Would You Wear It: Ruffles and Plaid

Would You Wear It: Ruffles and Plaid

Happy Saturday ladies and welcome to the weekend! Whew, my week felt endless. If you’re part of our private community on Facebook you know we began to chat about it.

As it happens, I created that group incorrectly so I have to create a new one that is connected to my AWSL page. I’ll share a link here when I get it up and running so you can join the community there too! #technologyissues

It’s time for would you wear it with my dear friend Pam. Each week we share a mannequin and ask if you would wear what it’s modeling. Some outfits are awesome and some make you question the merchandiser’s sanity. Here’s what I came across this week.

So tell me, ladies, would you wear this? I love to have you share how you could style these pieces to make them work for your lifestyle and body shape.

Please share your best styling ideas in the comments because we all learn from each other. Be gracious and keep your comments specific to you because we all have different tastes.

Most Popular Item This Week

I thought it would be fun to share what’s trending on AWSL. This Neige-Algue Miniquiers Moderne Shirt was the most popular item on A Well Styled Life last week.mordern striped tee from Tuckernut

A lot of you thought this was a great classic and added it to your wardrobe. You have great taste:)4 casual looks with striped tee

I put together four casual looks using this striped tee. One of them includes the gingham tweed jacket the mannequin is wearing above.

Last week, several of you mentioned you’d find it fun for me to try on what the mannequin is wearing. I agree! I’ll be back tomorrow wearing this look plus my thoughts on if and how I would wear it.

Here are some weekend sales:

Talbots – 25% off your entire purchase. I was in the store getting fitted for the upcoming fashion event! I’ll be “walking the runway” wearing this classic gingham shirt, under this striped sweater, and these wonderful navy pants. The whole look is topped with this amazing trench and this baroque pearl necklace.

I’ll also be wearing this fresh poplin top over these floral pants (which I was surprised to love because I seldom wear prints) and this cool coin charm necklace.

The third outfit is these pull-on jeggings (which I already own), this Randall stripe tee, topped by this white stretch canvas jacket.

I could have easily brought home everything I don’t already own!

Ann Taylor – 40-50% off full-priced tops with the code TOPLOOKS

J.Crew – 29% off your purchase with the code FEB29

Bloomingdales – home sale with 20-60% off

Banana Republic – up to 40% off select including new styles.

Chico’s – Up to 50% off select styles

Now let’s go over to Over 50 Feeling 40 and see what Pam’s mannequin is wearing.

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

I love the blouse and jacket together; very fresh and springlike! I am not sure I can wear yellow at the moment as I am currently rocking the “chocolate lilac” haircolor trend (brown with a purple tone), but on a blonde I think this would be lovely. I would put something different on the bottom though…white pants? Jeans? A white pleated maxi skirt? Any of those would be cute.

I love the blouse, but not in yellow. The blazer has too many pockets and fringe for me. If I’m going to buy a jacket I prefer a more classic style and fabric. The pants are a no as I don’t like cropped anything. I don’t think I would look bad in this outfit but it’s just not me.

Great observation Janet. Even if we’re not sure why, just knowing somethings not right for us is priceless.

I love how you challenge my preconceptions about myself with these “Would You Wear It” examples — always a good thing — but in this case, nope, never & maybe. The blouse: nope. The ruffles are too tailored (I’m OK with big lush ruffles, not this tight, constipated version), the ties are too fussy & I loathe the colours. The jacket: never! Too busy, too plaid, too fitted, too fussy, too formal/structured & again I loathe the colour. The pants: in black, maybe. They appear to fit well & I like the angled pocket & slim leg, but they’re just another cropped pant with nothing to make them stand out. However, I love that striped top! I usually avoid round/crew/boat necklines as they don’t suit me at all — I pretty much always go with a V — but I’d give this one a try. Thanks for a great post!

I love interesting jackets, I wear them like an acessiory. Put on a white tee, blue jeans, any jacket with boots, tennis shoes, flats and away you go. I’d wear the pants and jacket but not the blouse. I would probably add a yellow purse for color and change the blouse for white tee.

      That would look fun

I love the jacket. I’d wear it with a tee and jeans.

Would wear the pants & Jacket with white tee. Like some of the other items you posted!

I’m kind of obsessed with the jacket. I love the color and pattern and think I will give it a shot. Oh, I hope it looks good on me! I’m a long time blazer addict, but always in solid colors. Jennifer, you helped me move out of my comfort zone this year and there are actually patterned jackets in my closet. 🙂 About the blouse, I’m too fidgety and fear I would “play” with the cuffs— love the color though.

Jackets are such game changers in a wardrobe!! I’m glad you’ve discovered their charm.

    February 29, 2020 / 11:18 am

I would wear the pants. I like the jacket except for the double pockets, but I might try it on. The blouse is a no. It is too frilly for my taste.

The jacket is great! Love the color and the gingham print. I also like it paired with the yellow blouse, but the style is a definite no — I don’t like ruffles and it is much to fussy for me. I think the jacket would look fabulous with a yellow tee — or even a white one.

Yes to the navy pants! I’m wearing much more navy these days in place of black. It’s softer and pairs with lots of colors. Plus, it is a wonderful color for spring.

Navy is great for spring. I’m loving it too Beth

    February 29, 2020 / 9:53 am

No for me Jennifer. I do like the pants but not the jacket or blouse. Not my style. The colours are too pastel for me. I would wear a blazer, similar colour to the pants and a cream and navy striped top under the blazer.

    February 29, 2020 / 9:48 am

I love the look and do wear it but with some differences. I have two gingham blazers – one in black and white and one in pink and white. I got both on sale at the end of the season. They are spring summer favorites. I wear both with slim black pants all the time and pair with tanks and tees. I love the blazer in the photo, but green is not a color I wear much. The blouse in the photo is too fussy for me, and yellow is not my best color. I do have a yellow scoop neck tee. I will pair it with black pants and one of my blazers.

Thumbs up on the high rise navy pants. The blouse would be a disaster on me due to a disability. The blazer is cute but too young for me. Love this feature on your Facebook. I started looking forward to it last night.

    Oh no!
But it does look like spring.

  14. Cindy
    February 29, 2020 / 8:18 am

I like the outfit in your inspiration better. Less fussy. I like ruffles and the yellow is fine but the jacket wouldn’t be my choice. I love the jacket with a white shirt and the blue or black pants. A different yellow top, white pants and the jacket might be nice too.

    February 29, 2020 / 8:01 am

As a pear who wears petite tops, I would say no to the jacket because of the length, but I like the color. No to the blouse, because of the polyester fabric, I prefer a breathable fabric. No to the pants, I like the high waist, but I’m starting to wear more wide legs, which I’ve always liked, and are now back. If I could wear this , I would be about 5’7”, and would wear a White, wide leg full length pant, white boots with a square toe, a graphic tee tucked in, a soft pillow bag in contrast color, hoop earrings , and I’m thinking I’d have a lot of red hair! He, he!

I think the jacket is very cute. Paired with the yellow blouse it is too busy. I like the white t shirt with jacket. I would wear it with jeans.

  17. Linda
    February 29, 2020 / 7:40 am

The colors don’t suit me very well and I think this is a style for teens but not for someone my age. So I would not choose to wear it.

    • Jennifer
      February 29, 2020 / 8:11 am

It was not in the teen section.

  18. Dawn
    February 29, 2020 / 7:22 am

No to everything but the pants! Jacket has too much going on and the blouse is a color I don’t wear and is too fussy. The jacket would be great with a white tee or tank, just not for me.

  19. Cyndi
    February 29, 2020 / 7:01 am

As with many here, the blouse is a no for me, both in color and style. I’m not a ruffle or yellow person. The jacket styled with a white T would be a better look for me, it’s very cute when you styled it, I can’t wait to see it on. That striped T is very cute, I love them and have several – thank for the styling ideas.

I’m adding more striped tees this spring. They’re so classic

Would wear it apart from the ruffles at sleeves. They get in the way of almost everything. But love wearing jackets so versitile.

Jackets are magical pieces in a wardrobe.

  21. Rose

Love the jacket and pants paired with maybe a white shirt or tank. I would wear the blouse with something else.

  22. Susan McClelland
    February 29, 2020 / 6:35 am

I like the pants but would pass on the jacket and blouse. Not good colours on me and too fussy. I would rather wear a statement necklace with simple jacket/blouse than a dressy blouse/jacket. Personal taste.

  23. Linda lennon
    February 29, 2020 / 6:32 am

A bit too frilly for me especially the blouse. The jacket has too much going on for my taste; the pattern, fringe, etc. I have a closet full of jackets but usually only wear them for church. This SoCal retirement lifestyle is so very casual.

    February 29, 2020 / 6:20 am

Sorry Jennifer but two-thumbs down on all three, namely and hopefully not sounding too harsh and definitely not to offend anyone BUT for their price tags the fabrics (pattern ‘n color particularly for the jacket and blouse) IMO just don’t do the styles any favour. Brenda-

  25. Linda GR
    February 29, 2020 / 6:10 am

I like the outfit, but would probably not purchase the jacket. I’d purchase the pants in a misses so they would be longer. I like the blouse, but it’s been a very long time since I wore fluffy cuffs. I’m not sure if I could deal with them getting into, or caught on, things. The color palette is pleasing to me.

  26. Pamela M Lutrell
    February 29, 2020 / 6:09 am

I think I would try on the jacket to see what it looks like on me. But the blouse is a no…not my personal style. The more I think about the jacket, I think the pattern might make me look larger…just depends on the design….

  27. Linda P
    February 29, 2020 / 6:08 am

I wouldn’t wear the blouse because it is the wrong color and just too fussy. While I like the jacket, I’m not sure that color would work for me. I like the pants, but I probably wouldn’t tuck in a top. For the right person, this is a very springy look.

    February 29, 2020 / 5:57 am

I think the jacket is adorable and I would wear it easily with the pants. I am not a ruffle girl so I would have to pass on the blouse. The color of the gingham jacket is great. Looks like spring!

Yellow flowers in my dining room look amazing but a yellow blouse on me is a big “no”. The jacket has a lot of small detail and when you paired it with the white t shirt and jeans, it helped balance out the overall look. It’s not a look for me but I can see someone else rocking the jacket!
    Happy Saturday!

I would wear the pants and blouse but not the jacket. Don’t care for the fringe or the number of pockets on the sides on top of the check. Too fussy.

Jennifer, I always live your posts! So funny, I just bought that gingham check jacket yesterday, it is adorable. I really liked how you styled it! I do not
like how it is styled on the mannequin.

  34. Michele
    February 29, 2020 / 5:06 am

It’s amazing how different the jacket looks when shown in your outfit inspirations. On the mannequin it was a quick “no”. In your display with a simple white tee I am thinking it would be a cute Spring jacket. I love tweed and this jacket is an interesting twist. So apparently the yellow frilly blouse is the negative aspect of the mannequin’s outfit. I could see wearing this jacket and white tee with multiple types and colors of pants.

  35. Susan K Wilson
    February 29, 2020 / 4:54 am

    Not my style

  36. Cindy
    February 29, 2020 / 4:40 am

Yellow is a terrible color on me and I don’t like the fussy feeling with the tie neck & ruffled sleeve. I think the style of the jacket is cute but I’d prefer it in a soft blue. If the jacket is boxy, I’d pass but if it’s more fitted, then I’d give it a try.

  37. Mary
    February 29, 2020 / 4:31 am

The colors don’t work for me at all. I don’t like anything about the jacket. I like small print gingham on little kids not me. The color and the sleeves of the blouse are not for me. The pants would be fine with a longer top.

  38. Linda R Gaertner
    February 29, 2020 / 4:18 am

I would wear the pants and the jacket. I like the color of the jacket and the fringe. The blouse is too frilly for me and yellow is not a good color for me.

  39. Janice
    February 29, 2020 / 4:17 am

The jacket is cute but with the plain white tank and black jeans, not that yellow shirt.

  40. Shari
    February 29, 2020 / 4:17 am

I will not wear ruffles…never again period! These fluffy selves will pass on soon…I pray!
Rest of the outfit? Cute! And adaptable!

    Good morning Jennufer,
This outfit would be great, but don’t like the sleeve ruffle at all. It’s just not me. Otherwise I like the color combinations, though I rarely wear yellow. Thus shade of lemon, with the offsetting teal and white jacket seems appealing to me. Easy. Very springlike.

    • Jennifer

It looks spring like to me too

  42. Terry

      It looks fresh to me

  43. Lori Stewart
    February 29, 2020 / 4:11 am

I would wear the pants and the jacket but would have to take a pass on the blouse. The yellow does nothing for my skin town. I am not even sure I would wear it in another color, I am not fond of the strings tying the neck together, or even the larger pussy bow style either. The fabric looks to be a little flimsy, maybe that’s not the proper word but it doesn’t seem to hold its shape well and looks rumpled underneath the jacket The color of the jacket is an interesting green, I would have to try it on and see how it looks against my skin tone.

  44. Anon
    February 29, 2020 / 4:10 am

No, not my style. Too fussy, but I like the green.
