Would You Wear It- Coats in Many Colors

Would You Wear It- Coats in Many Colors

Welcome to the weekend and would you wear it. Each week my friend Pam and I each share a mannequin and ask our readers if they would wear what it is modeling. We want to hear your why or why not, so ladies can discuss it in the comments.

This is a window display at a major retailer so I have no links for you.

So tell me, ladies, would you wear this and why or why not.

Is the shape wrong for your shape?

Is the color great for you?

How would you style it?

No and no! Sorry, neither of these looks appeal to me, and I don’t believe I would even try them on. The dress with short coat just doesn’t look attractive…style, color combinations, shoes, all seem wrong to me. The Capri and jacket with turtleneck is just all wrong. Capris? If it’s cold enough for this jacket who would wear capris? The capris in navy with the turtleneck is not attractive to my eye. It’s rather dull. My question continues: who might wear this? I’m curious to see other comments.

I agree on all of your points, Paulette.

    • Linda
      August 24, 2019 / 5:01 am

I agree! Nothing about either of these outfits is appealing to me.

      August 24, 2019 / 7:15 am

The left coat I would not wear due to the brazen colour. Too bold for me. But I love the soft cranberry coat which would be a great stadium coat or for the serious drops in temps we Canucks will face in about a month’s time.I like classic but would go for cozy every time. The red shade would go with my silver locks.

  2. Freda Witt
    August 24, 2019 / 4:22 am

Nothing about either of these appeal to me. Don’t like the colors, shapes, and especially the way they are presented. Would it, maybe, appeal to a younger, edgier person?

  3. Linda
    August 24, 2019 / 4:23 am

No. Nothing in that display appeals to me. Capris in weather cold enough for the jacket, no. A cut out, patterned, dress with stripped socks, double no. No, nothing.

The large lapels on the trench coat are too large for my shorter heavier size. But I do like the color – it looks fun and cheerful. I don’t like the purple fuzzy jacket- it’s bulky, too boxy looking.

  5. Mary
    August 24, 2019 / 4:28 am

No. I have no interest in either. The yellow trench looks like a lab coat and the fur jacket just no.

  6. Suzanne
    August 24, 2019 / 4:29 am

I have to say, I love the fluffy coat! I like the idea of pairing it with lean / slim bottoms, although I’m quite certain I’d swap the capris for slim jeans. I’d probably wear them with pointy toed flats, though. I have a hard time mixing sneakers with a dressier top. And, even though she’s wearing denim, to me it’s not quite relaxed enough for the sneakers—yes, I’m showing my age! (Where can I buy that coat? Please share!)

  7. Sue
    August 24, 2019 / 4:30 am

I agree! It’s a hot mess. I love a colored coat but these combos are awful.

  8. Cindy
    August 24, 2019 / 5:01 am

I don’t purchase colorful coats, I stick to neutrals. I don’t have a lot of closet space for bulky coats, so my coats need to be versatile & work with many outfits.

  9. Linda B
    August 24, 2019 / 5:10 am

I really like and would wear almost all of the individual pieces (except the bare midriff), but would never combine them this way. Though we see it a lot in couture, this sort of jumbled mess of color and pattern paired with awful shoes looks like Well-heeled Homeless Person to me!

  10. Deb
    August 24, 2019 / 5:12 am

    No both outfits are awful!

  11. Amy
    August 24, 2019 / 5:13 am

Nope, the color for both is wrong for me. I also think of my coats as investments, these are both much too trendy. Finally, I travel a lot personally and professionally, they wouldn’t match anything in my travel wardrobe. Amy

  12. Kathy
    August 24, 2019 / 5:15 am

I like the fluffy coat…especially in the berry color. The deal-breaker for me would be whether it buttons-up well.
The rest of the outfit is OUT. WAY OUT!
A nice, slim, monochromatic line with it would look great.

  13. Karen Needler
    August 24, 2019 / 5:25 am

I wouldn’t have enough use for the style of the yellow coat, and the color is not my friend. The pea coat is more suitable style-wise and I love the color, BUT: although those fluffy materials are popping up everywhere, this fabric looks too youthful/cheap for me. I MIGHT get away with a Patagonia version that’s made of recycled material. AND: I don’t prefer double-breasted coats and jackets because there’s too much material when not buttoned up. I guess living in Vermont now I tend to wear more sports brands like Patagonia, Northface and the like. Always fun seeing your Saturday selections and reading others’ comments, Jennifer!

I feel these two styles are going to be on the 80% off sale rack at the end of the season sorry to say.

  15. Sue
    August 24, 2019 / 5:33 am

Everything about these is “off.” Having said that, there should be more bright, happy colored winter coats for those of us who live on the frozen tundra.

  16. MRSBEN2
    August 24, 2019 / 5:58 am

Oh my goodness; IMHO total combo weirdness however even though I feel both the colours of the coat and jacket are a breath of fresh air from the norm of neutrals and I could wear either style, I would only consider purchase if both were on sale due to my practical tendencies. As for the remaining pieces, I would pass as a bare midriff is just not flattering on any 73 year old and I don’t care how toned they are (☺), the capris are sloppy in appearance and the turtle neck appears somewhat drab. In respect to the footwear, perhaps and only with the right casual outfit.

  17. August 24, 2019 / 6:01 am

I would not wear the yellow one since yellow is not one of my colors. I like the purple/pink coat but don’t need one of these in Florida where it is unusual if we get down to 40 degrees F. in the winter!

  18. Barbara
    August 24, 2019 / 6:23 am

The only thing I like about this display is the yellow trench. A good color for me, and it is a nice way to brighten a gloomy day. I wouldn’t touch that dress or anything on the other mannequin. That faux fur is tacky, a dreadful color (for me), and too boxy.

  19. Susan McClelland
    August 24, 2019 / 6:25 am

I love the colour of the fluffy coat but wouldn’t wear it – I don’t like the feel of faux fur. Plus the shape is wrong for me. Yellow is not my friend, so a pass on the second outfit. I’m not a fan of socks with dresses on anyone over the age of 10.

  20. Bab
    August 24, 2019 / 6:37 am

Oh, heck no! Fashion designers create some of the most bizarre clothes and combinations these days.

A Haiku for Would You Wear It

    Oh my.
The stylists were having fun that day.
    They can’t be serious.

  22. Kathy
    August 24, 2019 / 7:11 am

The combinations on both mannequins are far too wild & crazy for my taste.
I don’t like anything about the combo on the left.
The fluffy coat on the right is pretty. I especially like the color. A deal-breaker would be whether it buttons-up well. Combining it with a lean, monochromatic line would look great!

  23. Eileen
    August 24, 2019 / 7:13 am

My guess is that the stylists were trying to show a crazy “ runway” look with cheap clothes made for the masses. And from what I see here, grunge is back, much of this can be found at goodwill. The purple color is interesting, but not the fit.

  24. Linda
    August 24, 2019 / 7:34 am

No to both because I cannot stand either color! I know both are the fall fashions finest colors but I definitely will be avoiding them!

  25. Shari
    August 24, 2019 / 7:41 am

    No no no!
The yellow coat looks cheap with the puckered hem. And I never can wear yellow or is it mustard?
The fluffy coat reminds me of a “car coat” I had as a Girl! Maybe my grand daughter might wear it , not me.
Why would a store put such a mess as this in their window?
I just read black is back as the big color for being chic……these are so not chic!

  26. Anon
    August 24, 2019 / 7:55 am

The merlot coat looks like a warm hug. I would wear it. Pefect for my pear shape.

  27. Laurie
    August 24, 2019 / 8:13 am

I love plush fabrics, so yes, I’d wear the purple coat. It looks very cozy and warm. I’d pair it with jeans and boots, maybe a grey felt hat. I don’t wear that color of yellow, so no to that.

  28. Joanna
    August 24, 2019 / 8:15 am

I like the style/cut of the yellow coat but not the colour. Yellow is not a good colour on me. It is cheerful though.
The Teddy Bear coat, while cozy is not my style. I don’t like them, at all! I can’t articulate why, because I don’t really understand my dislike. It’s a definite “No!”

  29. Suzi
    August 24, 2019 / 8:34 am

I have never commented on the “would you wear it” (here or on Pam’s site) because I have just accepted that the store stylist’s only goal is to grab your attention not entice you to buy, sadly. Having said that in who’s social circle do you wear striped socks/high tops (?) with a beach dress with a trench coat? Other commenters have already hit the issues on the other outfit. A turtle neck with short pants and a tundra coat that is better suited for a 10 year old. I’m never this negative but these two mannequins pushed me over the edge.

    • Ann
      August 24, 2019 / 8:43 am

I have to agree with you Suzi. It’s as if the stylists are trying to put together the most awkward and unattractive outfits possible.

    • Susie
      August 24, 2019 / 8:45 am

The social circle of the town drunk, as that is what I would have to be to wear that outfit !

  30. Pauline
    August 24, 2019 / 8:44 am

In my imagination, the coats just came in and they decided to throw a couple on the manikens that were dress for summer! I can’t imagine anyone actually stepping out in either of these outfits as displayed! I love the fluffy burgundy coat, the faux fur coat is one of my favs for a really cold winter day! I actually have a single breasted jacket that looks like faux mink and is machine washable/dryable! I love it!

  31. Rose Brock
    August 24, 2019 / 8:54 am

No I would not wear either of these outfits. Everything is just too much! Maybe I’m just to old for these funky outfits!

  32. Laura
    August 24, 2019 / 8:57 am

I wouldn’t wear either of these outfits. The colors of the coats are not flattering on me and I don’t like the way the outfits have been put together. The fuzzy jacket would be cute on someone tall and slender, but I definitely don’t need anything to add bulk up top. I’d wear the trench coat in a more subdued color!

  33. Eve
    August 24, 2019 / 9:00 am

I just never need a coat where I live but if I did. I kinda like the big fluffy looking one. When I want to be warm style goes out the window and it looks warm. I like the color too. I would not wear the first one at all even in black. I’m more a jacket person.

  34. Penelope
    August 24, 2019 / 9:02 am

No neither, the yellow is an awful color for me and the plum fluffy one would instantly add twenty pounds or so. What I really want to comment on is the styling however. I noticed the mannequins at the front of Nordstrom looks much like this the other day- a wild seemingly random mix of styles and patterns. Is a hobo look a new thing? Does anything go? Is there any aspect of these wild combos that might work for me? Guess we will find out.

  35. August 24, 2019 / 9:11 am

I would wear the short fluffy coat in a tighter fit. I would wear it with fitted jeans or darker pants. The shoes on that model are starting to grow on me, so I would try those, especially now with my broken foot and needing safer footwear!
I would not wear the longer coat in yellow, but perhaps in tan or black. I don’t understand the sleeves rolled up on that coat. And the socks? And the dress? My muffin would be all over the place! I’m chuckling at Suzi’s comments! Too funny! love it. Some of those sales people might be out of a job if they continue to dress mannequins like that!
Pam’s skirt is not for me. No pleats on my short boyish figure. I’d wear that sweater with jeans though. It looks comfortable.

  36. Shirley
    August 24, 2019 / 9:45 am

I love the colors of both of the coats & have owned the bright.yellow color in a stadium coat which I was able to wear a lot since winter slax tend to be darker. I would purchase the short fluffy coat but nay if in a single breasted style. None of the clothing shown with the coats is appealing to me. Capris not appropriate in winter weather & I haven’t bared my midriff since carrying my twins. LOL.

  37. Arell
    August 24, 2019 / 10:54 am

I like both coats and I love coats with color! However, I would pair them with different clothes that what is displayed. I have always had black coats except once incollege where I had a dark red coat, which I loved so much. And I recurved the most compliments for. No one ever mentions my dark coats. If I could afford it, I would have several coats in lots of fabulous colors.

  38. August 24, 2019 / 11:02 am

The cuts are both wrong for me, but I do like the mustard color. I have a mustard car coat with toggle buttons I wear a lot & love it.

  39. Kay
    August 24, 2019 / 11:22 am

Yellow coat maybe. I like the cut. They fuzzy coat is ghastly! Looks like a Halloween costume.

  40. Becky
    August 24, 2019 / 11:55 am

No to both. The mustard yellow coat is the wrong color for me, & I am mystified by the outfit underneath it, especially the socks. I like the color of the fluffy coat, but it has been my experience that coats with pile don’t stand up to a Midwest winter. They become matted & ugly when put up against rain, sleet & snow.

  41. Cyndi
    August 24, 2019 / 12:17 pm

No to both coats. The style and length of each ‘might’ be okay but the color and the fabric are not for me.

  42. August 24, 2019 / 12:43 pm

Wow…the styling here is so bad. I would love to hear the conversation when this was being put together. Nothing here attracts me…although I might try the short coat if styled differently. This is one of the worst displays I’ve seen!

  43. Deborah Kerwin
    August 24, 2019 / 12:47 pm

No to both. I would have worn the yellow when I was younger but not now. Shades of being a school bus!

  44. Liinda
    August 24, 2019 / 12:57 pm

No! Nothing about the styles or colors are appealing to me as a 70’s with a classic look.

  45. beth byrd
    August 24, 2019 / 1:02 pm

    No. No. No.

I don’t understand or care for either outfit. Sorry but today I really can’t think of anything positive to say about either ensemble.

  46. Darlene
    August 24, 2019 / 1:23 pm

I would have to say no to the faux fur, but yes to the trench, even though not that specific color. I owned, and loved, a red trench coat that I wore throughout the colder months. I lost it by leaving it on a train while traveling through Europe and have been looking for a replacement ever since. I like to wear color as an outer layer, even if everything underneath is neutral.

  47. Angela in NZ
    August 24, 2019 / 2:16 pm

This is something that would be worn in young, trendy districts. Hope it wasn’t a display from a grown ups store!

    • Dot
      August 24, 2019 / 4:46 pm

I like the bright colors but the berry coat would be better with my silver hair. For those of us living in the desert, a winter coat in the morning and capris for afternoon makes sense as we go from 40 degrees to 70 in our winter. The outfits are edgy but with a few changes would be appropriate for me. Example, I would wear a dress with the yellow coat and no socks, perhaps cute flats. The berry I would wear a v-neck or scoop and maybe a decorative scarf that could be taken off as the day heated up.

  48. Lily Ann
    August 24, 2019 / 4:55 pm

I love the yellow color but not that coat for me. The fluffy cranberry coat I would wear in a heartbeat!

  49. Joanna
    August 24, 2019 / 6:08 pm

Wow! This post really brought out the worst in people. There were more negative comments than at any other (that I read).
I think the first trench is classic. Golden is the colour of the year but not for everyond.

  50. Pam
    August 24, 2019 / 7:38 pm

Didn’t love either mannequin, but I loved Ellen’s haiku.

  51. Lee Wilkinson
    August 24, 2019 / 10:16 pm

I like them both, but they wouldn’t like me. The wine/purple one is too big & boxy for my H-shape, but I do like the colour. . The lines of the yellow one would suit me, but all that stuff around the collar is a bit too big and the colour would look terrible!

  52. Cyndi
    August 26, 2019 / 5:39 am

I would wear both! I love a “wild” coat. How much fun it that?! I would wear the yellow to work & church and the short plum furry coat everywhere else! Love love.

  53. August 26, 2019 / 8:29 am

I would love to wear the yellow one but a little shorter as I’m only 5ft tall. I already have an off-the shoulders blouse in the same colour. It makes my face look happy! For the fake fur coat, I already have one similar to this one but in silver gray, it’s nice, warm and I love it. But I cannot say it’s not too bulky for my shape. However, during our cold winter days, I don’t mind the overpowering shape on my body. As long as it keeps me warm!
