How To Style A Sheer Blouse and Jeans

I hope you’re enjoying your long weekend. Today I’m showing how to style a sheer blouse and slim jeans that caught my eye. Are women over 50 too old to wear sheer garments? Heck no! Your success with it is all in the styling and that usually involves underpinnings.closeup of sheer feather pattern blouse

Gone are the days I want my lingerie to show through my garments so I have an arsenal of cami’s and slips at the ready. My slips aren’t getting much use these days but I do have an entire section of my lingerie drawer devoted to camisoles (yes, I’m due to weed through those too).

So while I am armed and ready with a collection of camisoles, I hate to have to wear one. A camisole that duplicates the neckline of your top is the least intrusive. Nude or black is the most useful so your blouse gets the attention, not your lingerie.

Here’s more of my philosophy on underpinnings –Ā  The One Bra Youā€™ll Never Need

How to wear a sheer top

  • wear a camisole that matches your skin tone
  • match the neckline of your camisole to the neckline of your top
  • wear a top with sheer sleeves
  • layer a sheer top under a sleeveless dress

I came across this sheer feather print blouse and knew it was a look I would like. The blue is so pretty and the feather pattern adds to its light, airy feel. I’ve always loved blue and the further I dip my toe into wearing color, the more I realize I could wear blue everything and be a happy gal! As a bonus, this top has a built-in cami which makes it easy to wear and maintain your modestly.

It’s a nice length but I wanted to experiment with it so did a half tuck in the front and find I like it both ways. It’s sized from 00 to 18, I’m wearing an 8. The fabric is subtly shirred around the neckline which gives it a feminine but not girly feel. The sleeves have elastic at the wrist so you could easily push them up to keep them out of the way when eating, etc.

These cotton/polyester jeans have plenty of spandex so they’re super comfy. This medium wash comes in petite, regular, short, and tall in both classic or curvy. I’m in that group of women whose height puts them in the petite category but they need a regular rise. Petite pants are shorter everywhere including the rise. This “short” category has a regular rise and a shorter inseam. Brilliant!

  1. Love the styling of this outfit!
Adding the top to my wish list!

Jennifer, this top paired with the color wash on the jeans is STUNNING on you!!! Your hard earned weight loss sure looks great…..especially as you are displaying without hiding in this photo shoot. Needless to say, thanks to you, this sheer blouse is in my cart as I’m writing this šŸ™‚ (from your link of course). I noticed in the past that WHBM trends towards younger women (uh hemm, I’m same age as you) but since your Dressing Diaries last week, I’ve decided to take another look and am impressed the clothing is trending towards ageless. What I’m not sure of is those generic WHBM sizing charts and since we don’t have the blouse here locally in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, I’m needing to rely on those measurements. If you are wearing a size 8, I’m attempting to gauge the size from the photo alone. I’m same height as you, 145 lbs, broad shoulders, curvy build, but have a bra size of 34H with those cups bringing me up to 39-40′. šŸ™ Can you please recommend a size? Their customer service wasn’t helpful with the garment measurements. I truly wish to have the blouse in my wardrobe as the colors are softly flattering and fit well into the S. Florida lifestyle.

  3. As for me, I am a tucked in girl most of the time. I am short and short waisted, and if there is no visible waist, or at least a hint of a waist, I look rather stout and boxy. This is a timely post for meā€“ I recently ordered a patterned top and, much to my surprise, when it arrived I found it was rather sheer (very finely woven). I put it aside to think about for spring, but a black tank is the answer. Thanks.

  4. I have been wearing sheer over tank tops for years. In hot southern California, it just makes sense. I stopped going out in public with just a tank a few years ago (even though my arms are still good) because I felt underdressed for a grandmother. I do wear sleeveless blouses uncovered, just not tanks.

  5. This look is terrific both ways on you. A plus that the camisole is included. I’ve never been able to figure out the half tuck. Perhaps it is because I am short waisted. How do you get the sides to look neat and tidy and not all bunch up either inside or outside of your pants?

    1. I, for one, will be happy to see that half-tucked trend fade away. My mother’s voice in my head says “sloppy.” She is very judgmental, that mother in my head. lol

      1. Those voices in our head are very judgmental. I wish mine werenā€™t

    2. I just tuck the center front 1/3 I and fold the sides so they cascade down.

  6. Wow! You rock that outfit with the French tuck! Jennifer, you look great!

  7. Elaine @ Following Augustine says:

Lovely! I also have a large selection of camis in a variety of colours to wear under sheer tops or add an extra layer of warmth during our cold winter season.

  8. You look absolutely adorable in that outfit, Jennifer!

  9. Love that outfit on you, such a pretty blouse. I do like sheer blouses but realize I could use a new one. Like wearing them with jeans. Kind of the new thing now.

  10. Hello Jennifer,
I like your outfit. I have always had the mindset that jeans no matter what color or cut are for very casual occasions. For me, this way of thinking prevented me from wearing them even to do local errands and shopping. Now however thanks to learning from you and other fashion reviews I am discovering their versatility and acceptable for many occasions. Until this post however I would never have considered pairing a sheer blouse would go with them. I am so glad for this information because I love blouses and have many light linen and silky sheer blouses that I hardly get a chance to wear. I can hardly wait to do some experimenting. Thank you for this great post.

    1. Have fun with them, Elaine! Thereā€™s no point in letting our nice things hang unworn in the closet.

  11. Beautiful outfit on you. So glad to see you are adding color to your outfits! The blue in the top looks lovely with your hair color. hope you have a wonderful week. Look forward to your next video Jennifer

  12. I like my sheer express, portafino blouses but to be honest, I usually wear them with a jacket. Iā€™m not crazy about my arms so a cami wonā€™t help there. So, I guess I canā€™t say I like sheer blouses that much. This design probably hides a lot though and being black would help too. My sheer are in the white to cream range. I think I might try this.

  13. I always hesitate to buy any blouse I cannot try on in person but there is no way to do that with this blouse. The reason I hesitate is that the “arms eye” is often too tight and it also often pulls across the front due to square shoulders. This blouse looks good on you and you say you have square shoulders…..how is the arms eye for fit?

  14. Tucked in makes your legs look longer, untucked would look better if it was button up or had an interesting hemline. Undergarments are a tough one and I take a slightly different road. If my trouser or jeans are dark I would usually wear a dark cami and bra, it gives a slim pillar to hang the sheer top on, same thing goes for light bottoms, white or beige whichever blends with the bottom. If your really brave try a bold pattern cami under a contrasting sheer, stripe under flowers looks amazing as you move.

  15. Oh I love your outfit today!!!!!!

  16. I enjoy your posts and your nod to classic chic styles. I like prints, especially simple tropical patterns and it helps camouflage certain areas. I typically wear a light blouse such as this with a feminine shoe and donā€™t care for it paired with boots.

  17. Wonderful look on you! It motivates me to try something similar.

  18. I love the blouse untucked. It gives you more balance. Tucked in, the blouse kind of cuts you in half. I wear sheer blouses all the time in the summer. I have a couple of lightweight scoop-neck tanks, as well as a few camis, to keep it modest. It’s a nice, breezy way to look stylish but stay cool in warm weather.

    Hi Jennifer,
I love the blouse on you, look really put together. You know how to style yourself, looking so young and cool.

  20. Hello Jennifer~
That blouse is beautiful! I read your blog first thing upon waking as you give me the incentive and encouragement to stay with healthy eating. I love your hair style, look forward to the video.
    Thank you!

  21. Part of the youthful look of this outfit is your minimal use of accessories. Sometimes I will add an additional accessory, only to quickly remove it. The blouse is the star and needs no further help. The cut and colors of this blouse are just so flattering. I feel that many of us could style this too. I love the slim jeans that add that contrast from elegant to casual.
This looks like a style you are wearing with confidence! A built in camisole is a huge benefit. This top may slip into my shopping cart today.
Thank you for another fun, informative blog!

    1. I agree, simple accessories work best with this top. Busy earrings or necklace would certainly be too much.

  22. Love that untucked on you!

  23. This is a great outfit. I love the color and style. I have several sheer blouses that I really like. Where do you find you camis? I have several but they are not comfortable and are somewhat tight. Iā€™d like to find some that are looser and not so restrictive. Also, I really like your hair style lately. I may have to copy!!
    Happy Monday

  24. This is a great outfit. I love the color and style. I have quite a few sheer blouses that I style the same way. Where do you buy your camis? I have several but some are too tight and are uncomfortable under the blouse. Iā€™ve yet to find one I really like, so have to wear what I have! Also, I like the way youā€™ve been styling your hair. I may have to copy! Happy Monday

    1. I have many from Ann Taylor because they used to make them in every color of the rainbow. Some are from Nordstrom too. I just keep my eye out and if I spot a pretty color I pick it up.

  25. dang! i missed that blouse on the Chicos site, im going back and putting it on the wish list!
its really pretty on you, and i love how you styled it with the black bag and boots.
i have the usual camis of white, ecru, black…but i have a whole section of tanks to wear under sheers and button downs to leave open and cardis…chicos travelers are my favorites, but i have quite a few micro tanks in different colors for just this purpose. for this one i think it would be fun to find just the right blue shade to wear under it.

  26. Beautiful on you! Your hair has been looking great too – a little lighter? Maybe you could post your styling tips šŸ™‚

    1. Yes, it is lighter but I do need some length cut off because it’s getting thin at the ends. I will try to make a styling video soon

  27. I really like the look of a sheer blouse, and this one is really pretty. I have a number of them and wear them open over a light top in the summer or over a nude cami and love with a plain midi skirt or straight leg jeans. This one on you would look gorgeous with white jeans and silve hoops.

  28. First of all ā™„ļø HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY ā™„ļø to you Jennifer. Super tips BTW!
As to sheer tops; I love them and they are often the ones I have the most difficulty parting with when editing my closet. Like yourself, they must have a bodice under lay or often if a button closure , I use them as an overlay in lieu of a sweater in an air conditioned environment during the warmer months. In fact for Xmas purchased my dtr. one (from Banana Republic) to wear with her blue jeans and surprisingly she is wearing and loving it. (She is a SF police officer and was lamenting how tired she was of a uniform so Santa decided to give her something girly as there are days she can wear civies but they don’t overdress.). -Brenda-

    1. Happy Valentines Day, Brenda. Great idea for her. It would get boring to have to wear a uniform every day.

  29. This is one of my favourite outfits on you Jennifer! I probably would not have looked twice at this on the hanger, but it looks fabulous on.

    1. I agree, it doesn’t look that interesting on the hanger:)

  30. Paulette Levy says:

Like you Iā€™ve been weeding through my camisoles and other undies. Todayā€™s feather blouse is beautiful and more beautiful on you! I love it best as you tuck it in. It makes you appear taller I think! Either way you look great!

    1. Thanks, Paulette. I do like to do what I can to help me look taller
