5 Ways to Style a Matching Linen Set to Expand Your Wardrobe

Talbots sponsors this post. A big thank you to my readers for supporting the brands that work with AWSL.

There’s no denying that a matching linen set is a great wardrobe staple for warm weather. The fabric is breathable on even the hottest days, and it has an effortlessly chic vibe. Wearing a coordinated set makes you look instantly pulled together, even on those “I don’t know what to wear!” mornings. The real magic happens when you mix and match your pieces to add diversity to your look and help you get more wear out of your wardrobe. Let’s explore 5 ways you can style a matching linen set to expand your wardrobe.

Talbots has a great selection of matching sets this season, and since their Spring Style Event is on from now through March 11, you can save 25% off your entire purchase! And if you haven’t already joined their Classic Rewards Program, now’s the time because it allows you to earn style points to redeem for future purchases.

Linen Blazer and Pants with Cotton Tee

Case in point… this stretch linen blazer and pants. It may look like a suit because they match perfectly, but the blazer and pants are sold separately. This is a huge plus since few of us wear the same size on top as the bottom. I often need a petite on the bottom but not always on the top. Luckily, Talbots is a size-inclusive brand offering the same item in misses (regular length), petite, plus, and plus petite. Buying each piece individually allows you to get a more customized fit.

I love the polished look of these pieces together, but my casual lifestyle calls for more laid-back outfits, so let’s look at a few ways you can mix and match these items to level up your spring style.

1- Linen Blazer With Chinos And Cotton Tee

Dressing the linen blazer down with a simple cotton tee and straight-leg chinos gives a polished, sporty look that will work for many occasions. I love the blend of pale neutrals in casual fabrics, which have an elevated feel. The cropped blazer has a cut-away front with double-breasted buttons to close or not. The fabric is a linen blend with spandex, so it stretches comfortably. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want in a casual outfit is to feel confined, so I always look for stretch.

I added a jaunty bucket hat to keep the sun out of my eyes and add some “attitude” to the look. The sales lady at Talbots showed me that this hat has an internal strap, which allows you to adjust the fit of the hat, which is brilliant!

The straight-leg chinos are labeled “perfect” for a reason…they are. The fabric is crisp yet soft cotton with 2% spandex for comfort. They’re a timeless silhouette with an ankle length that goes with everything. I bought this twine color, plus they also come in white, indigo or black. The curvy fit is here. And for you taller ladies, Talbots also makes these in Long, with a 33 1/2″ inseam.

2- Linen Pants with White Tee and Denim Jacket

CLASSIC JEAN JACKET size MP

Pairing linen pants with a cotton tee and a classic jean jacket is a fresh combination that feels right for my suburban lifestyle. The jean jacket’s rugged texture contrasts beautifully with the light, airy linen, creating visual depth and striking a balance between casual and polished. Talbots carries jean jackets in lots of colors and washes this season. Mine is from last year, but it looks very similar to this Isla wash.

There’s nothing quite as useful as a fresh white cotton tee for the spring and summer. Lotions, sunscreen, and perspiration all conspire to leave last year’s tee looking less than pristine, so I like to refresh mine with the season. This one is 100% Pima cotton and will be a workhorse in your wardrobe all year round. It also comes in indigo blue or black.

3- Linen Pants and Denim Shirt

My love of a great denim shirt runs deep. Pairing linen pants with this button-front denim shirt and white tennies creates an easy-to-wear outfit that’s cool and relaxed with a very casual vibe. You could also layer the linen jacket over this shirt and swap the sneakers for these woven loafers for a more elevated look. If you want to make your torso look longer, add this slim indigo belt, and if you want your legs to appear longer, try this tan leather belt.

4- Linen Pants with Floral Cardigan

Dressing linen pants down with white tennies and a colorful cotton cardigan balances casual elegance with a feminine touch. The relaxed shape of these linen pants is a nice contrast to this more fitted floral cardigan. I have it buttoned closed like a pullover, but you could also wear it unbuttoned over a tee, tank, or blouse for more versatile layering.

This Watercolor Charming Cardigan is in shades of pink, red, and soft beige on an ivory background. The leaves and stems pick up the cafe color of the pants and jacket and tie the look together. If you need another layer on top, you could, of course, add the linen blazer.

5- Linen Blazer with Flare Jeans

FLARE LEG PULL-ON TRAVEL JEANS size S

The addition of a linen blazer instantly elevates these pull-on flare jeans…which are amazingly comfy. I added the floral cardigan because it’s the perfect length to cover the wide stretch waistband and gives it a polished look. The shorter blazer length and cut-away front are perfect for the fuller leg of the flare jeans. I wore nude sandals, but you could also add loafers or sneakers to dress this look down even more.

This shorter linen blazer would easily layer over a summer tee dress or look terrific with a pair of these chino shorts with some suede espadrilles or the new trending woven flats.

Talbots is a best seller with AWSL readers for good reason! For over 75 years, they’ve been providing timeless, modern, classic fashion that women of all ages and sizes can rely on to support all their wardrobe needs.

  1. Did you have the Pull-on Travel jeans hemmed?

    1. Yes, I bought the regular and turned the hem up on full hem. I wanted the highest rise because I have a long torso

  2. Great pairings/ideas! I love the linen pants with the denim shirt, and the sweater with the linen pants. So beautiful! Love your “jaunty hat” too. So fun, and you look great in it. Will have to check out Talbot’s, which I haven’t done yet for the spring.

  3. Jennifer I love your insights but not sure what c/o means in your clothing description?

    1. c/o means the brand has sent me those specific items.

  4. That linen suit looks lovely on you. So smart!

  5. I don’t think I’m ready for matchy-matchy again. I’ll wait to see how this trend plays out.

    1. Matching sets isn’t really a trend. It’s a way of dressing.

  6. The thing I always worry about with matching sets worn separately is unequal fading due to more washing of one item vs the other, thereby making my set look “off”. Just me?

    1. You have to always wash them together to keep the color uniform.

  7. Great post, thanks. I got rid of all my suits when I retired, but I’ve kept some nice separates that could be combined to look more suit-y if needed. Thanks for the ideas. BTW, I am just under 5′ 3″ with regular proportions, and at 29″ long, the linen trousers will not work with anything but heels. Talbots has some beautiful flats that I’m considering, so the trousers are a definite no for me.

  8. I absolutely love the look of the linen suit, but I can’t buy a summer blazer (or dress) lined in polyester. One of the things I love about Talbots it’s that they often have lightweight summer dresses lined in cotton. I wish they would offer that in blazers too! I have found really amazing prices at Talbots since I was in my 20s and looking for clothes that nobody else I knew would be wearing. I still have the most beautiful fitted black lace cocktail dress that I bought in the late 90s to wear for my 25th birthday party! Anyway, back to this post, the linen suit looks fabulous on you and I can imagine wearing that outfit so many places.

  9. Terry Dupree says:

I LOVE the Charming Cardis – add at least one a season – great post!

  10. Jennifer,
The linen set looks very polished on you. I appreciate your comment about paring the wardrobe down. I like a lot of choices but then so much goes unworn. It is more calming (read less anxiety producing) to have a smaller wardrobe. More discipline is needed on my part.

  11. I’m doing exactly this with a pants suit for a trip next week. I wish linen blazers didn’t have to be dry cleaned. That’s a deal breaker for me. I have a few I get away with “dreyeling” but it’s hard to get them crisp.

    1. That is an issue with dry cleaning for sure. I just always make sure to clean them together so they don’t fade differently.

  12. Dianna Kahler says:

Loved the lesson of putty and paint! Thanks for sharing. Quick, easy and beautiful results!
