J.Crew Try-On: Finding Balance With Wider Pants

This week’s J.Crew try-on felt a bit like a style class—if style class came with bad lighting, smudged mirrors, and the occasional existential sigh. I use these sessions to show how proportion, color, and small design details work together in real life. The dressing room may be far from ideal, but the clothes are always worth a closer look.

For this visit, I focused on balance—how shorter tops and softer fabrics complement wider pants, and why a little sleeve drama can be just the right finishing touch. You can see my other dressing room try-ons here.

RIBBED BOATNECK SWEATER size S

This ribbed sweater comes in several beautiful shades, including this Heather River blue, which is a soft, cool tone that feels fresh and flattering without being too bold. It’s also available in Heather Grey and Black, all versatile neutrals you could wear year-round.

The ribbed texture gives the sweater gentle structure so it skims rather than clings, and the subtle boat neckline adds a timeless, feminine touch. It’s especially flattering if you have narrower shoulders or a pear-shaped frame, since it adds balance for wider hips or fuller thighs. I have broad shoulders, so it’s not a flattering proportion for me.

The sleeves follow the current longer, slightly flared trend, but even with my long arms, they’re miles too long. If they overwhelm me, they’ll definitely swallow anyone with shorter proportions. I’d have to cuff them to make them manageable—which rather defeats the design.

MILANO STITCHED CINCHED WAIST CARDIGAN size M / SLIM WIDE PANT IN CORDUROY size 29

This little cinched-waist cardigan has such a modern, flattering shape. The waistline pulls in just enough to create definition, which makes all the difference when you’re wearing fuller pants. When there’s volume below the waist, a bit of structure on top, or a shorter top keeps the outfit balanced. It comes in 4 great neutrals. The sleeves are long and gently belled, but not overly long and quite wearable. The long row of buttons draws the eye up and down, elongating the look.

I paired it with these Slim-Wide Corduroy Pants in classic length size 29, which are fitted through the hips and thighs, then ease out below the knee. They come 7 colors in classic, petite and tall and are intended to hit just above the ankle.

CABLE-KNIT CREWNECK SWEATER size S / HIGH RISE SLIM WiDE-LEG JEAN size 30

With cables on my mind lately, I couldn’t resist this cotton crewneck sweater in the most vivid mulberry shade. It’s one of those colors that instantly wakes up your wardrobe. It’s rich, saturated, and cheerful without being loud. The cotton gives it a nice, medium weight, so the texture adds interest without bulk. It also comes in 3 other colors…but honestly, this mulberry is amazing.

The sweater hits right at mid-hip, which makes it a good match for wider jeans. It’s long enough to give coverage but short enough to keep your proportions visible…a small but important detail when you’re wearing fuller pants.

I paired it with these black slim-wide jeans, which are not quite as fitted through the thigh as they should be because this is one size too large for me.

Style tip: High-waist bottoms are always a smart choice with shorter tops, and when your pants are wider, a mid-hip or slightly shorter top helps define your shape and keeps the look from feeling bottom-heavy.

PERFECT CASHMERE CARDIGAN size M / CAROLINA PANT size 8 petite / DROP EARRINGS

The Perfect Cashmere Cardigan really lives up to its name. The cashmere is soft and refined, and the closely spaced buttons let you wear it closed like a polished pullover. It’s simple, timeless, and adds just the right note of sophistication without feeling fussy. It comes in 9 great colors.

I paired it with the Carolina Pant, a wool-blend trouser that’s fitted through the hip and widens through the thigh and leg. The flannel fabric has a bit of stretch and a soft drape, so the wider cut flows gracefully instead of sticking out. These come in 4 colors and I think they need to be part of my fall wardrobe.

Style tip: The wider the leg, the softer the fabric should be—it’s what gives the pants movement and keeps the silhouette flattering.

DOUBLE BREASTED KNIT WOOL JACKET size M / CAROLINA PANT size 8 petite

This Double-Breasted Knit Wool Jacket feels as comfortable as a cardigan but looks far more polished. The soft knit has a bit of stretch, so it moves easily, while the double-breasted front gives it a tailored, refined shape. With its slightly shrunken 21-inch length, it’s especially friendly for petites or anyone who finds most jackets overwhelm their frame. It has a sophisticated vibe in a casual style.

It also comes in a beautiful navy, which would pair effortlessly with denim or camel trousers and is a great alternative if you’re looking for a softer take on black.

BRUSHED CASHMERE RUGBY SWEATER size S / NIPPED STRAIGHT FAUX LEATHER PANTS size 29

This Brushed Cashmere Rugby Sweater is one of those pieces you have to feel to understand. The brushing process gives it a fuzzy, almost velvety texture that’s unbelievably soft and cozy without adding bulk. I’m wearing it in lilac, a cool, soft shade that pairs beautifully with black. This very nearly came home with me. It also comes in a stripe.

I styled it with the Nipped Straight Faux Leather Pant in black. J.Crew does faux leather exceptionally well, and I’ve had a few pairs for years! The fabric is soft, supple, and comfortable, with just enough structure to feel elevated.

I love the way the fuzzy texture and soft color contrast with the sleek faux leather, giving the outfit a quiet sophistication.

After trying on all these wider pants, I’m reminded that balance really is everything—whether it’s in the cut of a jacket or how long you can tolerate dressing-room lighting. Some outfits teach you about proportion; others just test your patience. Either way, it’s all part of the fun.

Do you ever find yourself learning the same style lessons again… just with better pants?

I hope you bought the cashmere rugby shirt! It looks so good on you!

  2. Almost forgot. I had a thought about the cinched waist cardigan. The sleeves have very wide ribbing at end of sleeve. I have a jcrew sweater with that same ribbing with a sleeve thats kinda wide. I folded that ribbing and made a cuff. Liked it better and actually thought it looked better…at least on me. Might be an option for that cardigan and look intentional.

  3. I’m in the “get the lilac sweater” camp! 😁
You’re so right about wide legs and fluidity. I’ve found I can do a shorter top with high waist slimmer, straight leg but for a wider leg, I really like that Eileen fisher look with a bit longer, slightly oversized top. Not tunic, just not waist length. I think EF epitomizes that fluid wide leg look But that’s just me.
These try ones really help! Seeing current styles on you with fit and style information is pretty darn invaluable!! ❤️

  4. This shorter top, high-waisted wide-leg pants combination works wonders on my long-torso pear shape. Count me in!

  5. Jennifer,

Go back and get the sweater. You will not regret it. I bought a J.Crew brushed cashmere sweater at the end of winter last year. It was on sale and even with the sale price was a little bit more than I would normally spend, but I have to tell you I absolutely love it. It is so warm and comfortable. I get compliments on it every single time I wear it. I think you would feel the same way with your lilac sweater.

    1. Another vote…I really love the brushed cashmere

  6. At 5’1” tall I’m a true petite and I love high rise wide leg pants especially the trouser style. The dressy wool pants are gorgeous on you! Are they lined? I wear shorter tops with mine and I like to have them just slightly skim my waist as it has gotten fluffier even though my weight is almost what it was at my wedding 32 years ago. The wider leg jeans and pants are also very comfortable to wear all day.

  7. I’m trying to embrace wider pants and I do know you have to wear a shorter top. Being petite I’ve always had to do that. I’m just not a fan of these kind of pants. I do love all the tops you showed us. Maybe with the exception of the bell sleeves. They are always too long on me. Thanks for the try on.

    Hello Jennifer,
Thank you for the looks. I love those corduroys you mentioned and l am going to take them on my trip to London very soon. I also bought their nipped waist dark wash jeans when they had a 40% promotion and they are winners too. Really like to grab a bargain when l can and l so appreciate petite sizing.

    1. I love their sales too.

  9. Hi Jennifer, Although restraint can be good, go back and get that lilac sweater… it looks gorgeous on you! Jo

    1. LOL!! I’m really tempted to

  10. Elizabeth says:

You should run back to the store and grab that brushed cashmere rugby sweater. That lilac shade is so flattering on you!!! And the style suits you so well!

    1. It’s in my cart ♥️

  11. Hi Jennifer,
The lesson I’m re-learning here is to leave the bell sleeve behind. For me, they got in the way of eating, playing mahjong, playing cards and most anything you use your arms for. The sleeves drags anything in its path.
Just my opinion…but it doesn’t work for me.

I am 5’8″ and wider pants are not a problem for me as they can be quite figure flattering. My 71 year old issue with them, however, is that they do not look good with flats. I rarely need to wear heels these days so I am avoiding purchasing them for now.

    1. I can’t wear heels anymore but wider pants work with flats as well.

  13. Love that lilac rugby sweater on you! You might want to reconsider leaving it behind!

  14. Thanks for going to J Crew! It’s my favorite (for 40 years, hah!). I love wide pants and find them flattering (and modern) on my petite, short waisted frame, but you’re exactly right on proportion. They need to be high waisted, not too wide, a flowy/not stiff fabric and worn with a shorter top. JC has some short button downs that are great. I hate the pants with the little patch pockets on front (who needs extra fabric there?) but I’m obsessed with the trouser jeans if I can find the right size. And no one does color like JC. I’ve been trying to resist that burgundy cable sweater, but I can’t “unsee” it! Foe me, JC just nails modern classic, and it’s the place for older women to look updated and stylish with the right amount of trend. And the price point is reasonable. Maybe one day I will afford Rag and Bone and The Row, but for now J Crew!

    1. I love JCrew too for all the reasons you mention Shari!

  15. Thanks for these tips. No matter how many styles and combos I try, I just can’t fix the right look (for me!) of wide leg pants and shorter top. I feel best in skinnier pants covered by a longer top. (Sigh.) So much for looking “with it.”

    1. That’s a great look on many women and you can still look modern.

  16. Enjoyed your post of try ons with J Crew. Yes, I am learning which tops work best with the wide pants. As a petite I am careful not to wear the wider pants as they over whelm me

  17. The two sweaters that I hope you buy are the mulberry and cobalt blue ones. Those sweaters look beautiful on you! Also, I love the black flannel Carolina pant – so classy and versatile. If I didn’t have a closet full of black pants, I would buy this one right away.

    1. They are great and come in three other colors including navy.
