J.Crew Factory Summer Try-On for Women Over 60: Dresses, Pants, and Layers Worth Trying
Dressing for summer in your 60s can feel like a balancing act…you want comfort and ease, but you also want to feel pulled together. I popped into J.Crew Factory last week for a small summer try-on and was pleasantly surprised by the number of wearable, stylish pieces that didn’t break the bank.
A quick note: my face looks oddly distorted in most of these photos (thank you, awkward phone angles). Just pretend we’re in the fitting room together, laughing about it.

J. Crew Factory is a size-inclusive brand that carries classic, petite, and tall lengths with many items in sizes XXS-3X. For size reference, I’m 5’4″, which puts me on the cusp of petite. I have broad shoulders and straight hips. You can see my other recent try-ons here.

I started with this cotton-blend dress in Eucalyptus. The skirt portion is like a woven poplin, and the bodice is knit like a ribbed tee. The fabric has stretch in both portions but more on top. It comes in 3 colors: in classic or petite lengths. I’m wearing the classic, which is 48″ from the shoulder, and the petite is 41 1/4″, which would be better for me.
The bodice is sleeveless, so I topped it with this classic white jean jacket that’s cotton with 1% elastane for a bit of ease. I like that it has silver buttons which blend nicely with the white. It also comes in a mid-wash blue.

I shared this outfit over the weekend, but in case you missed it…I love pink with black, so this outfit is right up my alley. The v-neck sweater tank has a slightly nubby texture in a cotton blend, which I love as an alternative to a tee-shirt fabric. It comes in 5 colors and is the kind of layering piece that adds interest because of the texture.
I’m wearing it with these black flare leg crops…which are almost full-length on me. They’re a cotton blend with 7% elastane, so they feel substantial and have plenty of stretch to maintain their shape. They come in 3 shades. These are the classic length with an inseam of 25.5″, and they also come in petite and tall. I tossed their classic cotton cardigan around my shoulders, which comes in 8 colors.

This linen blend shift dress is such a great base layer for summer. They call it a mini dress, so this classic length is perfect for me. It comes in 4 pretty colors plus a black and white stripe. I can see this dressed down with a cotton cardigan or denim jacket or up with a linen blazer or silk wrap for fancier occasions.

This navy striped crewneck tee is perfect for summer in 100% cotton. It comes in 5 colors and feels silky smooth to the touch. It’s hip length and slightly oversized, so you could easily wear it untucked. I’m wearing it under a one-button white linen/cotton blend blazer. It’s fully lined with welt pockets and working buttons on the cuffs. The tailoring is lovely, and it looks much more expensive than the price tag. This comes in 4 colors in classic and petite lengths. I’m wearing the classic length because petite is not available in the store.
These high-rise chinos are bestsellers, with good reason…the fit is fabulous, and the stretch cotton feels great. They come in 7 colors and several prints, in classic and petite lengths with back welt pockets and slant, trouser-style pockets in front. I wish these navy ones had come home with me.

This striped tee is a beautiful periwinkle and ivory color with gold-toned buttons across one shoulder. It’s hard to believe this tee is only $19.50 because the 100% cotton feels substantial and soft, and the lack of a contrasting neckband, like the stripe I showed earlier, elevates the look…plus the stripes line up! It comes in 4 color options and seems to run true to size.
I have it tucked into these wide-leg crops, which are ankle length on me, but they are available online in petite and tall lengths. These fit really nicely and are a great wash for summer. They come in 4 washes and a blue and white stripe that looks so fresh for summer!
Other J.Crew Factory Summer finds I wish I’d seen:

These white drapey denim trousers look elevated and refined in either this white or a light denim blue wash. I love that they have a polished vibe, no distressing, and a finished hem.

I’d like this navy eyelet beach dress over a navy tank and narrow-leg white pants…you could also substitute leggings if that’s your vibe.

I’m not a pattern person (yet), but many of you are, and there’s no mistaking how fun these high-rise pants would be on a sunny day…or a warm weather vacation. I’d add white tennies and a bright top to pick up one of the colors in the pants. They also come in solid colors and have fabulous reviews. There is a coordinating shirt in the same print for the expressive ladies among us.

This sweatshirt with the rowing oar flag motif would be fun for coastal or festive occasions this summer! I love the ecru background, and the terry is reported to be very soft.

This 100% cotton striped dress is right up my alley and probably would have come home with me. I’d add a woven belt, raffia earrings, and this rattan bag to tie in with the belt, and perhaps a white denim jacket.
Have you checked out J.Crew Factory lately? I’m curious…would you be adventurous and wear the print pants and shirt together? I’d wear this scarf.
Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

I am pretty print-forward but even I wouldn’t wear the pants with the matching shirt! I am considering the pants though. They’re reasonably priced.
I just bought the ribbed knit maxi dress in black last Saturday! I’m hoping it will be a good base piece with lots of versatility. I’m thinking it would work with a jeans jacket, poplin or gauze shirts tied at the waist, scarf around shoulders, belted with necklace, etc. I only had a few minutes in the store, but I’m ready to make another trip to J Crew Factory when I can! Our town has literally no shopping – the only place to get clothes is the grocery store (Smiths, kind of like Walmart) or a second-hand shop (I like thrifting but have never found anything there). So, shopping is 45 minutes to 1.5 hours away. With my pear-shaped self, I haven’t had a lot of luck with online shopping unless I already know the brand well.
All of your outfits looked great except the dress would have been better in petite on you. You are three inches taller than I am so that dress looks to run long. Easy enough to shorten it. I think the patterned pants outfit reminds me of clothes from the early seventies when I was in college. No I would not wear printed pants. I’m a solid color woman.
Love the periwinkle stripe top with those wide leg crop jeans. Looks so comfy and summery. These are all styles I would wear and feel great in, as I consider myself a
Sporty to classic type. But on occasion I see someone in a boho look like appliqués on jeans or a fringed top, or even a romantic frilly blouse etc., and I admire the look she’s created. So, my question is, should a gal just stay in her lane and be a certain “type of dresser,” playing it safe and predictable? I don’t want to look silly or turn heads for the wrong reasons, but it seems fun to get creative once in awhile. Maybe you could do a post about adding “flavor” without going overboard. Just a thought. Hope you keep feeling better.
That’s a great idea for a post. I get those feelings when I see other women’s style too. I think adapting touches of other styles is fun.
No print pants for me. Last time I wore print jeans I was in my early twenties. I did purchase the linen wrap skirt and a black vest. What color T-shirt should I wear with it?
It depends what color skirt you bought but you could do a fun pop of color, of go tonal
Oh my goodness, can’t believe I left out the colors! I bought a black vest and sand (think that’s what it is called) skirt. I chose the black vest cause I like to wear dark colors on top and think I can use it with my jeans as well.
Those are great neutrals and would pair with any other color so I’d just choose what you love for the top.
Great outfits! I think the print pants are cute but I wouldn’t wear them. They would be fun though. I think I’m just too much of a classic dresser.
No, I am not courageous enough to wear the same top and pant in print. It seems like the trend will go out of style fast also.
Sets are having a big moment right now. I’m curious to try them.
I enjoy spending time at J Crew Factory when we are in an area with outlet malls and trying all sorts of stuff on that I might never otherwise consider. Last year I realized their short-sleeved cotton T shirts are superior to many other because they have a seam in the back which shapes them very nicely.
How do the Dolce Vita sandals fit? So stylish—do they have foot support?
They seem to run a tiny bit large and feel supportive. I can wear them all day in comfort.
Thank you!
For the budget conscious Walmart carries the stripped midi dress
There are lots of great options for striped dresses this season
