Monday Musings: Fraxel, Floods, and the Canadian Tuxedo Debate

Happy Monday, ladies. I hope the weekend treated you gently and gave you at least one good laugh—or at the very least, a piece of chocolate.

Similar paperclip necklace

My own birthday last week was… let’s just say, memorable. It began with my physical therapist working me over (they call it “manual therapy,” I call it sanctioned face-pummeling). I’m still faithfully scraping away with my gua sha in the hopes of loosening what feels like a jaw carved from granite. Add in a washing machine that decided to flood the apartment, plus a couple of unexpected family health curveballs, and the day felt a little less “Happy Birthday” and a little more “Are you kidding me?”

But my family rallied. They took me out, made me feel celebrated, and yes—chocolate was involved. That part made everything a bit softer around the edges.

Fraxel and the “Muzzle”

I also had a Fraxel laser treatment last week. My dermatologist casually referred to the area we’re treating as “my muzzle.” I nearly snorted tea across the room. Technically, she’s not wrong—it’s the space around the mouth—but still. Nothing like being compared to a schnauzer while lying under a laser.

There are those earrings again

We’re targeting solar elastosis, the sun damage from my carefree younger years when sunscreen was optional. The saving grace has been my daughter’s ice roller, which she keeps tucked in the freezer. I’ve borrowed it so often it’s basically mine now. Honestly, it’s the only thing keeping my face from looking like I spent the weekend in a boxing ring. Puffy? Absolutely. Close-up ready? Not yet.

Home Decorating Adventures

Meanwhile, decorating continues for my daughter’s home. She finally chose a beautiful chandelier she loves and a set of handwoven rattan arm chairs with a European cafe vibe… to pair with the antique table she found months ago. These chairs are gorgeous– a Danish/Japanese design from Sika that she has been keeping an eye on for a while. They go very well with this gorgeous French vintage-inspired mirror she has had for several years. We’ve been musing a lot about how to mix antique and modern pieces so her home feels elegant, modern, and just eclectic enough to be interesting. I’d love your take—do you enjoy blending old with new, or do you prefer a single style carried throughout a space?

The Canadian Tuxedo Debate

And finally—outfit controversy. I wore denim on denim the other day. The full Canadian tuxedo. Now, I actually like the look. Done well, I think it feels polished and modern. But something about my version just didn’t land, and I can’t quite put my finger on why.

Blue Sneakers / Straight leg jeans / Similar Oversized denim jacket / shoulder bag

Maybe the washes were too close, maybe the proportions were off—who knows. I have my suspicions, but I’d love to hear yours. Do you wear double denim? And if you do, what makes it work for you?

Be honest, but please—be kind.

What about you—did your week hold any surprises, big or small? And where do you land on mixing antique with modern—or the Canadian tuxedo?

  1. Happy very, very, very belated birthday! As a new subscriber I am late to reply. I love a common theme with old mixed in, it creates so much more interest and character to a home. I have 100 year old brown salt crocks from my grandmother sitting in our rattan bar cart and I absolutely love how they look. I really like the canadian tuxedo because you did the unexpected and brought in the same tones of blue in the shirt and in the cute shoes. The jean jacket is a little bit long but I still like it!

  2. Enjoyed all the subjects addressed here, Jennifer. As far as the denim “tuxedo” goes, here are my thoughts. There are differing elements of casualness in the denim and outfit as a whole. The jacket is more tailored and the jeans appear to be more casual with the soft wrinkles. Your handbag is tailored and somewhat refined. The sneakers are very casual. The jersey should be white or off-white or a color that enhances. Change jeans or jacket to the same level of refinement, along with your footwear and shoulder bag. Your shoulder bag could tie in your footwear or jersey/blouse.

You had me howling about the muzzle and feeling like a schnauzer ! I’ve had the treatment and schnauzers! I’d switch the blue t shirt for a white button up shirt with cuffs folded up over the jacket cuffs and a different shoe.

  4. Sue Lewellen says:

Awwwww! I thought denim on denim was a “Texas tuxedo”! It’s a mainstay in my wardrobe.

    1. I think it has lots of names 🥰

  5. I love your daughter’s decorating, looks both elegant and comfortable!

  6. I agree with everyone who said the shirt is what throws it off. I would have gone with a white top and also the bag doesn’t work to my eye. I would have gone with a more casual bag that is not 2 toned. The bag kind of competes with the shoes and clashes.

  7. Hi Jennifer,
Here we are, thankfully in a new week. I broke my leg at the end of the week before and have been dealing with some complications and how to deal with this while living alone. It’s going to be a long 6-8 weeks in my little place. I appreciate the couple of friends who have gone out of their way to visit.
I like the mixture of carefully curated older and new furniture which give your daughter’s place personality. It looks clean yet interesting.
The blue-on-blue denim look isn’t bad. I would change the blue shirt for white or cream to pick up the light color on the sneakers.
Thanks as always for sharing your ideas and life with us. We are all in this together.

    1. Oh Lisa, I’m so sorry about your leg. That’s painful. I hope you have some books and at the very least can binge watch some Netflix or other shows to pass the time. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Take care of yourself.

  8. I do wear denim on denim also. My original thought was that the jacket could have been more fitted with that style of jeans. And maybe a necklace or scarf to add some interest? I know I can look in the mirror and think something looks great. And then I see a picture of myself in the outfit and wonder what I was thinking? (lol)

  9. Cheryl A. says:

Happy belated birthday Jennifer! You always look so fashionable and hate to try and improve one of your curated outfits. I think what may be off is too much of all the same color. Monochromatic works well except with the denim. Maybe white sneakers or luggage brown shoes and purse and white tee would help. I think a shorter jacket would enhance your gorgeous figure. Key is that you feel good and confident. That is what matters! .

    1. Thanks so much Cheryl

  10. Beth Crawford says:

Happy Birthday, I’m glad it turned out ok in the end.
If it were me I would wear a white tee shirt and white tennis shoes, a long ish necklace and a broach on the jacket. BUT, that’s just me, I think you always look great. That’s just another option.
The other thing I would try is to not have everything the same color unless they were exactly the same or vastly different. 🤷‍♀️

  11. Nancy Toney says:

    Jennifer,
I have never heard the all denim look referred as the Canadian Tuxedo, it’s always the Tennessee Tuxedo. Funny how these things get started.
Your daughter has good taste, love the chandelier with the table and chairs. I like a collected look for my house, I buy what I love, and it all works.
    Love your blog.
    Nancy T.

  12. Those chairs are fabulous. I especially like them with the table in the same tone but different styles. I like your Canadian tuxedo. It might seem off because the loose blue tee and pants are too similar. A crisper top or shirt in another color or print would look better by giving it some contrast.

  13. Hi Jennifer,
Happy birthday! Every birthday you have and every day you wake up is a good day, with or without chocolate, but mostly with!
I am wondering if the denim jacket might be too big for the look? Or if perhaps a less relaxed jean with the jacket would give the look a little more oomph?

  14. Happy Birthday and love your stories…..life.
I read some of the comments and I’m going to suggest a simple black tee (instead of white) to offset the blue denim and a pair of black sandles/flats (if you wanted really casual, then black sneaks), black purse and some silver jewelry and layer the jewelry on even for daytime.

  15. I never heard the term Canadian tuxedo until I moved to California from NY 7 years ago; I think denim on denim is more of a north west thing. I agree that there is too much blue but I think the proportions are all off. The pants are too baggy and the jacket not fitted. Since you asked, I will comment on the sneakers. I just bought my 13 year old granddaughter the same style. My choice would be a neutral color in a comfy slip on. I’m 74 living in Southern California and never wear denim like this; one piece at a time is better.

  16. A few thoughts on the denim tuxedo, I like a matching tone top with a jacket, so maybe white jeans would have given the outfit a bit more pop. And I love the shoulder bag, so my other thought was to cowboy(girl) up and add a small neck scarf, perhaps a different tee, maybe more of a bootcut jean, and leather belt and or shoes. Sounds more like a fall outfit! And if you needed a more casual sport or boating outfit, throw a striped sweater over your shoulders and bring the jacket if it cools down! Hmmm, I may have to try some of these lol!!
Happy Belated Birthday, sending healing thoughts your way!

  17. Outfit looks nice, but maybe a different color of tee. Also, love your daughters area rug.

  18. Liz Jennings says:

I am really enjoying your emails! I found you wandering the interwebs. I have shared your newsletter with a friend, who really appreciates you featuring direct links to the fashion websites.
Your Canadian tuxedo jacket might be too long?
Good luck with the facial recovery!

    1. Welcome Liz, and thanks!

  19. Happy Birthday, Jennifer! I love those earrings, and they look terrific on you. They may become my Christmas present . . . .
I agree about the Canadian tuxedo. I think perhaps it’s a little too much blue, all in the same intensity. Perhaps a lighter-toned, grey-blue t-shirt with three-quarter sleeves that don’t show below the jacket cuffs for a cleaner look, and contrasting shoes would break it up a little? I like the medium washes and I love the color of the t-shirt and shoes, but they are all so similar.
I love a mix of new and old pieces for home decor, but I don’t know if I can pull it off myself. Your daughter’s furniture looks great!

  20. Jeanne Bayley says:

    Both are great denim pieces.
I would try a white T tucked in break up the column look.

  21. Carolyn W says:

I like all the blue because it makes your eyes pop, perhaps if you wore a large necklace that had other colors mixed with the blue.

  22. I love mixing old & new furniture & accessories- I feel like it makes for a more interesting home. Your daughter’s chairs, table chandelier is chefs kiss in my opinion!
I enjoy your blog so much – great fashion, thoughtful commentary & I enjoy your spunkiness. I am not a big fan of the Canadian tuxedo look but as an amateur, I’d like to see a boot cut Jean in a little darker wash, booties, a white top, a belt & the sleeves of the jacket pushed or rolled to more of a 3/4 length so that some skin shows. White top – tee with a necklace, or button up with enough buttons undone to show skin.
You always look terrific & I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts on this!

  23. The colors are great in the tuxedo look but too plaIn for you, normally you have a chain to breakup the center line. I am thinking of moving my birthday because every year for the last couple of years I have gotten sick. Mine is also in August. I am excited waiting for my earrings to arrive.

    1. I love the idea of moving your birthday Janice! Smart lady

  24. A few years ago I went to the dermatologist because I had a rash around my mouth and the sides of my nose. The diagnosis? Muzzle mouth! My sister found it funnier than I did, but after we finished our wine I could laugh about it. Although it was annoying that my husband would bark whenever I came in the room. I hope your face will be feeling better soon, and that the results are what you hoped for.

  25. I mix old and new furniture pieces. I think the Canadian tuxedo look would have worked better with a different color shirt and shoes. Maybe a white or red shirt and white sneakers or tan loafers. It was just too blue.

  26. I love the idea of the outfit, perhaps if the jacket is slouchy, the jeans shouldn’t be or vice versa. White or navy leather sneakers would finish the look .
    Sandra

  27. Happy Belated Birthday! Im sorry about the mishaps, but thank goodness for family and chocolate! Thank you for sharing your treatment process and hope you are happy with the final results. I wear denim on denim but I usually like two items, one light wash with a darker wash. Sometimes with a blue purse but different shoes. You look cute as always but I think a different t-shirt color or print would be more interesting. I love your daughter’s room! I like minimalist but I like the eclectic look of adding different pieces. And houseplants! Also love the shoes she got that you shared-I got them too and think they are great. Have a better week!

  28. Jennifer
Your daughter’s apartment is looking darling! As you know I have had fraxel as well but should have done more treatments!

    1. I was inspired by you!

  29. Happy Birthday !! I had a big one last week also,,which included chocolate mouse pie,,, your daughters home is gorgeous….as for the denim, I like your look..when I go full out denim, I try to wear a white t-shirt, or tank, just to break it up, I know that negates the idea, but white softens the look, or maybe your t-shirt should be in a lighter blue tone. Still you look great…
Have a wonderful week. It’s beautiful in the Bay Area……

  30. Leigh Miller says:

I like the jeans and jacket – but I think some colour change in the t-shirt and sneakers would be a better choice! Give it a little punch of colour!

  31. Happy belated birthday! Chocolate makes everything a little easier to take. I hope your face is less painful and muzzle should never be used when talking about a human face. It is offensive! I love you daughter’s interior design esthetic. I do love old and new mixed. As for the denim on denim look it took me a few minutes but I agree with other readers that a white shirt or a different colored shirt and different shoes would have made you happier with your look. It is very casual and comfortable looking and blue is a beautiful color on you. Try some small fixes and snap a photo for us. I actually love and wear denim on denim a lot in cooler weather. It arrived today! Only 67 degrees when we did our dog walk today! Yay!

    1. Thanks Sydney. That’s a lovely temperature

  32. Lynnefred says:

I agree with most that the outfit has too much blue. I’d change the tee out for a pop of color. Someone suggested a white tee, and that would work too. Maybe a necklace would add some interest. The rest of the outfit is fine for everyday casual. I do think you look comfortable and youthful. Happy Birthday! Wishing you a year of adventure and less stress.

    1. Thank you so much! Less stress would be lovely 🙂

  33. Happy Birthday!!! Each year brings different unexpected challenges!!!
You look great as is in this denim outfit. Some great tips offered but not necessarily for you, it’s for themselves!!!

  34. Kathleen O'Brien says:

Your daughters decorating style is beautiful. I’m a fan of the collected look, so warm and welcoming.
I’m also a fan of the Canadian tuxedo, but many times mine comes off as a little too matchy-matchy. That might be the issue here, possibly change it up with the shirt and shoes not all being so close in color. But, I’ve got to say you still look put together and attractive.

  35. My decor is truly eclectic, things I love no matter the style as long as they blend together. A always there piece is a vintage oak drop leaf side table I snagged at a yard sale for $75. I am not in tune with you today on clothing styles. Maybe the kaftan needs to be seen to appreciate. I think your blue on blue might work with as little a tween as a brightly colored scarf at the neck

  36. Happy birthday! Hope you’re improving from fraxel. I’d like to hear more about it.
As to the tuxedo…..maybe start with changing the top. White shirt? Collar popped? Different shoe color? Maybe even consider cuffing the jean. Perhaps that might help offset the longer, relaxed jacket.
And I like the suggestion that you show/post versions of the outfit as you work through various iterations. I’m curious to see what you like and feel works for you. It would be a good learning experience, imo!

    1. Thanks Linda, great idea

  37. Happy Birthday Jennifer and cheers to many, many more. I love the mix of antique with modern and your daughter certainly has a flair for it.
Wishing you speedy healing from your treatment. Have a great week.

    1. Thanks so much Yvonne!

  38. Happy Belated Birthday, Jennifer!

  39. Happy Birthday!
You always look great. My favorite posts are the ones showing your daily outfits.

I like the matchy matchy Canadian tux on you. One thought — I always include black in the look… either black denim or a black T shirt and/or sneakers. Perhaps that might be enough of a change for you to like it more.

  40. Happy Birthday!🎂
The above tee suggestions were my thoughts. Possibly a colorful scarf. Show a little more of your wrist with a trendy bracelet. Even a scarf on your handbag would be lovely.
A muzzle on my goodness…. I might have said woof woof to that comment just to be funny!
Hopefully your day will be much better. You still have the rest of the week to celebrate your birthday. I always call it a Birthday Month!
    Love your blog!

  41. I see what you mean about your Canadian tuxedo but it’s not a total fail in my book. As another mentioned, I’d switch to a white shirt. And, I’d have either the jacket or the pants closer fitting. I’d have more contrast in the wash also mentioned by another. I love wearing my Canadian tux but also feel like there’s something I could do better with the look. I really love my jean jacket but never know the best pants to wear with it. Tailored pants or leggings are not the answer so I just throw on jeans.Quick funny story: I recently flew from Toronto to Calgary wearing my Canadian tuxedo knowing I hadn’t quite nailed it. As I made my way to my seat, the flight attendant inside the cabin greeted me with a “Howdy”! Haha! I’m from an American east coast metropolis! I guess I’ve arrived!

Your daughter’s place looks fantastic. She nailed blending different style furniture. Elegant is the first word that comes to my mind.

Love your newsletter. Thanks for doing it.

  42. Elizabeth says:

I’m a Canadian and I love the Canadian Tuxedo look, so there’s that! 😊. With regard to your denim look, I think perhaps the washes are too similar. Try mixing a dark wash with a mid- or pale-wash and adding a pop of colour – or even just white – with the tee. Footwear? I’d go with brown or black in a classic loafer. Regardless of my suggestions, you always look fabulous, Jennifer. I do so love to read your blog each day!

  43. I’m wearing almost exactly the same outfit today. Only difference, a classic white tee. I love denim. Where do these arbitrary rules come from? Why do we listen to them?

  44. Kate Gale says:

I agree with everyone who mentioned a lighter color t-shirt for the “tuxedo” outfit. White would be a nice little spark! It’s taken me awhile to not be matchy-matchy with my denims, so I thought the outfit looked great otherwise. Really like that jacket!

  45. Pat Englund says:

Happy Birthday!! I hope you have a wonderful year.
I love your daughter’s design. I also enjoy mixing things up. Elegant but comfortable and a reflection of personal style!
As for the monochromatic/column denim outfit, I think the jeans are too baggy and could be slimmer. I think I would feel a bit frumpy. More of a scoop neck T would break up the all blue and be more interesting. The blue shoes are optional.

  46. Bonita Gillespie says:

    Hi Jennifer
I think you always look wonderful.!I am Canadian and I think what may help your outfit is either changing the shades of the blues ( as the value of the three pieces are very close) or breaking it up with a
Different T-shirt, either patterned or just a different color. Hope that helps. Keep up the good work I enjoy your posts!

  47. Janice in Ky says:

Happy Birthday 🎂 A different color tee or white shirt, I know you aren’t really into patterned tops but a small print with some color would be cute. My first thought was too much blue, different color and style shoes. The jeans appear a little too relaxed for my taste. Need a little more contrast in the colors.

  48. Me in NorCal says:

    Happy, Happy Birthday!!
I hope you have a wonderful year filled with good health, laughter & love.
I would like to know what you do to not have 11 wrinkles between the eyebrows.
    Soon to become a grandma.

    1. Thank you! Botox. I’ve been testing those 11s every 6-8 months for years!

  49. retro-roost says:

Your daughter has exquisite taste in decor. The mixture of vintage with new is always beautiful. The silhouette of her new dining chairs is gorgeous, particularly paired with the vintage dining table. Design over time is always successful compared to a space with all new items that mostly has a lack character. I would love to see additional photos as she continues her decor adventure. Thank you for sharing her beautiful space.

    1. I think she does too. Thanks!

  50. Maybe it’s too casual. Perhaps a dressier pair of jeans or a more tailored jacket.

  51. Happy birthday! The denim on denim isn’t bad, just sort of blah for you. Definitely a different shirt / maybe a teal or burgundy for fall! In a perfect world, a cropped jacket would also give a more polished look. And perhaps a different purse, again something with color?

  52. Jennifer, I love your articles! As for this outfit, I see you in a different top (perhaps white with a stand up collar), slim or skinny jeans and flats, not sneakers. You’re always stylish!

  53. Patricia Alesso says:

    Jennifer, you are a treasure!
Denim washes are too close; and a different color, texture for the top, different shoe choice, perhaps. The jacket is a classic, of course!
Your daughter’s choices for her home are wonderful!

  54. Hi Jennifer, Happy Birthday! Thank you for sharing your week’s adventures with us. My skin is sun damaged also from my youthful days with hit or miss sunscreen, but I’m at the point where I’m trying to find a dermatologist who I want to work with – that “muzzle” comment is priceless 🙂 Your daughter’s home is very lovely and calm looking – I love the mix of old and new. As far as your outfit, I see that you have a lot of good comments, and I’ll just echo that I can’t wear a denim jacket with a round neck t-shirt unless the neckline is a bit lower – but I usually prefer a v-neck. But this is splitting hairs because the outfit is still very nice. Enjoy the last week of your birthday month!

  55. Hello Jennifer,
I actually wear a denim jacket with denim jeans. I didn’t know it had a name. I can see that you were going for a column of color. For me, the top was the piece that wasn’t working. I enjoy reading about how you put your outfits together.

  56. First off, another “trip around the sun” is always something to celebrate! Sorry that a few things brought frustration into “your day”.

I don’t think your outfit is a “fail” but maybe (1) different color shoes (I was thinking red) and/or (2) a more prominent necklace, maybe in silver tone because of the buttons on the jacket? Or (3) a printed scarf to break up all the solid blue? Thank you for asking, it was a fun exercise in creativity!

Good luck with your laser treatment. A number of years ago I attended a family gathering and even from across the room I saw that a relative looked great! I thought maybe she had a make-up makeover (she liked to do that from time to time). I didn’t ask but she told me she had laser treatment on her face. She was (still is) an attractive woman and the treatment took years off her face.

  57. Well Jennifer in my humble opinion it’s too much blue. Maybe a white shirt would do the trick. Try that and let us know

  58. I love the denim on denim look on you,but I think the look needs to be broken up with a gold or silver necklace,or maybe a colorful neck scarf.
I would add a colorful bracelet and different colored tennis shoes. I agree with one of the first readers,to show the outfit again with suggested changes that you feel comfortable with! 🥰

  59. I think the blues in the jacket/jeans are a little too similiar. The shoes could have used a white sneaker pop, IMO. Her apt. is adorable and SO very interesting. She just needs to f7rnish with the things that she loves and wants to be surrounded by. That is what makes a home ‘her home’. Enjoy the process and take great care of yourself.❤️

    1. Yes! I told her to buy the individual pieces she loves and it will all come together…and it is.

  60. The jeans should be narrower, or the jacket should be shorter. And I don’t think the sneakers work, regardless.

  61. That dining set is gorgeous. I love mixing vintage with contemporary, traditional or even country. I really like your denim on denim look except maybe just too much blue. A white tee would have made all the difference. I really like your trainers!

  62. Dear Jennifer,

Happy Belated Birthday. I love the mix of antiques and new furnniture in your daughter’s home. It’s lovely.

I hope you’ll be pleased with your Fraxel results.

  63. Happy Birthday! Lovely shades of blue on you. I think different shoe color and i would roll/push up sleeves to give little break of color. I can’t do denim on denim due to memories of a guy i worked with…..lol. But i love it on others.

  64. Hi Jennifer,
I really enjoy reading your blog. You truly give me inspiration! As a fellow Canadian, I love a Canadian Tuxedo look as well. Perhaps a white coloured top and a darker coloured denim pant would be worth a try – you never know!! Your daughter’s apartment is beautiful and stylish!

  65. Happy birthday anyway! I too have been liking the double denim on others, which shocks me since I hated it back in the day. While I don’t think you look bad in the outfit, I feel as if a darker wash in either the jeans or the jacket, and perhaps a slimmer fit in the jeans, would elevate the look and make it sleeker. As is, it’s got more of a going apple-picking or light hiking style than street style, if that makes sense? You could also try loafers instead of the sneakers, though the tone on tone is nice in itself.

    1. It makes total sense 😉

  66. Happy Belated Birthday, Jennifer🎉 Your daughter has a good eye for mixing old with new. I think it all works beautifully. The denim tuxedo…I think you put it together very well. If it felt off to you, maybe it was the blue tee. I think it would really pop with a white tee and your classy Paul Green white sneakers.

    1. Thanks Janette. Her condo is looking so pretty.

  67. I love those blue sneakers, but I think maybe a cropped denim jacket would have worked better with you outfit? Happy belated Birthday!

  68. So sorry about washer. I always worry about that happening so never leave with it running. It did happen to good friend. I like your outfit.

  69. Hi Jennifer, I agree with the others that a contrasting T-shirt would be better with the Canadian Tuxedo and perhaps a scoop neck would soften the Tom-boyish look and why not add a light chain necklace too. My other comment is the jean jacket, to me, looks too masculine because it’s boxy. Just my opinion. I have a pet peave with the “classic” jean jacket design, because they all draw attention to the bust line with the breast pockets. I don’t know about you but I don’t want more attention on my larger bust! 😂

  70. Jennifer, first, belated Happy Birthday !🎂
Your column and musings are a great way to start my day, like touching base with a friend, and very refreshing that you post unfiltered photos!
With regard to the Canadian tux, I think the shoes bring the look down and would like to see something like a neutral loafer or a white leather tennis shoe. I also think a white top would be better than the blue, and add that cute paper clip necklace!
    Cheers!

  71. L. Roberts says:

    Happy Birthday Jennifer!
I agree with Jennifer H. In WA., the outfit is casually cute but the shoes make it a bit too casual!
    Thanks for sharing your style!

  72. Darlene Bright says:

Happy Belated Birthday! Sounds like you had an eventful week! I am loving your daughter’s decorating adventures. I love to mix old with new. I think maybe your Jean washes are too close & maybe a different color tee too. I hope this week is better for you.

    1. Thank you Darlene. Happy Monday.

  73. Janis Falk says:

Tuxedo outfit: my suggestion would be a darker wash jacket, white or cream shirt and either white or cream sneakers.

  74. Darlene Hegel says:

I don’t do double denim as I can never get it to look right. Your daughter’s chandelier and rattan chairs are beautiful and the chairs look made for the antique table. My house is styled with a mix of vintage pieces. We are a gathering place here so I have three tables – a vintage small center drop leaf table that has been refinished to sit edged to my modern kitchen island, a round handmade wooden table from the 1920’s in a light tone and a Mediterranean trestle table in walnut in the dining room. I then pull it together with modern accents such as lighting, lamps, chairs sometimes. I like storied pieces and it makes for a comfy home. I read your blog everyday and enjoy all the topics you include. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing with us!

    1. Your place sounds wonderful!

  75. I think it’s the t-shirt, Jennifer

  76. Diane Ragot says:

To me the Canadian denim tuxedo did not click and after while I realized that It needed a white T-shirt Love your mail

  77. Jennifer Holcomb says:

    Hi Jennifer,
I really like the blending of all the blue hues including your top. I would so do this look. The only thing I would change would be the shoes. I would do a dressier shoe to make it less casual looking. Oh and a cool brooch on the jacket. It still looks great on you. Thank you for all of your advice and tips. I look forward to my coffee time in the morning reading your blog. Jennifer Holcomb Port Angeles, WA.

  78. I think your assessment is right on – perhaps the denim washes were too close. I can see this look with a dark wash denim jean on the bottom. Then perhaps ditch the blue sneakers and checkered bag. White sneakers and light tan suede bag instead? You always look great, Jennifer, but with a few tweaks, I think you could make this outfit work better for you. Now to analyze some of my outfits!

  79. Beth Henson says:

Wear a different colored shirt-I like a long tee shirt or a slightly fitted tunic that peeks out from under the jacket with my denim. And wear a long necklace. That breaks up the denim and adds some color to your look, I wear double denim a lot and do that because the denim just blends in together and doesn’t look interesting!

  80. I have tried denim with denim with limited success. Kind of like it when the denim colors are different. One a dark wash, the other a lighter wash. Makes me feel better about it. Think maybe if your jacket were not oversized it would have worked better? The answer often varies on body type, the vibe you are trying to achieve etc. Honestly, it was not that awful. Sometimes even a different tee shirt might make a difference. We certainly all have had epic fails. Wear what makes you feel good! If it doesn’t work-try again!

  81. My guess is that it is a more masculine look. The jacket is very straight and a little oversized and the jeans are also a loose cut. Maybe a pop of color in the shirt would help? But, I think it is mainly the cut of the jacket.

  82. suzanstew says:

Would’ve looked better with shoes that didn’t match so well. I envy those sneakers but not ready to spend so much for Paul Green shoes.

  83. The denim pieces are great, maybe it’s the blue tee. Try with another color!

  84. I rarely wear denim on denim. I will wear a chambray shirt with blue jeans, however.
Concerning what’s “off” with your outfit, could it be that there is no contrast? Everything seems to be a similar shade of blue.
I have learned so much from your posts, thank you!

  85. Happy Birthday Jennifer! Your face will be lovely once everything heals, sorry it has been so hard to deal with. Sorry the washer flooded apartment. You need a rest I think.

I only do all denim, if it is a dress. I think denim jumpsuits might look good. A tucked in denim shirt with a red belt and a cute neck scarf would look nice , with cute flats.

    1. I do feel the need for a rest! It was quite a week.

  86. Sharon K. says:

Good morning, Jennifer, hope you’re recovering well from the Fraxel. RE: the denim, I’m thinking the blues are too close in shade without matching? Maybe a lighter tee, off-white, gray or silvery, and the pants are a bit long. But I do love the denim on denim look so I’ll watch for the hazards myself. And I also bought those tan suede Vince trainers from your link a couple of weeks ago and I love them too! Comfortable, sleek, and cool looking at a great price. Then I bought a suede cleaning kit from Amazon to hopefully keep them nice.

    1. Thanks. So far so good on the face. They’re great sneakers!! I love mine too.

  87. Stephanie says:

I normally like a monochromatic look, but I think the denim outfit would look better with a bigger contrast between the colors of denim. Maybe a dark wash jacket with light wash jeans? I really like the color of the t-shirt and sneakers.

  88. I love the European style mix of furniture. Well done.
. Your outfit of double denim, is all matte, and all one colorway, maybe a bit of texture or color addition could help?

  89. Happy belated birthday. Love, love your daughter’s home. Soon as I spied the chairs, knew they were Sika. Mixing antiques with modern makes the home look collected over time and gives it personality. Looking at your denim on denim I did think it was the washes, I also feel that maybe your top under the denim jacket needed to be a different colour. I hope your week has improved.

    1. Thank you Rita. I adore her new chairs.

  90. Rebecca (becky) Emery says:

You always look so lovely. In this case with the double denim, I think rolling up the T-shirt sleeves so you see more of your wrist – more skin – would be helpful. Or a more fitted T-shirt and maybe a different color. But it’s really not all that bad. Great shade of blues.

  91. Hi Jennifer-Canadian tuxedo-white tee and white sneakers or black and black IMHO would have been a bit better. I like the matching denim washes. You are terrific. Thank you.

  92. I would like to see what this outfit would look like with a larger purse in a brown shade (saddle or cognac maybe?) and a shoe that would coordinate with the purse. If that does not land, I would like to see what it would look like with a different colored tee maybe?

  93. Teresa Landers says:

Seems to me that the jeans were just a bit too casual with the jacket. Better would have been a crisper and somewhat darker pair of jeans. A white top rather than the blue would have also upgraded the look. Or a ncklace or scarf would have increased the “intentionality”. To me, the impression is one of “I just grabbed what was at hand”. The “effortless” look requires a lot of effort to look good.

  94. I think you look fine in the denim. Maybe a colored shirt underneath the denim jacket or maybe just darker denim jeans would change it up. But I like your denim look.

  95. Good morning and Happy Birthday. Sorry life sent a couple of curve balls on your Bday. I like your Canadian tuxedo. I am from Texas so, this is right up my ally. I love a monochromatic outfit. If you feel “off” maybe just a pop of color (a different color T-shirt or add a scarf or bangles) and a necklace on the outside of the t-shirt. Love the shoes!!

      1. Pippa Buff says:

I would go with the palest pink t-shirt and maybe a short chunky necklace. Pink sneakers maybe? I do wear denim pieces together but look for them to be noticeably different washes.

  96. Happy birthday! Glad you were able to feel the love of your family even though other things tried to mess up your day. I love to mix vintage and more modern furniture. Your daughter’s apartment looks lovely. As far as the outfit, for me I think it is the shoes that throw it off. Have a good day!

    1. Thank you. I love the way her apartment is coming together. It’s so “her”!

  97. About the denim on denim look, I suggest wearing a lighter (White?) tee shirt and a darker wash jean.

  98. Lee in Chicago says:

Mixing and matching furniture…or anything…makes life…and surroundings…more interesting. The chairs and chandelier are lovely and intrinsically interesting. The room looks lovely and the mirror has a great shape.

For me, the one out of sorts ingredient in your outfit is a need for crisp and perhaps color contrast to counter the soft tee and jacket. The pants have a wrinkled, worn look but so do the tee and jacket. Maybe crisp black pants/jeans or just crisp jeans, like trousers?

  99. Ellen Webb says:

    First, happy belated birthday!
I love denim on denim and thought you looked okay. I might have subbed a white button down shirt, tucked, with a bandanna tied at my neck, and my jacket would not have been oversized. I also remember wearing my bell bottoms with my denim work shirt back in the day, so I’ve been doing denim on denim forever.
As for mixing antiques with modern- I like it if it’s done right, but that is very subjective isn’t it? I look forward to reading your posts- thanks for doing them and please continue.

  100. I, too, had a sort of “meh” birthday last week…..didn’t have quite as many pitfalls as you, but it was uneventful even though friends and family rallied around to make it tolerable. Do you think perhaps a print top, or differently colored top might have changed up the “tuxedo” look? Or maybe, just maybe, your joy was running on dim that day? You looked wonderful, btw, and as I also learned last week….we need to give ourselves a little grace. Enjoy your next trip around the sun!

    1. Happy Birthday Lynn!

    2. Nancy Hopkins says:

I love the Canadian tuxedo look!!!!!

  101. Daneen Hirbe says:

As I scrolled down looking at your denim outfit, I thought this looks really nice and beautiful shades of blue……until I scrolled to your feet. I think I’d rather see a pair of Cole Haan loafers.

  102. Maybe everything blended too much? Only the purse seems different & then it just feels off? I constantly struggle to put outfits together, more often I feel just dressed

  103. I think the double denim look you put together looks beautiful on you. The shades of blue you picked are very flattering. I’m wondering if you might like the look more if you added some contrast with a bolder long pendant necklace or a pretty patterned scarf?

  104. re the Canadian tuxedo, I think it may look better with a different shirt underneath. I saw a woman yesterday wearing a similar “tux” but she wore a pretty blue floral button up shirt underneath and I think it made all the difference.

re your daughter’s home, I love mixing styles, and I love the sofa, rug, and lamp.

  105. Love antique with modern. I think it’s eclectic for sure. I agree with you. I think your washes were too close in color. I didn’t look bad but maybe a darker jacket or darker jeans?

  106. A belated Happy Birthday to you, Jennifer!

About the denim pairing: I think the look would feel more refined with a shorter, slightly more tailored jacket in a lighter blue wash layered over a white V-neck jersey. Adding a lightweight beige scarf and a delicate necklace would soften the overall effect and add polish. I’d also recommend swapping the straight-leg jeans for slim-fit ones to enhance the silhouette.

The photo you shared features a jacket that falls to the top of your thighs and jeans with a relaxed fit. While your style is never sloppy, the looser proportions and deep blue tones together can unintentionally give off that impression. That said, there’s no denying your photo gives off a very relaxed and comfy vibe.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom. Your blog is the only one I follow now, and the only one that still feels like a conversation.

    1. Thank you Lynn! I’m so glad you’re here with us.

  107. Good Morning Jennifer, and happy belated birthday and that chandelier is amazing! I’ve always been afraid to wear denim on denim, but getting braver about trying. I like a monochrome look, but maybe a black t-shirt to break things up a bit and tie together the purse? And maybe the washes are too similar. I dunno … It all looks pretty darn good, but will be anxious to hear what you and others think.

  108. I would say a pop of color is needed , with your tee or maybe different colorful sneakers. but overall I like the look !
I’ve never done denim with denim but might try –

    1. It can be a fun look and is often my favorite.

  109. Hi Jen,

I’ll give my $.02 on your tuxedo. I would do a “normal” jean jacket rather than an oversized one. I think the proportions are a little off with the relaxed jeans. Also, I would try a white or maybe a black tee rather than the blue.

Hope you are recovering nicely – hang in there! Oh, and I love your daughter’s place! I’m impressed with her patience and planning.

    1. I’m looking less like a cartoon character this AM but still swollen and headed towards the peeling stage.

  110. Hi, Jennifer, a belated happy birthday! Your daughter’s rooms look gorgeous. I love mixing old and new to give a room character. I agree that your denim on denim look is just a wee bit off. Maybe it was the denim jacket worn over the blue tshirt? You always look great in the denim/chambray shirt and jeans outfits that you post.

  111. Andrea J McMillen says:

I don’t believe I’m even saying this…I love blue everything but at first glance, I thought maybe too much blue. If you changed the tee color to rosy pink, burgundy, light teal green or turquoise, that might make a difference. I do like the denim on denim look. I have worn it in matching denim colors or break it up a little with a light denim jacket or vest and darker bottom or vice versa. Or maybe adding a scarf with some other colors would do the trick.

  112. Good morning, Jennifer-Your daughter’s home looks wonderful! I love the delicate yet modern chandelier-very feminine. It pairs well with the antique mirror, table/chairs and the contemporary sofa & rug. Our home is a blend of old & some more modern things collected with love! We are not wealthy but we know what we like and enjoy the hunt.
To me, your outfit could use jeans with a wider leg to balance your shoulders. You look thicker than you are in the photo. Maybe a Vneck tee in a darker shade of blue or a belt?
    Love your blog!
    Pat S.

  113. If you changed the tee to black or white or wore a white shirt with cuffs up, I think the tuxedo would work better.

Your daughter’s space is looking lovely; a blend is always more interesting!

  114. I too like denim on denim. I think white tennis shoes would have made the difference. Still, you look great!

  115. First, happy birthday! I love your daughter‘s apartment, the table and chairs are gorgeous. I also love double denim. You are right, there is something about this outfit that does not land. I almost think is the total monochrome look. If the shirt had been white and the sneakers a little different, it might have been better. The denim washes are very similar, but that is not necessarily an issue. Hope your recovery continues!

  116. Please tell your daughter that her home looks perfect to me. Great choice on the chairs for her table. Just lovely.
About your outfit…my favorite colors…but too much, perhaps. I think some jewelry to break up the look, or scarf, or different color shoes?

    1. I will tell her! Thanks Susan

  117. Denim tuxedo thought: may be the proportions. Both the jacket and jeans are a little of the oversized look, so maybe a more cropped/tighter fitting jacket or slimmer jeans? Also, there’s a lot of similar blue – maybe a white tee?

  118. Happy birthday and many more!

  119. Sorry on the derm comment, that was an ouch. On the denim on denim, I like the jacket and jeans on you, but maybe have some contrast with the shirt, to a white or light pink, peach? Also darker blue sneakers. I like each piece but would wear it with some contrast. I have had tops in the same shade as the long sleeve tshirt, and cannot wear them unless they have a sharp contrast to my jeans. Have a blessed week!

  120. Mary Lou Holt says:

I know you love the monochromatic look, but perhaps this was a little too much blue? Maybe a patterned or striped shirt and a contrasting color with a bag that picked up some of the contrasting colors would have worked well. Also, black jeans look great with a blue denim jacket and a crisp white shirt with some pretty silver jewelry. You always look good no matter what you wear! I hope your face is feeling better this week!

    1. Thanks Mary Lou. It’s on the mend and not as uncomfortable as Sat, that’s for sure.

  121. Jean Faulkner says:

Hi Jennifer – as a Canadian I definitely do the tuxedo! Living in the country it’s a mainstay in my wardrobe. The lighter wash is lovely on you – I think if you mixed up a bit with a white t-shirt and darker denim jacket it would be perfect! A little contrast in the denim makes it all work best! Thanks for all your candour, love how “real” you are! Heal well !

  122. Jennifer, I think this is a very cute outfit and I’m actually inspired by it. But I know what you mean. Maybe the shirt needs texture and a slightly lighter shade? And maybe a v-neck so there’s a little more skin showing and a necklace? I think it’d be fun if in a future post you take some of whatever suggestions you get here and do the outfit again! This really helps us learn how to take an outfit from good to great!

  123. Happy Birthday Jennifer! I truly believe that every birthday is a gift. We all know friends who would have literally given anything to have lived to the age we are now. I try to honor them by truly appreciating every birthday I’m given (73 this past May!) I once asked my 42 year daughter her opinion of denim on denim, and I was met with a very solemn negative shake of the head. However, I occasionally do it, but not full blown. In your case, possibly a different color tee and sneakers? I laughed at the term “Canadian tuxedo.” We summer in Massachusetts where we have the term “Cape Cod tuxedo” for men. Blue blazer, Vineyard Vines tie, and off white pants. Finally, bravo to you and your daughter for tackling decorating. I have no confidence in my ability in that arena. Hence, it’s always a decorator for me!

  124. Grandma Judy says:

I don’t think your outfit looks bad at all, just very very casual. Do you think that is why you weren’t totally comfortable with it? Nothing jumps out and says “smart”. That happens to me sometimes. Maybe a cropped jean jacket or skinnier jeans , or a necklace. You will figure out how to tweak it next time. Good luck!!

  125. Carol Leyman says:

The colors of the denim are too similar. A lighter, different color tee would be better. A white button down would have stood out.
It’s nice to see everyone makes fashion mistakes.
Hold you head up high. We are still beautiful even when the outfit doesn’t work.

  126. Linda Barrett says:

    Hello!
I think the denim on denim looks good on the top half but maybe the jeans are not quite the right colour? White would be great of course! A darker wash of jeans might look better. Also, sorry, but I don’t think the blue trainers do you any favours! The ubiquitous white always look fresh and more modern, or a tan colour.
How awful of your dermatologist to refer to your ‘muzzle’! No way dies it look saggy or baggy!!!
Best wishes from a UK reader.

  127. Good morning, beautiful lady! I too love a Canadian tuxedo! Maybe all the pieces were too close in the intensity/tone? For what it’s worth, you always look great!

  128. Lori Kuehne says:

I like your denim on denim look. Proportions appear good no me. I think the blue tee throws it off. A darker or lighter blue there will do the trick.
Love the antique and modern mix😊

  129. I think denim on denim either needs to be a complete match OR a definite contrast (light and dark) to make it work. If it’s a close but not quite match, it just looks a little off.

  130. Good morning and Happy Birthday! My first thought is that the blues in the Canadian tuxedo picture are your colors! Your face looks radiant and not at all like you went through what you went through! If I had to pick it apart, I would say that the jacket might be too long. When I crop the jacket in the photo with my hand, it seems to work better to my eye. I would maybe switch out the purse to something bigger and slouchier as well. That last one is impossible to picture so I could be wrong. Secondly, when I was thin, and in my mid thirties, a dentist was evaluating me for Invisalign. He was saying it would help straighten my front teach and.. “help with this!”. As he said “help with this”, he POKED MY STOMACH!! I obviously went with a different dentist but who does that?! Imagine if I had been an insecure teen instead of a grown woman. Honestly!

    1. Thank you Anne! That’s shocking what that dentist said, and did! How dare he?

  131. First off, you always look pulled together :). In this case, I think a darker wash denim and a pop of color in the T and/or shoes (that’s a lot of blue!) and it would have looked more polished. I’m going to try it myself this fall when it cools off in Florida.

  132. Brenda Gordon says:

just a different color tee I think. keep the long look with
everything else. I personally am not a denim tuxedo fan😽

  133. I think denim on denim works, but I would add a different color top and perhaps different color athletic shoes. That might have perked it up a bit.

  134. I feel it’s the blue shirt.

    1. That was my first thought too.

      1. I completely agree—just swap the top for another color, and you’re good to go! When it comes to furniture, mixing styles from different periods is the way to go. An eclectic look adds so much more character than perfectly matched pieces, in my opinion.
I can’t wait to see your laser results! I’ve had a full-face treatment before, and the pain was beyond what I can describe. Wishing you a smooth healing process—it’s definitely a journey, but absolutely worth it in the end.
On another note, I want you to know how much your health journey posts have helped me. My daughter recently discovered a large mole on her calf. Her doctor said it was nothing, but after reading your story, I shared it with her and will keep encouraging her to seek a second opinion. Also, your experience with dry eyes has been incredibly valuable to me, as I’m dealing with similar issues. Thank you for sharing all of this—it’s been such a great resource.

      2. I’m so happy to hear it’s been helpful Joan! Please encourage her to be persistant until she’s satisfied.

  135. Good morning, I think one piece of denim and an older woman, such as myself, is good. An all denim look is too much. It looks like I’m trying to hard to look young.

  136. I think it doesn’t work with the shirt

  137. In my opinion your pants are too long for those shoes, maybe shorter pants or rolled pants with a red ballet flat or black boots, but not round toes, and a white shirt with the collar up or a black and white stripe tee or a graphic tee, and add a belt with any top. You could do a chambray shirt partially unbuttoned with a neutral tank. That was fun! I need someone to do that with all my outfits.

  138. Mary Timbers says:

Jennifer I feel the jacket is too long. Also a contrasting, perhaps white top would break up the blues. I’m not a fan of full same wash denim.

  139. I mix old and new furniture. At this age, buying only new doesn’t work for me. I enjoy the resale hunt too much.

I think the denim on denim looks works when the washes are different (dark & light or blue with white). The contrast makes it more interesting and less of a uniform.

    1. Mary Wilson says:

I think a crisp white tee shirt and different shoes. Too much blue….that would be my suggestion

      1. Lou pikowicz says:

The jacket is the wrong length. I think a long denim coat would look great!

  140. A white T-shirt instead of the blue is my suggestion- but you look lovely as always!

  141. Hi Jennifer,
Regardless of her terminology using the term, “muzzle”, lol, I remain inspired & appreciative of your sharing details of the journey through the Fraxel treatment! I hope you continue to rest & stay away from the sunshine so you heal quickly!

I was not familiar with the term, Canadian tuxedo, so looked it up! Since you asked, I wonder if the straight cut jeans might be too full cut and a tiny bit too long overwhelming your petite frame?

    1. I’m taking a few photos to share later.

  142. Carol Goodman says:

My last week brought me conjunctivitis which I believe is viral or environmental (Everglades fires) but not bacterial as on Day 4-5 they are itchier than ever. And, there is no cure but time.
As far as your tuxedo outfit ( I’ve never heard of that.) I think the jeans are too relaxed. The jacket is very nice.
Good luck with your recovery. (And, good luck with mine.) Happy Birthday!

    1. Oh no Carol! I’m so sorry, that’s miserable.

  143. Good Monday morning to you ! We just returned from a wonderful week spent with my son and his family in Northern Maine so thankfully no surprises. We did have some plumbing issues before we left but they were repaired upon our return.
As for decorating I am now going more towards minimalist but like random antiques also.
And the “ Tux “ …… I would have done a different color for the tee – would definitely wear denim on denim !

  144. It could be that the washes are too similar or it could be that the outfit needs more color. I love your bag so I would probably go with a cream shirt and black shoes. Or, choose another color bag and repeat the color in your outfit even if its a scarf or bolder jewelry.

  145. i think the denim washes may have been to close color. the jacket could have been darker. also in my opinion, too much blue going on. but everyone has their own spin on the canadian tuxedo.do what works for you..

    1. It’s the blue T shirt. It’s too close in color to the jacket and pants and makes the outfit look something like an industrial uniform.

  146. carolyn lassonde says:

I think you hit it on the head with the denim look. The washes are too close, the jacket is too boxy, and a V-neck tee in a different color (not blue) would have been more interesting, perhaps?

  147. Monochromatic looks are great, most of the time. With your denim outfit there is too much blue. Perhaps a different color shirt would be better for a little contrast. Can’t go wrong with white. With the jacket and jeans you would still have the monochromatic slimming look. Also a larger necklace In silver to bring attention to the outfit. The outfit, as is, comes off very bland. JMO. Have a great day. Interested in seeing the results of your Fraxel procedure. When I look back on the photos of my CO2 laser treatment and even my BBL therapy treatment I cringe. I looked like a nightmare! However it was worth the swelling, peeling and discomfort. My skin looks so much better. I am having another BBL treatment after my vacation in a few weeks.

    1. I’m looking pretty scary today so I’m anxious to move past this stage and have the swelling go down.

  148. Jane Long says:

First, Happy Birthday. It sounds like it was quite the time.
I’m looking forward to seeing the results of your laser treatment on your “muzzle” 😆. I would like to look into that as well. I love all of the different topics you discuss in your blog. I’ve looked at and bought many of the cruelty free products you’ve reviewed and recommended. Thank you for that!

  149. Jennifer! Happy belated birthday! Glad to see chocolate was involved!

I’m dying to hear ( and see) how your Fraxel experience turned out. I have similar sun damage from years at the Jersey shore with baby oil and iodine by my side. Never did tan! Please share if you are willing and I may take the plunge!

I liked your denim look and don’t claim to be a fashionista, but in view of the fact that you felt it didn’t work: add color around your face? Does the bag throw you off?

Thank you for all you do! I look forward to your weekly “visit.”

    1. Thank you Sandy! I was a baby oil and iodine victim too. The damage I did! Im taking photos and hope to share them. Fingers crossed.

  150. I would have chosen a different shirt—something more fitted. The shirt in a contrasting color might have provided a pop of color against the jacket.

  151. Your daughter’s home looks lovely. I like to mix old and new pieces together. For the jean outfit, I would have rolled the sleeves up one more time and wore a different color shirt. I think there’s too much blue.

  152. Becky Westover says:

I think you didn’t like the outfit because it has too much blue too near the same color. (The outfit reminds me of myself, because I tend to be too matchy- matchy also). I suggest using a different color for your top, handbag and possibly shoes.

  153. A belated Happy Birthday! I hope you are recovering well from the Fraxel, physio and the flood!
I’m a fan of the Canadian Tuxedo too 🇨🇦 but agree this version is a little off. Too much blue? More variation in the denim colour? The jacket proportion? I’d like to hear your view and see another version.
Love your daughter’s decorating style. Especially those chairs!

  154. Maybe a shorter denim jacket that hit above your hips, waist length? Also maybe a different tone of blue for the tee. Not as bad though as you seemed to think.

  155. Jennifer – personally, the “tuxedo” look is not my style of choice. I think a white or print tee to break it up between jacket & jeans would make the look better, give it more creativity/style. Happy Birthday!

  156. Catherine says:

I mix furniture and decor styles. I love the juxtaposition of old and new.

As to the outfit. I don’t care for the two washes together but I think the problem might be too much blue. The shirt and shoes add more similar blues. I think it’s just too much of a good thing.

  157. Jennifer, my thought that the outfit would benefit very much from a V neck tee shirt. Just a thought…

  158. Hey j I too love that all over denim look, but in my opinion, the reason that that did not work is the cut of the jeans. For that particular look I believe a Boot cut would’ve been more flattering. And a pretty generous Boot cut at that… By that I mean really fitted around the upper knee, knee and directly below the knee flaring out at the bottom boot cut. Another idea that might have made a difference is a cropped jean look. I’m 73 myself and struggle with getting just the right youthful look sometimes. I love your blog and wouldn’t miss it for anything.

    1. I’m with Peggy. I think a boot cut jean would work better. Also, booties rather than sneakers, and a white T or button down shirt.
I think that would look good and more elevated. However, if you are running out for errands and that’s what is clean and comfortable, wear it!
And …. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
      Take care of yourself!

      1. Thanks Nancy!
