Dressing Room Diary with Classic Finds From J. Jill this Winter

I made two trips to the store for this post, so Iā€™m wearing different shoes in half of the photos. One was a good hair day, and the other, not so much. Many J. Jill pieces lean toward boho styling, but today Iā€™m sharing some classic finds from J. Jill this winter. Much of it is also on sale, either 40% or 30% off.

If youā€™re new here, welcome. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session to see whatā€™s new and show you how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5ā€™4ā€³ and weigh around 145 lbs. I have broad shoulders with straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often buy one size larger on top. Youā€™ll see me try on clothes in colors and shapes that may or may not flatter me because I want you to see whatā€™s in the stores and get some styling ideas. I will tell you what sizes I wear to help you understand how things run.

J. Jill has streamlined its sizing so that every style is available as regular in sizes XS-4X. Petite and tall are still available in popular styles, and all sizes are priced similarly. Iā€™m wearing mostly petites because they fit me best these days.

WHEREVER KNIT VELVET JACKET size MP / JEWELED BUTTON TUNIC size MP /
HIGH-RISE BOOTCUT JEANS size 8P

I love this little velvet knit jacket. Many velvets feel stiff and unforgiving, but this knit with 8% spandex is as comfy as a cardigan. You could easily dress this up over a satin skirt or down with denim the way Iā€™m showing here. It buttons up the front and has a soft fabric belt that you could close or wear open and tie the belt in the back.

I’m wearing it over this white cotton/spandex tunic with jeweled bottoms. The shirt is longer than the jacket, so I tucked it into these classic high-rise bootcut jeans. The tunic is long enough to cover your backside, so it would also be great over these slim velveteen pants or leggings.

These bootcut jeans are a great classic cut with a high waist and come in a full range of sizes. The inseam on this petite is 26.5ā€³, which is a smidge too short on me. Pants are always a challenge for me in petite garments because even though my legs arenā€™t very shortā€¦I prefer to wear my pants on the longer side to elongate my look.

WEAREVER REMOVABLE SNOOD PULLOVER size SP / WEAREVER STRAIGHT LEG TROUSERS size S

This pullover is a soft, fuzzy knit and comes with this removable snood. I would only wear this ā€œsnoodā€ around my neck, but you could pull it up over the back of your head if you wanted. These wearever trousers have a great fit with pull-on styling and lots of stretch. Theyā€™re a substantial rayon/jersey knit with a stitched front seam that gives a bit of structure, but they’re basically a drapey pants with a very comfortable fit.

RIBBED OPEN CARDIGAN size S / BUTTONED SHOULDER SWEATER size MP /
HIGH-RISE BOOTCUT JEANS size 8P

This rib-textured cardigan is rich navy blue. Itā€™s a mid/heavy-weight cotton acrylic that feels substantial but would not be too hot indoors. This is a great layering piece to go over so many things in a milder climate. The description mentions cables, but as a knitter, I would just say itā€™s just a heavy rib.

I’m wearing it over this button-shoulder pullover sweater. Youā€™ll notice the stripes donā€™t continue along the way to the neckline of this sweater. Thatā€™s a popular trend/style Iā€™m seeing a lot of these days and gives it a modern look. The sweater is hip-length, but I tucked it in to help my legs look longer.

THE JOURNEY COAT size MP / JEWELED BUTTON WHITE SHIRT size MP / BOOTCUT JEANS size MP

Here are the same boot-cut jeans and white jeweled button shirt as above worn under the scarlet Journey coat. This classic coat has princess seams which give it a nice shaping and a slimming silhouette. The length is great for wearing over pants or a skirt. Itā€™s a rayon blend thatā€™s perfect for milder climates.

BUTTONED SHOULDER SWEATER size LP / COATED SLIM-LEG JEANS size 8 reg

Hereā€™s the same sweater I showed above, this time in a tweedy red, and it also comes in a beautiful blue. It looks quite different in the textured fabric than the stripe. These slim-fit coated jeans have a slight shine that resembles faux leather but is a breathable rayon/cotton blend. It does have spandex for stretch, and theyā€™re pretty comfortable. The slight shine gives them an elevated look, but theyā€™re still denim.

ZIP FRONT PUFFER VEST size MP / FAIR ISLE SWEATER size XS  / PONTE SLIM LEG size S / SHOES

This zip-front puffer vest is a great length for wearing over many of their tops and sweaters. It comes in dark teal, sugar beet, and black in all sizes, including tall and petite. It has a down filling with a Sherpa-lined collar and fleece-lined pockets to be extra cozy.

Iā€™m wearing it over the Ponte slim knit pants that are pretty much perfect. They also have a pin-tuck front seam, which adds some structure and helps your leg look longer. They come in four colors. This fair isle sweater seems to be sold out in black and cream but is available in a rich mushroom shade. Itā€™s a soft cotton blend, so itā€™s wonderful for those who are sensitive to wool.

BEJEWELED BUTTON CARDIGAN size SP / DENIM SHIRT size MP / SLIM ANKLE JEANS size 8P

Dressing up a column of denim is as simple as adding this little v-neck cardigan. This fun little cardigan is a cotton blend with large jeweled buttons and a classic fit. You could pop this on over a silky skirt and dress it way up, or just have some fun on a casual day. I’m wearing it over these slim-ankle jeans and a simple denim shirt.

ZIP FRONT PUFFER VEST size MP / PINTUCK SWEATER TUNICWEAREVER SLIM LEG size S

This pintuck sweater tunic comes in 5 colors and is long enough to wear over your favorite leggings. It’s a soft cotton blend with side slits at the hem which help elongate the look of your leg. I paired it with these wearever slim leg pants which fit beautifully. They come in several colors and have 13% Lycra so they will maintain their shape.

PLAID CRINKLE BUTTON FRONT SHIRT size M / PULL-ON CORDUROY PANTS size PS

This crinkle plaid shirt has a discreet little ruffle around the neck and pintucks in front which give it a feminine look. The fabric is a super soft rayon blend with 2% spandex. I don’t know about you, but I appreciate a touch of spandex in everything because it helps the fabric feel softer than a woven one. These corduroy pants are a pull-on style that appear to have a fly and button closure. They also come in cream. I think they run large so you could consider sizing down. The corduroy is super soft with a nice amount of stretch.

PLAID TUNIC SHIRTPURE JILL SLIM LEG PANTS size SP

These pure jill slim pants are another customer favorite. The fabric is a cotton/tencel blend with a touch of spandex and an elegant finish. They’re full length, which I always appreciate with inseams of 31″ regular, 28Ā½” petite, 34″ tall. This plaid tunic shirt appears sold out in this color, but is still available in red. It’s a super soft rayon that drapes nicely and is thin enough to be cozy but not hot. It runs large so consider sizng down.

  1. Love all these outfits on you. My style.

  2. Could you please tell me where you got your glasses and what brand they are? I have been looking for some neutral ones and those are very attractive?

  3. Lois Williams says:

I wear JJill because they have tall! I have the window pane sweater & some of the blouses. So ninice to have sleeves that are long enough šŸ˜Š

I ordered the knit 2-button blazer from j crew that you had in your site. Wondering if you may deled it in petite or regular length. I am 5ā€™4ā€ and got it in regular but think petite may fit better.

    1. I have the regular. I have long arms and wide shoulders which meant the petite sleeves were too short on me.

  5. From what I am seeing, I really like the cut of the pants that you modeled however with that being said; I wish they would be more explicit on their website as to what carrier they use for Canadian shipments as some retailers do have us jumping through hoops (ā˜ŗ) when it comes to delivery or returns which I will avoid if I can. -Brenda-
P.S.: Hopefully that doesn’t sound too critical.

    1. I totally understand! Shipping is an important issue.

  6. Jennifer – I have a question about color…want your opinion. Your coloring is similar to mine and sometimes I feel that wearing “red” or “navy” is just too dark next to my face so I break it up by wearing a lighter color blouse/tee to take away the color. Does this make sense? I see you wearing the red coat and the navy cardigan and they don’t look too dark to me….sound crazy about the way I feel when I wear them?

    1. I often feel red is too intense on me so it’s a great idea to wear softer colors next to your face. Listen to your instinct about color. It’s often right.

  7. Thank you, Jennifer! You look terrific in those outfits! J.Jill is my favorite clothing store. I love their styles and fabrics, and that I can get everything in petite sizes.

    1. I LOVE that they have everything in petite.

  8. I love the dressing room diaries because I get to see clothes on a real person that is similar coloring and size. I am a slightly shorter and thinner woman but look the same in the clothes I buy after your style. I did spring for some plaid flannel shirts and have really enjoyed wearing in our chilly weather. It is snowing right now! I love the black velvet belted jacket on you.

    1. Stay warm! Snow can be fun when youā€™re inside.

  9. Love DRD, always helpful. And, for some reason, I always forget about j jill. Velvet jacket looks great and I agree with othersā€¦plaid shirts are great on you.
Off topic but hoping you might offer guidance on nic+zoe tweed pant. TTS? If between sizes, go up?
    Thx, Jennifer.

    1. I think that pant ran generously plus it has stretch so I wouldnā€™t size up.

  10. I own many of your modeled items – my go to store!
The navy long cardi had to be ordered as it runs huge.
    Ya look great in everything!

  11. Laura Short says:

Love J. Jill and enjoyed the try on session. Their clothes always have nice drape & the “just right” weight of fabric. So glad they have expanded sizing. I’m a Petite and they are hard to find. I’m running to my local store to see the red jacket and the velvet! I also really like those grey boots you are wearing. Did I miss the info on them? If not, let us know:).

    1. Theyā€™re from Eileen Fisher last year. Very comfy!

  12. I agree with Bea – you look great in plaid! Actually, all of your selections today are spot on.

  13. I think all these clothes look great on you but my favorite outfit is the velvet jacket with jeans, so festive! The striped sweater is something that I know I would wear often.

    1. I would wear that entire outfit! Just my style.

  14. Jennifer, you should buy those plaid shirts. They are perfect with black pants, and they are so youthful looking! I bet you would get lots of wear out of them.

    1. Iā€™m seriously considering the blue one because itā€™s styling is so unique. I love plaid on others but donā€™t own any.

  15. Linda Shearer says:

Really love all these clothes. Especially the Velvet Black blazer. Iā€™ve never been to j jill but sounds like a good time to go!

    1. That was my favorite.

  16. Wow, loving this post. I haven’t spent time shopping for clothes for myself lately, but this makes me want to head to JJill right now!! Especially love the velvet jacket for dressing up or down. Thanks Jennifer, I always love the dressing room diaries

  17. Joan cullen says:

That red and cream colour combination looks terrific on youā€¦.the red lights you upā€¦.draws attention to the centre and is very sliming!
