Dressing Room Diary: Fun Summer Colors at J. Jill

The summer colors in the latest J. Jill collection are soft, vibrant, warm-toned, and cool-toned. They have something for every complexion this season. I popped in for a try-on session last week and had a blast experimenting with so many great pieces. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session to see what’s new and show you how it looks on a woman over 25.

For reference, I’m 5’4″ and weigh around 145 lbs. I have broad shoulders with straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often wear one size larger on top. I’ll tell you what sizes I’m wearing to help you understand how things run. J. Jill has streamlined its sizing so that every style is available as regular in sizes XS-4X. Petite and tall are still available in popular styles, and all sizes are priced similarly.

COTTON GAUZE ONE POCKET DRESS size S

This is a fabulous cotton gauze dress in persimmon, wild orchid, or black. It’s a slight a-line shape with fitted shoulders (thank you, J. Jill ) and on-seam pockets in a breezy shape. This dress is opaque enough to not need a slip which is always a plus in hot weather! You could also add a belt if you want to give it more shaping. I love that cotton gauze is such an easy-care fabric. It’s machine washable, never requires ironing, and packs like a dream. The petite might have been a better length on me, but it was not stocked in my store.

COTTON GAUZE SPLIT HEM TUNIC size PS / COTTON GAUZE SHORTS size S / KNIT TANK size S

There were quite a few cotton gauze tunics styled with shorts displayed around the store. In fact, I saw the same look over at other retailers, so it’s a “thing” this summer. These shorts have a pull-on elastic waistband and come in 3 colors or a navy and white stripe. The inseam is 7″ in regular, 8″ in 2X, and 6.5″ in petite. This Mediterranean color is vibrant and fun!

I’m styling them with a color-coordinated tank that comes in 7 colors, plus a navy and white stripe. It’s a nice, substantial cotton/spandex knit that is quite opaque and skims over the torso without clinging (my favorite style).

I’m wearing this cotton gauze tunic shirt in petite. The regular is 1.5″ longer, plus it comes in tall. This tunic comes in 5 wearable colors to coordinate with lots of other pieces in this collection, and it’s also long enough to double as a bathing suit cover-up.

LINEN SEAMED V-NECK MIDI DRESS size S / LINEN SINGLE BUTTON CARDIGAN size S

This blue and white linen midi dress has a pineapple-inspired print, which I think adds to its summer feel. It also comes in a gorgeous rainforest green that would look pretty against pops of white. It skims the body with some slight shaping at the waist but is loose enough for the hottest weather. I found the linen opaque enough to not require a slip. I think this would be cute with a woven belt and some low-wedge espadrilles.

I topped it with this single-button linen cardigan. These light cardigans are the perfect layer to protect you from the chill in heavily air-conditioned places, keep the sun off your shoulders, and not add any warmth. It comes in 4 colors, including the same Mediterranean blue that I shared above.

LONG LINEN DUSTER JACKET size S / PINTUCKED LINEN STRETCH SLIM PANTS size S / EASY A-LINE TANK size S

This linen duster and stretch linen pants were the only things my store stocked in this yummy soft ash color. The pants come in 5 colors, and the duster also comes in a stunning Amalfi blue shade. I have these pants from years past and love the slim fit. They’re a pull-on style that’s easy to wear and style with lots of tops. They look great with a pair of tennies and a simple tee. These have a flat waistband, belt loops, and a cropped slim leg. This regular isn’t cropped on me, but it would be in the petite version.

The jacket is the 3/4 length I talked about here when we discussed proportion. If I styled it with a shorter tee or tucked the front of this one in, the proportions would be more pleasing. The weight of this linen is more like a shirt than a jacket so it’s very cool and lightweight.

SLIM FIT ANKLE JEANS size 6 / EVERYDAY LINEN BUTTON FRONT SHIRT size S

This blue and white linen shirt has been a best seller with AWSL readers after we featured it in this outfit collage, so I was anxious to try it on. It’s a fresh pretty print and very lightweight. This classic linen shirt also comes in 2 stripes and 5 solid colors. It’s long enough to tie at the waist and thin enough to tuck in if you don’t want to wear it out.

These slim-ankle jeans also come in black or a medium blue wash. This is a J. Jill customer’s favorite style because they fit well, the fabric is nice and soft, and they have a touch of stretch. The inseams are 29″ in regular, 27″ in petite, and 31½” in tall. The description says the rise is below the waist, which would probably be true for me in the petite sizing.

LINEN KNIT SHIRT size S / LINEN KNIT V-NECK TANK size S / EASY LINEN WIDE LEG CROPS size S

This wild orchid color is certainly eye-catching, and I had a blast styling it. J. Jill makes quite a few pieces in this shade, so you can create a small capsule to mix and match pieces. These wide-leg linen pants fit beautifully with a zipper and button closure and some elastic in the waistband. They’re 100% woven linen, which is machine washable. The inseams are 25″ in regular, 24″ in regular 2X, inseam, 23″ in petite, and inseam, and 27″ in tall. The brand description calls them a crop/capri, but this is not a true capri.

This v-neck tank is 100% knit linen, which makes it drapey and extra soft. It’s low hip length with side slits, so you could easily wear it out over slim pants. It also comes in an orange and white stripe. I love outfits in one color head to toe because it’s a clean and uncomplicated look that’s a no-brainer to put together.

The linen knit shirt can be buttoned closed like a regular shirt and will be super cool in warm weather. It comes in 3 colors and would have come home with me if my store had stocked the stunning pond blue color :). I enjoy the extra structure collars and plackets give to knit linen and cotton shirts.

COTTON GAUZE TUNIC size PS / COTTON GAUZE STRAIGHT LEG CROPS size PS / PIMA 3/4 SLEEVE TEE size S

Same cotton gauze tunic as above, this time styled with cotton gauze straight-leg crops. I was delighted to find these white pants are not see-through! They also come in navy and have inseams of 26″ in regular, 25″ in regular 2X, inseam, 24″ in petite, and 28″ in tall.

The 100% Pima cotton tee has 3/4 sleeves and a flattering v-neck. The print is a pineapple motif like the linen dress above, but more saturated color. It also comes in 6 solids in a substantial cotton that you can’t see through. I seem to be mentioning opacity a lot in this try-on because it’s an important feature for me when the weather is hot.

EASY LINEN WIDE LEG CROPS size S / EVERYDAY LINEN SHIRT size S

Here’s the same linen shirt I shared in the blue and white pattern above. I’m a huge fan of stripes any time of year…but a stripe in linen really rings my bell. It also comes in a gorgeous blue and white stripe, plus five solids. These are the same pants I shared above in Orchid. I prefer the look with the shirt tied at the waist because the proportion is better, but it’s still great with the shirt worn loose. I also think the shirt would be fun worn open as a third layer over a white tee.

What colors in this collection ring your bell?
Thanks for reading and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

Some of these look like they’d be great for lounging around on a hot day, but overall, I’m not excited about any of them. JJill hasn’t excited me in a long time.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. My first job as a teenager was at a small fashion boutique where I streamed all the clothes. They would look so much better if streamed!

    2. I love JJill. The majority of my wardrobe is from there. Great styles for work. I’m a little disappointed in some of the spring style. Some of the dresses are shapeless and look sloppy. I do like the monochromatic pink outfit. Very cute and flattering. All that said, you always look terrific in everything you wear. Lucky you!

      1. I think many of J Jill’s pieces improve with belts or tucking.

  3. All of these pieces look comfortable and cool for summer. You look especially nice in the Wild Orchid outfit. I prefer one color dressing as well. Opacity is very important to me and I appreciate that you mention it as I have to order online and find out later if it is see through. Good dressing room try ons today. I hope you are enjoying your vacation cruise!

  4. Love the striped dress, but the link isn’t there?

    1. I don’t see a striped dress in this post. If you mean the one in the email, click the image to get the link.

      1. I tapped the striped dress and it takes you to the embroidered blouse. The others work but not that one .

  5. Pieces like this are how I dress all summer long. Well done!

  6. I have the gauze dress in orchid. Ordered thru the store for color and petite. Looks great on. Wash rd up well and hung to dry.
