Dressing Room Diary- Fresh Spring Colors From J. Jill

As I mentioned over the weekend, I’ve been craving more color. Our gray, gloomy days really get to me sometimes, so a shot or two of bright color just perks everything up. I didn’t see lots of color through the J. Jill window, but once I went in, I spotted more.

If youā€™re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session to see whatā€™s new and show you how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5ā€™4ā€³ and weigh around 139 lbs. I have broad shoulders with straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top. Youā€™ll see me try on clothes in colors and shapes that may or may not flatter me because I want you to see whatā€™s in the stores and get some styling ideas. I will tell you what sizes I am wearing to help you understand how things run.

J. Jill has streamlined its sizing so that every style is available as regular in sizes XS-4X. Petite and tall are still available in some popular styles, and all sizes are priced similarly.

There weren’t many dresses on the floor yet, but this one caught my eye because green is such a popular color for spring. This linen/rayon blend dress comes in black or this fern green. Its V-neckline is flattering, and the overall fit isnā€™t voluminous. Yes, it has gathered tiers, however, they lay flat because the fabric is soft, keeping the Little House on the Prairie vibes at bay. This size regular small hits the center of my knee. The petite is 2″ shorter.

SLUB TEXTURED CABLED SWEATER size SESSENTIAL COTTON STRETCH PANTS size S BORDER PRINT SCARF

This slub-textured cable sweater is very lightweight and perfect for spring. It comes in fresh green or this yellow, which really spoke to me. It’s a light cotton blend you could layer over other pieces like a long sleeve tee or blouse until it warms up. This sweater is long enough to wear over leggings. I love how yellow looks with green, so I paired it with these cotton pull-on pants. These are a cotton/rayon/spandex blend with plenty of stretch. They come in five colors. This regular has an inseam of 28″, petite is 25 1/2″, and tall is 30 1/2″. This pretty border print scarf ties both colors together and looks nice, bookending the pants up near the face.

SCOOP NECK TWEED SWEATER size petite MSLIM BOOTCUT JEANS size petite 8

This vanilla colors tweed sweater has a scoop neck with a crocheted border and 3/4 sleeves. It’s a cotton blend that will span the seasons in a very versatile neutral. I’m wearing it over these slim bootcut jeans that come in blue or this natural shade. The fabric of the natural is a little more substantial than the denim, so they suggest you size up. I didn’t find that necessary, but now you know šŸ™‚

DRAWSTRING-WAIST JACKET size petite S

I topped the look with this hooded jacket with a drawstring to snug up the waist. It’s a cotton/lyocell blend that’s great for spring. It’s long enough to cover all your tunic sweaters which I find very helpful.

MODERN UTILITY JACKET size SWEAREVER DOUBLE-FACE JERSEY DRESS size S

This utility jacket resembles a denim jacket with a stand collar. It comes in blue, beige, or pale green. It’s a great multipurpose jacket for spring with great reviews from customers. I’m wearing it over a sleeveless double-faced jersey A-line dress. J Jill calls this a maxi, but the regular S is calf length on me, so it’s closer to a midi. The petite version is 3″ shorter, which would confirm it’s a midi. It’s a substantial knit with a lovely drape that also comes in black. This dress could easily dress up or down for a graduation, baby shower, or running errands in a pair of white tennies.

WEAREVER LAYERING TANK size S WEAREVER KNIT BOYFRIEND JEANS size SPUREJILL PEPLUM JACKET size petite M

These boyfriend jeans are really terrific and so comfy, they almost came home with me. Theyā€™re actually stretch pants with jeans styling in a cotton blend with 12% spandex! That makes them as comfy as leggings. They have a tacked-up cuff with an inseam of 27″ in regular, 25″ in petite, and 29Ā½” in tall. These “jeans” come in three colors. I paired them with their wearever layering tank, which is a great length for leggings and skinny pants. It’s available in three colors and one print. I topped these with this Pure Jill Peplum jacket. It’s made from organic cotton slub terry, which feels like jammies. It has on-seam pockets and is also a great length to cover tunic tops.

PURE JILL 5-POCKET KNIT PULL-ON JEANS size petite SLAYERING TANK size SSOFT CREW NECK CARDIGAN size S

Here’s another great “jeanā€ I loved the feel of. This 5-pocket, knit pull-on jean is a customer favorite season after season. They have enough spandex to hold their shape and feel as comfy as a legging yet look like a jean. The inseams are 29″Ā in regular, 27″ in petite, and 31Ā½” in tall. You could also roll the bottoms up for a sportier look. This soft crew neck cardigan is a cotton blend that comes in this blue or black. It’s just a great little versatile cardi that will go over so many things this spring.

This pleated halter dress is in a light woven crepe with a large banded bottom in the reverse of the print. It requires a racerback or strapless bra or you could plan to wear a cardi or light jacket šŸ™‚

I could not resist this fresh, endive green color. It may not be in my best color palette, but wow. it’s fun! It also comes in dandelion or black. It’s a low hip-length cotton blend that can go with so many things. On the left, I’m wearing it over the Pure Jill slim leg pant. These are a cotton, Tencel, spandex knit with a flat elasticized waistband. They come in three colors and are machine washable. On the left, I half tucked the sweater into their authentic fit slim-leg jeans. These come in five colors and are super comfy. I don’t know which look I like best. Which do you prefer?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Wow! Some pretty, bright colors for J. Jill. I’m so happy to see this. I like their clothing, but had found most kind of dull in color…until now!
The 2 blue dresses are really pretty. I may have to consider the lime color too; even though that’s not in my usual color palette.
And you can’t beat pull on jeans! I’ll have to try them.

  2. Loved everything on you today! Yellow and green reminds me of daffodils and spring. My skin tone will not go with either unfortunately. I wear every shade of blue. The cardigan in blue was sweet and comfortable looking. I really donā€™t wear dresses. The desert mountain climate and winds make that hard. I am tempted to buy the cotton stretch jeans you are wearing. I still need to lose a few more pounds. You looked wonder in the yellow sweater and scarf. I liked the white jeans as they look more refined.

  3. I just bought that scarf. Love the greens. Thanks for showing the peplum jacket. I couldn’t figure it out from the pictures online. DRD is so useful for stuff like that. I think I’m going to pass on the peplum now.

    1. Greens are so fun this year

  4. What a fabulous dressing room try-on!! So many good choices you showed us. Thanks!

  5. I love your fashion posts. I look forward to reading them first thing every morning. I especially like that you post both positive and negative comments. Some bloggers just post positive reviews and you donā€™t have a chance to compare thoughts and ideas. Thank you for sharing all of your readers ideas.

  6. Thank you for showing us these outfits, Jenifer. I haven’t been to JJill in a while – I may have to stop in.
    Have a wonderful day!

  7. I like the half-tuck for the sweater. I find that letting a long sweater drop over my tummy is not a great look. I’m short waisted and found a short sweater at Duluth so that made them my new best friend.

  8. Really like the yellow and green outfit. Looks great together. Also like the sweater you have tucked in. That’s what I’ve been doing lately and I think it makes your legs look longer.

    1. It does help make them look longer šŸ™‚

  9. Many great looks! Your descriptions of items are so helpful.

    1. Oh– I also was wondering about your necklace(s). The pearls look so nice with all of the outfits.

      1. They are linked under the second photo, and you can get a discount off their entire site with the code AWSL!

  10. I purchased the green dress in black a couple of days ago, I like the sleeve. Also ordered a maxi in turquoise with sleeve to cover top of arm. In the south loose fitting works well with the heat. Still need to go get cotton pants. Thank you for your ideas.

    1. I loke the sleeve too!

  11. J Jill is my jam! Thanks for modeling all the latest styles. Happy International Womenā€™s Day!!

    1. Happy International Women’s Day to you too!

  12. I bought the green Jardin dress over the weekend. Usually I dislike tiered dresses but this one is not voluminous and looks pretty good on me. The linen blend will be great for our hot summer. I plan to wear it either with sandals or white sneakers, and a long necklace.

    1. Itā€™s a very versatile looking dress. I think youā€™ll get a lot of use out of it.

  13. Oh how I wish JJill served Canada. I love that yellow sweater outfit, the whole thing, so I am hoping I can find a similar look here. The yellow does not scream warm base, so I would have to check it out. Even with another snow storm on the way, I am ready to bring out the spring looks.

    1. The yellow is not overly warm which is why it appealed to me. Spring will get here eventually!

    2. Penney Reynolds says:

As a fellow Canadian I agree, I would love to see them here. I note that they do ship to Canada but charge a $12. processing fee per address.

  14. Pat Patterson says:

Happy wednesday, great looks today with the colors and pants. Iā€™m headed today to the Talbots sale and JJill is next door and definitely stopping there.
    Have a great day

  15. Really loved the boyfriend jeans and pull-on jeans you modeled. Best looking ones I’ve seen for some time. And thanks for highlighting J. Jill. It’s been a while since I’d considered their clothing lines. Appreciate the reminder! Still not loving the three tiered dresses though. Just think it doesn’t work for us unless it’s layered with a jeans jacket & scarf and good looking sandals or wedges. And even then if we have to think that hard about an outfit it may not be a good fit for our wardrobe
