New Brand to Try: Tuckernuck

While I have a list of tried and true retailers that I love shopping with, it is a breath of fresh air to find a new to me brand to try and share. After several AWSL readers recommended Tuckernuck, I decided to take a look at their offerings to see what all of the fuss was about, and I was pleasantly surprised at my findings.

What is Tuckernuck?

If you frequently shop at Tuckernuck, you can just skip this part and head down to check out my favorite items. If you’re like me and you’re new to this brand, let me tell you a little about them.

Tuckernuck is a popular American clothing and lifestyle brand known for its classic and preppy designs. The brand was founded in 2012 by Jocelyn Gailliot, Madeline Grayson, and September Rinnier, who were inspired by the lifestyle of the East Coast and the nautical charm of Nantucket Island. Tuckernuck has created a reputation for its curated selection of apparel, accessories, and home goods that embody a timeless and sophisticated aesthetic. The brand has gained a following among individuals who appreciate classic, preppy, and timeless fashion, often associated with the coastal and New England aesthetic.

This brand appears to be size inclusive as the majority of its clothing is available in sizes XXS-XXXL. I do not see the option for petite or tall sizing, so that’s something to consider if you require those sizes. I would venture to say their prices are comparable to J. McLaughlin or Anthropologie, with most dresses falling in the $150 to $300 range.

As much as I would love to do a Tuckernuck dressing room diary, their only brick-and-mortar location is in Washington, D.C. If anyone has ever visited their store, let me know in the comments below. Now, let’s look at what pieces I found on their website.

Tuckernuck Dresses

Mabel Maxi Dress

This neutral-tiered maxi dress will be a versatile choice year-round. Elevate its neutral yet captivating charm with heels and your trusty tote, or embrace a more casual vibe by pairing it with timeless white sneakers.

Sleeveless Charlie Dress

This simple yet sophisticated sleeveless dress looks great as is in the summer or under a jacket or cardigan as we transition into fall. It’s also available in three other classic colors: white, navy, and red.

Callahan Shirt Dress

The brand calls this a “throw on and go” style dress, and I tend to agree. These are the kinds of garments that make getting dressed in the summer a breeze. Pair it with a sandal, a sunhat, and your favorite sunglasses for an effortless daytime look.

Navy Tweed Jackie Dress

The tweed shell mixed with the braided trim makes for a very interesting but beautiful combination of textures. The high neck, faux pockets, and gold buttons give this classic and timeless dress a vintage vibe that goes perfectly with its name: the Jackie.

Antelope Royal Shirt Dress

If you’re going to do an animal print, this subtle tan antelope print is the way to do it. However, if you aren’t a fan of animal prints, this dress is also available in several other great prints and solids.

Tuckernuck Tops & Sweaters

Ashlen Blouse

I’ve been researching fall trends, and I have been seeing a lot about peplum tops. This Ashlen blouse is a great upgrade to your basic button-down top. I love the extra touch that the covered buttons add.

Finley Flutter Sleeve

A great black top like this flutter sleeve blouse can be the foundation for many outfits as you can pair it with jeans, shorts, white pants, trousers, etc. Flutter sleeves like this are a great way to balance out a silhouette with wider hips by adding a little bulk to the shoulder area.

Adair Boyfriend Shirt

I don’t think one can have too many quality button-downs in their closet because they enable you to create an endless amount of looks. This one bodes a three-quarter sleeve length and a relaxed fit.

Majolica Tile Willow Blouse

I am very cautious about choosing prints that overwhelm my frame, but I am loving the beautiful tile-inspired print on this half-button-down blouse. It comes in a few other colors, but I certainly wasn’t expecting to see the bold yellow with feather trim on the sleeves!

Colette Cardigan

This cozy and chunky cropped cardigan will be a great transitional fall layer as we move from summer into fall over the coming weeks and months. You can wear it buttoned as shown or open over a dress or blouse.

I love the Antelope dress but was really interested in looking at the lengths of some of the tops. They are loose at the bottom but also hip or high hip length. This is what I am looking for to wear with wider leg pants. Wide legs and oversized longer tops create a baggy frumpy look of much too much fabric. But my shape does not allow tucking, so shorter loose tops will hopefully be compatible. Thanks for the ideas.

    1. Shorter tops are definitely better with wider leg pants.

  2. Always nice to learn about new brands. Think Iā€™ll pass on these offerings, but will check at a later date.

And a +1 on AYR. Limited but good style and quality. The fact that they frequently feature a 60+ model also appeals to me.

    1. Agreed! I love to see us represented by brands.

  3. I have a Charlie and the antelope shirt dress (it has very subtle gorgeous sheen, a lovely print – and I donā€™t usually like animal prints!).

The brand runs a bit large (Iā€™m a size 6 and wear an xs) and at 5ā€™2ā€ the length is a perfect just above the knee length. Iā€™m not sure someone taller would be happy unless they liked their dresses on the short side.

    1. Thank you for letting us know Jan.

I agree with the pricey part, but truth be told – I have never paid full price for anything that I have purchased because there is always some coupon that will work!! Just saying!! And their customer service is extraordinary and shipping is free both ways!!

    1. Great to know, thanks for sharing the shipping.

  5. I have been eyeing that Jackie dress since last spring, and now I have an occasion in October to wear it! Thank you for highlighting it! I have been shopping today, kinda coming up empty otherwise. I thought about green, but I’m getting the navy. I’m petite, and according to the information on the website compared to my own measurements, it ought to hit just above the knee for me. I’m so excited to try it! And the black cardigan is also in my bag. Such a black sweater is on my purchase list for fall. Tuckernuck clothing is pricey – above my usual price point. I sat and stared so long at my Tuckernuck cart that they offered me a discount. LOL, I took it! And I’m going to love these pieces. I hope they fit well! Thanks for highlighting this company today. It was very helpful!

    1. That’s amazing about the discount! I need to try that mnore often, Pam.

  6. You say they are preppy-leaning, but many of these would fit in just fine with my boho style. The first dress is gorgeous. It’s “restrained boho” in that it’s neutral, but the tiers make it perfect for dolling it up with some bold boho jewelry.

    1. That’s awesome Kay. I love brands that spread across all tastes and sizes.

  7. Thanks for introducing a new clothing company. Like many have mentioned, the Tuckernuck dresses shown here are too short for my preference, especially if items are even shorter in the XS sizes. Despite that, I’m happy to learn about new sources of clothing, especially since the quality and sizing seems so inconsistent at some of my old stand-bys such as Talbots and J Jill.

  8. Lynette J says:

Beautiful pieces, thanks for sharing, will watch for similar locally at a lower price point

  9. Francesca B says:

I love Tuckernuck and it is now one of my favorite places to shop. I wish they had petites though as the midi dresses swamp me and as everyone has mentioned, the short dresses are too short for me being 59 and 5ā€2. I ended up giving them away to my daughter. I bought the cable cardigan in black last year and itā€™s fabulous and l love their earrings and their blouses. That blue linen shirt you posted Jennifer is also a winner. Accessories are also really good. I think the patterns are so unique! Happy week!

    1. Have a great one, Francesca. Thanks for sharing about the accessories. I love unique items.

  10. Elizabeth L says:

As others have commented, the dresses are just way too short for those of us, ahem, of a certain age. Plus Iā€™ve learned that as a petite, opting for missesā€™ sizes never works- especially through the shoulders. Good to know of new resources, though! Thanks for bringing to our attention.

  11. These dresses look extremely short.
Also if you carry your weight in your belly these styles will not look good at all.

I think Iā€™ll pass on this brand.

  12. Would buy several of their dress styles if they werenā€™t quite so short. Iā€™m tall, and 74. The knees are not the most lovely feature! I wouldnā€™t mind above knee, but inches above is just too short for me. How I wish they had tall sizing. Thr ones I love are not midi styles. Oh well..

  13. I love their styles and really want to order-but the price. OUCH. Just so expensive. I am packing for a Tulum 7 day vacation where these wold be perfect-exxcept I cannot afford the $. I hope to perhaps get one special dress someday. But for an entire vacation wardrobe-too much. I would like to know more about the fit, quality and how you feel in some of the clothes. thanks for sharing.

  14. Iā€™ve tried several times to buy a few of their dresses. They are unique and high quality. However, they are SHORT! And Iā€™m only 5ā€™4ā€. At 65, I just donā€™t feel comfortable in anything less than a 36ā€ length. Their sizes small and medium are shorter than that. Otherwise, their clothes are gorgeous.

  15. Teresa Landers says:

Generally looks like quality, wearable basics; however, as someone 5ā€™ 7ā€ and 66 years old, those dresses look awfully short. Maybe the models are just exceptionally tall???

  16. Thank you for introducing me to a new (for me) company. I love the shirts and the maxi dress which is available in great colors and would transition into fall – which is a long way off for us in the southeast. I wish, however, that their short dresses weren’t quite so short. Perhaps they have some longer dresses, too? It’s impossible for me to think about fall clothing when it’s still so hot, but I look forward to cooler weather and autumn colors,

  17. Love the look of these fashions. Unfortunately for me they do not have petites.

  18. suzanstew says:

Somehow they show up on my FB feed and your article is the first I’ve seen that delves deeper into their clothes. I am getting accustomed to the tiered maxi dresses although I will never wear one. Tuckernuck seems to have a little too much of that look, but I suspect that is because that seems to be the style rather than that they are a muu muu proprietor.

I am glad you have featured J McLaughlin as I first found a store a few years ago and always consider them to be my “reach” clothes store. When you are accustomed to buying Talbots and Chicos taking full advantage of the discount periods, it is kinda hard to suck it up and purchase this full price stuff, I am just saying…

    1. I hear you Susan. Some brands seem to be training us to wait for a sale so if we do pay full price, we feel like a chump a week later when itā€™s in sale!

  19. These are all very cute styles. However, the most of the dresses are really too short for someone my age. However, since they donā€™t have petites, maybe the lengths would work anyway.

  20. Love the styles from this company. Wish they had petite sizes. At 5ā€™1ā€, L-XL, I zero in on fashions for older women. Some of the short dresses might fit into my lifestyle. They would be longer on me which suits my shorter stature. Nice to see some new names in the fashion industry.

    1. I agree. Iā€™m in the mood to branch out and try new-to-me brands.

  21. Nice to see some alternative to other clothing brands we are more familiar with. Makes me want to have the legs to wear these shorter dresses.
Fall clothes I am looking for would be casual, comfortable, and adaptable for winter.

  22. Hi Jennifer
I’ve known about this brand for quite some time now.
I have never been able to bring myself to buy there. I find the prices are more than I am will to budget for clothing. Some sale items maybe. But I also see too many tiered dresses, ruffles and patterns that are just not my style. They look lovely on the models but many reviews say dresses run large. And I’m a petite anyway. Thanks for sharing.

  23. Jo McGuire says:

I have discovered AYR. A small company owned by women. The fabrics are beautiful and excellent quality. The designs are perfect. My experience with customer service has been excellent as well. Love your thoughtful blog! Thank you!

    1. I have an AYR shirt and agree, the quality is fabulous!!

  24. Oh I do like the Charlie, Callahan, and Antelopee dresses! And the linen shirt in blue! I’ve never shopped there but they remind me of the styles found at McLaughlin stores?

    1. Yes, they remind me of them too. Nice looking quality.

  25. I am waiting for my first order. Unfortunately itā€™s starts out shipping DHL then transferred to USPS.

  26. This is one of my favorite things about your blog, I would never have found Tuckernuck on my own and they appear to have interesting pieces. As someone about your age I prefer clothes that have interesting details rather than things you see everyone in. Just wondering Jennifer if you own any of their pieces and if their fit works for a more mature body? Living 150 miles from a large metro area makes me really appreciate all your.research!

    1. I have not but Iā€™m very intrigued to check them out.
