Would You Wear It? Drawstring Waistband

Would You Wear It? Drawstring Waistband

We hit the road/ferry early today to head back to the US. Our holiday in Canada has been terrific but I will be happy to get home. There are bills to pay, laundry to do and a grandson to snuggle to bits. I spent our last day here shopping and wandering downtown Victoria. The sun was hot the skies were clear and I found myself wondering what it would be like to live there…

Welcome to Would You Wear It. I share my thoughts on clothes with you all week so this is your chance to tell me what you think. Each Saturday Pam from Over 50 Feeling 40 and I share a mannequin we have spotted and ask if you would wear what she’s wearing.

I spotted this mannequin at a boutique in Victoria.

So tell me, ladies, would you wear this and why or why not?

Now let’s pop over to see Pam’s mannequin here.

As you know, Nordstrom is not the only sale game in town so here are the weekend updates.

Ann Taylor is having their semi-annual clearance with 60% off sale and 40% plus 10% off new merchandise with the code MAKEPLANS.

NYDJ is having a 30% – 70% off sale merchandise with free shipping and returns, no code needed.

Neiman Marcus is giving an extra 20% off sale merchandise including Eileen Fisher here.

Loft is giving 40% off everything or 50% off for cardholders with the code HOTHOTHOT at checkout.

J.Crew Factory is giving up to 75% off original prices with the code CLEAROUT.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

It would not be flattering on my curvy figure. I don’t think I have ever worn a drawstring waist. Thanks for doing this with me, Jennifer.

This outfit is so casual it looks like something I might wear for lounging at home. I would suggest it for a teenager if someone wants to go out in it.

Only wear drawstrings on my pajama bottoms!

I love, love, love the casual vibe of this outfit! It would easily fit into my wardrobe. Might not look as good on my 60 year old body, but I would certainly give it a try.

Sure, it looks really comfortable. My waistline isn’t what it used to be and it’s great to be able to adjust things a bit when needed 😉

I like it. …..I like the colors and the casual look….BUT!!! First thing I do when I get home is cut the bottom elastic off each leg and hem them up….I don’t like elastic cuffs or tight legs on any pants….????
    I enjoy your posts!

As you age (I’m 77 now) your waistline expands!! ???? And there goes that ‘girlish’ figure you once had. I’m definitely not fat but I’m only 5’3” (you also shrink as you age) so wearing this type of waistline is not even a consideration for me. Why enphasize the worst part of my figure? I don’t need to look like a sack of potatoes in my ‘old’ age! Lol

I have drawstring linen pants and I find it difficult to find the right top, I hate when you can see the bump of the drawstring bow under the shirt and I don’t like the look of the half tuck on me. This top looks like it works on the mannequin, I would have to try it. I also love the colors and the bag, my only problem is the neckline on the shirt, I prefer a v neck.

Cute outfit until I noticed the fitted ankles. No thanks. There seems to be a trend of fitted ankle jogger pants. They look horrible.

I’d have to try it on. If there is not too much fabric adding visual weight. it’s cute.

  12. July 21, 2018 / 5:40 am

I would not wear that exact pair of drawstring pants as I don’t like the elastic ankles. I do however own a pair of linen cropped pants with a wider fabric tie that I absolutely love.

Good morning, Jennifer. We were in Victoria, BC last August for several days before we departed Vancouver on our Alaska cruise. We loved it, although it was far from our South Carolina home. I have recently purchased a similar pair of Patagonia linen (hemp) drawstring pants. They look great with loosely tucked in shirt, which I haven’t done in years! Safe travels for y’all today!

Jennifer, we would highly recommend Crystal Serenity that departs Vancouver then has several ports on the inner passage and disembarks in Seward. Our first voyage but we are spoiled to Crystal luxury that was all inclusive.

  14. July 21, 2018 / 5:52 am

Yes, I love this outfit. I actually have several versions of this. Stripes and olive green are two of my favorites … cute, sporty. Drawstrings are on many shorts also so should always try on to check the fit. We were recently in Victoria but I didn’t find anything that worked for me. The department store in the mall carried the same lines as Macy’s … I was hoping to find something unique.

I think boutiques are very interesting in Victoria. Hudson’s Bay has never had anything for me either.

Yeah…I would wear this…For me it has a kickassandtakenoprisonersvibe…This would be a great shopping at the mall and later out to lunch outfit…I like the RATE (rough around the edges feeling)…I also like the color…Stripe shirt works but a white shirt tied at the waist would also be a possibility…
Be safe as you travel home…low and slow…Travel mercies sent your way..

No. I have a stomach and draw string pants would only accentuate that body flaw.

  18. Deirdre
    July 21, 2018 / 6:03 am

I don’t mind the pants as much as others seem to. I actually own (and love) a similar pair in linen but they might not be as baggy, and they do not have the cargo pockets which add width as well. I would wear either a more fitted top or a longer one without stripes. Not a fan of the short loose top with baggy pants.

  19. Dianne

I would wear draw string but I don’t like band around the ankle.

  20. Cyndi
    July 21, 2018 / 6:15 am

Personally, not a fan of drawstring waist, elastic at ankle, or cargo pockets so those pants would be a no for me. Top is cute

    July 21, 2018 / 6:30 am

There was a time in my life when I’d have worn these pants in a heartbeat (in fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve had similar pants in my wardrobe). I can’t wear this now, as I carry all my weight in my stomach area. I do think these are appropriate for people with better waist lines however. It’s a cute outfit overall, but would not work for my body type.

  22. Elizabeth Simpson
    July 21, 2018 / 6:41 am

I would wear the shirt but not the sloppy looking pants …

  23. Diana
    July 21, 2018 / 6:52 am

My opinion; the outfit is cute, but not for everyone. If the top was a little longer, I would wear that, …it has to cover my tummy! The pants, are cute on slim figures and normal heights. If you’re short, they bag too much and if your tall, they are silly looking being too short. Being tall, I would give these pants a pass.

I love the comfort of drawstring pants, in linen, on hot summer days. These pants have a bit too much going on for me! I also love striped t-shirts!

Draw strings are fine if you have a small waste and flat behind… if not both are accentuated. I personally think these pants look too unrefined. For a woman my age. I would probably only wear them if I was going on a hike, otherwise I would rather dress in something more refined and classy.

  26. Jan

I don’t mind a drawstring but I don’t like the side pockets and fit around the ankle.

  27. Ruth
    July 21, 2018 / 7:25 am

Would be good for hiking….where no one would see me! We are way too pretty and special …to wear this after we are older than 12 years old!

Confession–I have pants like this that I bought for next to nothing at the beginning of the summer because my daughter liked them on me. I struggled at the beginning to find tops to wear with them, and I believed they were a bit too “young” for me (I am close to 60). Like the previous comments, I like to be able to hide my stomach, not draw attention to it with a drawstring. But I have worn them more than I thought I would, and I receive many positive comments when I wear them (and not just from my daughter!).

Short answer – no. I don’t like the cuffs on the top nor the cropped length. At 5’8″ it would be too short on me and the proportion would be wrong. I do like a scoop neck and stripes because I am narrow across the shoulders. I don’t like the elastic cuffs on the pants and find drawstrings a little sloppy. Plus, I think they would wrinkle a lot. This mannequin would not draw me into the store.

Too much fabric at the waist, I don’t care for drawstrings on anything, too much going on for me.

  32. Pat
    July 21, 2018 / 8:01 am

Yes I definitely would. I like the olive green as a neutral and love stripes as a classic. I have a pair of black pants very similar. The trick is to get them in a size where they fall straight from the hip so the look is and feels loose and comfy. I wear with flat sandals or wedge sandals or booties. This would be perfect for a day of errands.

I really like the small stripes on the top. The color of the pants with navy go perfect together! I would wear this on a day I want to be relaxed, comfortable and still stylish!

That’s amazing!! Great score. I need to look myself. I can never get enough of EF crepe.

  36. July 21, 2018 / 9:27 am

Though I’m not crazy about the wide elastic at the cuff of the pants, I love everything else about them. I have worn similar pants in the past and I would definitely do so again. I probably wouldn’t pair them with that particular top though. I love the stripes, but it’s too boxy for my liking.

  37. Cindy
    July 21, 2018 / 10:15 am

I think the drawstring pants look sloppy on the mannequin & would look awful on me. The horizontal striped top is a no go.
I’d only wear this by myself. At home. No lights on. Mirrors covered.

It would make me look wide as a house. “Body-skimmlng, not loose” is my motto. Some ruching is fine, but full-on gathering? Not so much.

  39. beth byrd
    July 21, 2018 / 12:03 pm

Those pants would not work for me at all. I’d have to be much thinner or much taller!

However, I do like the color and it pairs really well with the striped top. I think this outfit would be great (for me) if the pants were a more fitted style. Love that top!

The overall look of these pants are not my style. They look rumpled & the elastic cuffs might be ok for my teenage granddaughters, but not for me. I have seen some draw string linen pants with a matching tunic that looked cool & comfortable.

  41. Lise
    July 22, 2018 / 4:50 am

I would but not together. A more fitted top with these pants could make it less sloppy. Slimmer pants with the boxy top would be better overall for me. Lise

IMHO, most American woman dress too casual. I might wear this outfit to clean the house. To me it looks sloppy, too casual, sends a message “I give up; I am no longer trying”. There is nothing chic about it. Even for a young person with the perfect body, it would still look sloppy.
