6 Fall Outfit Ideas from Nordstrom: New Styles, Easy Ways to Wear Them

I popped into Nordstrom to put together some fall outfits and try a few different ways to wear the new styles. Plaid and animal print are both big this fall, but how we wear them makes all the difference. Pair either with familiar jeans or a simple sweater, and they become much easier to picture in our own wardrobes.
We don’t need to replace everything to make getting dressed more interesting. Sometimes a jacket in a different shape or a change in texture is enough to give clothes we’ve worn for years a fresh look. Here’s what I found:

I started with red because I’ve been wanting to explore more color this season. Zella always carries fun options, so this cool-toned red spoke to me. The faux shearling vest adds the texture I’ve been craving, and the matching performance tee keeps the layers smooth underneath. The vest would also be great over my crisp white shirts or a thin navy sweater, paired with comfortable pants.
I was thrilled to find these Frame Le Sleek jeans in Pixi, their petite fit, because they’re actually ankle-length on me! They have a nice high waist to hold everything in and enough stretch to be very comfortable. MOTHER also has its Lil’ MOTHER line with petite proportions. It’s nice to have options beyond hemming. I’d add sneakers and let the red do the work.
I’m seeing swing-style denim jackets everywhere this fall, and I love this take on a classic. This Caslon jacket is fabulous with raglan shoulders, bell-shaped sleeves, and a contrasting faux suede collar. It’s 99% cotton with a touch of stretch and runs true to size. I’m wearing a medium, which is a smidge too large for me, so it runs true to size. A close-fitting top and narrow legs offer great balance to the jacket’s fullness.
These Kut From the Kloth coated flare jeans add a little edge with their matte, leather-like finish. They have a high waist, shaping pockets, and a stretchy modal-blend fabric. These come in black or chocolate…I’m styling black because the chocolate appeared to be flying out the door. I like them with the swing jacket because the flare is slim on top then dulpicates the falre of the copatr below the knee. They run true to size, but don’t come in petite.
This outfit surprised me, and I brought both pieces home. The Halogen cable cardigan is the exact cool-toned brown I’ve been looking for. It’s 100% cotton, a good option if wool or cashmere bothers you, and also comes in black. I’m wearing a medium. I prefer a V-neck for necklaces, and the shorter, fitted shape works well with wider pants.
I paired it with these Wit & Wisdom plaid trousers, which are unlike anything I own, but fit into my goal of branching out with my style. I’m seldom a fan of front pleats, but these aren’t overwhelming and don’t add bulk up front. The navy-and-ginger snap plaid adds pattern without bright color, and the soft fabric has 3% spandex, so they’re very comfy. They come in regular and petite and run true to size. Nordstrom lists a 31″ inseam for regular but doesn’t specify the petite measurement…I’m wearing 6P.
I’ll probably dress these down with my new black sneakers. A simple navy sweater would also pick up the navy in the plaid without competing with it.
I’m seeing a lot of plaid for fall…I know, not revolutionary. This Bagatelle jacket caught my eye because the colors are soft and low-contrast. The oversized rounded collar also gives it a different look. This looks like a woven jacket, but it’s actually a knit with stretch, so there’s some ease in that structured shape, which is my favorite type of jacket.
I paired it with these Wit & Wisdom patch-pocket jeans in forest moss. The green works nicely with the muted plaid and gives the whole outfit a blended look. These are a cotton-and-lyocell blend with stretch, and come in 4 colors, in petite and regular. The back darts near the waist help prevent gapping and give great shaping. This size 8 is a bit loose on me, so they run true to size.
This Caslon leopard cardigan is so soft, and I didn’t find it itchy. It’s 70% wool and 30% cashmere, with a fairly fitted shape, so I sized up, but it runs true to size. The print is soft and muted, so the black looks closer to deep gray to me, which makes the leopard feel less in-your-face. You could wear this buttoned up on its own or layer it over many things. I’d also love it draped around my shoulders.
These Kut From the Kloth corduroy pants fit beautifully. They’re soft, stretchy, and come in regular and petite. The brownie shade is warmer than my photo shows and looks lovely with the tan in the cardigan. This is where mixing textures makes neutral colors more interesting. My color seems to be selling out in petite, so I think a lot of women are adding brown to their wardrobe this season.
I topped it with this Halogen faux fur peacoat, which is incredibly soft and beautifully made. It’s fully lined, with a relaxed fit that leaves room for a sweater. I’d wear this just as happily over jeans and a plain tee because there’s no reason to save all that softness for an evening out, and glamour is to be enjoyed!
This Nordstrom Cropped animal-print jacket is fabulous, and its shape is what caught my eye. The raglan sleeves slope softly from the neckline and widen into a slight bell, while the stand collar frames your face. Those details give it a very different look from a standard cropped jacket. It’s a lined wool blend with a blurred gray-and-black print. The medium is too big on me, so I think it runs large. It’s got a very fun vibe.
These Wit & Wisdom Sawyer straight-leg jeans in deep indigo are about as classic as jeans get, which is exactly what I like with this jacket. Not everything needs to make a statement. They have a little stretch, come in four colors in regular and petite, and work just as well with a sweater and loafers.
