Monday Musings- Medicinal Mushrooms & Musings on Style
Happy Monday, and a very Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian readers. This week I have some musings on why I’ve added mushroom powder to my diet and musings on style.
We’re continuing to make our way through a second watching of the crown, and I’m seeing things I missed the first time. Last night we watched the episode when President Kennedy and Jackie visited Buckingham Palace.
I hadn’t remembered that Queen Elizabeth and Jackie were the same age because the Queen appeared so much older. Her style was less glamorous than Jackie’s, but there was also a difference in culture. They both wore classic fashion, but Jackie’s was more minimalistic, and Queen Elizabeth’s was very traditional.
Mushrooms
We also watched Fantastic Fungi on Netflix and loved it! I knew mushrooms had medicinal qualities and have been taking them for my immune system for ages. Two weeks ago, I began adding even more pixie dust to my morning smoothies in the form of powered mushrooms.
It makes my shake taste a tiny bit earthy, but there are so many other tasty things in there that I almost don’t notice.
The National Library of Medicine has this to say about mushrooms–
“More than 100 medicinal functions are produced by mushrooms and fungi and the key medicinal uses are antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, antiallergic, immunomodulating, cardiovascular protector, anticholesterolemic, antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antifungal, detoxification, and hepatoprotective effects; they also protect against tumor development and inflammatory processes.”
After watching the show on fungi I found this hot chocolate blend with several kinds of mushrooms and ashwagandha. It’s quite tasty and makes a great treat after dinner. I realize most people would find this strange, but I believe our immune system is of vital importance, so I’m game to try new things.
Outfit of the Week
This sage color has crossed my radar several times in the last few weeks. I often think of it as a shade to wear in warm weather only. Here’s a fall outfit that mixes it with camel.
I love the heavy fringe on this ruana and how its beige ties into the camel. The labradorite in the earrings has flashes of sage and aqua. I nearly bought this bag last week and am still thinking about it.
Do you mix warm shades with cool ones in the same outfit?
I too loved Fantastic Fungi. I just ordered the mushroom powder . Thank you!
Lovely outfit but what really caught my eye was the article on mushrooms! How interesting! My husband and I were just talking about this recently but didnt know where to get reliable information so very timely!
I have the small version of the bag you are looking at and I love it. Have received many compliments on it when I carry it.
Thanks for the info! I read the entire article you quoted from, and there are lots of REAL benefits from mushrooms, but it’s not a one size fits all. Regular button supermarket mushrooms are not as good as wild ones – no vitamin D – and diff mushies have diff benefits. I eat a varied diet of mushrooms, my daughter grows some organically. This is where a supplement might help b/c they are organic and grown in the U.S., despite being unregulated, and rely on different mushrooms.. Beware of the claims, though; the powder I researched (above) promoted brain benefits, which the article clearly did not. What I took away from the article were many other benefits including fighting certain cancers. Also ask your doctor what “immune health” really means. Most docs won’t know much about mushrooms, but they should be able to talk about immune benefits. The problem is, how much should you eat / take supplements to be effective? The Chinese may know, but I doubt we do. (Love Dr Weil, Jennifer.)
That cancer connection stood out for me too.
I think I’ll pass on the chocolate mushrooms.
Love this outfit! It’s definitely my style as I’m 5’8″ and love ruannas. I might get the camel one for my Spring coloring though.
Suddenly colors that didn’t work for me suit me now. Camel is in my color shift. I used to keep it to accessories.
Knowing how to mix cool and warm colors seems to involve the value of each. Camel and black is a classic. Camel and medium blue works. Neutrals are easiest. I like prints that combine cool and warm colors together in a print, then using those colors to choose the rest of the outfit. I call it “leaving it to the experts”.
Is anyone concerned that supplements are not regulated? This is why I do not take any supplements except vitamin D. I just try to eat extremely well. I love mushrooms and am going to make an effort to eat them more often. Thanks for the reminder, Jennifer.
Sage green is a new color for me, but since my hair has gone silvery gray, I have discovered that it looks great! I usually pair it with a soft blue, rose, or red. Black prints seems to work too.
You may find lots of soft sage around these days.
Yes, Iām very concerned that they are not regulated. Lie you, Iām a firm believer that we should get our vitamins and other nutritional needs from food
I think we are stricter in Canada as Natural Health Products including vitamins & supplements are regulated and must be labelled with an identification # issued by Health Canada to that specific manufacturer and product.
Mushroom powder? Who knew….I might try it, there’s always mushrooms at my house, just love them sauted with a bit of oil, fresh parsley, salt & pepper. I use portobello’s as a ‘pizza’ base or heap scrambled eggs..good health is essential….as to the fashion, if only the sweater was available in sage.. I like the entire outfit except the ruana, just not my style……Have a great week….you are part of my morning with coffee
I love portobellos grilled and sliced on top of a salad. I pretend itās protein because theyāre so meaty. Love the idea of a pizza base!
I love portobello cheeseburgers. They are meaty — and do have a lot of protein.
So much learning here! Thank you Jennifer! I must try to find mushroom mix (need gluten-free?) for myself along with magnesium powder ? Had a terrifying AFIB event yesterday and long hours in the emergency room on IVs of this and that. Luckily they resolved it quickly. .
I am I low on magnesium. The other thousand (felt like it) tests and xray of heart showed nothing remarkable. Their term made me laugh (nothing remarkable). At my age Iām still learning! Thank you for your newsy and informative posts! And yes, love camel and often pair itwith green or certain blues. But mainly with black.
Iām so sorry to hear that! My husband has Afib and they have him on a medication to keep his heart rate steady.
Paulette, I have AFIB too. Thatās another reason I am overly cautious about taking supplements. I take 2 medications – one for heart rate and another called a blood thinner. I have read that tumeric is a supplement that might be bad to take with a blood thinner. Who knew?
My husband avoids tumeric because heās on a blood thinner.
Always learning from your posts. So interesting about the mushrooms. I like the outfit and love those colors.
Love the colors of the clothes and accessories. My hair is lighter now and not sure what color clothes to buy . I thought I could wear some of my clothes when my hair was darker, but some don’t look as good on me now. Have you found this out to be true? I find I look kind of washed out with the lighter hair.
I am all for boosting immune system. Be sure to check with your doctor if mushrooms are good for you. I am allergic to mold, so mushrooms are a no.
I
Surprising colors wash me out now too! Things I always looked good in just blend right into my skin.
Thank you for introducing a concept of mushrooms that is new in my world.
Love the outfit and color combinations. I have yet to wear a ruana, since I am petite.
Itās harder for petites, I agree but I love how cozy they are.
Wonderful that you are trying Medicinal mushrooms. I loved that Documentary and it has me filling my cabinet with powdered adaptogens and mushrooms. Have you heard of mushroom coffee by Four Sigmatic. An acquired taste but it gives you a daily dose of Lionās Mane and Chaga. I always add a little creamer and sweetener to my coffee š¤
It such a great show. We plan to watch it again because itās so full of info. I saw mushroom coffee at Whole Foods which sounds like a great option. Since Iām a tea drinker the hot chocolate seemed like a more natural addition to my diet. I add oak milk to it too.
Thank you for the mushroom information. Are you still doing the greens supplement that you wrote about A few weeks ago? If so, how do you use that?
It still hasnāt arrived from Amazon! I just checked and itās coming Thursday. I intend to add it to my morning smoothies. Theyāre so easy to add ingredients too. I will let you know after I try it.
Thank you soooooo much – our daughter has JRA (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis) – diagnosed at 18 mos and even though sheās 43 that is still the classification. Modern meds are miraculous but the possibility of horrendous side effects is alarming. I am sending her this post right now. This is something new to me – certainly worth a try! I love todays outfit too.
I started hearing about the benefits of mushrooms from Dr Andrew Weil many years ago and have always thought heās brilliant!
I just ordered the mushroom hot chocolate mix. Thanks for the suggestion!
Personally, I like the rauna (sp?) better with the grey jeans and blue shirt as shown in the link. If I bought it, thatās how Iād wear it. Just personal preference.
I liked that pairing, also, and was bummed Nordstrom didn’t link to those items!
I love your Monday Musings – they are so interesting. I’m intrigued with the mushrooms as an immune system booster. I am going to check with my pharmacist to see if there are any interactions with the medicine I take. And thank you for the link to amazon.ca – the hot chocolate mix looks interesting.
I hosted Thanksgiving dinner for the first time in 3 years yesterday, and to say I’m exhausted today is an understatement! But it was worth it – I love getting out the good china and cooking a feast and catching up with everyone in person.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Iām happy the link to .ca worked! Itās almost impossible to try from my end. Let me know what you hear about the mushrooms. Iām planning to simply eat more common varieties too.
