Casual Outfits For A Tropical Getaway

Happy Wednesday, ladies. As the weather warms up, many of us are starting to plan vacations. I’m getting super excited about my upcoming trip to visit my brother in Mexico. It’s been far too long since I’ve hugged him. Here are a few casual outfits for my tropical getaway.

This post is sponsored by Nordstrom and ShopStyle Collective. Since Nordstrom is my favorite department store, I am always honored to work with them.

I’ve had this hat in the classic beige straw and black ribbon for years and reach for it more than any other hat I own so when I spotted this color, I had to have it. The vanilla-colored one spoke to me of soft colors and going with everything in my wardrobe. It also comes in a gorgeous lilac. You can, and I have, spent a small fortune on a great hat, but this Brixton Joanna is a stylish, sturdy hat at a fabulous price.

My recent struggles to make my old caftan look flattering came to an end when I tried on this one. Its gauzy cotton fabric will be just as cool as my other one but the shape is more slimming. Everything I wear needn’t be slimming, but it helps if it doesn’t make me look much larger than I am.

This one comes in 8 colors in sizes XS-XXL. I’m wearing a small so it runs TTS. This is selling out very fast so I hope they restock because I want the white. Here’s the same style in what appears to be crisp cotton which would be nice for a dressier option.

No warm-weather vacation outfit would be complete without a tote bag. I chose this woven leather tote because it works at home and on holiday. The weaving makes it extremely lightweight plus it has a long shoulder strap to wear it cross-body if my arms are full on the way to the beach or pool.

This outfit is also going with me and it will probably be the first thing I change into when we arrive. Let’s start with this always useful, lightweight cardigan sweater. I started buying these Nic+Zoe little cardi’s several years ago and find them one of the most versatile pieces in my warm-weather wardrobes. It can be worn 4 ways but my preferred is simply tied in front. It gives great arm coverage for chilly A/C and covers your shoulders from too much sun. It comes in regular and petite, 2P-XXL. I opted for the misses medium which fits perfectly. You can find more colors here.

A cute pair of pool shoes are mandatory for a tropical vacation. These ones caught my eye because they have a colorful fabric upper which I find easier on my foot than rubber. The colors are really fun and they also come in a navy/beige combo.

I’m also bringing these classic linen pants, in fact, I may toss sneakers on and travel in this exact outfit. I have these pants in several colors from last year and find them invaluable in hot weather. They come in sizes XXS-16W and run large so I bought the XS.

This tank is a cheery print that looks like tropical leaves and is a perfect match for my cardi. It comes in regular and small, XS-16W. I am wearing a regular small so it runs true to size.

Nordstrom is my favorite department store for so many reasons, not the least of which is their amazing customer service with free shipping and returns along with curbside pickup and free basic alterations.

TheirĀ Nordy ClubĀ (free to join) allows you to earn points towards Nordstrom notes you can spend on future purchases. I like to save my notes up until I have enough to treat myself to something special. Something I wouldnā€™t ordinarily buy for myself so it almost feels like a gift!

Are you planning any getaways this spring or summer?

Thanks for reading and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. As you know we will be travelling to Hawaii for a wedding next month so I really appreciate your suggestions! I am not a caftan fan but that blue one is so flattering. I need to check it out.

  2. All great looks. I just got back from a tropical vacation yesterday. I feel pretentious in hats. That said. it was very windy and my hair was getting in my face. a hat might have helped – or blown off, I guess. I packed a new to me capsule of tropical brights. Fun change, not sure I would pack them again though. My tennis shoes and hoodie were both fails. Both looked frumpy, IMO. Still searching for stylish, serious walking shoes.

    1. Tennis shoes are always a challenge for me when trying to look stylish.

  3. These are great looks on you and look perfect for your upcoming trip! I am going to Cape Cod for a week in July – it is my happy place. Before COVID, I went every year and this will be my first trip since 2019. I have a list of what I bring – and it includes many similar items to your list. I always pack a maxi dress and my white denim jacket along with linen pants and chinos plus tees and light sweaters. Sneakers, cute sandals, and flip flops for the beach along with swimsuit and cover up and hats. It will be so nice to travel again. Safe travels to you and your husband and have a great time!

  4. Love your outfits. Especial the dress and sweater outfit.
    You look adorable. šŸ˜Š

Have you washed your linen pants? Any shrinkage? Looking at them and don’t know whether to size up to allow for shrinkage.

    1. I havenā€™t yet, but I usually size up for shrinkage because I always put linen in a hot dryer. I find it helps with wrinkles.

  6. I love my Nic Zoe cardigans as well and Iā€™m not slim but they look good. Cute outfits!

  7. Love love love all three outfits! They all look cheerful and sophisticated. Bravo!
Now, let’s hope they aren’t all sold out before the weather here gets warm enough to wear them. Have fun on your vacation.

  8. That sweater looks wonderful on you! Great color. Both with the dress, and with the tank which looks great with the black combo.

  9. Wish we were planning a getaway, it’s sounds so nice. I love all your outfits! Have a wonderful trip.

  10. Hi, Jennifer. What a fun post! That pink sweater outfit is the winner of the day, in my opinion. You look lovely in all of the outfits, though. Enjoy your vacation!

P.S. I have found similar cardigans at jjill, if anyone is interested in buying at a lower price. jjill often has those cardigans on sale.

    1. Yes, I love those too!

  13. Happy Friday Jennifer – or Wednesday as it were šŸ™‚ The blue caftan is very flattering on you and a good reminder that caftans don’t have to be voluminous.

    1. Lol, I am rushing the week. I guess I’m really in need of a vacation šŸ™‚ I was thrilled to find this narrower caftan

  14. Paulette Levy says:

I love your new hat! Unfortunately I invested in a couple if expensive hats (similar) from my dermatologists inventory of SPF beach wear. You look so cute in your caftan and I especially love the knotted vibrant pink sweater over the sherbet colors striped sun dress! Wow!
Very nice! Have fun in Mexico!

    1. Thanks, Paulette! It sounds like you’re being very smart with your skin health. Hats save me from heatstroke also, which I am prone to if I get too much of it on the top of my head.
