Knitwear Trends To Try This Fall

Happy Thursday ladies. Knits are trending this fall… which is sort of like saying that bathing suits trend in the summer:) This fall we’re seeing some old-is-new-again shapes and lots of comfy options. Everyone is ready to get back to wearing real clothes but we want to be comfy and that’s where knits come in. The knitwear trends for fall 2021 are sweater vests, cropped sweaters, oversized sweaters, lots of cables, and polo sweaters.

Today I’m joining the gals from our Over 50 Style Team to share our thoughts on knitwear this fall.

Oversized

Oversized sweaters are super popular for fall and I’m loving them. I’ve had my eye on this one for weeks…waiting for a sale and trying to decide where I could wear it. Many are ribbed, cabled, and in classic shapes on steroids. The more oversized the sweater, the thinner I like the fabric. The queen of oversized sweaters is Eileen Fisher and she has some beauties this season. This sweater hit my shopping cart today because the Tencel/organic cotton blend is perfect for my climate and it’s a rich fall color.

Cropped Sweaters

Cropped sweaters are perfect for petite women. They’re at, just below or above the waist. I like mine worn over a longer shirt with the shirt showing below.

It’s a great way to break up your proportions and give a nod to your waist without tucking in or belting anything.

Polo Sweater

These work well for women who prefer a little structure in their knitwear. They’re available with or without buttons down the front placket. This polo cardigan has buttons all the way down the front. I like the way the collars frame your face and would even layer them over a collared shirt. Many of these are short and boxy, which is another popular knitwear trend for fall.

SWEATER VESTS

SWEATER VEST

I started spotting these early last summer. They come with or without buttons, as long as tunics, cropped to the waist, cabled, v-neck, cowl, and turtleneck. These are not the patterned sweater vests our fathers used to wear, although that look is available too. Many have a preppy, collegiate vibe, but there are more elegant options available too. This vest combines the polo, half zip, and sweater vest into one, and it’s very wearable.

  1. I bought some target sweaters too. Really like the cropped look because I’m short. I’m not a fan of the sweater vests. Love sweater weather.

Where can I locate the pink polo sweater–love the color!

    1. The link keeps breaking but I found it on J Crew

  3. I like the polo sweater, I havenā€™t seen that before.

  4. Hard pass on the sweater vests for me. Really don’t like them. Maybe a childhood thing? Target has upped it’s game. I bought a chunky cardigan earlier and the quality is very good and the color was pretty too. It is a modern cut – cropped, full sleeve. over-sized. It will look dated in a season or two but it’s a good value. I really like the borrowed from the guys fit. It’s sexy!

    1. I am loving my Target sweaters. The quality and styling are awesome.

  5. Just for fun, I should try on a cropped sweater with low-rise pants. Neither of these work for my long torso, but the result of the two of them together would be hilarious. I could use that to remind myself not to take things too seriously.

  6. I have several simi bulky sweaters. I like cardigans but leave them in the drawer.
I do love that pumpkin colored long one. Guess I will have to give it a try.
Thanks for the fall sweater fashion show.

  7. For some reason I never wear cardigans. I buy them and they sit in a drawer. Iā€™ll always opt for a jacket instead. I do like a cozy sweater on a cold day. I was out yesterday but so many are earth colours. I would prefer a nice red or blue. The hunt continues!

    1. I will keep an eye out for blue or red for you Joanna

  8. Tania Denise Stephens says:

I love the orange color of the eyelash sweater, it is perfect for fall. I haven’t bought a sweater vest yet, I just can’t find one that I like.

  9. Can you please tell me what size Eileen Fisher sweater you bought?
Thank you for all your suggestions.

    1. I buy Eileen sweaters in small.

  10. Boy, they go fast in my size. I wonder if they will restock. Good price on v pullover. I like the prep look so I can see that with a shirt underneath. Did you know you looked so good in orange?

    1. I did not know. Trying all these new colors is eye opening

  11. Deborah Boland says:

Hi Jennifer! I see we are twinning in the same color! I love your fuzzy eyelash sweater in that soft rusty orange. They are calling that shade “clay”. It’s so fresh and fall-like! Hop on over to my blog to take a look at my sweater and let me know what you think. Cheers! Deb

  12. As live in Canada, I’m a big fan of sweaters and have a selection for each season ranging from cotton knits, woolens and mixed blends. For our Autumn (with temps now ranging in the 50’s to low 70’s F); choice is over sized, heavy weight cottons or lightweight wool with one favourite being a cast off of my son’s when he was in his late teens that is still in mint condition. (A chunky ribbed crew neck khaki green pullover with cognac leather patch elbows which I often wear with my jeans in lieu of a jacket and pair with cognac boots.) As to style, find that cropped sweaters can prove to be very versatile as go with either casual or dress bottoms plus one doesn’t have the hassle of under-tucking and/or a tuck-in particularly after a trip to the washroom … lol! Also wear sweater vests on occasion when temperatures drop as provide an extra layer without excessive bulk. -Brenda-
P.S.: Do love the scale of the cross body bag you featured.

    1. Your son’s sweater sounds so fabulous! Good score for you.

  13. Iā€™ve embraced the cropped sweaters this season. Being 4ā€™11ā€+ they flatter my petite frame. Iā€™m on the lookout for a sweater vest as we speak. Love that fuzzy cardigan too. Hello Fall!

    1. I love the cropped sweater look for my silhouette too.

  14. SUSAN BLAKEY says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that fuzzy cardigan! It looks so cozy. This has been a really good knitwear season, hasn’t it? I’m a fan of those polo style sweaters too.

  15. Janet Williams says:

I love my sweaters and have bought several this fall. I am gravitating towards pink and burgundy and a new leopard print. I noticed a teal on you which is a good colour for me too.

    1. Pink and burgundy are such a pretty combination.

    2. Teal is one of my favorite colors!
