Dressing Room Diary: New Navy and White for Spring from Nordstrom
Before we left for Mexico, I popped into the store and tried on some fresh navy and white for spring from Nordstrom. I’m a big fan of navy and white, and Nordstrom did not disappoint. Some are classic pieces, and a few have trending features. Several came home with me, as well as a bathing suit, for my trip to Mexico.
A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session to show you what’s new and how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5’4″ and weigh around 145 lbs. I have broad shoulders, straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top. I try on clothes in colors and shapes that may not flatter me because I want you to see what’s in the stores and curate some outfits so you get some styling ideas. I mention what size I’m wearing to help you understand how things run.
These navy pull-on denim jeans are intended to be ankle length but are full length on me, which I actually prefer. They’re like a soft chambray-type fabric, so they drape nicely. They run large, so consider going down one size. They have an elastic waistband with a drawstring, which is mostly for show because they stay in place without it.
I’m wearing them with this fun white denim jacket that has a flirty peplum that highlights your waist and gives it a flattering shape. It also comes in mid-wash blue in a very nice wash (plus size here). Its sleeves have a slight puff at the shoulder making it great for women who like to add some width up top.
This striped tank is a great layering piece and also comes in a red and white stripe in sizes XS-XXL. I went up to a medium and needed every bit of it because I prefer my clothes to skim my torso, and this is a bit more body con.
I folded these straight-leg jeans up, but they do come in petite…my store just didn’t stock them. They come in 5 washes, plus size here. They’re NYDJ’s very popular Marilyn straight-leg style that I’ve been adding to my wardrobe for years.
I could easily wear a medium in this striped tee, but they were sold out in my store. I’m finding fewer sizes at my local store as they bring in more brands. I see that as a plus because I get to see more options and can always order my size online.
I love this washed organic cotton cardigan. It softens the navy and gives it a casual vibe. My local store is adding more and more of the Faherty brand, which I enjoy getting to explore. This also comes in a gorgeous golden brown that looks like a warm beige to me. It comes in sizes XS-XL.
This pretty chiffon button-up blouse comes in 11 colors and patterns; I’m wearing the Albi Stripe Lavender. It’s quite sheer, so I recommend it be worn with a nude-colored cami. I’m using this white tank as an underpinning for modesty :). These blouses would be so pretty tied at the waist over a cotton tank dress in the warm weather. They come in sizes XS-L and plus sizes here.
I’m wearing it tucked into these NYDJ wide-leg jeans. I did own and love a pair of these several years ago, but have since outgrown them so it may be time to replace them. They’re soft, stretchy denim and very comfy. The 27″ inseam is full-length on me, and they do not appear to come in petite but are in plus size here.
I could have worn a small in this navy and white striped hoodie, but I like the casual vibe of an oversized look with these cuffed jeans. It also comes in solid white, but I think this fresh navy and white stripe is perfect for spring. The fabric is organic and very lightweight so it would also be good in the summer. It comes in sizes XXS-XXL.
These slim cuffed ankle jeans come in dark and medium wash; I’m wearing the medium. They’re described as “between a skinny and straight leg”, but they seem straight to me. NYDJ always stretches out with wear, so they recommend you order one size down. These have a 27 1/2″ inseam you can cuff up or leave down.
I have this Caslon denim jacket in blue, and love how flexible, stretchy, and soft it is. There is no typical bottom band at the waist, so it’s flexible and as comfortable as a shirt. I sized up to a large to give me extra room, so I think it runs a bit small. It comes in sizes XS-XL in both regular and petite.
These NYDJ relaxed linen blend shorts are a favorite year after year. This year they come in black, beige or this navy. The fabric is super comfy against the skin and has plenty of stretch. I’m wearing a 6, so I found they run a bit generous and come in sizes 00-18. These would be easy to dress up with a blazer for a preppy look or down with a simple tee and sneakers.
I love how comfy these modern-looking wide-cuff jeans are. This new wide-cuff jean trend is really growing on me, and this pair is the comfiest I’ve tried on. The cuff is stitched down and stationary in a super soft, stretchy denim that is as comfortable as a pair of leggings. The reviews are terrific on these jeans with good reason. They have so much stretch you could easily go down one size. They have a nice high waist, too. If you’re going to try this trend, this is a good pair to start with.
This ivory and navy striped henley is an organic cotton blend with spandex. The blend includes Lenzing EcoVero viscose which is a sustainably produced fiber using pulp made from renewable wood sources and certified with the EU Ecolabel for high environmental standards. It’s a fine sweater knit, not a tee shirt fabric. The quality is lovely, and the stripes match nicely, which is important to me. I tried the medium on as well but found the small fit me best. It comes in sizes XXS-XXL

I tried to order from Nordstrom the other day and they said they do not ship to Canada. I was disappointed. Any ideas how I can purchase from them. . We cannot travel because of my husband’s health .

I really like that peplum jacket. Since I am spending more time (in public) sitting than standing (thanks to the wheelchair) I’m finding these shorter tops more comfortable. Another consideration I’m making is that I will be more often viewed from the top down, and something visible from up there will make more of an impact. A little flounce from that peplum might work. Also, thanks for the Caslon. I do like that brand.

I love a navy & white striped tee shirt for spring. I think it’s time I go through my spring/summer wardrobe to see what fits and I still like. I’m behind this year due to hip surgery.

Peep toes booties go in and out of style. I’m not seeing many in the stores but I’d wear mine if I liked them.
I comment…why do these designers always style clothes with the stripes going horizontal…there are quite a few of us older ladies that can’t pull this look off.

Luckily button up shirts have vertical stripes. Knit tops usually don’t.

Particularly like the peplum denim jacket and its details though due to my wide shoulders, I might restyle its gathered sleeve head to enable me to wear it also as a top. Appreciating your time and effort in doing these Dressing Room Diaries.

So glad you’re having a great trip to Mexico. Do you know what size you are wearing in the Caslon striped Henley in the first photo? The size chart puts me on the cusp, so knowing your size might tip the balance.
A small. I tried the medium but it was too oversized. The fit is loose so you size down.
