Fall Wedding Guest Dresses for Women Over 50 (With Sleeves and Without)
A fall wedding is a poor place to discover that your dress only works when you’re standing still. We need to sit through the ceremony, get up from dinner, and enjoy ourselves without tugging at a neckline or thinking about our shoes all evening. The dress code matters, but so does how the outfit actually works on us.

Fall Wedding Guest Dresses for Women Over 50
What to Wear to a Fall Wedding Over 50
Start with the wedding’s setting, theme, and formality. A daytime garden ceremony calls for something different from an evening reception in a ballroom. If the couple has chosen a theme, take it as a cue, not a costume assignment. Then choose a dress that fits well and feels like you. Rich colors, velvet, and lace can work beautifully in fall, but we don’t all need to show up in burgundy. Finish with jewelry that suits the dress and shoes you can wear for the whole celebration.
How to Dress for a Fall Wedding Dress Code
Wedding dress codes can be surprisingly vague, so here’s how I interpret the most common ones.
Black tie calls for a gown or a very elevated full-length dress. This is the time for beautiful fabrics, a little embellishment, and the jewelry you’ve been saving for somewhere special. Alex Evenings has a range of gorgeous gowns, some of which you’ll see below.
Cocktail usually means a polished knee-length or midi dress. You don’t need a gown, but I wouldn’t wear something that could double as an office dress either. Velvet, lace, satin, or some tasteful sparkle helps distinguish the dress from what you’d wear to dinner or an ordinary Saturday night.
Semi-formal gives you more range. A midi, dressy maxi, or polished knee-length dress all work. You can also dress it up or down a little, depending on the venue, setting, and dress code.
Casual does not mean jeans unless the couple has specifically told you otherwise. For a daytime garden, winery, or backyard wedding, I’d choose a pretty dress in a relaxed fabric and let the shoes and accessories do less of the heavy lifting.
When in doubt, I’d rather be a bit overdressed than look as though I misunderstood the invitation.

Fall Wedding Guest Colors to Wear and Avoid
This is the season for color. Burgundy, wine, plum, forest green, teal, navy, chocolate brown, aubergine, and deep sapphire all feel right at home at a fall wedding. If jewel tones flatter your complexion, you have plenty of options.
And yes, you can wear black to a wedding. That old rule has gone by the wayside. I like black even more for an evening wedding when it’s paired with interesting texture, beautiful jewelry, or a wrap that keeps it from looking like you’re headed to a business dinner.
However, I still highly recommend avoiding white, ivory, cream, and anything so pale that it could photograph as white. I also wouldn’t wear the same color as the bridal party if I knew in advance. (There’s nothing wrong with asking!)
Beyond that, don’t get too hung up on color rules. If orange makes you look ill, you don’t need to wear it simply because someone has scattered pumpkins around the venue.

Fall Wedding Guest Dresses with Sleeves
Sleeves are often high on my must-have list for a fall wedding. They give you more coverage without fussing with an extra layer all evening, and they make sense once the temperatures begin to drop.
If you can’t or don’t want to wear heels, a full-length dress covers your footwear so you can stay comfy and stylish. Plus, a higher neckline means you can get away with less jewelry and accessories.
Fall Wedding Guest Dresses with Short Sleeves
The short sleeves can be a nice middle ground for a fall wedding. You get a bit more coverage than a sleeveless dress, but you’re not committing to long sleeves if the ceremony is outdoors and the afternoon is still warm.

Sleeveless Fall Wedding Guest Dresses
If you live in a milder climate or are attending a wedding in a location with warm fall weather, a sleeveless dress can be a wonderful option if you’re comfortable showing your arms. You can also bring a wrap, blazer, or dressier jacket for a chilly night or if the venue has its air conditioner blasting.
This Antonio Melani Organza maxi is for the woman who doesn’t want another fitted wedding dress. The shift silhouette falls away from the body, and the sheer organza adds movement without ruffles, beading, or fuss.

What to Wear Over a Wedding Guest Dress
The temperature inside a wedding venue can bear no resemblance to the temperature outside. I’ve been in chilly ballrooms in August and overheated rooms when it was freezing outdoors… so I like having a layer I can take off.
A wrap or shawl is the easiest choice for formal and black tie dresses because it doesn’t interfere with the lines of the dress. Cashmere, silk, velvet, or a dressy woven fabric looks intentional, not like you grabbed something on the way out the door.
A blazer works well over a simpler cocktail or semi-formal dress. I prefer one with a clean shape and enough room through the shoulders that it doesn’t bunch the dress underneath.
A cardigan can work too, but fabric and proportion matter. A fine-gauge cropped cardigan over a simple midi dress can look polished, while a long everyday cardigan tossed over a cocktail dress usually looks like… a long everyday cardigan tossed over a cocktail dress.
Fall Wedding Guest Dresses for Petites
Petite sizing isn’t simply about making a dress shorter. The waist, armholes, neckline, sleeves, and overall proportions should be adjusted, too, which is why I look for an actual petite version whenever I can.
On a maxi or midi dress, pay particular attention to where the waist hits. If the dress’s natural waist sits closer to your hips, hem alterations won’t fix the real problem.
I’d also watch the volume. Lots of tiers, oversized sleeves, and yards of fabric can overwhelm a petite frame. That doesn’t mean petites can’t wear any of those things… we can. I just want the dress to arrive in the room when I do, not five minutes earlier.
Fall Wedding Guest Dress FAQs
Does a bolero or shrug look dated?
It can. If yours looks like an obvious add-on whose only purpose is covering your upper arms, I’d choose something else.
A modern cropped jacket, fine-gauge cardigan, or beautiful wrap gives you the same coverage and looks more current. The difference is that it should look like part of the outfit, not something you’re just throwing on.
How do I look polished without looking like mother of the bride?
A matching dress-and-jacket set or a gown with head-to-toe beading can be lovely for a wedding guest. The trouble starts when every accessory comes from the “special occasion” department too: satin shoes, a sparkly clutch, and formal jewelry all at once. That can make the outfit feel more like a mother-of-the-bride than a wedding guest.
I like to let one part of the outfit do the talking. If the dress has sequins or beading, I’d keep the accessories simpler. If the dress is plain, bring out the lavish earrings.
What can I wear to a wedding if I can’t wear heels?
Flats. Truly. There are too many stunning pairs of flats, low block heels, kitten heels, and dressy loafers out there for us to spend an evening in shoes that hurt. For a formal wedding, a pointed-toe flat or embellished flat looks dressier than an everyday ballet flat. A full-length gown also lets you wear a very comfortable shoe without making it the focus of the outfit.
Whatever you choose, make sure you’ve worn the shoes before the wedding. A reception is a terrible place to discover that the “comfortable” shoes you bought are only comfortable for a few minutes.
Which Fall Wedding Dress Would You Wear?
Wedding guest dressing gets easier when we stop trying to follow every supposed rule. The occasion matters, but so do our proportions and whether we’ll be comfortable for the whole celebration.
What are you wearing to fall weddings this year? Are you reaching for sleeves and jewel tones, or do you still prefer a sleeveless dress with a wrap? I’d love to hear in the comments.

I always love your “What to Wear” guides! I could use your advice on a bit of a fashion challenge. I’m attending a beach wedding in Cancun in early November, and no dress code has been provided. I checked the November weather for Cancun – 80 F with cooler evenings. I have a flowy, short-sleeved white midi dress with dark periwinkle splashes that I love and wore to a spring event, but I’m not sure if it works for a fall wedding. I’m cold natured so I’ll need to plan accordingly. Any suggestions?
I think your dress sounds perfect Deb. Splashes of color on white would be lovely in Mexico.
My daughter in law uses Rent the Runway and a simulator company for special occasion and cocktail dresses. They now have extended sizes and they’re not all super fancy.
That’s a great idea, Susan
I’m sorry, but most of these look like “uniforms” to me. I would wear a simple dress in a nice fabric and suitable color that I could wear for multiple occasions.
Jennifer, that blue Karen Kane dress is drop-dead GORGEOUS on you. It looks like it was “made for you”. I loved the purple Alex evening dress too; I wore a very similar one in navy to a New Year’s Eve wedding and I loved it. But I just had to comment on the blue one. It is stunning!
Thanks for all the wonderful fashion advice you give to all of us! Always, “spot-on”!
Thanks Anne
The navy blue lace dress looks AMAZING on you!
Thanks, that was a few years ago, which makes a big difference at this age
Great selections. My favorite look on you is the Karen Kane.
I’m a fan of statement shoes so Id say, for all of these, add fabulous shoes.
I’m wearing my mother of the groom dress in early November to what has been described as a formal late afternoon wedding requiring full length gowns. My dress hits just below my knees but I think I will be just fine in it. It’s a Teri Jon navy lace shirt waist with a 3/4 length sleeve and diamond buttons and I’ve now had a chance to wear it three other times besides our son’s wedding. I love the dress and it’s totally me. For our son’s wedding I wore beige kitten heels but for the other weddings I wore a pair of metallic ballet flats that work perfectly with my dress and feet! I think it’s a bit presumptuous to ask your guests to wear full length gowns. Just how many older women have one in their closet or would be able to wear it again if they bought one.
I love the sound of your dress!
I am wearing a long sheer intricately patterned over black slip elastic waist skirt from my closet. In the past I have worn it with a black t shirt or sweater and ankle boots or sandals. This time I am wearing it with a new deep blue Eileen Fisher patterned silk jacquard boxy top and flats. I am excited about the outfit because it looks good and I know that pricey Eileen Fischer top will also look good casually with jeans for a night out
That’s a gem of a skirt. I like how you think. It sounds like a fabulous outfit. I have a very old polyester and tulle skirt that serves the same role in my wardrobe. I love it.
I’m not using my clothing budget for something I’ll wear once, so I’ll hit my closet. I have some EF silk tank dresses, one crinkle (blurple) and one smooth (hot pink). They are great for many occasions depending on the wrap/jacket/shoes/accessories I choose. Done. Really no one cares what guests wear. I think we over think the wedding attire thing. And yes, Chicos, finally!! And with some great colors for winters! So excited to see the purple creeping in different places! I love my burgundy and dark cool green but I have a lot in those colors.
Your colors are everywhere this fall Shari! I wish more of mine were. I was so delighted to see the long sleeves at Chicos because their no iron shirts are one of the best.
What an excellent post ,as always Jenifer. It is a very helpful guide.I prefer sleeveless dress with a wrap for this season.
In my mind, a lovely wrap can elevate everything.
We are the same age and I have a 50th class reunion to attend in September. Not a formal event to be sure, but do you have any thoughts on how to look stylish and casual at the same time?
Depending on the venue, I would aim for polished casual. Be sure to add an accessorry or two that make a statement about you.
What a wonderful array of dresses! I love that you’re showing so many different styles.
Unfortunately, no weddings or events this fall!
I’m attending a wedding this Friday night. I find special occasion dresses “difficult”. Everything I tried looked too cheap, too casual, or too mother of the bride. I decided to go for a tuxedo look with pieces I already own; silk blouse, black pants and great heels.
That’s a fabulous look Lily!
Love this !!! Also love a “lady tux!”
I wore that Eileen Fisher dress in geranium to my niece’s wedding in Charlotte this past June. Perfect for travel – tie it up in a knot and throw it in the bag. No wrinkles, no worries. It was amazing in the hot weather and the power outage that had us out on the patio of the inn for the reception. Very light and comfortable.
I agree, it’s a perfect dress. I wore my blue one to my sons wedding and was comfy outdoors in temps hovering around the low 90s!
I’ve loved the look of the EF crushed silk dress and skirt but have been hesitant to buy it because some of the reviews say that after time the “crushed” effect softens out and by the end of the night they feel like they are in a big bag. I’d love to hear from you on this.
Anne
That has never happened with mine and I’ve worn it a ton!
