

I have just purchased an all cotton, cream colored, cable knit, tunic sweater. I do feel that it can stand up to a plaid, bulky scarf. I sized up on my choice as to avoid any hugging and plan to wear a cami or long tank beneath for that ease of comfort feeling. I haven’t jumped on board with the leggings train yet! Why not, I just don’t know! I plan to wear this sweater with my slim fitting jeans. I have a gorgeous, long, soft green scarf that I will drape over this for some added color.
So, yes, I do love this look!!

I have owned J.Jill chenille sweaters and they are so soft. I absolutely love the cable design on this one. Pair it with any leggings and some boots and I am good to go. The scarf adds the perfect holiday accent and the purse would also be a fun addition. I wouldn’t carry the purse other than during the winter months though. This outfit is a definite “yes”!

It would also work well with slim pants.

  38. Eileen
    December 5, 2020 / 5:17 am

Not for me, the cables are too thick, and polyester isn’t my favorite. As a summer, I don’t wear black and red much, so no to the plaid also.

I love cable knit but in cotton it blends not chenille. Chenille just doesn’t appeal to me at all. But I love leggings and wear them often in our new covid casual mostly at home lifestyle.
Onto the scarf and bag and top in the red / black plaid. I love it. I actually have had this scarf for years- way before this years’ popularity!

I love the outfit you picked out this week. I think the purse is totally fun and would go great with jeans as well as the leggings. I haven’t always felt comfortable wearing leggings ,but found some heavier weight ones by Kenner and Kylie( I think at T J Max) that made me feel ok wearing leggings. So that being said I like the sweater better with the leggings. To me it is a smoother look. I am glad you tried on the two different size sweaters. The one on the left to me was the prefect. You gave me something to consider the next time I try something on that doesn’t quit fit. Instead of going up or down a size it also could be weather a petite or regular size would make a difference .
I am new to your blog and just want to say I really enjoy reading it . I look forward to it every morning ,have a great day.

The sweater is really nice. Love the cable details. I looked at the link – creme, periwinkle and plum are colors I would wear. The problem is 100% polyester. This sweater would be a major hit in 100% cotton. I would wear the leggings and the scarf and pass on the purse. I prefer black leather. Happy Saturday!

  42. Lisa
    December 5, 2020 / 5:04 am

Probably not. It’s an outfit I’d like on someone else, but I think the length of the tunic in the bulky sweater is not something that calls my name. I might shop my closet for a variation of this look.

  43. Audrey J Calcagno
    December 5, 2020 / 4:59 am

The cable sweater wouldn’t be the best choice on my boxy figure, but I adore the rest of the look, especially the plaid.

  44. Gayle
    December 5, 2020 / 4:56 am

I wonder if the bulging sweater is the type of yarn. Some knits just don’t drape very well. Otherwise I would wear with stretchy jeans and work boots! Rediscover a favorite color! I wear a lot of red. Looks fa on you!

I love the tunic and it’s great that it comes in petite because I find regular tunics are sometimes so long that they look like a short dress on me. I pretty much dress like this all through the cooler months. Tunics and leggings are my uniform, I guess! I love the scarf as well.

    • Jennifer
      December 5, 2020 / 7:07 am

I want to wear the outfit. I love cable knit and like the look of the tunic. I’ve not worn leggings in public like this. I would definitely wear this outfit at home. Red isn’t a good color for me, I would wear the plaid and choose a different color.

  48. Belinda
