Dressing Room Diaries- Talbots January 2024 New Arrivals Try-On
The mall is always a crowded zoo after the holidays. Since I was there to exchange some shoes, along with everyone else within 100 miles, I decided to pop in and see the Talbots January 2024 new arrivals and do a try-on for you.
If youāre new here, welcome. Dressing room diaries are when I go into a local store for a try-on session so you can see whatās new and how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5ā4ā³ and weigh around 145 lbs. I have broad shoulders, straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top.
Youāll see me try on clothes in colors and shapes that may not flatter me and are not my personal style because I want you to see whatās in the stores and get some styling ideas. I mention what size Iām wearing to help you understand how things run. Most Talbots garments are available in misses, petite, plus, and plus petite.
This fun-tipped cardigan comes in this blue or bright citrus yellow and resembles the “lady jackets” that have been so popular in 2023. Its high hip length would make it great with wide-leg pants or over a skirt. The knit is substantial, so it feels more like a little jacket than a floppy cardigan. I’m wearing it with these straight leg jeans in a paler, Carolina wash. A lighter wash in denim is a nice change for spring…which isn’t right around the corner, but retailers would have you think it is. Their inseam is full length, as opposed to ankle, which I appreciate since I’m on the cusp of petite sizing. They’ll cover the top of your booties.
This super soft and cuddly striped Johnny collar pullover also comes in vibrant pink or black stripes. It’s a heavier weight than a regular tee and feels more like a sweatshirt but with more style. The polo collar is a nice detail, so you can feel sort of one and done in this without feeling the need for a necklace. It’s a relaxed shape and incredibly cozy.
I had a heck of a time finding this cabled cardi on the website because they call it a coatigan. It’s a wonderful mid-weight with silver toggles and gorgeous cables. I love the wide-spread collar, and the length is perfect. I’m wearing it over this ribbed mock-neck tee that has elbow-length sleeves and buttons along the top of one shoulder. It comes in three color versions and fits close to the body. I would size up if you plan to wear it on its own and prefer a looser fit. This will be fab when the weather warms up and all through the summer.
These slim ankle jeans are in a natural color that is fairly neutral and doesn’t appear overly warm. They’re a nice break from blue jeans and an easier color to wear than white jeans in the winter. The fabric is sturdy cotton, which is totally opaque with 1% spandex. The inseam is more typical for ankle jeans at misses: 29″; misses long 31″; petite: 26 1/2″; plus: 29″; plus petite: 26 1/2″.
I wore these everyday stretch pants into the store. I love how comfy they are and wear them often because they retain their shape. They come in black and deep indigo, which I’m wearing. I’m styling them with this cozy half-zip pullover in ombre stripes of blue with crisp white. It has a boxy shape and easy fit, plus the fabric provides UPF 50+ sun protection.
JOHNNY COLLAR CARDIGAN size MP
This striped pink sweater is so soft I assumed it was cashmere. It’s actually a machine-washable blend of 55% Cotton, 25% Lenzing ā¢ Ecovero ā¢ Viscose, 15% Nylon, and 5% Merino Wool. It also comes in an indigo or aqua stripe and raglan sleeves. Interestingly, the stripes do not continue across the top of the sleeves, which is helpful for those of us with broad shoulders.
I’ve styled it with this button-front johnny collar cardigan in deep indigo blue. It has a slightly puffed sleeve at the cuff, which is a nice feminine touch. The body is straight without shaping, and the fabric is cuddly and soft.
**A word about Talbots’ indigo- I find it almost impossible to tell the difference between their indigo and black, so please be aware that this is not navy blue.
This water resistant jacket is fabulous. It’s lined yet lightweight and has a bungee cord to snug up the hood. It also has pockets everywhere and knit cuffs to keep the wind out. The hood zips neatly into the back of the collar when you don’t need it. The color is stunning and would brighten any damp day. The jacket also dips longer in the back to keep your backside dry when you sit down.
I’m wearing it over these stretch, seamed bootcut pants that simply pull on. These are so comfy you could wear them to yoga and then dress them up for a casual day. They also come in ivory and have 22% spandex, so they’ll never bag out. The terry crewneck is cozy and warm with ribbed trim at the cuffs and hem.
Here’s the same print in everyday leggings, topped with a cozy featherweight terry zip-front jacket. Too much pattern in one outfit? I’d call this a cardigan rather than a jacket because it’s not heavy and you could easily wear it inside. This is indigo blue, and it also comes in a lighter blue twilight.
PINTUCK FLARE JEANS size 8P / CABLEKNIT MOCKNECK SWEATER size LP
This blue is one of my favorites and is hard to resist. The striped tunic shirt has a shirttail hemline with several buttons along the side seam at the bottom. It’s in a crisp 100% cotton fabric that also comes in an aqua or citron lime stripe. I topped it with this coordinating cropped shaker stitch vest, which is also available in aqua but not lime. I love the look of this cropped vest over the longer shirt because it gives a nod to your waist without tucking anything in.
On the right, I’m wearing this cableknit sweater in the same capri blue. This pullover is a soft cotton/nylon blend that comes in five colors. With both looks, I’m wearing Talbots’ new pintuck flare jeans. They have a nice high waist and 1% spandex with inseams of misses: 31 1/2″; petite: 29″; plus: 31 1/2″; and plus petite: 29″.
Here’s the tipped cardigan in citrus, worn over the matching crewneck sweater shell. This shell is a great little layering piece that comes in four colors. The length is handy because it covers your waistband, but it’s short enough that you don’t have to tuck it in. This little “twinset” could be dressed up or down and is perfect for spring right through the summer.
I’m styling it with their slim ankle jeans in never-fade black. This style has been a customer favorite at Talbots for years. They’re a great classic slim leg in stretch denim that has an invisible slimming panel to smooth your tummy. I have these and can attest to the fact that they do not fade.
This crewneck sweater has a large paisley pattern that contains little bits of many colors so it will coordinate lots of things in your wardrobe. It’s a cotton/Tencel blend that also hits at the hip.
Here’s the same paisley sweater under their new tailored stretch double-breasted blazer. I’m a big fan of their stretch blazers for comfort and ease of packing. It also comes in indigo…but this blue is amazing!

Great finds and you look great in yellow…and blue. I love T by Talbots and agree with another post…sometimes Large is good, sometime XL….I am petite and sometimes I end up with the regular. Just goes to show you always need to try everything on !

Happy 2024. Here is a hint to distinguish Talbots indigo from black in the store. The tag will have a color code: 72 , 74,76 is black. ; 06 is indigo or navy. ( I am a Talbots associate)

Pamela, thank you for the black/indigo codes. I have both in corduroy pants and cannot tell the colors until I put them in sunlight. LOL
The stiped half zip looks much better on you than on their website. I live in these T tops, but lately the sizing hasn’t been consistent. Sometimes the PXL is perfect, sometimes it’s huge. Especially sleeves, which can be much too wide. That’s the problem with buying online. I do love their indigo and black stretch pants and have a bunch of them.

Thanks for another dressing room try on. Its so useful to see the clothing on a regular woman rather than a model. Too many times the stylists manipulate the garments or pose the models in a way that makes the image in the catalog and website is misleading. While I like Talbots approach to style and appreciate their full range of petite sizing I rarely find anything in my “autumn” colors. The toggle sweater really caught my eye and I will call later this morning to see if my local store has received it. Also the johnny collar shirt also comes in solid colors and the coral looks like it might work for me. Happy New Year.
