Would You Wear It?-Primary Colors

Would You Wear It?-Primary Colors

Happy Saturday and welcome to the weekend. It’s time for would you wear it. For many readers, this is their favorite post of the week. My friend Pam and I share a mannequin we’ve found during our travels and ask our readers if they would wear what the mannequin is wearing.

Readers love to hear other’s reasons so please tell us why the outfits would or wouldn’t work for you based on your lifestyle, silhouette or style goals.

So tell me, ladies, would you wear this or not? Please don’t critique or compliment without telling us why. We all learn from each other and I love hearing why things do or do not work for you.

Yes! I would wear this whole look. Love the red trench coat!

Yes! I would wear all of it and HAVE! Two thumbs up for this look.

Perfect! I look best in clear, true solid colors – NOT pastels, so I would wear this. Love the polka dots and love that red trench. Great look.

    A great look for spring!

Yes, definitely. I have worn this look many times in winter with a red wool coat!

I would definitely wear this entire outfit. Love polka dots and already have several pieces. Red is my color. Pants are s great basic. Well done on the entire outfit.

Yes, I would wear this in a flash! I have been looking for a true red spring coat for the last few years, although this looks like a yellow based red on my screen. I love the look of black and white with a pop of bright colour. I’m seeing a lot of pink and marigold colour spring coats here, but not the right red (sigh). And I just bought a polka dot blouse yesterday….

Yes! I love the colors, pattern, and cut of the pieces. Such a classy look.

I love this whole outfit and would wear it. The red is the wrong red for me, but I would still try!

I love the polka dot blouse and the skinny black pants and that bright pop in the trench is fantastic.

Love the whole look of this outfit – the red is an uplift on a dull day – well for me it is an every day look. Have made a few purchases this year in this wonderful colour.

I like the cut of the coat not the color. I would wear it in navy, black or army green. I would wear the pants and pass on the top. The dots are too big for me.

I agree with your assessment! Our closets probably look very similar!????

Replying to Mary’s renarks from March 2 4:53 AM. Bright red is too much for me. I would go for a toned down color or maybe royal blue.

  12. Janet
    March 2, 2019 / 4:53 am

I like the bright red coat (love colour!) but need a cool red and i don’t think this is. I still prefer other jewel ones over reds so red would be a second choice.

    March 2, 2019 / 4:55 am

I love that look. Polka dots are so fun and I love the red trench. I look much better in a red than a pastel so this would look great on me and the red is so bright and pretty. Great outfit.

    March 2, 2019 / 4:58 am

Yes. Yes and Yes! Not a big fan of double breasted coats, but I love wearing red coats. This is a very cheery red–would brighten the dreariest spring day. Love the cut of the pants too. May have to try them even though I have so many pairs of black pants. This is one of my favorite “Would You Wear It” outfits in a long time.

  15. Sheila
    March 2, 2019 / 5:02 am

Love the look. Polka dot blouse is a favorite. Red trench would be more flattering in a cool red & single breasted. Double breasted coats tend to make my widest part wider.

I love this look with bold colour blocking. Yes I would wear any and all of these pieces.

  17. Joan
    March 2, 2019 / 5:10 am

Absolutely. I love this look. Pastels wash me out. You can mix and match so much with the coat and the top and I have done this numerous times.

    March 2, 2019 / 5:11 am

I LOVE that coat and would wear this outfit anytime! The jacket color is one of my favorite spring colors!

  19. March 2, 2019 / 5:21 am

Yes. I would definitely wear this! The polka dotted top with red trench absolutely takes basic black pants from winter to spring. Love this look!

  20. Eileen
    March 2, 2019 / 5:26 am

I wear a lot of double breasted trench coats tied at the waist, but this one is very oversized looking, the sleeves look too large for me. The shape of the pants doesn’t work on my pear shape, I rarely wear ankle length, I prefer boot cut, long, and with some heel height. The dot top is ok, but I have to say, this look reminds me of “Holiday lunch”, where there is a sea of outfits like this, while nice, too predictable for me.

  21. Allison
    March 2, 2019 / 5:29 am

I have the J.Crew Sophie sweater jacket in red and it is the perfect TRUE red meaning not blue red but not yellow red either. Like Dior’s 999 lip colour it is universally flattering! Some reds look chintzy, can be the fabric, so choose wisely.
Pastels look washed out on me too and they can also skew a bit ‘twee’, as the Brit’s say, on an older woman. Red looks chic with black, navy, white etc. With the polka dots here or a navy and white stripe, divine!!! It can elevate an otherwise boring ensemble….but you have to wear red, it cannot wear you, because the woman in red gets noticed!

    March 2, 2019 / 5:32 am

Love this outfit for spring. Would probably not wear the red trench on me. I prefer blues, any variation or greys. The pants are very flattering. And the top’s classic look pleases me. I am so ready for spring!

  23. Lisa
    March 2, 2019 / 5:39 am

Yes! This look is totally me! However, I would prefer a single breasted trench coat.

    March 2, 2019 / 5:41 am

This is the first outfit on the mannequin series that I would wear as is. Love the colors. Great happy look for a rainy day. Makes me want to buy a red coat!

  25. Roxanne
    March 2, 2019 / 5:58 am

I already own all of these components, so a big yes! My skin is very fair and blonde hair, so I look best in primary colors/jewel tones. As others have said, pastels wash me out. Although I have a closet full of black pants, I never wear black near my face as it ages me. Color near my face is more flattering, and it makes me feel happy and confident. Great find!

  26. Mary
    March 2, 2019 / 6:09 am

    A universal hit! I guess it’s just a classic.So why is that?

Winner..winner..chicken dinner. The best look yet. So classy. Love the dots and that coat is sexy in a Bond way . Would love in kelly green. So cheery…!

  28. March 2, 2019 / 6:32 am

Lovely!! I do wear exactly that ootd often. My favorite would you wear it outfit.

  29. March 2, 2019 / 7:13 am

Yes I would wear this. Love the red and polka dots.

  30. Jeri Ray
    March 2, 2019 / 7:27 am

I love the overall look. I’m not a fan of double-breasted anything so would pass on that particular style. I do love the pop of color it provides. This color appears to be an orange red – beautiful but I need a blue red to complement my skin. The blouse and pants are very classic – that’s me.

  31. March 2, 2019 / 7:40 am

    Absolutely….love the colors and style!

  32. Leslie Brodbeck
    March 2, 2019 / 7:42 am

Love this whole look. I like the slim leg pants and the red coat is fantastic. I would wear the whole outfit.

  33. March 2, 2019 / 7:43 am

Yes! This is a great look and I would definitely wear it exactly as it’s shown. The red coat is a big winner!

  34. Anon
    March 2, 2019 / 7:52 am

The style is nice, on someone who suits orange. That is not me.

  35. Katie
    March 2, 2019 / 7:53 am

I think it looks great and color is much needed during a long winter – I would definitely wear it.

  36. Carol Gilbertt
    March 2, 2019 / 8:10 am

Yes yes yes! Love the red trench, polka dot blouse and black pants. Uplifting outfit yet still conservative and chic. Good job!

  37. Theresa
    March 2, 2019 / 8:18 am

I love red but cannot wear it with my coloring. If the coat were a different Spring color like yellow or green. I would wear it. I need some color in my life after this long cold winter! I love the slender shape of the pants since I am petite. I would prefer the dots if they were smaller.

  38. Jeanne bayley
    March 2, 2019 / 8:38 am

    Love it!

  39. Cindy
    March 2, 2019 / 8:55 am

I think this is a great outfit & everything looks so good together. However, the strong, bright color is not good for me so I wouldn’t wear this outfit in these colors.

  40. Katrina
    March 2, 2019 / 9:06 am

Love love love this!!! Black & white look great with any pop of bright color. The coat could be Kelly green, bright yellow, or even dusty pink. When in doubt: spots or stripes & contrast. Yes, this is a keeper!

  41. Sandy
    March 2, 2019 / 9:19 am

I agree with everyone that said yes, yes, yes. I, too look good in bold colors. Have fair skin and snow white hair, so lots of color looks good on me, too. I love all three of the pieces and would wear them in a heartbeat!! Great pairing.

  42. BeeeBeee
    March 2, 2019 / 9:25 am

It’s a great look, probably one of the best dressed mannequins you’ve featured. I can’t wear it, though, it is too high contrast for me and not in my color palette.

  43. Joanna
    March 2, 2019 / 10:13 am

I love the classic styling of this outfit. It’s the way I dress 90% of the time. You know I love red! Having said that, the shade is wrong for me. It’s more of an orange red, whereas I need a true red. I also love black & white dressing. It has a freshness about it. I prefer primary colours versus pastels. Pastels wash me out. I do have a blush purse and that’s the extent of my delve into pastel.
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  44. Kay
    March 2, 2019 / 10:24 am

That has “me” written all over it. I wear red a lot, and I love the slim black pants. I have a couple of polka dot blouses, and this one is really cute. Apart from the silly (IMO) half tuck, I would definitely be wearing this.

  45. Linda
    March 2, 2019 / 11:00 am

Entire outfit is a win so YES! Love that incredible red trench paired with the black pants and black dotted shirt.

  46. Susan
    March 2, 2019 / 11:24 am

Like so many other comments, I like the idea but not the details. A true red, not orage-y would be better. Single breasted is more flattering. If the blouse had white dots on black, it would give a leaner silhouette. Oh yeah, the pants should be a straight cut (pet peeve of the inverted triangle!).

  47. Sandy Thorpe
    March 2, 2019 / 11:25 am

I love this outfit! I love primary colors!
I am a spring season gal and look brighter and healthier when in fire engine red, light navy blues and white… the nautical look!
Hoping the brighter colors are coming back into fashion! I am NOt happy in the muted colorsi.e., light pink and faded coral!

However, my favorite coral lipstick is no longer on the market and the deeper tones or pale shades look terrible on one with really fair skin !

like this look but the red is the wrong color for me

    • RoseAG
      March 2, 2019 / 12:31 pm

I’m with Mary Lou. Like the look but red in such big patches does me no favors.

  49. Lily
    March 2, 2019 / 11:38 am

If I saw someone wearing this I would think they are very chic. Bold colors, nicely tailored. I would not personally wear this as I prefer muted, monochromatic outfits.

  50. Shari
    March 2, 2019 / 11:49 am

Yes, for sure….polka dots. Are always fun! Nice proportions, too!
Wondering the fabric on the jacket?? Is it all year suitable?

  51. beth byrd
    March 2, 2019 / 11:58 am

I don’t usually wear bright colors, but this outfit is WOW! It’s so classy and classic! Love that polka-dot top — that’s what pulls the whole ensemble together! Yeah!!!

  52. Connie
    March 2, 2019 / 12:15 pm

This is ADORABLE. I love red and have true affection for polka dots and black and white. I have put together similar variations on this same idea with sweaters and blazers. A red trench coat is ideal. What could be better than fighting gloomy clouds in red?

  53. Becky
    March 2, 2019 / 12:15 pm

I would absolutely wear this outfit. I wear a lot of red, & a red trench on dreary day would certainly be a day brightener. Flat front black pants are very flattering, & the larger black polka dots make the top fun & fresh. The only change I would make would be to either tuck the top totally in or wear it untucked.

  54. Cyndi
    March 2, 2019 / 12:21 pm

Love this outfit! The colors, the pieces, the lines…everything about it

  55. March 2, 2019 / 2:10 pm

Yes! Looks like a fun outfit, perfect for Spring!

  56. Helen
    March 2, 2019 / 2:29 pm

    Yes!!!!

  57. March 2, 2019 / 2:38 pm

Oh my gosh….YES!!! I would definitely wear this. LOVE everything about, especially the color combo. And I adore polka dots! I am an 8 petite so I would not tuck in the shirt…I never tuck in my shirts because it shortens me even more, and who needs that? We don’t need trench coats for the spring where I live, but I love the red. This is a very classy and classic outfit.

  58. Pat
    March 2, 2019 / 3:13 pm

Definitely would wear this look. It is simple and elegant and classic and chic. I love polka dots and red is my accent color. Great silhouette.

  59. Lesley
    March 2, 2019 / 4:06 pm

Oh yes this is me! I possess a similar coat and black trousers. I am retired and live in a country town so an opportunity to “dress up” does not occur too often. However, I could substitute the polka dot blouse (which I do like) with a crisp white shirt and add a black fedora hat and that would be a “going to the city” outfit for me.

  60. Jacqueline bucco
    March 2, 2019 / 4:45 pm

Yes, would def wear it:) love the black and white, with the red coat:)

  61. Kris

I would absolutely wear this. They are not my colors, but the outfit is so classic that I would overlook that and love the outfit.

    Yes, I love this look!

    March 2, 2019 / 6:00 pm

Yes, I love this look! It’s a fun look

  64. March 3, 2019 / 12:07 am

I LOVE this! The red, the polka dots, the silhouette. Perfect.
Seeing lots and lots of red around here, and it’s funny–I see lots of color-coordinated couples, mostly in black, with red accents. I think it’s so cute.

  65. LINDA
    March 3, 2019 / 6:25 am

I think this is too high contrast for my coloring, although I do like the outfit. I actually bought a second hand red trench coat recently, but it’s a softer red, I would definitely wear it with black skinny pants, but I’m not sure about the blouse, I’m more of a tee person, maybe just a black or white tee with an interesting necklace.

  66. Karen H.
    March 3, 2019 / 12:30 pm

Yes, I would wear it! Love the primary colors and the sleek, classic style. The jacket maybe a little more orange red that a true red. I think this selection has been one of the best of the recent Would You Wear It posts.

  67. Jill
    March 3, 2019 / 12:33 pm

Yes! Right up my alley. I am 5’5″ and a classic over 60 apple shape. This is exactly my style. Straight leg or boot cut slacks or dark jeans, classic top (not too long, not clingy, a d a great jacket. Love it!!

  68. Nicki
    March 3, 2019 / 3:40 pm

Love this look. The red coat is my color and a great length for my 5ft frame. The dots suit my personality and the black slim cut pant will make me look taller.

    March 3, 2019 / 4:47 pm

Perfect combo for brunettes. The polka dots are a fun, happy look. It is a total winner.

  70. March 4, 2019 / 10:19 am

I love the entire look and would definitely wear it all. I especially love polka dots and am going to look online for this top as soon as I get done with this comment. Love your blog!!

Absolutely. Love the pop of color and the pokadots, brings the eye up and looks so pulled together. That trench is a must have!
