Would You Wear it? Caramel and Ivory

Would You Wear it? Caramel and Ivory

Happy Saturday and welcome to the weekend. Each Saturday my friend Pam and I share a mannequin we have photographed then ask if you would wear what she’s wearing. Merchandisers dress their mannequins to show us what’s new and inspire us to buy. To be honest, some are brilliant and some are train wrecks.

Since style is in the eye of the beholder we want to hear why you like an outfit. Does it fit your shape and lifestyle? What won’t it work? Is it the wrong proportion or does it make you appear larger where you wish to appear smaller?caramel suede jacket and white skirt on A Well Styled Life

Please be constructive. You may hate it but another reader may love it.

Here are the weekend sale updates:

Banana Republic – up to 40% off must have styles and extra 40% off sale

Soft Surroundings – summer sale going on now

J.Jill – 30% off entire order and free shipping over $125 with code SUMMER19

Both outfits are really pretty. I could wear the one on the left, but the pants on the right are a peculiar length for short girls like me. However, I like the top.

      I agree 100%

Nothing appeals to me here. The outfit on the left looks too winter for now. The buttons on the dress are too big for me. The striped top and wide pants are cute but not my style and not my colors.

I agree with all of your comments. Wrong length of pants for those of us who are shorter. Jan

Lol – I wouldn’t have been seen dead in these colours right up until this year, now I can’t get enough of them! Funny how I’ve totally changed my views, nothing but jewel colours for the past 30 plus years.

I’d wear both outfits, except skinny or straight long pants suit me much better. It’s also growing colder here in Australia, *technically* winter (today was nearly 82 degrees F) so the colours are quite wearable for the season.

      June 19, 2019 / 10:15 pm

In Tassie winter’s really here. So it’s warm apparel for us. Like the colours but wrong shade for me. Sandals are sweet, & work with both outfits don’t they!

I like the color combinations and as a redhead I believe they would look good on me. However, I agree with Gail-the colors are wrong for summer and the style of pants would not work on a short girl like me!

Love the colors. Short jackets are good for me as a petite, and I like the little striped top. The silky shirt dress might work too depending on the sleeves and fit. Button front dresses and skirts that are straight often gape, especially when sitting. I usually avoid them for that reason. Depending on where the length hits on my legs, ( below calf) and the softness of the fabric, I could wear the wide pant. I’m glad wider pant s are returning. I do not look great in skinny pants. I think my legs look exactly like chicken drumsticks. Even with long tunics the proportions are off unless worn with a high heel.

In my opinion it’s a bit difficult to find any clothing appealing on those strange android looking mannequins. Mannequins used to be so pretty.

I like the pants outfit but I don’t wear sleeveless . I would need a jacket in some lightweight fabric. I just don’t like the dress with the dark jacket. Too much contrast for me. Maybe if the jacket was more summery.

    June 15, 2019 / 4:56 am

I like both outfits although I think my upper body is to old for the top on the right with out a jacket. I live in Maryland where the weather is often hot through October. I like to wear fall colors in September and October and still need them to be summer weight. If I felt I needed a little pop of color I would change out the shoe and add a chunky bracelet, scarf or purse. This is also the perfect time to wear booties with the toes exposed.

    June 15, 2019 / 4:58 am

I love both outfits and would wear either of them if they were in a different colours. I just don’t care for those shades of brown. I will honest I don’t wear any brown.

  9. June 15, 2019 / 4:59 am

I saw your headline and immediately thought I would love that color combination…but not these outfits for me. First they do not communicate what I want to say with my wardrobe pieces. I am even tempted to try anything on here.

    • Lea
      June 15, 2019 / 5:30 am

I agree with Pam. I suppose the colour combo brought an image of sophistication to mind, somewhere along the lines of the European storefront. I wouldn’t give this one a second glance, it’s too sad-looking. Sorry.

      June 15, 2019 / 7:34 am

Great point. We make assumptions about colors but the style matters a lot.

I am not fond of either of the two items at the front of this email. I do not think the colours will suit me and I don’t like the style. That is just me. The items may look great on another girl.

I really like these outfits. I think I would wear everything here. I am short but I think I’m getting used to this length and width of pant and would try them. I also own a jacket somewhat like the one on the left in a light beige colour. I’ve had it for years and love it.

  12. Susan Gowan
    June 15, 2019 / 6:05 am

I prefer the outfit on the left. Like the striped top but as someone else already mentioned, I would need to use a shrug or light jacket. Like the camel pants but not sure if pockrts would bulge and be unflattering.

  13. Phyllis
    June 15, 2019 / 6:05 am

I love both outfits. The colors look rich and gorgeous; but those colors are not for me. The top on the right is a bit “girly” for my age, but with a jacket it would work.

  14. Maureen
    June 15, 2019 / 6:06 am

The color combos are great. The outfit on the left works because it would hide my not so slender waist with the jacket. My not so slender waist is the reason the outfit on the right wouldn’t work.

  15. Ellen
    June 15, 2019 / 6:11 am

Love the pants outfit and would wear it in a second but for the sleeveless top which I just can’t do because of my my wavy upper arms. Why is everything sleeveless? I have noticed that for most older women, even the most toned and trimmed of them, sleeveless is just not a good look.
The dress and jacket outfit seem haphazardly thrown together; the jacket is nice and I would wear it, but the belt on the dress interferes with it, and who knows about rest of the dress?

    • Jennifer
      June 15, 2019 / 7:30 am

The sleeveless debate continues. I hate sleeveless on all but the hottest days.

  16. Susan M.
    June 15, 2019 / 6:19 am

I like the color combinations of both outfits. I would wear the jacket and dress, but the rolled up sleeves on the jacket look sloppy–I would prefer a more careful turn up of the sleeves. The striped top is pretty, but I think I would be fussing about bra straps and a too low neck line. Being petite, I don’t think the pant length would look good on my figure, but I love the color.

  17. Mary
    June 15, 2019 / 6:20 am

Agree with all that it’s not a spring/summer color. It’s also not a great color for me now that my hair is silvery. I would like the pants in a different color and might try on the dress, again, in a different color. The jacket isn’t a good cut for my frame and the top doesn’t appeal to me.

  18. Eileen
    June 15, 2019 / 6:26 am

Not for my coloring mostly. I prefer more fitted silhouettes, and the fabric appears so-so.

  19. June 15, 2019 / 6:48 am

Love the outfit on the right…but only with the jacket from the left or a soft sweater. No sleeveless tops for me anymore. The colors are definitely more “Fall-ish” to me, so I would save it for one of those lovely Fall days when it’s just a little cool.

  20. Sue G
    June 15, 2019 / 7:00 am

As a redhead these colors are perfect for me! I would definitely wear the brown jacket and dress in early fall. The stripe top is probably a no because the square neckline would not be flattering with wide shoulders and larger “girls”. While I normally don’t wear wide leg pants because of my height, these might work if they hit just below the knee.

    • Jennifer
      June 15, 2019 / 7:29 am

Thanks for sharing your styling ideas Sue

  21. June 15, 2019 / 7:13 am

I think wearing ivory and caramel sounds fine, but that dress looks like it has pink undertone that don’t play nice with the jacket. These are not colors that would look good on me but agree that they could be great on redheads.

  22. June 15, 2019 / 7:13 am

The dress is nice, but it probably wouldn’t look good on the older me. Same for the cute little top. Those styles work better on slender and firm figures. Structured is more flattering on me these days. The jacket is great, but for fall, not in 100 degrees. THe color combination is ok but not wow.

The pants belong to Tom Sawyer.

      #Tom Sawyer 👍😄

  23. Debbie Davis
    June 15, 2019 / 7:19 am

I like the outfit on the right, but maybe not for my body proportions. The outfit on the left leaves me feeling that the weight or visual weight of the jacket is too heavy in proportion to the dress. That I would not wear. Colors are beautiful…I have always loved beiges and browns…nice to see this color combo become popular again!!

    • Jennifer
      June 15, 2019 / 7:28 am

Thanks for explaining Debbie. It is a pretty combo

  24. Cindy
    June 15, 2019 / 7:24 am

I love these colors together. But of these, the only piece I like is the jacket. I’d wear it in the Fall.

  25. June 15, 2019 / 7:37 am

I do like both outfits but as others have mentioned the jacket on the dress left is like winter or fall piece. I like the outfit on right but again I would need to try those shorter pants on myself. Not sure….

  26. Susan McClelland
    June 15, 2019 / 8:01 am

I like the outfits, but not my favourite colour palette – I like bright colours! The pants would be a good neutral and look dressy enough for work. I love the jacket and would wear it but it’s probably too heavy for summer. It would be a good transition piece for late August/early September.

  27. Linda
    June 15, 2019 / 8:01 am

I would not wear any of these pieces in any combination. The cuts and colors are all off.

  28. Anne
    June 15, 2019 / 8:09 am

I have a leather jacket like that, but never wear it!
    Maybe have to reconsider.

  29. Barbara in NC
    June 15, 2019 / 8:37 am

I don’t find the jacket and dress combo troublesome as far as the weight of jacket vs the weight of the dress, although here in NC in the summer, nobody needs that weight of jacket in the summer. As a cool color person, neither of the outfits are appealing (unless I wear that jacket over a blue chambray shirt in the fall, that could work!). As someone over 65, I don’t expose my upper arms unless I am working in the garden! LOL And at 5’4″, I am not sure the length of the pants would be a good choice either, so … no. Neither is for me.

  30. Griselle Camacho-Claudio
    June 15, 2019 / 9:06 am

I like the color combination it not those styles, they don’t appeal to me.

  31. Ellen
    June 15, 2019 / 9:16 am

I like the outfit on the left very much, but to me, suede is for fall and winter, not summer. The outfit on the right is a little drab…I like the pants, but the top is both too young and dowdy at the same time. But I find analogous colors quite sophisticated.

  32. Stephanie
    June 15, 2019 / 9:45 am

Several short women have mentioned that the cropped pants would not look good on them. Well, I’m 5″12″ (get it?) and they wouldn’t look god on me, either. Think: the Incredible Hulk popping out of his clothes! The top on the right is a little skimpy for a large woman. I’ve got the coloring of a Winter, so I choose white over ivory, though I love ivory in home decoration. Also, orange (Caramel) is a NO! NO! color for me, but you;re right- it would look great on a red-head.

  33. Kay
    June 15, 2019 / 10:18 am

I like the colors, but the styles fall short for me. Button-front dresses always come unbuttoned on me for some reason. I’m not in general a fan of jean jackets, cropped pants or short tops.

  34. Susan
    June 15, 2019 / 10:25 am

I’m a redhead and tall, so I like the outfit on right a lot and would at least try the top. Why are we so self conscious about arms? We’re lucky to have ’em and so what if the skin isn’t youthful? Those straps looks as though they might actually hide the bra straps too. On a hot day this outfit would be really cute. I don’t love the dress and jacket because the juxtaposition of the light weight fabric with the suede jacket looks odd. And I don’t like self belts-would get rid of that one in a hurry. I’d sub out shoes for booties with this or a caged shoe.

    June 15, 2019 / 10:31 am

Like Pam, above, I was attracted to the “Caramel and Ivory” headline. But unfortunately these particular outfits do not appeal to me.

The colors are lovely. But … the jacket looks too much like fall/winter and doesn’t convey a summery, light look.

I like the fabric/print on the top on the right but I don’t like to wear sleeveless. A longer sleeve would be perfect! As for the pants, I cannot wear that length because I have shorter legs. A long, flowing pant would be lovely.

  36. June 15, 2019 / 10:47 am

I love the color combination of Caramel and Ivory and have been told it looks good on me several times. I would wear both of these outfits, with minor tweaking. The pants would look better on me without the big pockets. I really don’t need anything to emphase my hips, so I would prefer flat front pants. The length might OK without adjusting. I would prefer the same stripe top in a simple square neck( not so low) and sleevesless. Give me a more covered top in that stripe and pants with flat front and I will add a pop of red shoes vs those beaded slides.
The ivory dress is very iffy~ can’t see what’s under the jacket, but I like the ivory with the dark buttons. Not necessarily something I would wear, but Imlike it. I would buy and wear the jacket in a minute and I have one very similar.
Cream and caramel is one of my favorite color combos and I wear it often, even in the heat of summer.

  37. Becky
    June 15, 2019 / 10:50 am

I like the jacket but not for summer. It would look great in the Midwest fall with jeans. From what I can see of the dress, the top looks a bit too low cut for my taste. The striped top is too skimpy for my aging chest & arms, & the pants are the wrong shape & length for my short legs.

  38. Donna Doyle
    June 15, 2019 / 10:53 am

Would definitely wear the dress and jacket. Nice proportions and neutral color that could be changed up with different colors. Not fond of the other outfit. I’m too short and heavy to make it work.

  39. June 15, 2019 / 10:56 am

I love these color combos & glad they are reappearing. With that said now with my age 65+ & hair color it would be a push for me to wear either outfit. I like the out fit on the right & could see a slender younger women wearing it & be envious. The outfit on the left I think I had something similar in the 80’s to me it is classic and could transition to fall with a pair of brown boots. I agree with previous reviewer the mannequins are sad looking who has a body like that, even when I was in my 20’s I didn’t look like that

    • Patti Shannon
      June 15, 2019 / 11:28 am

I’m a no on both outfits. The dress would be fine on a younger woman but I’d pair it with a light summer shrug instead of the heavier appearing jacket. The pants on the second outfit are a strange length that would flatter relatively few women in my opinion. The top could work with some tan linen pants but wouldn’t be anything I would personally spend money for.

  40. Jen
    June 15, 2019 / 1:00 pm

both outfits work although colours are a little dowdy and non descript.
One of your better choice of outfits.
    More colour please

  41. Jane
    June 15, 2019 / 1:17 pm

I love all the pieces and with the addition of a cream T-shirt would be perfect for a weekend away in the city. Most galleries and museums are climate controlled so the jacket around your shoulders would be nice. By the way, my body shape and height (according to the internet) is a squat apple, and I wear whatever makes me happy.

  42. Karen
    June 15, 2019 / 2:11 pm

I like both outfits and the colors are divine, but not flattering for my coloring. It’s nice to see a display of wearable items.

  43. Darlene
    June 15, 2019 / 2:25 pm

I would wear the dress/jacket combo except in a cool color pallet, such as light blue and denim. The pants outfit is all wrong due to proportion. Cropped pants and tops don’t work for my short stature.

  44. Lily
    June 15, 2019 / 4:24 pm

I love the colors. Very sophisticated. I am thinking about adding burnt sienna to my wardrobe but, I really don’t need any more colors! The dress with jeans jacket is something I would wear. I like the striped top but wouldn’t buy it because it can’t be tucked in. The pants are a miss. The pockets look cheap and the width and length are wrong for me. Cute and colorful sandals.

  45. Cyndi
    June 15, 2019 / 4:25 pm

Super cute! I would need to try on the pants to see how that length looked on me and feel the jacket. Looks like it ‘might’ work better for fall than summer in the south.
