Haircare Products I Use For My Over 50 Thinning Hair
My hair has always been baby-fine, poker-straight, and very thin. Add menopause and thyroid issues to the mix, and you have the perfect storm for hair loss. Itās always a struggle to find a hairstylist who knows how to cut my fine hair, so Iām thrilled to have discovered one near me. I’ve learned from experience how tough this all is and how no one ever talks about it. For that reason, I’m sharing how I’ve been updating my haircut and the products I use for my over 50 thinning hair. I hope this post helps you feel less alone if you’re also suffering from thinning hair, and this gives you hope in discovering new products.

Hair Loss in Women
Let me start by saying…midlife hair loss is not unusual for women. In fact, it is way more common than you think. While it’s talked about in men all of the time, it seems to be rarely talked about in women. I’m here to tell you that you are not alone. I know firsthand how it can impact your confidence and cause you to feel embarrassed. Sometimes even to the point of wanting to avoid your hairdresser.
Iāve discovered that the way my hair is cut, the products I use, and how I blow dry it are my best hope to camouflage hair loss and make it look thicker and fuller.

My Over 50 Haircut
As your hair changes and thins, you will likely need to change up your typical haircut and possibly go even shorter. This is why finding a stylist you trust is so important. Having someone knowledgeable about what will look best is crucial.
My old haircut shown in the video is a short, blunt bob with no stacking in the back. Itās the same length in front as it is in the back. Then she cut a blunt layer around the top of my head which allows me to get some lift.
But recently, my hair has gotten so thin that my stylist and I agreed it was time to grow out my layers and go a bit shorter. The result looks dangerously like a bob. I say dangerously because bobs feel so expected on a woman with fine, thin hair, and Iād prefer a more unique style. Itās the best haircut for my current hair, so I’m getting creative with products and experimenting with new ways to style it. Below, you’ll find a picture of my new haircut.

Iāve made a little video you can watch here to help deconstruct my haircut, the products I use, and the process I go through to style it.
I use a round brush, mousse or gel, dry shampoo, and hairspray. I use a lot of products, yet when Iām done, it doesnāt look like helmet hair.
Best Treatment for Thinning Hair in Females
Products to Use for Regrowth

My physician suggested I try 5% Rogaine for men to slow the thinning and encourage regrowth. Itās something that I truly can’t live without. Iāve found the best pricing on Amazon and order 3 bottles every 3 months. If you stop using Rogaine, the new hair will fall out, so I continue to use it daily.
You can see how I apply it to my hair in this blog post.

Iāve dabbled with other shampoos and conditioners but never found one that I preferred in every way until I switched toĀ Olaplex. Every product in their line is paraben, sulfate, phthalate, gluten, and cruelty-free, so I feel as good about using them as they feel on my hair. Itās highly moisturizing and leaves my hair feeling healthier and looking shinier. The No.5 Maintenance conditionerĀ helps hydrate my hair without weighing it down.

Once a week, I spray the No.0 Bond BuildingĀ on dry hair and let it saturate for 10 minutes.

I am a big fan of this Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity Oil-free Gel. It adds volume but isn’t greasy, no matter how much I apply.

Any dry shampoo helps make your hair look like it has more volume, but this Perfect Hair Day is my very favorite.

I recently tied this Color Wow On Steroids styling spray, and it’s amazing. It doesn’t have the dry shampoo feel, yet it adds tons of body.

I spottedĀ this hair foam with the same BioPeptin Complex as the brow serum and decided to give it a shot. This is not a budget item, but it makes a big difference in my hair which feels thicker all over. I still use my Rogaine, and then I add a tiny dollop of the foam directly on the spots around my hairline that are receding the most and comb through. I only use it once daily in the front, so 1 bottle lasts me close to 6 months. Reviewers say theyāre going through the bottle way too fast to be cost-effective, so I assume theyāre using much more than I am.

I love this round brush for helping to add extra body too. I have several sizes based on how long my hair is.

Iāve also discovered that just being gentler with my hair has made a big difference. I nowĀ squeeze the water out of my hair with my towel rather than rubbing it vigorously. I comb it with this wide toothcomb before I add any products.

I swear byĀ these velcro rollers. My ultra-fine, thinning hair needs all the help it can get, and a few moments in these rollers while I shower gives it some nice lift.

I use these hot rollers on my freshly washed and dry hair for tons of volume.

I also upgraded my drugstore hairdryer to this Dyson Supersonic Hair DryerĀ last year. Itās got a cult following that I now understand. My hair dries in half the time it used to take just using medium speed and heat which is much gentler on my hair.
More Products to Help with Thinning Hair
While I haven’t used these products before, I have heard good things from others about each of them and wanted to share.
Do you struggle with thinning hair?
What products do you use? I’d love to hear what has worked for you!

Jennifer your hair looks great. I only brush my long hair right before washing it which is every other day. No hairdryer since I was 20 and am now 70. I have cut and colored my hair (blond) for nearly 30 years now. So glad because I hated salons! My hair budget is about $12/month. I finger comb my hair very gently! Use Nice ‘n’ Easy 8G golden blond. I paint the hair color into the roots with a paint brush and leave the color in about 1 hour +15 minutes.
Thank you!
I see a lot of ladies with thin hair and almost all of them are NOT on hormone replacement therapy. If it’s an option for you, I would try it. My hair is fine, but think because of HRT.
I have used HRT for 20 years and plan to continue till I die. I am 70 now. Yes, my hair has stayed normal thickness. I trim and color it myself now for 30 years.
What hair spray do you use?
Second time that Iāve posted here aboutāBoldifyā ā it is a powder you shake on and then brush to get the lift your want. I have been using for a year and when my hair growth decides to rest, usually āIn the fall, it is the perfect solution to thinning hair and also covers grey at parts and cowlicks. They recommend using a shade or two darker than your hair color and I couldnāt agree more. I have med blond hair and now use the light brown shade, which gives some depth to the color, covering any silver roots! I hope you will give it a try. These kinds of powders are popular here in Japan where people maintain very dark hair color shades. Unfortunately, no brands here offer a color that works for me, so I turn to Amazon. I think you will find this works better than a dry shampoo with the benefit of color for roots. I have no financial interest in this productā but it truly rescues me on a bad hair day!
Thank you so much for the videos on your hair. I think yours looks awesome! I struggle with the same hair and more importantly a good haircutter. It really gets me down occasionally, but I try to focus on the positive – health, family, etc. Sometimes I think haircutters don’t want the challenge of cutting fine thin hair. I live 2.5 hours away from NYC, but believe or not thinking of exploring cutters in that area. Anyway – I really appreciate your blog. Keep the content coming š
I hear you. I would drive a long distance for a great haircut so I totally understand.
Yep, Rogaine. I use it too, except I buy the Costco Brand Minoxidil. Same thing. This has been a lifesaver for my hair but you do have to make a commitment to it. We have the same hair, baby fine, thin & straight. I have been going a bit shorter and my cut is almost like yours, a bob but not a bob. I like it but it now seems to accentuate my crepey neck. Got any suggestions for neck cream or somehow camouflaging the neck area – my one hate!.
I actually just let my hair get a few inches longer again and prefer it. I slather moisturizer on and am diligent about sunscreen. I also use the fermented essence on my neck and chest. Itās very hydrating.
I really appreciate this post and I think your new hairstyle is super flattering. I use Nioxin shampoo, Kevin Murphy anti-gravity spray, and Revlon one step hair dryer brush. I used dry shampoo in between washes. I used to lighten my hair (professionally) but it became too thin and broke in the front, so now I used a gloss in the shower to help turn the gray to light blonde, but I wish I could pull off a blonde look. Going to try some of the products you suggest, thanks.
I love Kevin Murphy products
Your new hair cut looks amazing.
I will be trying some of the products you mentioned. Thank you for all the information you gave us and being so honest.
I recently tried a new shampoo and conditioner called Routine and so far it is helping me with thinness with my hair. You look wonderful thank you.
Thank you. I havenāt heard of that brand, Iāll have to check it out!
I can identify with all the childhood bangs disasters, lol. Currently, I am loving the Kevin Murphy products, especially the anti gravity lotion and mousse!!
Thank you so much for this post. When I asked my dermatologist about hair loss, HE said I had two choices: hair transplant or a wig. (Time to get a new dermatologist?) I so appreciate your video and sharing your favorite products, and I have enjoyed seeing what others are using. Obviously we are all stressed to a degree about our thinning hair. I am bombarded by ads for dietary supplements that will improve hair growth from within, and I’m surprised that I haven’t seen any comments addressing that — the aforementioned dermatologist said none of them work, but I’ve been hopeful that some of them do work. I’m suspect of all the hype and don’t trust the comments, so I’ve not tried any of them. Like others, my stylist moved away after being my go-to friend for 20 years. My foray into finding a new stylist has been frustrating — the highly recommended salon has bounced me from one stylist to another to another in three visits — each time, these young women don’t seem to understand that I need lift and fullness in my bob, and I’ve left looking like the Little Dutch Boy. I’m on the hunt for a stylist who understands my kind of hair, and I think that means a more mature, experienced stylist. Wish me luck, please. And thanks again for taking us on your journey — you are an inspiration in so many ways. PS — I’ll be 80 in February, and I’m determined to improve my hair!!
I was lucky enough to find and experienced stylist with thin hair, so she understands. Look for ladies with thin hair that is styled nicely and ask who cuts it for them.
Yes, I have fine hair too although my stylist always said I had a lot of it. However, at 65 I know I’ve lost hair! The cut is so important. I think your new haircut looks wonderful and plan to show it to my stylist. I know what you mean by not wanting your cut to look boring. It can be a hard thing to achieve at our age.
I think it’s harder to avoid boring because of our age.
Jennifer-thanks for video. I too, have the same hair. I have already used most of the products you use from reading your blog for a while. The Olaplex seemed to make my hair more flat. I quit using it but will try it again. I have not tried Rograine but I will. i needed this post! Thanks!
The Rogaine made the biggest difference in regrowth for me, so it’s worth a try.
I swear by viviscal and Theradome, a red light laser cap. I too have hypothyroidism and thinning hair and this has been a lifesaver for me. I want to maintain what I have and these work well.
I’ve not heard of the Theradome cap. How long have you been using it?
Thank you for this post, Jennifer. It is reassuring knowing that Iām not the only woman dealing with this issue. I appreciate your honesty and am grateful for your sharing your journey with thinning hair. Iāve gained some good tips – You are the best! š
Best of luck, Mary. It’s not fun to deal with
Thanks for your video and tips for managing fine, thin hair. My oddball questionā¦have you found a great way when traveling to continue use of all, or some, of these hair care products? Also, do you schedule regular haircuts to maintain the cut?
I take most of them with me in travel sizes. I get a cut every 6-8 weeks
Whoa! Absolutely gorgeous! You look like a professional model in your finished photo above. You may use a lot of product but it sure does the trick. You go girl!
Thank you
I thought I was so ahead of the game letting my nice thick hair go naturally gray. Enter menopause, thyroid issues, and then stupid Covid! Now my hair is much thinner, and my stylist got out of the business and moved across the country. And! I have scalp issues which require a routine of various shampoos. Such a big deal to take care of hair. Fortunately I still have hair. You can see why hats were popular for so long in years gone by. If anyone out there is feeling totally defeated by hair loss, please invest the time and money to see a dermatologist. There are things that can be done. Want to try some of these products. Thank you!
I love my hats š
Thanks for sharing your info on thinning hair; it was very informative. I have just a couple of oddball questions for you. How often do you schedule your hair appointments to keep it looking your best? Also, with all of our hair care products have you found an easier way to travel with products to keep our hair looking good? Iād like to travel light but, find it difficult with all of my hair care products. Any suggestions?
I use travel sizes or decant my products. I see my stylist ever 6-8 weeks when possible.
Jennifer, thanks for sharing this information. My mother’s hair got very thin as she aged and I have definitely seen a reduction in my follicle count from a stressful job (now retired), menopause, multiple foot surgeries and genetics.
I have used a lot of things over the last 10 years to treat it as well as hair products. Here are a few from my line-up. I use a Hairmax laser band several times per week, Minoxidil (5%) added a few months ago, Actiiv Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner, Olaplex products.
For styling I use 30/40 styling brush that is infused with Keratin and Argan Oil, Davine’s Ol All in One Milk Spray (protectant and detangler), Kenra Texture Spray (new addition and it helps hold curl and gives body) and N.4 High Performance Hair Care Mighty Hair Spray.
I have been so curious about the hair band but worry I wouldn’t be compliant with usage. I bought one, then returned it so I guess I should give it a shot. Thanks so much for sharing, Pam.
Thanks so much for this article! I have baby fine hair. It looked and felt thicker when I colored it. However, Iām happy that I stopped coloring it and love my shiny silvery white hair color. Soon after I was fully transitioned, one of my friends said she would stop coloring her own hair but she didnāt want anyone to see her scalp the way you could see mine. Oh my gosh! When I got home that night I examined my entire head and yes you could see too much scalp along my part. Well, I cried and cried. I hadnāt noticed it before and wonder if I ever would have if it hadnāt been pointed out to me. I talked about this with my hairdresser who hugged and hugged me. Then we changed my hairstyle to a shorter, āpieceyā style that better disguises my part. Iāve finally stopped obsessing over itāwell, for the most part I have but I do have my moments. Anyhow, I think my hairstyle is cute, it looks good right after I do it and I try to be satisfied with that. My hair is great in low humidity weather, humidity weighs it down. I use Paul Mitchell The One shampoo, just a touch of the matching conditioner, Redken Hardwear styling gel, and Paul Mitchell Soft Style Super Clean Hairspray. Every 2 to 3 weeks I use Redken Hair Clarifying Shampoo. Again, thanks for a great article!!!
Thank you for sharing your story; I know it’s a painful one. I’m glad you’ve found a style that sounds very cute. Your stylist sounds like a gem! Piecey is often better on me too.
Terry – I have the same problem. Funny, but I just noticed it this morning! I have white hair now and over the last year have grown it from very short to about chin length and now that it is longer, my part line shows my pink scalp too much for my liking. I spent the morning researching and just ordered a powder root product that you apply along the part line and it covers the pinkness of the scalp. The photos shown look promising. I will update this when I receive it and share the product name. Fingers crossed that it works.
Please do share when you try it, Yvonne
The product I found is “Fill In Powder by Joan Rivers Beauty” (who knew Joan Rivers did hair products!?). I bought it on Amazon.ca and it was the only powder that came in white that I could find available in Canada. It’s also available in a number of other colours. It’s a pressed powder in a compact and comes with a brush for application. I just dabbed it (think stipple) on the part line and then rubbed it in a bit. It takes a bit of trial and error to figure out the right amount, but it definitely made my pink scalp less noticeable. I only used it on a small area where the scalp was quite obvious, so not sure how effective it would be for larger areas. The included brush is of poor quality and shed a lot of fibres, so I switched to one of my own flat brushes and that worked fine. It’s supposed to last till you wash your hair and as I only shampoo every 3 days, I was impressed with the staying power. I dampen my hair to style it on the in between days, and only had to do a light application on the 3rd day. Overall I was happy with the results.
Thank you for sharing, Yvonne. I had no idea Joan Rivers made anything like that!!
I have naturally curly hair. Once upon a time it was also thick and I could literally just lean over and scrunch it while wet and then allow it to air dry. Now that it has thinned and the curly look is just reminiscent of my grandma with her short, thin, permed hair. I like to blow it dry because it looks thicker that way. The thinning is mostly on the top and I have considered using Rogaine. But, I really don’t want to wash and blow dry it on a daily basis. I don’t think all that extra heat will be good for my hair as well. I usually wash every third day and do a quick touch-up with the hair dryer or curling iron in between. Are you washing your hair daily. If not, how does the Rogaine affect your styling?
You don’t have to wash your hair every day when using Rogaine. I wash mine every three days. The liquid doesn’t effect the strands because you just apply to the scalp. The liquid does not make my hair oily at all!
Same here….years ago I found a Mother’s Day Card that said “To the best mother ever – and on the inside – even if you did cut my bangs to short!” I found one of those photos with my super short bangs and pasted it inside! She always said my hair grew that way….which I guess was true because I still have very fine, straight hair. I have a short pixie cut with spikes on top….works great for my hair, dries with my hands in under a minute, and finish with a little wax and spray.
I love that card!!! My bangs were so short and crooked it was hilarious. Not at the time, but now I can find it funny.
I personally like bobs. I think it is a classic style for any age.
I was shocked recently to discover several small bald spots on top of my head. I immediately ordered Rogaine. My haircut is very similar to yours. After shampooing I blow dry it until itās just damp and then use large foam rollers which I keep in for 30 minutes or so. My husband is much amused with this! I look forward to watching your video & trying some of these products.
Foam rollers sound super gentle. Husbands are easily amused š
First of all I would like to tell how fabulous your new style is! You look gorgeous!! I too was the victim of the Toni perms when I was a child. My hair was poker straight and thin. Then on top of it all my Mom used to pin curl my hair on Saturday evening for church on Sunday š±š± since starting my periods at age 12 my hair miraculously became curly but still thin. I thought this was a blessing but turned out to be a curse!! So when I started high school I would get up very early to wash my hair, use my rollers and sit under one of these bonnet type dryers! Good to go unless it was damp outside or humid and I was transformed into one huge frizz head. Now at 72 years young I am still struggling with my hair. I keep it short but canāt ever get it to do what I want. My stylist (new) is ok, my girl went home to be a full time mom. The new girl is still working with me, but so far itās just ok!! I will be patient but hopefully will soon come home with the perfect cutš¤©š¤©
Lol, I had a bonnet dryer too! Then hit rollers all through high school. Those perms were torturous.
First off, I love your new hairstyle. I think it is youthful and flattering.
I donāt have thinning hair but a girlfriend does so Iām thinking of forwarding this post. Do you think that would be offensive? š¤ Undecided hereā¦
Iām not sure because I donāt know your friend. If sheās talked about struggling with hair loss you might suggest this could be of interest to her. If sheās too embarrassed to mention it, I wouldnāt go there.
Jennifer, How do you travel with your hair products? When you fly do you always check your luggage? If you carry-on, how do you deal with the travel restrictions on liquids. Advice is appreciated,I always struggle with this. Thank you!
I never check a bag. I buy travel sizes of my products and decant hair gel into a smaller bottle. My Rogaine goes everywhere so I just remove the dropper and pack it separately then put the cap back on while on the move. Travel restrictions involve the number ounces for each product not how many products! Thatās how I get around it. Everything is small, but there are many of them. They all fit into a quart ziplock. Sort of like a jigsaw puzzle š
Before cancer I had almost your exact hairstyle! It was thinning bad and I started using Rogaine then. But then I had cancer and lost all my hair from chemo. It actually grew in thicker on the top but real straggley on the ends so my hairdresser suggested a pixie, which I absolutely hated but it does look thicker and I think it suits my small face. I still depend on Rogaine. I love checking out all your products.
Iām glad youāre cancer free, Rosemary!!
Jennifer, first I would like to thank you for addressing such a sensitive subject. I suffer from fine, thinning and wavy hair. I found with each month it is getting worse. My grandmother and mother both suffered from hair loss. I have found a styling mousse by Kenra, Thickening Mousse 12 , that works very well along with Paul Mitchell , Flexible Hair Spray. I will be trying some of your recommended products. Your new hair cut is so cute on you. Could please show us the back? Is it stacked ?
It is not stacked. I prefer more hair on the back of my neck because my shoulders are so broad. Plus if I stack it, you can see through the bottom, shorter layers.
Thank you for this post. I also have very thin, fine hair which is getting thinner. But mine is a little wavy and I wake up with crazy bedhead so I blow dry it every day to make it smooth and I know that is sooo bad. I can’t tell you how much money I have spent on hair products, very few of which turn out to be good for me. I’m going to try some of these!
Blow dryers seem hard on hair. Perhaps just brush it gently then put in huge Velcro rollers while you shower. That might smooth it out for you without the dryer.
I agree with the post and the comments. I now put collagen in my coffee and am seeing a nice difference in my hair! During COVID I quit highlighting and my husband trims my Bob and I use natural instincts #7 from the drug store. My hair never looked better. Their conditioner in the package is perfect! I do use the dyson dryer with the diffuser. I turn my head upside down and sideways. Then only use my round brush to smooth and turn under. The less I do to my thin, fine hair the better it looks! For special occasions I love the Velcro rollers, or my ceramic hot rollers. But I try to spare my hair. To lift the roots, I found Sexy Hair Big Root Pump the best, but just at roots. I use color biology, sulfate free, from Target that I think Jennifer recommended. Less is more! I now actually get compliments on my hair!
Itās funny you mention the diffuser. Iāve never tried mine! Iāll have to give it a shot. I agree the less I do the better for my fragile hair.
The struggle is real. I started following you Jennifer when I saw one of your styling videos and saw that your hair is just like mine. And I also suffered with the Toni perms as a kid. My daughter is a hairstylist and knows my struggle too. She recently brought me a product from Surface called Awaken Texture Spray. It is amazing. I just bend over and spray the underside of my hair then flip it back, lightly comb, and use Kenra 25 hairspray to finish. It really works.
Iāll check out the Awaken. Texture is so important to help with volume!
Do you have bangs with this cut?
Yes, a very thin fringe. I always have one because my forehead is so high.
Dear Jennifer,
I enjoy your articles and posts and always learn a new trick or two to try. I listened to this thinning hair post today and your product information was helpful. I am totally understanding of the problem and even share your issues with thyroid and graying hair. My gynecologist suggested I try collagen. I-needed help with hair thinning but also joint pain and found it helped. Even my dermatologist commented how much more hair I had and that the hair texture was thicker! My joint stiffness and pain is better and I am slowly increasing exercise.
It s a slow process but noticeable over the course of the year. I use the powder and sprinkle a scoop into my morning coffee. No taste, pleasant texture and hardly noticeable. I enjoy it. And, I am a black coffee fan. You may want to check it out!
I agree! Collagen is really helpful for so many things. I use a marine blend by Collagen For Her that Iām quite happy with.
Excellent video! Good tips.
I hate when the video says āstyling thin/fine hairā and these women have tons of super thick hair. Your video was actually helpful!
Love these tips. But what about the shampoo?
What shampoo and conditioner do you recommend?
Desperate in my searchā¦.!
I have used Kevin Murphy for years. Just recently I’ve begun using Olaplex and love all their products!
My hair is very thin and straight. What can I use to help me look good all day?
I really recommend a small spray of dry shampoo to add volume
Thank you so much. My hair looks much the same as yours and I suffer what th a lot of hair loss as well. Planning to try your secrets. Thanks!!
Lovely! Thanks for the tips šš
I absolutely understand your predicament as I have exactly the same type of hair. So frustrating as my hair used to be my ācrowning gloryā as my mother often called it! The cut is certainly the key, but based on your comments Iām going to start using more products too. Have ordered the Kevin Murphy volumizer and hope it will help out. Sadly, my long-time hairdresser is moving out of town so now I have to find someone else! Oh well, perhaps a new opportunity and a new cut will come out of it! Cheers, and thanks for your video. Judy āŗļø
It’s so stressful when you need to replace a favorite stylist. Good luck!
My hair is thin also. I asked my stylist what haircut should an old lady at 76 should have she told me a pixie or a wedge cut. I went with the wedge donāt care REALLY SHORT HAIR!!!!!!
Iāve had super thick, easy hair all my life. This summer I had a short bought of the crazy flu and about a month later my hair. Started falling out. Iām 77 and I donāt like this. I love your video. I have never curled or fussed over my hair and maybe Iāll try this before I shop for a wig. Thanks
Iām so sorry youāre struggling with this. I swear by the Mens Rogaine too. Best of luck.
I have the same hair. Do you use a hair protector before blow drying?
I do not, but I think I need to start using one.
You are really lovely. This is the best tutorial that I’ve seen on the issue. I have been losing hair since 2018. I think losing my fur baby triggered the start of my alopecia. I was diagnosed with a biopsy in 2019. Stress makes it worse. While I still have quite a bit of hair, it’s about 1/3 of what it was. My hair is about your thinness but to my shoulders which means the top is pretty flat and starting to show my scalp. I also have a cow lick at my bangs which is another issue. So, I often google, “hairstyles for thinning hair when you have a cow lick and round face.” Ugh. Never can quite get the info I need but yours was pretty close and gave lots of great tips! Thank you!
Thank you, Susan, I’m so sorry you’re struggling with this. Stress is a huge contributor, I know it was for me. Hang in there and let me know if I can offer you any more help.
I’ve had chemotherapy and my hair was shaved prior to the treatment. My hair g grew back except for 1 patch about 3 inches in diameter. I use Nutritive regrow hair and it helps but takes forever. The hairdresser manages to cover it but I don’t have much success doing it myself, any suggestions? Also, everybody mentions a video but I don’t see one, is it possible to re-post it again so I can watch it, thank you.
I do have an idea, but I’m not sure if it’s medically sound so please check with your Dr…I’ve just recently heard of people micro-blading into balding patches to color the scalp. Just a thought. The video is here https://youtu.be/JYqcY2WAW8M
Jennifer,
Any chance you can share what you do for your eyebrows? They look great and would appreciate any suggestions for my thinning/vanishing brows!
Yes! I started using this Brow Conditioner and they filled back in! I’ve gotten twice as long out of the tube as the directions say too. They grew in silvery colored so I brush this tinted brow gel on each morning to add color and hold them in place.
Jennifer, Thanks so much for helping us thin haired women. Iām going to try the gel, I love the Living Proof dry shampoo. My problem is getting a hairdresser to cut my hair in layers at the crown to give it lift. May need to cut some off myself. Yikes!!
Great tips!! Thank you!!
Go easy with the scissors. Itās a fine line between lift and limp. Too much and youāll be unhappy. Go slow. You can always cut more
Jennifer, in the early 90’s, a friend told me about her Caruso steamer roller set. I’ve been using one since that time. I wash my hair at night, use gel, bend over and blow dry on low. Comb the front opposite direction I want for the next day and spray. Every morning, I use the steam rollers, then do makeup. Like you, I don’t brush all the way thru. I spray and use my pick for lift at the crown. (I’ve used the word “brush”, but I use a big wide tooth comb and a plastic pick for lift.) Then spray and go. I’m 66 and have gone from every other day wash, to every 4/5 days. My cut is blunt, with layers near the top for lift. I’ve never thought of dry shampoo, that’s a good option to add some extra volume. But that Caruso hair setter has kept me going for 30 years (I’ve had to replace it once). Some of the ladies might want to check it out. Thank you for your column. I enjoy your bright smile and encouraging words !
I will check they set out, thanks! Iām a big believer in rollers of all kinds! š
If I had to go through the regimen that you go through Iād shave my head! You must be a very patient person!
lol, I must be either patient of persistent
Dear Jennifer, Thanks for being so open with a sensitive subject. I have the same hair as you! When worse came to worse, I ordered a bunch of faux hair from Paula Youngā¦..you can try and then return what you donāt want. Butā¦ā¦I found a few faux hair things from PYā¦ā¦..and just love them! And never looked prettier! So, ladies, donāt be too afraidā¦ā¦it happens to the best of us. The world of faux hair is fun! There are so many really cute styles and soon you can find the right color and style. Itās all good. XOX
Those sound so fun, Thanks for sharing, Marie
Better late than never and am so glad that you posted this link (today/June 18th) since did search your blog to no avail as was wondering what brand you used as a dry shampoo. Oddly enough, during the past two months noticed a lot of hair in my brush after washing (am not sure if it is breakage or loss) and with our hairdressing salons still closed, thought I would try it. Have also read up on the subject and considering my age perhaps it is normal but feel it is worth a try. Thanks so much Jennifer as always appreciate much that you share. -Brenda-
Hair loss is so disturbing. Iām sorry youāre dealing with it too Brenda.
I just watched you video! Thank you so much. I too have thin, fine hair. Mine has a little wiggle in it, but not much. I’ve let it get long through the pandemic and most days keep it in a pony tail or loose french braid. Now thinking seriously about cutting it to a bob which is how I have worn it many times. You are an inspiration.
Thank you, Marsha. I always wished I could wear a pony tail but mine is much too thin these days. For me, just below my ears seems to be the sweet spot for looking fuller.
I have had thin hair all my life. Now that Iām in my 70s, it is so thin Iām considering a wig. A good stylist really helps, but I have trouble finding one. Any suggestions?
I think the best way is to ask around. If you see a lady with hair like yours that looks good, ask who her stylist is.
Would love to know why you use a dry shampoo like Living Proof instead of their texturizing spray to give your hair a boost. I haven’t found LP dry shampoo to give me any extra body, maybe I’m doing it wrong?
Dry shampoo coats the hair and gives mine tons of body. I’m not looking for texture, just bulk.
Aha! Thank you!
Try Monat hair products they really work great for tons of people. It helps thicken and grow hair
I just saw someone thanking a friend for introducing them to Monat. The teenage daughter had hair loss related to an illness and those products helped her.
Great video! Have you ever tried Big Sexy Hair (I know, ridiculous name) powder for volume? I have trouble tolerating breathing all the aerosols. I’ve also found a scalp darkening product called Hair Veil that really helps hide the little bald patches. Thanks for sharing!
I have not. Thanks for the suggestion. Aerosols are really unhealthy to breathe.
Hi Jennifer, are you still using minoxidil?
Yes, 5% liquid twice a day. My hair needs all the help I can give it
From an earlier post about your hair care, I bought the Minoxdil, used it a couple of times and then had to stop using it because it is not for people with heart issues. I have already had 2 heart surgeries this year, so everyone please be aware to not use Minoxidil if you have any such issues. Good luck all.
I was not aware of that! Thank you so much for letting us know!
I have the same problems like you incl. Thyroid but I was told that as much I do as worst my hair will be.
Isn’t it too much what you put on your hair which is not good for the scalp and latter is the A and O for healthy hair. Anyway you are lucky to find at least a good hair dresser and the cut is really helpful for thin hair. Suits you well and I also like the unstyled one (1st pic in the video before your dried the hair)…very modern and chic
Thank you for this post. I enjoy your blog very much, but have never posted before. However, I know how much our hair defines us and how much I want my hair to look good every day! I loved your tips and appreciated the video. My hair has always been extra fine and now is thinning with age and the effects of chemo. My hairdresser uses two products I’d like to recommend. First is Catwalk Root Boost by TIGI. It’s about $10 for a fairly large spray can (available in hair salons, drug stores and by Amazon) and lasts a long time. Spray this liberally on the roots of your wet hair and blow dry with your round brush and Jennifer’s techniques. It gives gorgeous lift to my hair and isn’t a “heavy” product that weighs down my fine hair. The other product is Dry Texturizer by Davines. This is expensive, but worth it. After blowing my hair, I spray with this (like Jennifer sprayed with dry shampoo) and then use a pick (or my fingers) to smooth slightly and make the “pieces” go where I want them. The good thing about this product is that you can make your hair look full-bodied and tousled without weighing it down. I follow with a light coating of hair spray. So, no helmet hair, but the lift lasts. And, last but not least, a great haircut is what makes it all work. I have found that working with the way my hair grows and not trying to force it to be something it isn’t (full, curly, thick) makes it behave better. I get lots of compliments on my new, messier hair.
Thanks for sharing your products! I agree, tousled is a much fuller look for me too:)
Thank you for the video. You did an awesome job. Thank you for addressing an issue that is very emotional for a lot of older women, including myself.
Not only have I experienced hair loss from menopause and hypothyroidism, but now as a long term side effect from Covid. Itās very concerning and stressful and your blog/ video was just what I needed right now.
Iām so sorry youāre struggling. Hang in there Donna xx
Jennifer as usual you are the best. I donāt have
thin hair- my hairdresser says I have alot but it is
flat!! Better when she does it but not great. I
think some of your tips and products may
work as well, for a flat hair like me!
They will! Especially the direction you let the hair cool and the dry shampoo! Let me know how it goes.
Thank you for the video. I have a thyroid issue and my hair was falling out. I discovered a product called Neocell. They sell it on Amazon. My hair doesn’t fall out when I wash it. My nails are also stronger. I buy it on Amazon. Matter of fact, I get it monthly. I also use Raw Calcium. My friend told me about it. She had a bad bone density a couple years ago. Now her bone density is normal.
Thanks for sharing your products. I’ve never heard of raw calcium. Off to google it now!
Which Neocell product do you use, there are so many to choose from. I ordered the Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Calcium, hope that’s the right one. Thanks. Deb
Hi Jennifer. So I just watched your video – thank you for that. I also have the exact same hair as you. And I also use the Kevin Murphy anti-gravity. I just love that stuff. But I’m having a hard time finding it. Amazon only has one left. Do you have a particular place you purchase yours at?
My stylist now carries it as well. Google which salons in your area carry it.
My hair is fine and my hairline is receding in the same place yours is. So far, I’m able to style it to cover the situation and color gives it more body. I do LOVE that Aveda Air Control spray and have been using it for quite a while. Light but holds just enough. Great video!
This was very helpful! Thank you. My hair is thinner than yours, but I do have wave and some body. I have to use hair fibers to fill in thin spots in the front. Iām going to look into the dry shampoo. Iām afraid most days I have helmet hairš
Helmet hair is just fine in my book š
I also have baby fine, poker straight hair. Do you wash and dry your hair every day? If not, how does it look the next day?
I try to wash it every other day. The second day, I add more dry shampoo but it is flatter.
Thank you for this tutorial. I also have fine hair, thyroid issues also. At age 74 I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the hair that is coming out. You gave some great tips, I appreciate you taking the time.
Happy and Blessed Easter
Happy Easter!
Beautiful and helpful video, and a beautiful person. Thank you for these tips and the time you take to inform us. So appreciated.
Thanks so much XX
Thank you for sharing your styling techniques through the video. I have the opposite problems with my hair in that it is big and course. However, I certainly appreciate knowing that I am not alone in using many products and spending more time than I ever imagined I would at my over-65 age on my hair. Your video was very well done.
If you are feeling adventuresome, you might consider platelet rich plasma or fibrin injections with Acell for hair growth where you are thinning at the front.
Hi Jennifer,
I’m brand new to your blog today! And, I’m thrilled to see this post as my first one! I too, have very baby fine hair, but a lot of it, so I’ve been told by many stylists. But now mine is thinning too. I loved your video and your list of products. I am usually too lazy to use any products, even though I have a ton in my cabinet. I do really need to do more with my hair and your video has inspired me! Thank you.
I’m curious; why do you use dry shampoo everyday? I’ve used it many times before, but only when I don’t want to wash my hair for a few more days.
Welcome! The dry shampoo adds body and bulk to the roots and hair so it gives lift.
Oh, okay! Thank you. I’ll have to try that.
I also have fine thin hair, a body wave helps, but I like it straight with the body wave to thicken it, color also helps. Two products I always use after shampoo are MARK ANTHONY INSTANT THICK VOLUME CREAM IN A TUBE, I work it through wet hair on top and sides, then comb out, after that I put on make up and then use PAUL MITCHELL’S INVISIBLE VOLUME WHIP FOAM, a GREAT HAIR THICKENER a salon stylist told me about, it really does thicken
your wet hair before the blow dry. Sometimes I use hairspray but not much after the volume whip.
That volume whip is a miracle worker!
Jennifer,
Do you think the Kevin Murphy volumizer is only good for fine, thin hair? My thinning hair is rather coarse with some natural curl and I donāt know if this would work for me. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing these! I’ve always struggled with very fine, thin hair and I’m always on the hunt for new products!
I hope you like these. Dry shampoo is a real game-changer for me.
I love your hairstyling video!! I don’t have your same problem, but I certainly have problems of another nature with my hair. Thanks for sharing. I would love to see other instructional videos from you….
Iām going to try making more, and smile next time š
Thank you so much Jennifer for the excellent post. I have very fine thinning hair and l am seeing a dermatologist and trying the products he recommended for three months. He said it was very common for women in my age group 57 to experience hair loss. But treatment is expensive so l might be looking at wigs too soon:) What is useful to pass on check your vitamin levels when you get your blood work checked as they do make a difference to hair growth and health. Happy day !
This might be the best, most enjoyable and most helpful video on hairstyling Ive ever seen. I look online CONSTANTLY for help with my fine, stick straight, thinning hair. I swear mine is an exact clone of yours!
I can’t thank you enough for sharing this. It made me smile, laugh and feel so so so much better about the hair I have and how I can help it look better without a ton of work, and it will give me a confidence boost as well.
You are definitely a GOAT in my book, Jennifer!
Lol, Iām so glad you liked it:). I need to remember to smile in videos. Hair loss really beats on our confidence so Iām happy to do anything I can to help! Xx
Thank you for sharing how you style your hair. I have always had straight thick coarse hair. The gray hair started in my 30’s , so I have always colored it and it has given me body. My gray hair has been coming in baby fine, so adjusting to this complete change has been hard. Now well past menopause, my hair is all gray and over time the top is thinning. The rest is not thinning much at all. So my top is getting to be a problem.
I’m thinking about Rogain, but wonder about irritation from both products? Have you noticed any? I tried to grow out my gray but my top looked thinner with no color. I may try some of your suggestions here.
I use menās 5% ROGAINE liquid morning and night and have had no reactions other than my hair thinning has slowed down. Iād highly suggest you ask your Dr about trying it.
Thank you Jennifer. This is great video, and information. I have always had fine blond hair. Mine went to a darker blond in my forties, now I am getting some grays and some curl. I have a tall forehead and a receding hairline (female pattern baldness). The changes as we age. I use menās Rogaine . I am always trying different volumizing products. May have to try the Kevin Murphy products. My favorite hairspray is Get Layered by Sexy Hair.
I use the menās Rogaine 5% too. Iām trying it all!
Thank you for the very informative article. I had not related my hair loss with the thyroid issues I have been dealing with the last two years. I’ve also gone au natural with my colour and had put the changes in my hair down to that. I now have lots of avenues to try. The only thing I have to add is I’ve switched to a boar hair brush and find less tug and pull and I think less hair breakage.
Have the Dr do a complete thyroid panel and not just the TSH. There can be lots to be learned by testing all the functions and how the ratios relate to each other.
Thanks for the response, it could possibly help others. I have been through a hyperthyroid diagnosis , thyroid ablation which causes hypothyroidism and then over a year of dosage changes to get the thyroid replacement right. Hopefully it’s good for now. I was surprised to see how many ladies have mentioned thyroid issues here today. Perhaps another posting to consider.
You’ve had a rough time of it, I’m sorry, Linda. Our thyroids are so fragile and critical. I hope you’ve got things sorted now.
I enjoyed your post. I too have thin, fine hair along with a high forehead. I recently started trying collagen. My life got easier when I started wearing wigs. Not only does it take years off of me, but I get stopped constantly by women who want to know where I get my hair done, can they take pictures to show their stylist.
Iām hoping the collagen will help me too:)
I really liked your video and thinning hair. I too have thinning, fine (albeit a lot of hair), and poker straight. Even before my hair started thinning, I have been using this trick. First I use volumizing mousse and let it soak in for a couple of minutes. Then, I bend over and let my hair fall toward the floor and blow dry. I just use my hands to fluff it up and out. When it is nearly dry, I stand up, dry a bit while moving it into the style I am wanting. Then I bend over again and use good old Paul Mitchel maximum hold hair spray (not aerosol) all over, stand up (hair is definitely fluffy) and run my hand through to arrange and respray. Works for me.
I love the sound of your technique!! Thanks for sharing it
I too have thin straight hair, although when cut short it is curlier. I have been wearing it in a short bob for the last 6 months. My last stylist advised me not to wash every day, so now I actually go all week without washing it. I know it sounds strange, I didn’t believe it at first either. I do use a dry shampoo on the third day and then every day until I wash it. What shampoo do you use, and do you use a conditioner – I no longer use one as it was just weighing my hair down so much. My best friend is hairspray and I always carry a travel size in my purse in case I get caught in the wind or it goes flat midday…my daughter can always tell where I’ve been as she recognizes the scent.
Thank you Jennifer! I look forward to watching the video later this afternoon. Have a glorious day and thank you for being my favorite blogger!
You are the best!š
Can you post pics of side and back to take to my hairdresser? They are always in a hurry and won’t watch the youtube video .
I will try to get some snaps of it.
Thanks for sharing, Jennifer. Thinning hair is not an issue for me, but I was interested to hear how many women only wash their hair every three days.I’m a lifelong every-other-day shampooer, but in the last six months I have stretched it to every three days. As I get older it seems I don’t need to wash as often.
Anyone else find that to be the case?
Yes…absolutely. And now that I’m not working, I don’t feel as compelled to wash it daily. It’s much healthier now. š
You are awesome! Thank you for sharing — I have exactly your hair and losing at the temples…I know I need to get it shorter to keep it from looking like Tom Petty by noon! Your video was wonderful!!!!!!
LOL, I loved Tom Petty š I like my hair a bit longer too but it looks so much thicker now that I’ve had a few inches taken off.
My hair is VERY similar to yours. I have taken a page of notes while watching – pausing – watching this extremely helpful video. I think I will probably watch again as I style my hair today! Also I’ve been looking for a new way to cut my hair, and you explained yours so well. You have the look I’m going for, I’m excited to know it will work for my hair! Thanks!
I too have thyroid issues and very fine hair. When I started thinning at the crown, it was noticeable within a few months. I started using womenās Rogaine (subscription from the Rogaine website) foam and in 6 months, Iām practically back to my old head of hair. It takes me about 15 minutes per day to use, because I do section my hair and rub it into the scalp. Iāve had zero irritation or problems. The bit of residue at the root took a little getting used to as I donāt like the feel of products in my hair, but itās no worse than many root lifters in feel. My hair washing habits didnāt need to change. Highly recommend that people give it a try.
Thank you for this post and video – I’m going to try the anti gravity gel as I struggle with hair styling and thinning hair. I’d love to see a post about your eye and eyebrow make up products and styling š
I discovered your blog about two weeks ago and todayās opening statement really got me. First of all, Iām 5ā2āā with broad shoulders, a long torso and narrow hips, petite 4 on the bottom and a size 8 on top. I also have baby fine, straight, thin hair, so everything you say relates to me personally. Thank you so much for your great insights today on hair and for your fashion tips. I will continue to look forward to my daily AWSL fix!!!
P.S. We also love to go places with our travel trailer.
Thanks for being part of our community, Jan š
Excellent styling tips for all of us!!!!!!!
Love your hair style. I have curly hair with straight sides.
I too wear it in a style very much like yours. Lots of product.
You gave me some great tips that will help out with this combo hair of mine.
Thanks.
thanks for the video! i have coarse hair, perfectly straight. I am thinning on top in the front, like a man’s hair does. I am jusing a thickening product by Aveda which seems to give me some lift. I like your hair spray trick! i will try that and see if it works. I tend not to use a lot of product since I only wash my hair every 3 days.
I love the smell of Aveda products.
Enjoyed the video Jennifer. I also have thinning hair. I dry mine similar to how you do and then put in three large velcro rollers at the top and each side. I leave them in while I go about other things in the morning – about 15 minutes and it gives me great volume! LIke you, I don’t brush all the way through when I take them out. I don’t use a dry shampoo, but I use Kenra’s volumizing hair spray underneath near the roots and then lightly over the top. This also ensures that my style stays full all day.
When my hair was longer I did the same with Velcro rollers. They really do the trick!
Thank you for this! I too have the baby fine, stick straight thin hair like you and I always struggle with styling and haircuts. I just had my stylist move away and am on the search for a new one which I’m sure you can understand is a very daunting experience. I will try the dry shampoo when styling, I only wash my hair every other day and usually will use dry shampoo on the second day to give it some lift.
Good luck on your search. It took me almost two years after our move to find this gal.
I have fine and thin hair too. After chemo my hair grew in healthier and I think not coloring it makes it appear thicker. I always had hair almost exactly like yours but now I can’t seem to grow it out because it gets so thin on the ends. I feel I will be stuck with a pixie forever! The only good thing is it’s a lot easier to style now. I use Kenra Curl Glaze Mousse. Really helps.
Pixie cuts are cute and easy. I wish one looked better on me
This was an awesome video..thank you for sharing as I too have thin fine hair and have to use hair products to get body. I’m curious if you have to wash your hair everyday? When I use dry shampoo, it makes my hair feel heavy and weighted so I quit using it. Maybe I’m using too much. I need to invest in a round roller as mine is half moon shape and wondering if a round would give me more body. My hair usually gets stuck in a round one so that’s why I quite using one…LOL And…that blue sweater is so pretty on you too.
I try to go two days between shampoos. The second day never looks as āfluffyā but I sense itās better to give my hair a rest.
Totally appreciated this video Jennifer as to how you style your hair and the products used. My forehead has always been similar to yours and I particularly like your wisp of bangs though I do wear my hair parted ‘n smooth with an angle cut from the chin to the ears allowing it to be worn behind the latter for a different look. However, due to so many lock downs its style has slightly changed which I find is taking less maintenance. i.e.: Sides and front have remained pretty well the same but now I wear it considerably shorter in the back where it always appeared to grow faster and texture always seemed thicker; which results in less salon visits as can trim the front ‘n sides myself. Also as I dye my own hair it is quicker to do plus now it is closer to a wash ‘n wear, with a quick blow dry and just a light touch-up (mostly on the ends) with a curling iron. -Brenda-
P.S.: I agree that products used does make a difference and will definitely look into the Dry Shampoo that you recommend as feel for myself, it would be ideal for emergency use.
I have thinning hair as well. I had chemo and also Hashimotoās so itās been a battle. I did find a shampoo and conditioner that are helping on Amazon. Itās called Purador and I also use Hair Biology thickening treatment as well. These products have helped a lot!
Hope this information helps someone else as well!!
I love your style and color!!
Iāve been very curious about Hair Biology. I see a lot of influencers working with them. Which product do you like?
I have been known to trim my hair too but try to control the urge because my results are seldom stellarš
Through your blog, I discovered the amazing Kevin Murphy anti-gravity spray! It is a bit expensive but I may use a total of 4 quick shots each time I style my hair. The lasting lift and body are simply wonderful. After blow drying my hair, I try to finish the styling with my fingers. My hair is shoulder length with bangs. I lift the front section loosely with my fingers and spray and do the same with the back, crown area. I can go 3 days before a full shampoo is necessary. On day 3 , I usually do a soft up style, using a hair clip.
Love your video and product reviews!
His products are fantastic!! I usually use his hairspray but ran out so Iām finishing up whatās under the sink.
I just have to say that reading all the comments from your viewers is so heartwarming. Dealing with thinning hair can be such a personal misery and even difficult to talk about with others. I feel such a kinship with all these ladies and really appreciate that you opened this dialogue. Thank you for sharing your journey and giving us all good, solid ideas to manage our own unique journey.
I’m so proud of this community for sharing honestly. It helps us all!!
I too, had experienced the dreaded āfive headā balding temple spots and started taking Natureās Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails a couple of years ago. AMAZINGLY, I have new growth in the temple area, my hair feels thicker, nails grow longer, and any skin improvement is just a bonus!
I can relate to this post, thanks so much.
Have been using Mens Rogaine for years and it maintained my hair thickness, even though I’ve never had a lot of hair. I have course, not fine hair, and low thyroid. Curious if you stopped using Rogaine as discussed in a previous post.
I use a similar hair tool. Does this act as a hair dryer? Hard to tell.
Would love a follow up post to see how Nutrafol works for some.
Happy Spring!
I am still using Rogaime and have been taking Nutrafol for the last 6 months. I canāt really say that I see an improvement from the Nutrafol so will give it a it longer. Itās expensive so if the verdict is no I will stop.
Thank you so much great tips! I have very similar hair.
I’ve been looking forward to this post! Thank you for your excellent tips. My gray hair is thinning and dry – lack of hormones, age, and thyroid issues. I’ve been blowing my hair dry with my head upside down and it sometimes even gets too poofy. I’ll try your method. I don’t use any gel or product other than conditioning oil, so I’ll look into those products. I’ve seen excellent reviews for R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening shampoo and conditioner and am probably going to order the travel sizes to try them out. Any other tips are appreciated. Thank you again.
I tried upside down too but my bangs in front always ended up looking goofy on me.
I enjoyed watching the video. I donāt have baby fine hair but Iām not good at styling my hair. I just had my hair cut this week and my stylist did a beautiful blowout. He told me…lots of hair product so I need to make some additional purchases.
Products have come a lot way so the more the merrier is working for me
Your hair looks lovely and thatās a great cut. Iām a brunette, age 59 and I too have always had baby fine straight hair and I guess Iām experiencing hair loss. Itās thinner at the top.
Iāve used henna as a natural thickener and been very happy with it. Real henna adds red highlights which always looked really nice and natural. Now I have enough white hairs that Iām afraid of too much red so I switched to āneutral hennaā which is technically not henna but a different plant. It also makes the hair thicker but adds no color. I buy it on Amazon. Itās very inexpensive.
I didnāt know that about henna. Thanks for sharing Marian
Thank you for sharing your cut and style tips! Your hair looks beautiful! I also have baby fine hair, but learned a few years ago just how curly it is. I always thought it was just annoyingly wavy in certain places. My stylist at the time (still miss her since she moved across country) convinced me to go from a bob to adding in some layers for volume. As she was cutting, spirals started popping up all over! She was so surprised, she called over the other stylists. It took me some time to find the right products for curly, fine hair (as evidently most curly girls have medium to course hair), but I now only wear it curly. Itās by far easier, as on humid TX days it will only curly up anyway. I wear it in a similar cut to yours (I think), and when exercising, weekends, and actually most days since COVID quarantine began, I just put on a cute headband to hold my bangs back and keep it off my face and neck.
Iām 48, was diagnosed with Hashimotoās hypothyroidism last year and my hormones have always been wacky. Iām now experiencing hair thinning, especially at the crown and it separates like a new cowlick is suddenly there. Iām going to try the products you mentioned, as my current root lifter is doing nothing there. My gynecologist (a complimentary Med) just recommended a supplement called NUTRAFOL Womenās Balance. I just started it this week, so canāt attest to its effectiveness yet. Iām going to give it 3-6 months and then assess with before and after pics. Itās pricey, but I figure if it works, less expensive than other options down the line. Besides vitamins & minerals your hair needs, it contains some herbs, so youād want to check with your doctor or research on WebMD/other sites for any interactions if youāre taking any meds.
Hope this helps others.
I hope it works for you. I started the Nutrafol several months ago and think I am seeing some thickening, but it’s really too soon to say for sure.
Would love to see a picture! My hair is more on the straight side with a wavy ness in parts. Going to the beautiful parlor tomorrow and want to have a picture. Thanks.
I am growing my fine hair back into a layered bob after having it short for a while. I have a square face and it never really looked right so short. Luckily Lockdown has given me a few months to grow it! I recently found a shampoo that has made my hair feel so much fuller and glossy. Its expensive but I would not use anything else now. Its a company called Hairstory.com. I use the original shampoo, no need for conditioner and a spray some Lift to build volume.
Thank you for this! Found your post via Pinterest. Have been searching for so long for a style that will work with my thin, straight, fine hair. I’m also now sporting a double chin in addition to my square jaw, and sadly, not many older overweight women blog about haircuts.
So, I’m going to show this to my stylist and see if it might work for me!
Blessings!
I hope it works for you Reta. Let me know how it goes. Remember the products for lift are very important too.
I finally tried a more expensive stylist who actually takes his time and I get a really good cut.
He costs more but I walk out happy with my hair.
These chain beauty shops hire people who cut hair in 10 minutes or so.
I have the thin fine hair too.
I use products to help with volume , makes all the difference !
I also have fine, thin hair. Spent a fortune trying to make it into something it couldn’t be. Between a major surgery, menopause and moving to sticky Florida I discovered wigs(and some awesome YouTube wig sites)15 years ago. Hot flashes-no problem. Drizzle that used to turn my hair to glue-not even fazed by it anymore. When you take the time to really look at the options you’ll feel like a new woman. Literally.
Thanks for sharing, Laurie. I’m sure you are not alone with that.
Awesome ! I have several wigs as well and love them! How do you find wearing them in hot humid Florida though? I live in NY and am pretty uncomfortable in Summer! But otherwise they have lifted my self esteem !
I too am sick of my Fine, Straight as a stick,Thinning badly hair!!! I feel so ugly I donāt want to go out anywhere. My stylist is good but cannot seem to help me,very frustrated!
I feel the same way! I wish there was some help out there for women!
Sandy, I am in the exact same shape as you. My hair is fine and stick straight! Even my hair stylist says my hair is thinner than it’s ever been! I have to take a lot of medicine so maybe that’s why. I have tried getting body waves and all they do is fry my hair. I wear wigs sometimes but my head really itches bad most of the time.
I also have fine then hair. I have mine cut short and layered threw out everywhere. Are use mousse gel and Got To B Glued. But I think these products are to heavy on my fine hair and weight it down. Going to try the powder for volumizing and mousse for thickening. I also have been thru many stylists and now I have one for the past 20 years and she does a wonderful job.
Let me know how you do with the powder. It adds tons of lift to my hair.
Next time you get your hair cut snd styled, maybe you could film it? Many of us would like to see what you mean by a disconnected haircut. Thanks!
I’d like to see that too! I’d love to know how you style it.
Describes my hair to a tee !!! I have a heart-shaped face.
I finally have a stylist who knows how to cut fine, thin, board-straight hair. Back in the 80s, I knew a lady who did what I asked and layered the top all the way to the crown for me with slightly uneven layering for texture. I got tons of volume without the mullet effect. Permed and stacked just above the shoulder in the back. I actually had popular girls copying me. š¤£. (I was a geek and a nerd.). Until recently, NO hairdresser would do the top like that again for me, so my hair always fell flat unless I teased a weak pompadour. (It was awful. I lived in ponytails and french twists for most of the next 30 years.). New hairdresser, I asked for a Pixie and the layered top. She did question it, but did not argue when I explained the reason. She said she knew exactly what I was talking about and was willing to try as long as I would not be upset if it did not turn out the way I expected. (She was awfully sweet.). When finished, she gushed and gushed about it being a brilliant idea and was going to try and talk some of her clients into letting her try it on them as well. She even called over other hair dressers to explain the technique ! So, she is my forever hair dresser, even if one of us moves. š¤£. I let her experiment with other cuts and we try colors. She tells me up front if a fashion color is wrong for my complexion or if a shampoo (like purple toner) will give me the color Inwant and how to achieve/maintain rather than charge me for a dye job. (She still has to highlight for me, so she still gets good money and I tip her well.)
My hair is growing out for a bit to see if I am up for caring/styling again, so I will be going in to get my roots done and highlights added. A pixie (for me) has to be darker so I donāt have to go more often to maintain the cut. It sure is fun to have one though.
You have found a real winner!! I know you know how lucky you are:)
Can you send a photo of your haircut. I have the same kind of hair and have given up.
My hair has a similar texture to yours and I appreciate your need to travel to get the right cut. I recently moved and was getting so irked by haircuts that chop my fine hair I was considering buying a wig!!! I don’t want a super short cut and yours is lovely. I will take your description of a disconnected cut with me. Do you know if it is called anything else? I also love those green-rimmed glasses your have in one of your other posts… …Very flattering. Dare I ask who makes them? Thank you for your posts. When we become “of an age” it doesn’t mean shlubby, but rather elegance prevails.
Iāve only heard it called disconnected but it may have another name. My frames are by Aspire. I love them.
I am so glad i saw this post. My hair is thinning as well. I have about the same hairstyle. The products are very hard to find. Amazon is ridiculous. I don’t mind spending the money if it works,I will be following this threat for suggestions. Thank you so much!
The product is so important to add volume. I’m not afraid to layer many on to give the illusion of lift.
Your description is exactly mine on the hair we have. For me, my interest since o can remember was to grow up and be a stylist. For over 45 years, I received the clients like us. I became sincerely well skilled while I lived in Fla. I believe in layers, and slightly shorter(NOT HACKED!) around the top, crown area. Also, a lot of times, dimensional coloring w/ blonde swelling the cuticle( outer layer) of the hair helps volume. The volume of peroxide should be analyzed correctly. We do not need 20 volume to deposit some of those darker blonde dimensional low light coloring. As a car accident ended my career, I DID discover products that I absolutely love. Kenra. You can cocktail these and they are wonderful. I especially love their Dry Texture Wax for volume. Not greasy- DONāT mistake the word āwaxā. Itās like no other product. Also 25 Level( higher #-more strength and holding power) can hold and layer beautifully. I sound like a Kenra Representative, don’t I? I sincerely guarantee you that I am not! Those are only 2 of the products. I am a person who always says ā I was born with 4 hairs on my head and a desire to do hair!āā
Hey there, I appreciate your comment & tried to find Kenra texture wax #25 . Cannot find on Amazon or the Kenra website. Please, please advise. Ty much!
Ulta carries Kendra products in California.
I agree with you about the Kendra products. My hairstylist (of about 20 years and who herself has rattail thin hair) has taught me that for our fine thin hair, a good cut AND the right product is absolutely necessary to give us volume. She has been using Kendra Volume Mousse #17 on my hair for years and it really works. A layered haircut on me is not great because the bottom layer is so thin it can be seen through, although the lift is great!
I too have thin hair. Always have since I was in my teens. I’ve done almost everything I thought I could to get it thick but as soon as I walk out the door it would go thin and limp. Sucks. Now I’m going through menopause and I had cut my hair but when I get my hot flashes I sweat so back I have to pin up my hair with tons of pins just to get it off my face and neck.
I’ve decided to try and let my hair grow some so that I can pin it. I guess it won’t matter what I put on my hair, once it gets wet, I’m done so pin it all ALL the time.
The hair style you have is the one I got. You look great with that hair cut. Beautiful indeed.
It’s a great style, thanks Sara
Gosh at long last have found out that i am not the only one with crazy straight fine hair. Just lucky enough that now in my 70’s my hair not thinning and very little grey. Products to help styling just gunk up my hair that i need to was it often. thanks for all the advice.
Oh boy, did I identify with everything you said about this fine hair!!! Well, your hair looks lovely, so old stylist it is!. Like me I have tried every haircut, every product, but I am back to a shortish bob, with foils every few months for body. And you are so right, a good cut is everything!! Thanks for your post!
Enjoyed reading your blog. Four hours is a long trip, Jenniffer but I understand the need to get it right. Whenever I’ve moved to somewhere new I would look at women’s hair and when I would notice an exceptional cut I’d politely ask where she had it cut and with which stylist. Many times I’d get the same hair salon, Google them and give it a try. It’s basically the adage “seeing is believing.”
Looking for a style that will look good with straight and thin hair with no body and naturally letting it dry?
If youāre not wanting to work with styling tools as it dries youāll have an almost impossible time getting any lift, in my experience.
I think even without tools you can get lift using the right products and you fingers. Dry shampoo, a little mouse,a good manipulator(bed head). and a total body cream. Using a small amount of listed products and finally the cream as hair is drying put on each product, while bending head in seated position. Finger; scrunch finger, scrunch use fingers as comb. A light comb. Bam you will have what looks like double the hair and using dry shampoo as a texturizing product. The manipulator and ur manipulation with fingers. Is key.
With this Covid thing it is hard to get to a stylist, and finding a new one would be difficult for sure. I have not been out of my yard since Feb. 3 and am still petrified to go anywhere. But I have to fix these Gray roots – I can hardly look at myself in the mirror. I thought maybe now is the time to just go natural, but I don’t have that white hair that looks great on a lot of people, it’s sort of salt & pepper so I will try to work up the courage to colour it myself! And as someone already pointed out, hot rollers are great! It’s so true – when your hair is bad, you feel bad too.
I thought the same thing, but once I let my hair grow out and go completely natural, I was pleasantly surprised. The salt and pepper looks a lot like I have highlights in my hair. My gray is not quite as silver as I would like, but I can live with it. I found that if I tried to do it myself, the red in my hair turned carrot orange and when the sun got to it, it looked like a copper penny. Itās a great look for pennies, but not so much for hair. I also noticed that my hair kept getting thinner. However, I do like the cut you described. I have been going to the same stylist for 40 years. Maybe she can try it with mine. Good luck, whichever way you decide to go.
I’m letting my hair go gray after years of coloring it. It hasn’t been colored since Feb. so what was med brown is now an awful shade of what my husband describes as copper! Not the look I’m going for. I’m committed to letting it go natural since it has grown out so much already, but I have a long way to go! I was able to get a cut (looks like salons might get shut down again!). I too have thinning fine hair with some curl. I like the cut you have shown. I feel like after I do whatever I can with it in the am I don’t want to look at it again for the rest of tday!
I am in the market for some hot rollers right now
Have you tried low-lights with the color of your darkest hair color? It definitely makes it look like highlighted hair and you don’t have the color marks at the roots when it is growing out. Try it, think you will be pleasantly surprised.
I’m trying neora prolux serums to restore hair to original color. It fixes texture and no more having to color. Most of my thinning and the few grays I had are improving. Using the whole system. I’ll see in 3 months even more results hopefully.
Salt and pepper is a nice look!
I, too have fine hair but always had a lot of it until the past 2 years. I dread every time I wash it because I have to contend with how much is falling out. I can run my fingers through my hair and at least 10 to 15 hair strands will come out. I think this style would help conceal the thinning hair. I also endured the Toni perms. They were awful.
Have you tried Rogaine? It really helps me.
Bosley shampoo (+other Bosley products if you need them) have helped my thinning hair. I use it about 3x wk. but shampoo is all I use. I find that the other products I’ve tried make my hair oily like in my teens!! š Good luck!
My doctor recommended Rogaine for me and said that I could use the men’s product. I haven’t done it yet, the price kind of put me off when I wasn’t even sure it would work. When I read your post about your hair, I thought to myself, finally someone with hair exactly like mine!! I love your style but I live and work on a ranch and it’s more convenient to wear it a little longer so I can put it up most of the time. My son’s getting married in September (fingers crossed that we won’t still be sheltering in place), and I’m wondering what I can do with my hair so that I can look “together” for the entire afternoon and evening.
You could still wear it up for the wedding. I think that can be a very elegant look. Sometimes, simple is best.
I work in dermatology. Definitely use minoxidil (the generic rogaine). Generic will save you $ and is same as brand. Make sure it is 5%, which is usually the menās line. Anything less will not work. Donāt bother with a treatment shampoo because it doesnāt sit on scalp any length of time to be effective. What ever you use needs to be a leave in treatment on the scalp not hair! Once you start using it donāt be afraid if you think more hair than usual is falling out. Minoxidil will synchronize hair growth. Those extra hairs were on their way out anyway. Once you stop using minoxidil you will return to the original pattern of hair loss. Hope this helps!
CVS and Walmart have their own brands of Rogaine that are very cost effective and, for me, work as well as the name brand. I have all kinds of new baby hairs growing around my hairline
I’m so happy to hear it’s working for you too!
Try finding a web site or even reach out to Rogaine and ask for coupons and samples
We moved from Illinois to Oregon. I have tried a few stylists here and have yet to find one who can come close to what I want. I gave up for awhile with one stylist and let her do her thing. My stylist in Illinois was great with fine, straight, flat hair. It always looked great. Finding a new stylist after thirty years with one was one of my biggest fears of moving. After the ‘stay at home’ ends I think I will have to begin searching again. š
Good luck Jan, the struggle is real!
I live in Corvallis Oregon, have fine thin straight hair. And have a great stylist if you need a recommendation. She calls the style mentioned here, a bob with layers.
I have fine hair also and this cut sounds like just what I need. I don’t always have time to style my hair and just let it dry naturally. Can I do this with this type of cut?
Thanks
This would be very flat if I didnāt blow dry it.
Lol…Im reading your article, and I swear its been the exact same steps for me, starting with the Toni perm. Tucking hair behind my ears, a side part, a little teasing in the front….In discussing my last haircut with my hairdresser, just before vacation in early March, we agreed on the double layers in the back also. She said, like a Mullet, so I guess its a new version for the 2020s. My hair has been coming out for the Last 7 months ( stress) and getting thin so Im probably going to do a major cut when the salons open. Too bad, this cut has been great and I think I will miss it.
My layers have grown out while home so I need some serious help too! Good luck
I had the same stylist for 4 years and and always got a great cut. Until one day he gave me a terrible cut so I never went back. I have heard this has happened to other customers too, good cuts for a few years, then one day a hack job!
Itās happened to me often so I think itās common. I guess everyone has an off day:)
Hi Jenn,
How do I āfireā my stylist? She has me hooked three months in advanced! Yikes!
Call and cancel – say you’ll call and reschedule when you have your appt book handy. gotta go, bye!
I also drove 85 miles to a stylist until I got tired of it and forced myself to find someone closer. I get a good cut now but I have to come home and restyle it myself!
I’m sure that will happen for me but for now, I am playing it safe
Oh my gosh
I go home and restyle after a cut as well. I do get a good cut but it is never styled the way I like and the way I feel comfortable in. I have dreams of a makeover but will I have to go home and restyle?
So true! I always restyle my hair too.
I’ve been going to the same stylist for about 30 years, and I still go home and restyle!
YOu’re right. You can show stylists photos up the kazoo and it’s till i,possible for them to get it right. It’s like me trying to paint like Money. Not gonna happen. I think it’s worth the drive to go back to the stylist who cut it the way you liked it. Make a lovely day of it.
So true. They seem to have an agenda all their own.
When I would go to my hair dresser I too would try to fix it different. Since she could not style it the way I liked, she would give me everything I needed while I did my hair myself.
I met many, many lovely hairstylists when we moved to the Pacific Northwest nine years ago. Not one of them was able to cut my hair, so now I travel to the Sassoon Salon in Seattle to get my haircut. Happy, happy happy.
That sounds like a great plan!!
I drive 50 miles each way to my stylist in Eugene, Oregon and have for 15 years. She knows me and my hair. I’d rather find a new gynaecologist than a new stylist.
She once mentioned to me she has a client who flys in from Alaska every 10 weeks!
She sounds pretty amazing. I feel in good company traveling to see my stylist. It’s a long day on the road but so worth it.
A stylist who listens and can style fine hair is worth the trip! I’ve had baby fine straight hair my whole life and now that it’s gray its fine with a wave. Go figure, I wore my hair in a layered bob but I tried a short pixie and love it. It’s neat, tidy and little bit sassy in our humid climate here in Georgia. Our hair like makeup and attire are important to our confidence and joy.
You’re so right Cathy. Our hair can make or break our confidence.
I am moving to a new state and scared to try and find someone who can cut my fine, thin hair into a easy Bob.
I just moved from NY to DC area, at the peak of the pandemic. My worst fear is finding a stylist for a good cut and style for my fine, straight hair! I was with the same stylist for 23 yrs! I was just searching on line for a hairdresser, when this post popped up! Fate! Maybe it will bring me good fortune for my hair! I will travel and pay! In NY my cuts were $110! Worth every penny! Thanks for the shares, fellow fine haired gals!
Good luck Stephanie!! Itās so hard to replace a good stylist
It can ruin your confidence. My stylist I had done a great job this past year but all of sudden she cut all my hair off. Even my bangs. Iām devastated. My fine hair does not grow fast at all. It took me 9 months to get the style and length I had. Iām just sick about it!!!
Thatās awful, Iām sorry. Time to embrace hats, brighter lipstick and find a new stylist. Itās so distressing when that happens.
Yes mine to I am now got it long enough to do the bob style I want I am giving her 1 more chance I hope she learn form if .
Fingers crossed
Obviously, you struck a chord with many of us. I’ve followed my stylist everywhere & thus now take a ferryboat to Whidbey Island! It is worth it: the extra time you save not fighting your hair everyday! Less stress for you everyday! I had been keeping my straight hair short & layered for years, but 1 1/2 yrs ago I let it grow out & was shocked to find it was now CURLY. The ONLY pleasant surprise of getting older! Was so surprised to discover that the shape of your follicles can change with age. I love your hair & think you need to show your cut to more local stylists – meanwhile keep commuting!
Lucky you, curly! That would be such a fun discovery after a lifetime of poker straight hair. You do live in a gorgeous part of the country. I love taking those ferries.
Hi there
I can really relate to this blog. I had those perms – ugh. Then when I was living in Toronto in my 20s I went to a salon and wanted a ‘light’ perm – oh my goodness I ended up with what was referred to as an afro. After the initial shock I went back to the salon to try to get it fixed. The stylist couldn’t understand that I wasn’t happy – so I said to her – would you go out on the street looking like this. NO.
Even now I’m still trying to get some consistency with my hair style. It had been turning to hit and miss the past year at the same salon. My stylist went on maternity leave. I tried other stylists there – inconsistent. Recently I tried a new salon. Hopefully it will work out there
Your regular stylist does a fantastic job – worth the drive or as one reader said go directly after getting it done to the new stylist and say this is what I want done.
I had a body wave like that one time which was horrific. They decided to chemically straighten it and most of it fell out. That was not a good year.
Yes, I have medium length blond curly hair which I love for the most part and is what I am known for. It is low maintenance and doesn’t take long to style with a diffuser. I do have quite a collection of hair products though. Always in search of the perfect product or cocktail of products. My hair seems to reject it if I use the same product cocktail two days in a row. Looks great day 1…different story day 2. Hence, my collection of products. I have a stylist who I have been going to for more than 10 years who has curly hair too and she is fast. Highlights, haircut and style in 1.5 hours to 2 hours max. Life is good in the tresses department.
You are so lucky! My old stylist has hair just like me which I think makes a big difference. She knows what it will and won’t do.
Your hair always looks pretty to me. Even though you have mentioned hair thinning, I never thought that when I see your hairstyles.
Ten months ago I went to a new to me hair stylist. I showed her a photograph of myself with a past haircut/style that I really liked. It was a long bob with bangs. I pointed out to her that in the photo it was “very slightly stacked in the back” (those were the exact words I said) and I would like it to be that way again.
She seemed nice enough, but I don’t know what in the world she was thinking. When my haircut was finished and I was handed the mirror to see the back of it. I was speechless. It looked terrifying. The length of the top “stacking” was only about two inches long, and it was a thick layer in my thin hair, right on the back of head.It got worse from there. It was absolutely nothing like the photograph I showed her. It looked like she thought I said for her to stack it to look like I’m on crack. Oh, it was horrible, for months, and months, and months. I think my knee replacement surgery and recovery slowed the regrowth of my hair, though I also think there may be a Murphy’s-type law somewhere that says when you get a really, really bad haircut your hair will grow more slowly than it ever did before. It finally grew out enough to have it cut just a couple of weeks ago. I told the new hairdresser (at a different salon) to just give me a plain, one length, almost to the shoulder cut. There is still a bit of difference in the length in the back from the previous hack job, but this hair stylist did an excellent job of making it look good. I am so thankful to have my hair looking normal again.
I don’t understand why it seems like some stylists just refuse to try and do the cut we show them from a photograph of our hair in a style that we liked. Maybe they are just trying to be creative. If they are, I would appreciate them saving their creativity for their own hair.
Ouch! That’s so upsetting. I think many stylists just have no talent. They get minimal training and have at it. I also think they don’t listen and that’s a lack of respect in my opinion. I’m glad it’s looking better now for you. Bad hair really hits our confidence hard.
Love your hairstyle, Jennifer! Merry Christmas!
Thanks Cheryl Ann, I can’t wait until it’s back
My mother and I were looking at some of my childhood pictures when I asked her why my bangs were soooo short. She said she had given me a Tonette perm and burned my hair off! āTonette, with the younger woman in mindā. If you look on YouTube, there are some cute commercials for Tonette perms! Luckily, my hair grew back but itās still stick straight and baby fine.
Sorry to say, I’ve had that same disaster. My mom also used to cut my hair and the bangs were always crooked and miles too short. Luckily it grows but some of my pictures are hilarious.
we have very similar hair and by your description exactly the same cut. I have moved quite a bit and the. Last time my stylist offered to be on call for the new stylist. It worked! I would drive to get a good cut but that last move was 4 hours each way and I couldnāt do that!
Four hours would be pushing it for me too, Catherine.
You donāt feel good if your hair doesnāt look good. I moved 12 hours away from my stylist so I had to get my new one trained right. It took me four years but I finally got her cutting my hair exactly like I like it. We live in a small town and I reall did not have many other options.
Your hair looks great and I would definitely drive two hour shift to keep it the way I wanted it.
I wish I’d been able to get through to this local gal, but honestly, she’s just not that talented. Good for you Debbie!
Small rural town in Colorado! I got lucky with a wonderful stylist! My is a sort of Bob also. I have white and silver striped hair, fine, thin but wavy. The waves always put off stylists but Danita has wavy hair and understands how to dry cut my hair. I use EvolVh Ultrashine shampoo and conditioner, every few times a pump of their protein repair treatment, style with Kenra 6 styling cream, one dime amount mixed with gel. All over my wet hair, comb with wide tooth comb and scrunch my waves back all diffuse with my Dyson.
Your waves sound so wonderful. I would love to have a few š I’ll check out the Kenra 6. What gel do you mix it with?
The blu capelet or shawl in the first photo is a fabulous color, who makes it please? Your hair always looks great in your photos but I hear your pain!
It’s several years old Deanne from a company in England called Catherine Robinson Cashmere. I’m not sure they still make this color but you could google them.
Your new haircut looks great Jennifer! My hair is not really thin but looks like it is thinning which is noticeable on my fine straight hair. I always appreciate your recommendations!
Is the WOW hairspray very scented?
The shine spray has a minimal odor, nothing overpowering but it does have some.
I can relate. I’ve been driving an hour each way for the last few years to get to my old stylist, in very heavy traffic. So I am going to try someone here locally. Yesterday was my last appointment with my stylist, she gave me the formula she uses for my hair color and when I got home I took a few selfies so I can show the new person how my hair looks right after I get it done. My hair is a simple below chin-length bob but I can’t do layering, it just makes my fine hair look thinner. I’m not good at blow-drying. I am probably one of the few people who still uses hot rollers, it gives my very straight hair the body it needs. Hair is so important, if its not right, nothings right.
Good luck Debbie. I hope your new stylist can copy what you have. Non-layered cuts are usually easier for them to get right.
I’m currently experiencing exactly what you’re talking about Jennifer! I think it’s a new trend in haircutting :/
My current cut looks like your first picture and resulted in all of the body being taken out of my hair. My hair is thin only in the front but now my entire head of hair feels thinner than ever after this cut. In the 4th picture down of you, your hair looks beautiful – very full in the back. Is this the front of your old hair or new haircut?
These are my old haircuts before we moved. With fine hair, every hair counts and I wish stylists would be more careful. I’m sorry you’re struggling with this Laurie. It sounds like you need a new stylist.
I love your new haircut on you! It is very flattering and full looking! My hair is fine, thin and wavy which challenges stylists. I wear a sort of Bob also, not quite as short as yours. Too bad we canāt add pictures in comments.
Hi Jennifer. Am I correct that youāre living in the Sacramento-ish area? If so, my aunt has a stylist in Woodland that sheās gone to for years that she swears by and she also has fine, thin hair thatās a little below chin length and always looks good. Let me know if youād like the stylists contact info and Iāll get it from my aunt
Hi Valorie. I am going to stick with my gal for now but will keep your suggestion in mind and may ask for her name later. Thanks!
My hair is thick (not as thick as it used to be though – thanks menopause!) and curly, but very fine. It has to stay short because the weight of it will make it flat and I have to have some height on top! Thank goodness for hair products! BTW Jennifer – I always think your hair looks great!
Hair products to the rescue, Barbara!
I my self have thin hair from Menopause, and try so many tricks in my bag , but the dry shampoo , I’m giving it a try .
thank you so much!! Marilyn.B
I too had lots of hair, but fine and curly. About 65 it started thinning and the frizz, yuck. We have to spend a fortune trying to get the right formula for our individual needs. The best for me is a combo is Routine shampoo & conditioner with Olaplex #6 finish.
I have a theory that stylists create styles the exact opposite of what they themselves have. Hence Christina, with her gorgeous curls, loves blow drying me sleek and straight. Everytime. Nothing like the pictures I show her. Nothing can be done about it. We’ve been friends since our children were born. -Lily
At least it’s just how she blows it out. You can fix that part at home;)
Well, at least I’m not the only one with stylist frustration!
The latest thing after years of going to the same stylist? She suddenly cut my hair about 1/4″ long at the crown. This led it to stick straight up for several months until it regrew. I have no idea why she did this, because I would have said no. Maybe the cut was taking too long?
Now that is sorted, so she cut my bangs crooked. Always something lately.
Sounds like it’s time for a new stylist!
Yes, Jennifer, I will never forget the smell of the Toni perms my mother gave me in attempts to give my fine hair some body! My hair and haircut is very similar to yours. For me, It’s worth the extra cost and 1+ hour drive out of my small town to go to a Gene Juarez salon where my young haircutter seems to know how to give me a cut that makes me feel good about being 62. You look amazing!!!
Thanks, Penny, I hope to get this shape back after some growing time. So glad you’ve found someone who can style it for you. It’s worth the drive!
Do you have the video you mentioned posted anywhere online? I used to wear a very similar haircut, but since I moved I can no longer find anyone who can replicate it, and unlike you, I was not smart enough to take pictures of a fresh cut. Driving to my former stylist is not an option :(.
I didn’t post the video anywhere, sorry. You could show them the photo of the back of my hair which might be a good visual…although it didn’t help me;(
Love the haircut. I have just the opposite hair. Mine is coarse, thick and straight. But thankful for a good hairdresser who gives me a great cut and recommends products. That all being said my hairdresser recently received her Real Estate License and I am always teasing her about making that big sale and no more cutting hair. She said she doesn’t think she can totally give it up though.
Oh, oh…they make a lot more with a real estate sale than cutting hair. For your sake, I hope she stays cutting at least part-time.
Having been extremely dissatisfied with my colorist near my home and my haircutter “retiring to be a new full-time Mom”….I was faced with a similar challenge. Living 75 miles from NYC I chose to try my daughter’s haircutter and salon and have been thrilled ever since. I make the drive every couple of months and try to stretch out in-between colorings/trims etc. But to me – it is definitely worth the time and effort to get there…even with NY traffic!!
NYC has some of the best stylists ever. You’re so lucky you live in proximity and have found a good one.
It’s fabulous. Typically, I suit long hair. I’m growing out my highlights, which is taking forever so I might shorted it at some point since, otherwise, uniform colour is about 5 years away!
Thanks, I hope I can get it back to some good shape. Several bad haircuts in a row have really messed it up. Growing out always feels torturous.
Oh, Jennifer! I can sure identify with your hair struggles over the years. My mother, a Shirley Temple lover, subjected me to the same awful Toni perms when I was in grade school. Believe me, my perms looked nothing like Shirley Temple’s hair and I still groan when I look at old photos of myself. Fast forward to now: I have been with the same stylist for over 15 years and have tried more hairstyles, colors and products than you can know. Most times I have been pleased, but I can never seem to replicate the way she styles my hair. I do like your current style and wore a similar style myself for several years. Now I wear my hair just about shoulder length with interior layers and a darker base color to boost texture and volume. Dry spray powder, dry shampoos and root boosters have been my best bets.
I’m a huge fan of dry spray too Kathy. I do need some deeper base in my hair but it will take time to get the color back in shape.
Your hair looks great! I have a similar cut and find it hard to describe. I donāt personally like my stylist very much and she is expensive but she gives a great cut. Of course I choose the great cut over great personality! Hair IS important.
I’d choose cut over personality every day!
You look beautiful. The haircut and style are perfect for you. We’re lucky when we can find the right style and stylist. Happy holidays.
Happy Holidays to you too Libby
I dont blame you, your hair looks great! What color lip stick do you have on in the pic? I love it.
I am wearing Lip Fixation in “Fascination”. It’s one of my very favorites. The link is here https://shopstyle.it/l/WTGm
Good, timely information, Jennifer. Thanks so much!
I too have very fine, straight hair. My haircut is very similar to yours.
I have this same problem!!! My Mom always told me that I couldn’t wear long hair (even chin length) because it was fine and limp. My hair has always been short and looked good. Then I lost nearly 100 pounds 5 years ago and discovered my face shape wasn’t round … and at 60 (earlier this year) I decided to grow it out. With volumizing products it works! I’m loving doing something new. And I found a new stylist who “gets” my hair!
Congratulations Lezlie, that’s wonderful! Our face shape makes a big difference for our hairstyle.
It’s all about the haircut–if you don’t have the right haircut, nothing works. It is so stressful to have to try to find a new hairdresser. I can understand the drive back to your old one. My husband learned a long time ago that if my hair is not right nothing is right. Good luck.
Lol. Your husband is a wise man Sarah.
I have a different problem with my hair. I have very thick hair. I keep it short because it has no body at all! And I hate hair spray and only use it when going out to dinner or the theatre. I only use styling products in the winter since I live in Florida and keeping a “style” here in the summer is next to impossible! My hair looks great in my house but once I step out the door, my hair just flops. Using Styling gel in the summer just makes my hair gummy. I did find a really great stylist when we moved here, but it took 6 months before she got my hair the way I like it. The style is short and layered. I get it trimmed every 5 weeks. I would like to keep it a little bit longer, but I cannot deal with the hot weather and longer hair. I think your hairstyle looks great on you! It is very becoming. and I love the color!
Humidity is tough on most hair textures. It would make mine look like a skull cap. Iām glad you found the perfect cut Linda Thatās more than half the battle.
It’s really cute on you Jennifer…..I’m trying to let my hair grow out from being short for over 20 years. I just want a change as I age, my face is slender and my neck is long. I have a lot of body so therefore I can go a bit curly……which I love to finally show off my curls. I would drive a far distance if I had the right stylists who I loved and made me look beautiful!
A stylist that can do that is priceless Holly. It sounds like a nice pretty change for you.
I have had the best stylist for my thick unruly hair for about 2 years when she decided to move about 6 hours away to NOLA ! So I am lucky so far she comes back here once a month to check in at her salon here. Before her my hair was always am embarasing challenge!
Thatās what my stylist is doing!! She left the state after I moved but comes back every 6 weeks so Iām driving to see her.
A good haircut is so worth the drive and yours looks very good.
I agree! Iād drive a long way to see here. After all itās not every week
Hereās a thought: Immediately after having your old stylist do your hair, visit a local stylist and say, āThis is what I want.ā Let the stylist play with your hair, check out the layers, see how your hair falls. Then *maybe* youāll get a decent cut. But maybe just stick with your original stylist. I love your hair style. Itās flattering and breezy.
Thatās a great idea Susan but Iām so happy to have my old one back, Iām afraid to go elsewhere now. Maybe I can work my nerve up later
I agree that finding the right stylist makes all the difference!! I have very curly hair and I finally found a stylist who knows how to cut and style my hair in a way that is just right for me. She also knows how to straighten it for those times I don’t want to wear it curly. She is a gem!! And, I would drive hours to keep her!!
By the way, love your hair style!
Youāre so lucky to have found her Beth! Thank you
I travel an hour to my old stylist. I tried 2 stylists when I moved and they didn’t get it! I would call your style a stacked Bob. I like it!
Iām so glad Iām not the only one traveling to see her stylist.
Hair cut, stylist is sooooo important. Most seem to want the clients hair SHORT. No. I too have a squarish full face, and short is wrong! I need a longish bob, with layering on top. I get compliments with longer hair(shaped) and when I do it myself…..why?
Probably because you know how it looks best and know how to style it. We have to listen to our instincts.
