Would You Wear It: Feather Detailing

Happy Saturday ladies, and welcome to the weekend. I’ve been soaking up family time with my daughter and shopping ’til we drop. ‘Tis the season and all, but wow, those crowds are crazy!

It’s time for would you wear it. Each week my friend Pam and I share a mannequin we’ve come across and ask our readers if they would wear what it’s wearing.

I also like to hear how you would style the look to make it work for you. We can all get inspiration from others, so please share.black pants and top with feather detail on sleeved

Feathers are very popular this season. The top has some feather detailing on the bottom of the sleeve.

So tell me, ladies, would you wear this? Could you style it to work for your shape, lifestyle or coloring?

Yes, I would wear this:) I love the feather fringe. Give me pompoms, fringe, etc. and I will probably go for it! I love little details like that as long as they aren’t overdone!

Nope. I like a sleek and elegant look. Maybe a feathered scarf as an accessory.

I like the top but short sleeves aren’t practical for me in the winter. I’m always cold and under a jacket, it would look like an ordinary black shirt. Agree with others that the styling does the shirt no favours. Skinny black pants with a bit of a sheen or a black velvet pencil skirt would show off the shirt. I would add black patent boots or shoes to add an extra pop

No! I don’t like the feathers – it looks like something my cat shredded. And the all black is too blah.

I might wear the top if it was a v neck. I think feathers are fun on a garment that flatters my shape!

    I’m too conserative so no.

This outfit is chic but I don’t like anything that tickles my skin or floats around me. I personally don’t really even like how they look on some clothing. I’ve been watching old Loretta Young tV shows and she wore feathery hats ( (1950’-60’s) and I found myself laughing at how absurd they looked to me. But that’s just my reaction. Hawaiian monarchs had feather capes that were amazing and beautiful. Native Americans had headdresses. So feathers in clothing have been popular for centuries. Why not now? Just not for me.

I like to keep my clothing simple, so it would be a No for me. Feathers and ruffles are too foo-foo for my aesthetic. Another may carry off feathers with aplomb.

I would not. It’s not in my color pallet, maybe if it were a different color. However it would look great on young women .

Cute fun look but not something on which I would many $ – it’s too memorable to get a lot of wear and not a classic that would span many seasons. More like an accessory that would carry me through this years parties (different venues, different crowd) without expecting it to be an investment piece. At the same time, this top could be cute with jeans or with dressier pants/skirts and could fairly easily transition to work to after 5 events so it might get a lot of wear during it’s time in the fashion cycle!

  11. November 30, 2019 / 11:57 am

Yes to the top! The feathers are just right touch of fun added to a plain black top. I would not tuck in the top, but wear it with slim cigarette pants. I would wear the top with a long necklace with just a little sparkle to add a vertical line. The pants shown are too serious and business like to be worn with that top. Also the fit of the pants is too big for the mannequin and looks sloppy.

    November 30, 2019 / 11:07 am

The top is appealing, but I likely wouldn’t wear it because the feathers would likely irritate me. I definitely wouldn’t wear it with those pants. The top is fun, & the pants are all business. The top with black velvet pants or something else less corporate would work better.

I kind of like it…for everyday wear -I am trying to put more fun in my wardrobe
    But I wouldn’t wear it.
I could just see the cats becoming fascinated with all that dangly stuff and jump for it, claws out.

      Cats would love it;)

This is great top — it would be fun for a holiday party or special occasion.

I’m not fond of the way it’s styled though. I like the pants, but they need a belt. And the entire outfit needs a bit of accessorizing … nothing overdone. Just needs a bit of oomph to really make this outfit stand out!

The feathers Just not for me and at this stage in my life I stick to jeans and less dressy pants styles. Formal events are not on my agenda. I’ve stood around waiting to go home too many times. LOL Family reunions, birthday parties, BBQ cookouts, outdoor festivals, I’m all for those.

The top is fun, but not in black for me. I’d wear it with a half-tuck, pretty belt, jeans and heels or booties. This is a top that can be dressed up or down, imagine taking your blazer off and… ta-da! Feathers! Lol

    • November 30, 2019 / 4:47 pm

      I love the fun styling!

Maybe if I was a Hollywood type!
    No feathers for my wardrobe.
I want to tell you a frustrating thing with Loft this week…..I loved a shirt in the store.
I came home without it, ok let’s order it on line.
Black Friday sales were on so it was 40% off but it was $12 to deliver!
Really! Just not going to happen!

    • November 30, 2019 / 4:46 pm

Ouch! I hate when that happens.

@Diane: I was somewhat disappointed as well but in my case it was when, I tried to order a $35.00 sale item . Briefly; though I am a Canadian resident I do have a USA address and regardless that payment was guaranteed and in US dollars the order was rejected. As never experiencing such before, I did contact their Customer Service department (vie email as their chat line was unavailable) and received a short explanation as to their policies for international and/or cross border customers that would have equaled a $130.00 difference in cost. Needless to say like yourself, ‘its just not going to happen’ particularly when one considers the above and that they do have ‘a few’ stores located in Canada where they are willing to do business no matter where you reside. -Brenda-

Echoing others, would wear the top with elegant black trousers and very little other assessories. Feathers are the star here. And yes, memorable, so not the same venue more than once! Another year, another party. P.S. I wore feathery trim to my first junior high dance in the 60’s .

As others have said, I don’t think the tailored slacks. go well with the whimsical top which would go better with velvet skinny pants or perhaps satin palazzos.
Personally I need long sleeves at this time of the year& feathers on sleeves seem impractical when a coat is necessary here in New England. It would work in a warmer climate where a shawl would be all you needed.

Probably not, feathers can be itchy, so not near my skin, the placement is awkward on this top. I would use a bag with feathers.

No, the top is a fun look, but I’m not a fan of it with the pants as pictured. I would style it with cigarette pants.

I’m a big fan of cigarette pants!

Top is okay without the feathers. Feathers could be used differently. Slacks are okay with another top and a fun belt.

  23. November 30, 2019 / 7:17 am

Looks like a fun party top! Would prefer it with longer sleeves. I like the feather look as fringe on a sweater or skirt.

No feathers, these on my arms would drive me around the bend!!!

I would definitely wear feather details on a top or dress. I bought a really cute brown knit cardigan with feather detailing down the front and wore it when I went to the “Rain Room” exhibit at LACMA.

Would not wear the two pieces as an outfit. Reason being too much of a contrast in style; as IMHO with the use of the feathered trim the top appears somewhat feminine (and dare I say delicate …. ☺) whereas the trousers with their wider waistband, belt loops ‘n fly opening to me are more masculine in style. As to how I would wear the top; briefly if wearing it with pants I would choose a slimmer cut with a side or back closure eliminating the bulk of belt loops and giving me the option of not having to tuck it in. As to the pants shown; I would be more apt to pair them with a tailored open neck (more than likely long sleeved) blouse/shirt or even a sweater, topped off with a complimentary belt. -Brenda-

    November 30, 2019 / 6:05 am

I agree that the pants shown don’t do a thing for this top. It needs a pair of black faux leather skinny pants or a jewel-tone wide-leg pair. I also agree I’d like the top much better if the sleeves were 3/4 so the feathers were lower on my arms. As it is, I wouldn’t wear it.

  29. Linda
    November 30, 2019 / 6:00 am

No this. I think the waistband looks odd and the feathers look me like fringe to me.

  30. Sue
    November 30, 2019 / 5:51 am

I would prefer the top have elbow length sleeves so the feathers fell onto my lower arm. I think it’s a fun party look. It’s a non blingy top that lets you add your own jewelry. Why style it with pants that have belt loops? Office on the bottom. Party on the top?

    November 30, 2019 / 5:50 am

If I were looking for a black blouse with that neckline I would try it on, particularly if the price is acceptable. Oftentimes embellishments like that are easy to remove so if you don’t like them you can take them off.
With that said, I would not be tucking that blouse in. To me the feathers make it a fun outfit, and fun outfits don’t have tight waists with blouses tucked in 🙂

I actually love this outfit,It’s a serious outfit with one touch of whimsy!Perfect

Perfect word for the feather detailing.

  32. Lauryn
    November 30, 2019 / 5:07 am

I would not wear this top. The feathers would be damaged by coat sleeves (Quebec winters are cold), laundering would be difficult, my allergies would be problematic and my style is not frilly. It would look cute on a younger woman.

  33. Kathy
    November 30, 2019 / 4:54 am

I would wear a small amount of feathers but to me, there is something “off” about that top. Not sure why, maybe the feathers are too long?

  34. November 30, 2019 / 4:52 am

I like this outfit very much! The tailored pants speak to me! The sweater/top with accent feathers spells FUN without being over the top! Lol.
Yes, I really do see myself wearing this outfit?

  35. MP
    November 30, 2019 / 4:48 am

I like this top. The feathers don’t look cartoonish. I like where the feathers are on the sleeves. I would wear this top with a fun skirt or cigarette pants to a holiday party. The pants shown here don’t fit the manniquin and look sloppy.

    • Katrina
      November 30, 2019 / 7:40 am

Right – the top is dressy, the pants are office casual. With black cigarette pants or something similar. But how would you put on your coat? The feathers are like jewelry – everything else should fade into the background. Simple is best here.

      • November 30, 2019 / 8:10 am

That’s a great analogy about the feathers.

  36. Michele
    November 30, 2019 / 4:44 am

If these are truly feathers I would not wear because my allergies would kick in and the top would become uncomfortable to wear. I also need long sleeves in the winter to keep me warm, so this outfit would require a cardigan. Kind of defeats the purpose to cover the embellishment. I look for tops that are embellished at the neckline so it can still be seen while wearing a cardigan or jacket. Solid column dressing is fine as long as you add a pop of color. This outfit needs some color, possibly in a pair of shoes and clutch.

  37. Linda
    November 30, 2019 / 4:28 am

I would wear it. My only concern, or hesitation in purchasing, is what the feathering would look like after the top is laundered.

Not my style . Not a Foufou person!

  38. Cindy
    November 30, 2019 / 4:28 am

I wouldn’t wear this top for several reasons. First, it looks like it would be itchy on my arms. It’s also too memorable. I’d wear feathers in an accessory like a scarf or earrings.

  39. November 30, 2019 / 4:22 am

i would wear feathers, but only on a very dressy cocktail outfit Where I live is not that dressy for most events. If I were 20 again, I might. I can see it on my 23 yr old greanddaughter or one of her friends.
