Dressing Room Diaries- Talbots

Happy Friday ladies. I popped into my local Talbots earlier in the week and tried on a few things. Since their 30% off sale is on, the place was mobbed so I actually made a second stop there yesterday, which was not as good a hair day for me:).

If you’re new here, welcome. Dressing room diary is when I go into a store for a try-on session so you can see how some of the new merchandise looks on a woman over 25…way over:). For reference, I am 5’4″, and weigh 136 pounds. I have a long torso and long arms and usually wear one size larger on top than the bottom. I have an inverted triangle shape with broad shoulders and straight hips with very few curves. I hold my phone upside down to get a straighter angle and accurate proportions.

Most all of Talbots garments are available in misses, petite, plus, and plus petite sizes XS-XL. I’ll call out the sizes I’m wearing so you can gauge them for yourself.

This split neck hoodie in pink, white and blue would be great for the 4th of July. It’s nice lightweight cotton with spandex blend. I’m wearing a petite small so it runs TTS.

On the left I’m wearing the modern ankle jeans in 6 petite, and on the right I’m wearing them in 6 misses. Both are a little too full through the hips on me (remember, I have no curves). They have a soft cotton stripe down the side seam which is slimming and reminds me of tuxedo pants..

Who remembers seersucker? These shorts are a pink and white stripe seersucker in cotton with a touch of spandex. I’m wearing the regular 4 which has a 10 1/2” inseam. Each version has a different inseam so choose based on how long you want yours to be. This split neck tee is in patio red which gives a bit more punch to the cotton candy stripes of the shorts  I love the elbow-length sleeves and soft fabric. It comes in lots of other colors too,  I’m wearing a regular small.

I’ve tried on this denim pencil skirt before and I love it. It’s stretchy, comfy, and so much cooler than any shorts or pants could be. It has a small kick pleat in the front but otherwise, it’s perfectly classic. I’m wearing a six petite which is a little bit wide around the hips so I’d be better in 4 petite. The misses version is 2″ longer which is just enough to look dowdy on me.

This classic field jacket has a drawstring at the waist so you can slim the look. It’s a cotton/linen blend so perfect for warm breezes or chilly air conditioning. I am wearing a misses 2 to get the waistband in the correct place on my long torso.

This embroidered split neck tee has a very pretty boho vibe. It was flying out the door so all I could try on was this regular in a medium that is too long and large. The petite is almost 3 inches shorter which would’ve been much better. It’s 100% cotton so it’ll be very lightweight for warm weather. These are the same classic slim ankle jeans that I’ve been buying for years. These are the “Spa Blue in 6 petite which is a bit large for me.

This floral embroidered linen dress is nicely seamed at the waist to show your shape. The store showed this shrug over the top but I would choose a white one for less contrast with the dress. Yes, it matches the embroidery but it stands out and ruins the line of the dress. I’m wearing 6 misses in the dress and small misses in the shrug.

Sadly, this black sleeveless shirt is an XS, skin-tight, and sold out in my size. I’m going to phone around tomorrow and see if I can locate a small or medium petite. I love it with these

Talbots makes this charming cardigan in multiple colors and prints all year long. This one is particularly pretty with its ombre coloring. I’m wearing a small petite and would prefer the medium so I could wear something under it. I’m wearing it over a floral sleeveless shirt in 6 petite and white pedal pushers in 6 regular. The white pedal pushers are way too loose and long for me which leads me to think they were mislabeled.

Here are the same pedal pushers in a six-petite, which fits me. The size difference is dramatic. Notice the difference in the extra bulk of the fabric and the length. If you’re going to wear pedal pushers, try on lots of sizes until you find the ones that are flattering. This is the embroidered tee I wore above, this time in white. Worn with the cropped pedal pushers, I prefer the top with a half-tuck to lengthen the look of my legs.

I jumped on this pretty peach/pink-colored linen blazer the second I walked into the store. They call it pink, and it is, but it’s a gently warm-toned pink that’s soft and pretty. It also comes in bright watermelon pink which is stunning but overwhelmed my coloring. I’m wearing a 6 regular which fits perfectly. The jacket picks up one of the colors in these slim ankle floral bouquet jeans. They have multicolored flowers strewn across an ivory background so I paired them with this Pima cotton tank in ivory. The jeans are 6 regular and too long so I folded the bottom up an inch.

The Over 50 Style Team is going to go LIVE tomorrow at 11 am PT/2 pm ET today. Susan and I are holding down the fort this week while Tania and Deborah have other commitments. The topic is accessorizing in the summer. Please join us here.

Thanks for reading ladies and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

I love the glasses you are wearing. Could you maybe do a post on choosing glasses? Would love to know what brand yours are and why you selected them. I’ll bet a lot of thought went into your selection.

First off, I like your hair in the 1st photo as IMO it has a carefree appeal with no need to want to hide it under a hat, or worse feel tempted to wear a paper bag over one’s head …. ☺. Moving forward and with that said; as I have had to shop my closet namely due to pandemic restrictions a little over a year now, I too appreciate all that you have done on behalf of fashion (guidance and otherwise) and for sharing what I’ll describe as your ‘wellness tips’ for the mature woman. As to the line-up today; lots too choose from for fun in the sun for sure! Do like the split necklines and if ordering the linen blazer, would be curious if you will also try the ‘water melon’ color as well since appears quite nice on their website and is in the same color family. -Brenda-

Jennifer thank you so much for all the time you take to bring us your blog. Yours is the first email I look at every day! Talbots is my go to store so I love seeing all the new outfits that you tried on from their new collection. Since we have the exact same body type and we’re the exact same sizes I couldn’t be happier to see how everything looks on you. Thank you for comparing different sizes and telling us what size you’re wearing and how they fit differently. It’s so helpful! I actually loved almost everything you showed today. I have a split neck tee in black and love the elbow length sleeves and the slim fit through the midriff. Its very flattering. I think I need to go try on the embroidered tee. Love the floral pants!

At this point and time, I’m not actively searching for additional summer clothing pieces. UNLESS, I spot something that fits all my personal requirements! And that spit neck, embroidered T-shirt is a winner. I love all cotton and 3/4 sleeves. It’s also a piece that can surely mix with several items I already own. So, this is a smart sale priced top for me to buy.
Thank you for getting out there and showing us all that’s happening in these stores. It’s no picnic trying on outfit after outfit but you are definitely a trooper!
    Happy summer!

I love the orchid blouse blouse but I’d need to wear a cardigan for sure. I like the denim skirt but not sure if I would wear it much. My favorite is the floral pants. I would wear those. I’m smaller on my bottom half so they would actually help to balance me out. I hope you get the floral pants. You look great in them.

Yes, you’re exactly right. The floral pants will add balance, especially with a lighter top.

As others say, you’ve inspired me to add more color to my still rather neutral wardrobe…plenty of white, navy, tan and white stripes with a few brights thrown in. My go to stores seem to be Talbots, JCrew (tees and stripes) shirts and a few boho pieces from Anthropologie. I need a few of these tops you’re showing…..As always, you look fantastic!

As you know, my wardrobe is mostly neutrals too so I’m growing right along with you. I hope you’re well

Wow! Talbots is knocking it outa the park – nice quality and stylish options! The Boho vibe embroidered tunic and ombre cardigan are gorgeous! Thank you for your advice and for trying on the clothes for us. It sure helps seeing what clothes look like; the size 2 and 20 yrs old models don’t represent most of us. Love your IG videos with Tania, Susan and Deb – I learn a lot from you ladies and its like having a coffee chat with some girlfriends.

Jennifer, you outdid yourself trying on all these beautiful outfits. Thank you! I enjoyed seeing the variety and the possibilities. Those pedal pushers spoke to me – will have to give them a try. If I had to pick a favorite outfit, it would be the pink/peach blazer and floral pants one. It truly is stunning. (Not sure I could pull it off, but you look great.)

    Good morning,
Well because of you and several other bloggers I stopped into Talbots yesterday. Normally I just won’t spend that kind of money on clothes. The sale and promotions I got some really nice stuff. Thanks! I tried on those shorts . I loved them but didn’t get them. Waiting to slim down my butt a bit more. I also !oved THE personal attention I was given.
