Would You Wear It – Button-Up with Shorts

Would You Wear It – Button-Up with Shorts

Welcome to the weekend and would you wear it. This is when my friend Pam and I share a mannequin and ask if you would wear what it’s wearing. We do this foster communication in the comments and better understand your fashion preferences.

I don’t tell you what I think because I want to know what you think. Please explain your answers and don’t simply insult the mannequin. Yes, she has no feelings but the other readers who may like this look, do have feelings:)

So tell me, ladies, would you wear this combination and why or why not.

Here are the weekend sale updates:

Talbots – 25% off full-priced and additional 15% off sale. Their new August collection is in and it’s a beauty.

Ann Taylor – 40% off pants with the code PANTS). An extra 70% off  3 sale items, extra 60% off 2 sale items and extra 50% off 1 sale item.

J.Jill – extra 40% off all sales styles. Free shipping over $125 with the code FS0717 – plus 30% off select full-priced dresses.

Nordstrom – the anniversary sale is on but prices go up on Monday.

Here’s what I ordered for Mr. AWSL:)

Now let’s go see what Pam’s mannequin is wearing here.

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

I like Bermuda length shorts or just above. Unfortunately these are a bit too short for me. I like the cool, crisp blouse though, and would wear it! The color is cooling. I like the sleeve too.

The top – I like the color and style but the fabric belt is too much. Remove the belt, unbutton the top button, add dark straight jeans now I’ll wear this. The shorts are too short for me.

    August 3, 2019 / 4:35 am

Nice look for a tall, trim woman. I’m 5’2” and 120 lbs. so I’d look stumpy and overpowered by this outfit. Some people can carry it off though!

    • August 3, 2019 / 5:04 am

I have a similar body type to yours, Lisa, and agree that the shirt would overwhelm me. Love the color of the fabric, and agree with Paulette and Mary about the shorts: bermuda length or long pants for me.

      • Karen
        August 3, 2019 / 11:04 am

I too am 5’2″ This sleeve style creates a strong horizontal line that makes us appear shorter and wider. Since I sew, I restitch this type of top into a sleeveless style with a high armhole. The nice part about the original style is that there is usually enough fabric that I can easily accomodate my large bust by adding a bust dart. If you don’t sew, a professional seamstress can easily do the same thing.

        • August 3, 2019 / 9:47 pm

          You’re lucky to sew

    August 3, 2019 / 4:42 am

At my age, I don’t show that much leg so the shorts are not long enough for me. I’d wear the blouse without the belt.

  5. Merri
    August 3, 2019 / 4:42 am

I would not wear. The shorts for me need to be longer and the top would need to be unbuttoned a bit. I think this top with a simple skirt might work for me!

  6. Lydia
    August 3, 2019 / 4:51 am

The whole outfit sings; but…..the arms and legs aren’t what they used to be, so I could not wear it.

  7. Margaret
    August 3, 2019 / 4:56 am

This mannequin has a long waist and long legs. Lucky mannequin. The outfit looks good and a little retro on it. With my short waist people would wonder if I had anything on under that nice blouse.

    • mrsben2
      August 3, 2019 / 6:28 am

Even though not sure of ‘her’ exact measurements, do know mannequin’s standard heights often range from 5’9 to 5’11” so you are probably correct about her long waist and legs … ☺. -Brenda-

  8. August 3, 2019 / 5:06 am

I like longer shorts than these, but when I was young I used to wear way shorter shorts than this. The top has a lot of details about it. It is nice to see something with interesting details. I doubt if the top would look very good on me. I generally look better in something with a different type of sleeve than this. I think these might be dolman sleeves which are not flattering on me. Makes me look like I’m kind of melting, or slouching. I kind of feel a 1960’s vibe with the cut of this top around the neck, the buttons, color, and belt.

    • Susan
      August 3, 2019 / 5:28 am

I love the outfit, but I am not sure I would wear shorts that short.I like the waist definition on the shirt

    • Joanna
      August 3, 2019 / 7:50 am

I like everything about the top. The sleeves would balance out my narrow shoulders and the tie waist would accentuate my small waist. Love the colour! I’d unbutton the top button and pop the collar.
The shorts are too short for my less than ideal legs. I’d wear this top with narrow legged capris, or slim fitting cropped pants.

  9. Teresa Landers
    August 3, 2019 / 5:12 am

Like it ex the shoes. Flats would look better. The heels have a “trying too hard” vibe

  10. Sue G
    August 3, 2019 / 5:14 am

I might! I would like the shorts longer but since I’m shorter than the mannequin – shorts (and skirts) are normally longer on me so this outfit might be the right length. The top is clean and crisp and the longer look would lengthen my torso.
I would really like it in a silky fabric for work – it’s polished but trendy.

  11. Donna Lukens
    August 3, 2019 / 5:27 am

The top reminds me of my high school gym suit from the early 70’s! Same color and cut! So a definite no for me. The shorts are a bit too short! I do like how full the leg cut appears.

  12. Betty (SC)
    August 3, 2019 / 5:30 am

Longer sleeves, longer shorts, and more feminine sandals. These sleeves hit at the widest part of the upper arm. The longer shorts would bgove more illusion of longer shilouette rather than stumpy with the longer top here. The shoes are too clunky for a shorts outfit. Love the sash belt and the color!

  13. Diane B
    August 3, 2019 / 5:30 am

I would wear with longer shorts, but I do like the top. I would unbutton two buttons and wear a necklace of some sort. I would keep the belt to add a bit of shape as the length is long enough for that. Flat shoes or sandals and good to go.I like the colour as it is cool and there is so much of the warm colours out there.

  14. Ellen
    August 3, 2019 / 5:35 am

Theoretically? I would wear it. I love the color of the shirt and the length of it with the shorts.
IRL? That belt would look horrendous on me! If you didn’t wear the belt, the shirt would be too long for any length shorts, I think. I would wear a shirt just like that, only a bit shorter, not buttoned to the top, and not quite so voluminous, with those very shorts. In fact, as we speak, I am about to get dressed in a similar outfit, the shirt is bright pink, a bit shorter and not gift wrapped, and the shorts the same length. I like flattish sandals with this length shorts. I am 67, got a belly, but still got The Legs. I do not wear shorts any shorter than these and though vain about The Legs, do not wear short skirts.

  15. Sheryl
    August 3, 2019 / 5:38 am

The large openings of the sleeves is a problem for me. I would be concerned that there would be “gappage” and one could see my undergarment…thus forcing me to wear a cami underneath the blouse, which isn’t ideal in warm weather. As for the shorts, I would prefer a black A-line skirt with a length that comes just to the top of the knee….seems like the detail of the top overpowers the shorts and a longer line is needed for the bottom piece.

    • Janey
      August 3, 2019 / 2:43 pm

I agree, the outfit would like great with a black heavy cotton skirt. I love the top, and that style of sleeve but I cant wear it as I am heavy up top but with very thin arms. Sleeveless or more fitted sleeves look better on me.

  16. Deborah Broughton
    August 3, 2019 / 5:43 am

I would not wear the shorts that short any more. The top is something I would try on,as someone else said with out the belt and open the collar. I like that sleeve and have a couple of blouses in that sleeve style.

  17. Debbie Davis
    August 3, 2019 / 5:43 am

I don’t do shorts, so I wouldn’t wear them, but the blouse is adorable!! I think the fabric belt makes the top! Beckons back to the forties – pics of my Mom on vacation. Love the color as well!

    • Pam
      August 3, 2019 / 7:16 am

I agree with Debbie. Also, am I the only one who doesn’t know what the “ASWL” stands for in “Mr. ASWL”?

      • Dorothy
        August 3, 2019 / 7:42 am

I believe it’s Mr. A Well Styled Life.

      • Susan Gowan
        August 3, 2019 / 2:46 pm

I am not a fan of the shorts. for me but I do like the blouse, the bold colour, the style and would wear it with a long skirt or a pair of culottes or a pair of skinny jeans.

      • August 3, 2019 / 9:57 pm

Oops? Did I say ASWL? I meant AWSL- Mr. A Well Styled Life. I really do need to think of a new name for him.

  18. Pauline
    August 3, 2019 / 5:58 am

I would wear these pieces but…….I love the color of the blouse but, I wouldn’t wear the belt since I don’t need to accentuate my non-waist! I would unbutton the top two buttons on the blouse because I hate the feeling of being strangled. The shorts could be a little longer but, they’re not Daisy Dukes so they’re an ok length for me. My legs are long and any longer shorts aren’t exactly the length they’re supposed to be on me!

  19. Freda Witt
    August 3, 2019 / 6:09 am

Like most of the other ladies, I don’t do shorts any more. I’m short 5’1″, so the top would be overwhelming. I don’t like the sleeves either, you could see through them. Like the color though.

  20. August 3, 2019 / 6:23 am

The outfit is nice, minus the shoes, and I’d have to have the top 2 buttons undone. I used to be tall and thin…now I’m just tall; I’d buy it for my granddaughter, though, and pair it with a flat shoe.

  21. mary jo
    August 3, 2019 / 6:38 am

would not wear this outfit. personally I think it looks frumpy. might be the pairing of the two.

  22. Beth
    August 3, 2019 / 6:38 am

I love that shirt so much that I would go out and buy it this weekend. Where is it? The combination is fine but I don’t wear shorts because of some blood staining on my legs from swollen ankles. But there are tons of other things I could wear it with.

    • August 3, 2019 / 10:01 pm

      The shirt is from Nordstrom

  23. Laura
    August 3, 2019 / 6:46 am

I wouldn’t wear it…I like the color of the top, but it would look awful on me with my big bust and short torso. I still have decent legs so I could wear the shorts, but I’m more comfortable in a longer length. I’m not a fan of the shoes with the outfit. I’d definitely wear them with jeans, though.

  24. mrsben2
    August 3, 2019 / 6:48 am

Love the colour of the blouse, however not fond of the raglan short sleeve due to the reason Sheryl (above) pointed out. Seoncdly, IMHO since the cut is somewhat overall loose (for comfort and coolness) I would eliminate the tie belt altogether and wear it with a more open neck. As for the shorts and their cut ‘n length; if you have the legs …. I say …. flaunt them! ☺ Wishing you a beautiful weekend Jennifer.

    • August 3, 2019 / 10:00 pm

      Thank you Brenda! Happy Weekend

  25. GriselleCC
    August 3, 2019 / 6:55 am

I won’t wear it because it won’t look right on me. I prefer longer sleeves and no belt. The shorts are too short for me.

    • August 3, 2019 / 10:00 pm

      Thanks for explaining why

  26. Rose
    August 3, 2019 / 7:10 am

That outfit would look great on some people, just not me. I don’t wear shorts anymore and the top would overwhelm me by it’s a nice color.

  27. Dawn
    August 3, 2019 / 7:19 am

Love the shirt, but I don’t wear shorts anymore, so would wear it with skinny jeans and flat sandals. I would leave the top two buttons unbuttoned for a more casual vibe.

  28. Mary
    August 3, 2019 / 8:05 am

I would not wear it. The color of the shirt is pretty but I have too much fat around my middle. And those shoes detract attention from the outfit rather than compliment it, in my opinion.

It would be a cute outfit if the top was a bit more shaped with darts and if the belt was ditched. Lengthen the shorts a little bit and wear less clunky black sandles.

  29. Cindi
    August 3, 2019 / 8:07 am

I love this outfit! It’s my preferred casual outfit in the summer. I like the top, color and everything. It’s perfect with the black shorts. I could see it being a transition piece with jeans later.

  30. Anon
    August 3, 2019 / 8:21 am

Vintage Hollywood starlet is how I would describe this look. I like it, but I don’t wear shorts.

    • August 3, 2019 / 9:55 pm

      I love that description

  31. Dena
    August 3, 2019 / 8:36 am

I really like the blouse, but it almost overwhelms the shorts. I think I would wear it with some skinny jeans. I think a less “blousy” blouse would look better with shorts. I don’t have a problem with the shorts. I am 64 and my legs are still in pretty good shape so I do wear shorts. Living in the deep south, shorts are a necessity. But, finding the right length is challenging especially if you are tall with long legs.

    • August 3, 2019 / 9:50 pm

Thanks Dena. Tall with long legs has always been a dream for me.

  32. August 3, 2019 / 9:05 am

The top is cute, but I would not be confident or comfy wearing it and I really haven’t worn shorts in a couple of years. So it is a no for me.

  33. Susan McClelland
    August 3, 2019 / 9:13 am

I love the colour of the blouse and would wear it. even with the belt. I also like the shorts but not with the blouse. I would trade the shorts for a slim capri (black, white, patterned), cute sandals and a necklace. I don’t like fabric around my neck s0 I would open up the buttons.

    • August 3, 2019 / 9:49 pm

Thanks for sharing how you’d style it

  34. Lucretia Roletta
    August 3, 2019 / 9:45 am

Shorts are too short. I love the color of the blouse and think it would work with a different length pant.

  35. Denise
    August 3, 2019 / 9:54 am

I’m a 5’2” pear shape so this outfit would not be for me. On someone taller with the shorts a little longer and the top a little shorter it would look great. Being the height and shape I am, I like to stick to all one color and not be cut in half by the belt.

  36. Martha Barnett
    August 3, 2019 / 10:54 am

I’d totally wear this! It looks cute! I like the self-tie belt on the shirt.

  37. Laura Bratcher-Page
    August 3, 2019 / 11:19 am

I’d wear the top, unbuttoned at the top, but not with shorts that length. Bermuda shorts or a skirt would be better–the outfit looks disproportional.

  38. Becky
    August 3, 2019 / 12:13 pm

The outfit as styled would be a no. The proportions would not be flattering to me. I like the color of the top but wouldn’t button it up all the way. The width of the sleeve is a bit concerning as someone else mentioned. I too would be afraid of revealing a bit too much. If that weren’t the case, I might wear it over slim pants or jeans. The shorts are too short for me.

  39. Patti Shannon
    August 3, 2019 / 12:15 pm

I no longer wear shorts of any type and the top’s too fussy for me!

  40. Lily
    August 3, 2019 / 1:45 pm

The giant fabric bow, right at the waist, would be a disaster on most real women I would think. The top is a pretty color and appears to be cotton so those are pluses. The over all look is dark, so I guess this is a transitional outfit. I wouldn’t wear shorts in anything but the hottest of weather. This length looks better proportionally for me.

  41. Lea
    August 3, 2019 / 2:02 pm

The shorts are too short for me and if fabric was added to the top, change the neckline to a vee and change the colour… then I’d wear the dress. Love the fabric belt! So, no to the top as is.

  42. Kay
    August 3, 2019 / 2:13 pm

The outfit is cute, and I would wear it if I could. No shorts for me, alas.

  43. Katrina
    August 3, 2019 / 3:25 pm

The top is too loose & puffy looking. I never wear a self-belt. I usually cut off or discard any self-belts and if it does need a belt I choose one of my own. I still wear shorts but somehow this looks unbalanced – perhaps a black belt with cute black flats.

  44. Gloria Pigue Miller
    August 3, 2019 / 7:29 pm

I would not wear this outfit. The color of the shirt is lovely but the style is wrong for my body. I have no waist and I’m short. The self belt would just exaggerate my lack of shape. And being buttoned up to the neck would leave me feeling bulky and choked. The shorts would need to be a bit longer for my liking.

  45. Conda
    August 5, 2019 / 12:32 pm

I like the outfit. I would wear the shirt, but with longer pants. I am uncomfortable in shorts so I wouldn’t wear them.

  46. August 6, 2019 / 3:19 pm

I would wear the top. It looks like a style I wore in the 80s. Maybe exchange the self belt. Or not. As for the shorts. I don’t know. I haven’t worn shorts since the 90s.

  47. Christy Browning
    August 6, 2019 / 3:39 pm

I like the top. Though I would put a different belt on it. It reminds me of styles I wore in the 80s. I haven’t worn shorts that short since the nineties.

  48. Pam
    August 8, 2019 / 2:56 pm

    Got it – thanks!
