Monday Musings- Shoes, Eggs, and Travel Outfit

Happy Monday, ladies. This week’s musings are more random than ever, which I think is a sign of either genius or stress 🙂 I’m guessing the latter.

What’s Your Fav?

I’ve been logging more miles on the treadmill lately, and as a result, my feet aren’t happy campers. Yesterday, I had to give them a break and just do some yoga at home. I’ve ordered a few different pairs of casual sneakers and these M. Gemi driving loafers that Elizabeth recommended last week. They were already in my cart, so her recommendation sealed the deal…fingers are crossed they fit.

PASTOSO DRIVING LOAFER

I love my Munro loafers and ballet flats,  but I know our feet are all so unique they won’t work for everyone. I wondered what your favorites are. Do you have an especially comfortable brand of loafer or ballet flats to recommend? I’d love to do a round-up for you as a resource. BTW, my new AGLs showed up and don’t fit, so back they go. I checked the size against my old pair, and it’s the same, but I’ve obviously stretched the heck out of them as my feet have gotten wider with age. Sheesh.

Checked bags

I’ve only checked a suitcase once in 20+ years, and that last time it went badly. After I got to my gate, they canceled my flight, and it took me days to get my bag back. Luckily I was going home, but still! It confirmed I was better off just going carry-on. I will have to break that rule for my trip to Miami next week, and I’m sort of nervous about it. I know people successfully check their bags all the time, but I’ve only had disasters doing it. I’m bringing some outfits to shoot for the blog and just can’t get it all in my carry-on.

I often pack my hats inside my carry-on, but I decided this hat clip looked like a great idea because it will hold several hats simultaneously. I hope it arrives in time for my trip.

Cooking failures

I’ve become a fan of Egg bites lately but am struggling to make them successful. Starbucks does a fab job with theirs, and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong, so I hope to get some ideas from you. I’m using four whole eggs, and the rest are egg whites. I put chopped red pepper, a tiny bit of red onion, and spinach in each cup, then top it with beaten eggs. Maybe, I’m putting too many veggies in mine??

THEY ARE NOT THE MOST APPETIZING LOOKING, BUT I PROMISE THEY TASTE GREAT AND ARE A GREAT QUICK BREAKFAST

My non-stick muffin pan is proving to be a disaster for these things. For my first batch, I sprayed the heck out of the pan, but they stuck, and I lost 1/3 of each one glued into the pan. Then I tried using muffin liners which turned the inside of the pan bright blue, so I worried they’d done the same thing to the eggs. They were also a nightmare to peel off the eggs, so we only ate the center and wasted a ton of the “bite”. These things aren’t large, to begin with, so I want to be able to consume all of them.  I’ve been googling options lately and discovered food-grade silicone liners. Have any of you tried them? Everything I read seems to indicate they’re safe to use. I love crowd-sourcing ideas from you ladies, so any advice is welcome.

Outfit of the week

I have travel and what to wear on my mind this week. This one features the Eileen Fisher crepe pants that I never travel without. I have them in several colors, many over 15 years old. They’re super comfy, never wrinkle, and are machine washable.

SLIM KNIT PANTS / SLIP-ON SNEAKERS / BASKET STITCH SWEATER / OPEN CARDIGAN / SHOULDER BAGNO SHOW SOCKS / HUGGIE EARRINGS / AIRPODS / CARRY-ON SUITCASE

The sneakers look super comfy, and the no-shoe socks will come in handy if you’re not TSA Pre and have to take off your shoes to go through security. Airpods or noise-canceling headphones are mandatory when I fly, and layers for fluctuating airplane temperatures.

Have you got any upcoming trips?

  1. I recently stumbled onto your site & am loving reading your current & past posts. About egg bites, love Starbucks bacon & gruyere but enjoy the new flavor (mushroom & kale) because it’s lower in salt. I make bacon/swiss at home using silicone cupcake liners or bacon/mexican cheddar/green peppers & add salsa when serving. Yours look delicious with lotsa vegetables (I should add more to mine).
I too need new walking shoes… probably need to be more consistent with my walking also 😉

  2. Regarding the egg cups. You said 4 whole eggs and the rest egg white, but not clear what the actual ratio is? I would use just whole eggs and consider pouring the whole egg veggie combo into a Pyrex dish and baking that way. Then cut out slabs of your quiche without a crust. The calorie count for one large egg is only 74 calories.
    All the best Annie

I need a collar shirt to wear under a sweater but also by itself. As a pear shape, if a shirt fits my shoulders, it is often too narrow and won’t close/button all the way down. Do you know if the shirt in your post today is wide enough to fit a pear shape?? Due to some medical issues, it is very hard for me to get out to shop.

    1. I assume the sweater would be spacious, but for a shirt, I would try an A-line shape.

  4. Re: the egg bites. I mix the veggies with the eggs before I put them in the cupcake pans. I bake them at 400 for 20-25 min. After they are cooked, I let them sit for about 5 min in the pan then use a knife around the outside and pop them out and let cool on a rack. Once they are cool, I put them on a cookie sheet and flash freeze the for 1/2 hour and then pack in a plastic bag for the freezer.

    1. Great idea for freezing them! Thanks.

  5. Holly Beaver says:

I use a lot of veggies in my egg bites and use the jumbo muffin tins. After spraying the tins, they come easily. On the shoe front, I have fussy feet and are currently walking in Hokas, which are very comfortable for me.

Our family is scattered literally all over the world so travel is a very common event for us. We just returned from 6 weeks visiting our daughter, son-in-law and 3 grandchildren in Australia over Christmas. We’re planning a 5,000 round trip road trip this summer with a new car to visit our other daughter. Then October takes us to Europe for a big family birthday party. I must admit I am happy to be home for a few months and not go anywhere! I love ballet flats and I like the German brand ARA (Zappos). I have 2 pair of their ballet flats and their loafers as well. They are very comfortable and reasonably priced for a quality comfort shoe.

  7. I got Hoka One Ones (Bondi 8s) because I have a bunion on one foot and pain in the other from a previous break. They are supportive and thickly cushioned. I wore them traveling and they were great. Highly recommend.

  8. Speaking of traveling, have you found a lighted travel makeup mirror with magnification? You have a gift for finding great products!

  9. I’m so happy to have found your blog and this lovely community.
    So genuine, so relatable!
Pls let us know the solution to your egg dilemma…have the same problem!

  10. Traveling monthly for 13 years, I only had 1 bag lost–and only for a few hours. For longer trips, I carry too many liquids for carry-on only. You can track your bag on the American app–other airlines probably have the capability, too, and of course, using your own trackers you add to your bag. I wish more people would check their bag–it’s painful to wait so long for people to put up and take down their bag in overhead bins. IMO, airlines should charge for carry-ons, as they contribute to people missing connections! As for shoes, for walking or lots of standing, I have had great luck with On Cloud (best for real exercise), Ilse Jacobsen, and L’Amour des Pieds, and I have had foot issues in the past. I also get lots of compliments on the latter two.

  11. Jennifer, as a semi retired personal trainer, I’m on my feet a lot, and together with my own workouts, my feet take quite a beating. May I suggest you go to a reputable running shoe store for a professional fitting? The staff is well trained, and will assess your gait, as well as measure your feet accurately, and then recommend appropriate brands/models/sizes. My PCP recommended same to me when she diagnosed osteoarthritis. Wearing the correct shoes (and changing them when they break down, as they will) makes for much happier joints and feet.

Also, please don’t rush headlong into working out. You must pace yourself, or you’ll burn out too quickly and likely just give up.

  12. Love Sheec no-show socks! The shoes (Naturalizer) are cute, but one person commented about them being narrow. Same goes for Nike – too narrow. I love Alegria shoes and Jambu. With arthritis and needing a wide toe box, many shoes don’t work. I usually need to wear orthotics but with Alegria can sometimes wear their insoles. I enjoy the clothes, shoes, etc. you often style; however, they’re about double the cost of what I’m able to spend. I do, however, watch for sales and love thrifting where I find amazing clothes.

  13. And I should have mentioned “lighted” travel mirror…

  14. Speaking of traveling…have you found a good compact magnifying travel mirror? I’m not happy with the one I’ve been using. You always find the best things!

  15. We’re off to Mexico later this week. We’ll be visiting friends who live in the highlands east of Mexico City, so not as hot as the beach resorts, but still a lot warmer than Alberta in February! We’re going to travel carry-on only and I’ll definitely be wearing comfortable layers to travel in.

  16. Laura Rutledge says:

Bon Voyage Jennifer! Here are a few things I do on the rare occasion I have to check a bag: I never put my jewelry in it, or anything irreplaceable, that goes in my carry on tote, and I put a complete outfit in my husbands bag (and vice versa). I also include a toothbrush in my make up bag in my carry on, and all medications. Sometimes an extra top, sweater (wrap), socks or slides, depending on the weather. You’ll have what you need if your bag doesn’t arrive with you (speaking from experience). Note to self: don’t ever buy another purple suitcase, it gets pulled for inspection every time!

  17. I’m in Miami Beach now with my husband of 38 years on vacation! The weather is perfect; about 80 during the day, but breezy and chilly in the evening when the sun sets.
I have plantar fasciitis so I look for shoes with good arch support and it has helped me a lot (I’m almost 60).
    Enjoy your time in FL!

  18. Catherine says:

I make egg bites all the time. I use parchment paper muffin cup to line my pan and they peel off perfectly. I always sautée my veggies, cook the meat if using, if using cheese stir it into the eggs works for better consistency.

I really enjoy hearing all these shoe recommendations! Thanks everyone

  19. Jennifer , check out Once Upon A Chef she has a great recipe for copycat Starbucks egg bites. I personally have not been impressed with silicone for baking ?

    1. Thank you, I’ll check her out. I love the Starbucks ones

  20. I cured my foot pain with Merrel Mocs. I have found them to be more comfortable and supportive than athletic shoes. I wear them around the house, shopping, working in the woodshop with my husband and for walking. I haven’t had foot pain for many years.
I am a former business traveler who traveled 3 weeks out of four. I always placed a copy of my itinerary in my suitcase of top of my stuff so it was clearly visible. It had my contact information and where I was going and where I was staying in case my bag got lost. I did however, try to avoid checking my bag because I hated waiting at the luggage carousel for my bags.

  21. Sue L. Petersen says:

I am interested in articles about narrow shoes. I currently wear Cobb Hill, Ecco’s, New Balance and Asics for walking and Riekers for boots. I have a hard time finding any loafers or ballet flats to work because of my narrow feet. Also interested in an article on how to pack for a long vacation. Going to Alaska this summer for 11 days, part cruise and part land tours. Your article today was very interesting. Thanks.

  22. Luggage woes- use the apple luggage pod. My daughter used it on trip to Italy – fabulous.
Egg bites. I load mine with veggies. Put veggies in first, then egg mixture. I use silicone muffin pans. 400’ for 20 minutes. Sometimes I add shredded cheese in egg mixture and a pepperoni on top before baking. So easy for work mornings!

  23. Cath🇨🇦 says:

Jennifer, I have travelled extensively and never had lost luggage. It may be that I always fly with the one airline for the whole trip… if there’s a connection.
Eg. Vancouver to Toronto to Barbados on Westjet or Air Canada.
Long haul to UK and beyond is the same … British Airways has been super reliable in that respect ( plus I collect and use Avios points ) . My luggage is also easily recognized… colourful maps on sides from Heys Canada.

Try a silicone muffin pan for your breakfast treats…should pop out easily with little clean up. I agree that you might need to cut back on mushrooms ( you could pre- sear them) due to high water content, and spinach too.

Due to my ‘unfriendly feet’, I cannot walk for long or be on my feet in the kitchen for too long … so bike riding ( outside) works, as well as my WaterRower inside on damp days. I have waxed on about my love for Pilates, but there’s a cost to it, so my weekly deep water pool workout is only $42 CAD for seniors for 10 sessions. It keeps me off my feet and is a powerful workout. But I think you steer clear of pools, right ?
Hope you find solutions to your sore feet, but high five ✋ to you for getting back to the gym.

    1. I am not a water person, correct 🙂

  24. barbara gilbert says:

Try heating up your muffin tin before adding the egg vegetable mixture spray inside of muffin tin after heated.

  25. I love the Greek Egg Muffins from Ikneadtoeat.com. I just spray muffin tins and that works well. I had some silicone liners but they held on to the eggs and wouldn’t let go. I wonder if the brand matters.

  26. Have a wonderful trip and don’t forget your charging cords. Every time I had to fly through Chicago on my way to Florida, they lost my luggage for days. The air tags sound like an excellent idea. If you are gone a long time, the FedEx sounds like a winner. Have fun in all of your cute outfits!

  27. I have one of those hat clips–I LOVE it for the on/off hat situations or travel. I even use it in the car and hang my hat from the dry cleaner/coat hook on the side!

My favorite flats are now from Vivaia! I tried both Rothy’s and Birdies-Vivaia have more support and squish if that makes sense. Padding I suppose. LOL. The other shoe that I’ve found actually helps my *lower back* of all things is Oofos. Not the prettiest but I have a pair of flip flops and also my slippers. Wow, my back actually unclenches when I put those on. Ahhh.

    1. I just ordered a pair from Amazon…I hope they fit.

  28. Love your travel outfit. Cant wait to see if you have one closer to spring. I make egg bites all the time. I use 5 eggs and 3 egg beaters which is 9 tablespoons of egg beaters and 1 cup almond milk. I use whatever vegetables I have usually onion pepper broccoli and mushrooms and a little turkey sausage. Mine turn out great and I just spray my muffin pan.

    1. WOW…my pan must be bad.

  29. Jennifer- hope your trip goes well. After traveling constantly for 20 years for work I learned to put into my carry on what is critical. And for sure a complete outfit or two in case you have to wait luggage to be delivered.
Shoes- I have Achilles issues and have found brands Sesto Meucci ( not a bargain brand but last forever) and Van Eli and Stuart Weizmann ( preferably on sale as this brand has really gone up in price!). All are comfortable and fit well.
I have used the silicone baking cups for a frozen dessert. I got mine on Amazon.
I will be very interested in what you learn from everyone on here about shoes.
    Thanks!

    1. Thanks for sharing those brands. I’ll check them out.

  30. I’ve always checked luggage and never lost any, even when travelling across countries. I don’t want to have to drag carry on around airports. A backpack has always been my go to. It leaves you hands free. I’m about to go on a cruise and bought the Apple Air Tags. Interesting concept! I’ve packed some necessities in my backpack, just in case, to get me through the first day – a complete change of clothes, bathing suit, medications, nightie…I’m hopeful that my luggage will follow me. Being on a cruise ship without proper clothes for the evening will not be fun.

    1. You’re smart to carry some necessities with you. Have fun!!

  31. I wear Asics nimbus running shoes for walking.
I had Mortons neuroma in one foot and plantar fasciitis in the other. The runners in a half size larger really helped and wearing shoes with an arch as well. I can walk for hours now.
I am travelling to Arizona for the first time in 2 weeks. Scottsdale, Sedona Grand Canyon, and Page.
Any tips on what to pack? Will be hiking and walking a lot.
Also, any tips on where to shop?
Living in Canada with limited shopping I’m really looking forward to the variety.
I pack a carry on with the better clothes in it and the checked bag with older things in it if it goes missing. Also with an air tag in the checked bag.
    Miami sounds great. Have fun!

    1. Take layers as it can be warm in the daytime but as the sun dips it can get very cold. If you are staying in Grand Canyon might take your flannels for sleep. It gets very cold and windy. Watch the weather for your destination. This is usually a great time for AZ, I have children and grandchildren that live there. But this crazy weather we have had lately, all bets are off. Enjoy your trip!

    2. You’re going to such glorious spots! I’m not sure what the weather will be like there but I always suggest layers.

I’m another one with major shoe fitting issues (narrow heel, high arch, wide foot with bunions, lost cushioning in foot pads & lacking ability to bend to tie shoelaces, etc. ) plus being very old. Since finding Sketchers about 5 years ago (around $90-$100) I will never go back. They’ve been god-sends!

    1. What styles of Sketchers work best for narrow feet?

    2. I know they are very, very popular.

  33. Hi Jennifer
I have the same issues with my egg bites. They stick so bad to the pan we have to soak the pan for two days to get it clean.
I just ordered some OXO silocone liners. We will see if this helps.
    Have fun on your trip.
    Candice

  34. About 15 years ago I met a German women who was an engineer who helped to discover and produce silicone bakeware. She said that she would not use the product becuse of the chemicals in them. Because of that I have never bought silicone items, but they sure appeal to me.

  35. Nancy Dunning says:

I have recently discovered the Trader Joes mini egg frittatas which are frozen and come 2 to a box. OMG. My hubby and I are hooked on them. 2.5 minutes in the microwave.
270 calories for two. We make a breakfast sandwich with an english muffin but you don’t have to. I love Cole Hahn slip ons. Always well made and comfortable.

Have a great trip! We always check our luggage and no issues.

  36. I usually fly with a carryon but, on our cruise last year, the cruise line lost my suitcase. Luckily they “found” it shortly before we sailed. Proper makes some good supportive shoes. Some are pretty ortho looking but their travel active are nice.

  37. I too think it may be your muffin tin doesn’t release properly. I just purchased the America’s Test Kitchen top-rated pan, which is the Oxo Good Grips Pro muffin Tin (gold finish) from Amazon. Nordicware is excellent, too.

But the interesting point is these pans discourage you from using nonstick spray bc it decreases successful release over time. The baker’s sprays which simulate oil + flour are generally recommended, not the Pam type.

    1. Interesting!! I’ve been using non-stick spray

  38. I too have foot comfort issues and Zerogrand fabric loafers have been great.

    1. I’ll check them out, thanks

  39. I started going to a podiatrist a few years ago and it’s been very helpful. He recommended I mostly wear lace up shoes (I was NOT happy with that news, but it does make a difference and I was able to justify my Paul Green sneakers :). He also recommended I wear Super Feet inserts (he told me which ones to get and told me there is is a half insert that you can get for your flats which helps). I also always get my walking and running shoes at my local Fleet Feet as they are experts on fit. I hope your feet feel better soon!

    1. Hmmm…I seldom wear lace-ups. I wonder why that helps.

  40. Hi Jennifer, I am late to the party this morning, but I, too, have used UPS and FedEx to the hotel. I pack a small carry on bag for the plane so I know I will have access to a few things immediately upon arrival. I pack the outfits that go in the boxes in those jumbo ziplock bags. It cuts down on wrinkling, and if the box should get wet, it’s still all good. Have a great trip!!😎

  41. Hi Jennifer,
I love all the comments on eggs and shoes. Good supportive shoes are so important. I use Vionic and Merrell most often. I am hard on shoes so I have to get new ones every few months. ASL and Tory Birch ballets are beautiful but the toe box was too tight for my right foot which has grown to be a half size larger. It sounds like you may have the same issue. My foot is narrow so going up a half size makes them too wide and sloppy. Looking forward to your travel outfit. I need one that can get me from chilly Oakland to sunny humid Kauai next week. I am having trouble putting one together. Safe travels to you.

    1. Have a wonderful time in Kauai!

  42. Hi,
Have you tried Garden Lites frozen frittatas ? They are gluten free.

I have been wearing black slip on Sketchers lately . Very comfortable. There are several that look good on, that are sleek and stylish for running errands. I also have some white Nike’s in white. When we go to Florida, I wear comfort sandals because my feet get hot.

I have a problem knee and feet. I use the sit down bike or elliptical. They are easy on joints. Try not to overdo, as our bodies need to recover. I do no more than 45min. for cardio, but I go everyday. I fi go longer I pay for it.

I think with all the suggestion about tags, I will get some for our next trip. I always check bags. They have never lost our bags, but they were delayed till next day, only twice.

Your travel clothes look great. Have fun!

  43. Barb🇨🇦 says:

Love silicon muffin liners. Muffins slide right off

  44. Yes to silicone liners. Has anyone suggested Rothy shoes? I have the driving loafers and they’re great. Love your travel look, and best of luck with checking your bag, you are due for success this time!

  45. One more thing about traveling and Air Tags. I keep one in my backpack/purse when traveling. If it gets away from me I can find it! Also the Air Tag lets my kids back home know where I am with out texting them. Diane

    1. Great points! I’ll put one in my purse too.

  46. Judy Drasin says:

I recommend a supportive sneaker for your walks on the treadmill. Support is important and I like New Balance. When I shop for walking shoes I ask for the most supportive sneaker. You will feel better in that type of shoe. Have fun in Florida.
    Judy

  47. Egg bites – I use silicon liners in the air fryer, but definitely will look at the appliance on Amazon too. I have to wear proper workout shoes for distance walking – New Balance, Saucony, or Ryka. I wish I was going to Miami too, I am so ready for some travel!

    1. Air fryer? What a great idea.

  48. Home Economist here. I make the egg bites on a weekly basis. Try using Wilton cake release, just brush the inside of the muffin tin before baking and they almost fall out. Also, try sautéing the veggies first to remove some of the water, and it seems to help get more veggies into the ‘bite’.
    PS Absolutely love your blog!!

    1. Thanks for the tips. I think the sautéing might be a big help. Add taste too!

  49. I’d love to see more ideas for a travel wardrobe. My husband and I are taking a trans-Atlantic cruise to England, then a 2 week cruise of Norway followed by 5 days in Iceland. Obviously a carry-on is not going to cut it. All the cold weather travel tips I’ve read feature young, fit, slim women and their suggestions are not at all helpful to an overweight 72 year old. This will be our first trip in 4 years, either a great adventure or a disaster! BTW, in our earlier travels, we always checked our bags and never had a problem. Hope that luck continues. Enjoy your trip to Florida.

    1. We loved Iceland! Your trip sounds glorious. Layers are always critical when so travel. We’ve just been talking about that transatlantic cruise. Great idea and no jet lag!

  50. Leslie Lord says:

Sorry to hear about your foot fatigue. A new pair of athletic shoes might be a good fix.
As for the egg bites. I use a silicone pan and fill the cups 2/3 full then set the pan in a 9X15 baking pan with a couple of inches of water. They pop out easily and are cooked to perfection…they freeze well too so you can make a bigger batch.
    Have fun in Miami!
    Leslie
    Hostess of The Humble Bungalow.

    1. Brilliant! Thanks, Leslie. I hope we get to see each other this summer.

  51. We have our third cruise to Alaska coming up in a couple of months (we love to cruise!) and I can’t wait to start packing! I always wear sneakers on the plane and for walking around town (in this case, Seattle) before we embark and Dr. Scholl’s Madison slip-ons are my favorite right now. For a bit dressier look, Rothy’s The Point are my favorite. I have both styles in several colors. I always check a bag due to TSA limits as I can’t do without my products, but we use luggage trackers. We’ve had Gegos for the last couple of years with pretty good success (as far as tracking goes), but we just purchased some SmartTags (for Samsung) after I read about how great Apple AirTags work and, so far, they seem to be pretty great! It really gives us peace of mind being able to know exactly where our bags are at all times. I also puchased a hat clip, a Klipsta, before our trip to Hawaii last fall as I usually wear a sun hat when out and about, and I knew I’d have to take off my hat when we visited Iolani Palace. I just removed my hat and clipped it to my bag and it worked great, so I think that that’s a very good purchase. Have a wonderful trip, Jennifer!

  52. I’m a daily walker with plantar fasciitis and I wear these SB Sox Plantar Fasciitis Relief Soxs (Amazon) every time I walk; I also switch out my New Balance sneakers each day, never wear the same pair two days in a row. I get relief from flare ups by using a Tens machine that my podiatrist recommended. As for egg bites, I gave up on the cups and instead make mine in an 9 x 12 Pyrex dish; I cut them into squares and take them on the golf course with me. They are not portion controlled but still a good source of protein!

    1. Good idea! Cutting them is easier than portioning into muffin tins.

  53. Favorite loafers of all time are Sam Edelman Lorraine. They don’t look comfy but I swear I can walk all day in them. I have had some luck with Rockport ballet flats, with the total motion hidden wedge, and also Vionic ballet slippers. For aerobics, or for walking I always choose New Balance. And I don’t use them for anything but walking outdoors or exercise class. That way they last longer.
Never in years of traveling have I had a luggage problem. I will say however the only time I check bags is on the way home, when it really does not matter so much that it arrives with me. We’ve made several trips to Europe of two weeks with a European size carry on (they are smaller) and a small frameless backpack each, plus a purse of reasonable size for everyday carrying for me. No issues, but we usually rent apartments and have a washer at least, if not a dryer.

  54. Your carryon caught my eye. I’m needing a new one, so I’d like to hear more about yours. I’ve been using silicone muffin pan liners and they work well. As far as I know, they’re safe, but that’s a concern for me as well.

    1. I finally bought a new one by Mono’s and really like it. Its only drawback is it doesn’t have the capacity to expand if you need extra space coming home from a trip. Otherwise, it’s fabulous! I will share more soon.

  55. What a well-timed post for me! Leaving tonight for a short trip to Punta Cana. Driving through the night down to Chicago for a 5 AM flight. No worries about in-flight entertainment, I’ll be studying my eyelids! I always travel with a carry on, mainly because I hate lugging a big suitcase around but have also had checked bags that went on their own adventures without me. Does it irk anyone else that some airlines charge more for carry-on’s as they do for checked bags? After all, we’re doing all the work! Being a free spirit I’m primarily just taking a couple swim suits, my Hawaiian Rip Skirts, a few tee shirts and my new Quince jumpsuit. Easy peasy! While a splurge for me, I love my Tieks and find them to be very comfortable. Have even bought a pair from Poshmark to match a certain outfit. Looking forward to your future travel posts. There’s always more to learn from one another!

  56. I visited a running shoe store last summer after my husband thought I was pronating a bit as I walked. They actually measured my foot (first time that has happened in years), had me stand on a computerized pad that generated a display of my foot, and watched me walk. It turned out that I pronate very little, but they had me try on a variety of running/walking shoes. I bought a pair of Brooks, but they told me the New Balance brand is very similar. I made my choice mainly on the color of the shoes! 🙂 The Brooks have a wide toe box but still fit my. more narrow heel well. They are very comfortable during my walks.

I can’t wait to see your posts from Miami! I also follow Tania and Jolynne, so I will live in the sunshine vicariously through the three of you.

  57. Ups your clothes to hotel and take carry on bag with essentials like meds. Pre arrange with hotel.

    1. I’m looking into that tomorrow. Thank you!

  58. Fed ex and UPS is a good idea. Maybe try two luggage options, one being carry on?
I would switch to a bike when my feet hurt. I have latex allergies, so some comfortable shoes I can’t wear.
I can wear, Nike exercise shoes, Ecco, Clark’s ( older shoes were made better), Aquaitlia, La Canadian. I have narrow heels and a wider forefoot, all ballet, loafers, and pumps fall off.
I’m a disaster in the kitchen, no advice from me…🤷‍♀️

    1. Bikes aren’t my fav but that’s what I’ve been thinking about trying.

      1. Recumbent sit down bikes at the gym are wonderful.

      2. If you are flying direct to Miami, you shouldn’t have a problem. I live in Naples and fly frequently to Westchester Airport on Jet Blue and never have a problem!

      3. I have to change planes which I suspect is where I might have an issue

      4. I have a pre or recumbent bike at home. Very comfortable and worth the investment.

      5. Good to know. I will have to try one

    2. Same here! Loafers RARELY work, ballet flats and pumps NEVER! So frustrating…

Has anyone tried Vivaia shoes, similar to Birdies/Rothys/Allbirds w/ knit fabric, lots of interesting styles?

They target me as a person w/ bunions.

      1. I wear size 11 (!), have bunions and found Vivaia shoes to gap along the sides of my feet. But they were quite comfortable!

      2. They sound great!

  59. Enjoy your trip!
Regarding shoes, I second the suggestion by Yvonne to be fitted at a shoe store that specializes in running and walking shoes. The best ones not only measure your foot, but watch while you walk on their treadmill to see how you land, if you pronate, etc. then make a personalized recommendation.
Do you have a sous vide? It’s my impression that’s how Starbucks makes its egg whites. A few years ago I made them in a sous vide using 4 oz. Ball jars and lids. Just popped them in the fridge when done. Thanks for the reminder to try this again.

    1. I’d never heard of a sous vide! Had to google that one. They sound fascinating.

  60. I like the idea of the egg bites. Quick and easy to warm up in the morning! On our recent travels I put Apple Air Tags in each of our suitcases. Luckily we have never lost a suitcase. I don’t like to mess with the carry on bags.

  61. I am a daily walker and boy have I had to learn a lot about my feet and what shoes work. My Podiatrist said to always buy a half size bigger for walking shoes. I also need a bigger toe box. It really helps to get fitted. Have a wonderful trip.

    1. I’m also leaning forward onto the balls of my feet when I walk, which is adding extra pressure. I think a podiatrist trip sounds like a great idea. I haven’t seen one in many years.

      1. You may need more padding in the forefoot if you have a heavy foot strike.

      2. I think you’re right

    2. Lynne A Johnson says:

You might try when baking egg dishes to put the pan in another pan filled with water. My eggs cook better and don’t stick.
I like Clark, Ecco, Sacony and Vionic shoes for comfort. Clarks nearly always fit my foot perfectly. I’m 75 and don’t have foot issues. Most shoes aren’t made as nicely as they used to be, but sadly, most things aren’t. Looking forward to your posts this week. There are some yummy colors for spring!

  62. Pat Englund says:

The egg bites! I love Starbucks but I’ve never attempted to make them at home. I’ve bought the Costco version and they’re ok but not as good. There are some great ideas here this morning.
I have a favorite pair of flats that are cream with black patent heel and toe trim by White Mountain which I love. They’re super supportive and comfortable and can go polished casual or a little dressy. I love them for travel with nice black leggings and a long cardigan and simple accessories including a lightweight crossbody bag that I can put in my larger “personal item” that also contains some essential items.
As for travel, we do long trips annually and it’s a challenge to pack for an extended stay.. We’ve only had a few issues but it’s never nice. I like the idea of the air tags.
I hope your trip is perfect in every way!

    1. You ladies always have the best ideas. Your travel outfit sounds much like what I wear.

  63. After several surgeries and breaks, my feet require comfort and support. I recommend On running shoes. I have 3 pairs now. The ones I use every day walking on the treadmill are these: https://www.on-running.com/en-us/products/cloudnova-26/womens/navy-white-shoes-26.99114. But I do still have days my feet hurt too much to walk. Also, I add Superfeet insoles to all my shoes. There are many different Superfeet insoles so I’d recommend going to a running store that sells them and they can help you figure out which ones will work best for you.

    1. I just ordered a pair of those. I hope they’re comfy. Thank you

  64. Hi Jennifer,

Love your travel outfit! We have not visited FL, on our travel list though.

Good luck, must try the egg bites! Thanks for being so humble and honest, it is the reason I read your blog first thing every morning.

    Safe travels my friend!

    1. Thank you, Mary Ann! I love this community of women and I’m so glad you’re here.

  65. Perhaps try a carbon steel muffin pan. Once it’s seasoned, it should work fine. Chef Erica Wides (@funnypeoplemakingfood on IG – highly recommend!) turned me onto carbon steel. Another non-toxic option would be ceramic.

Looking forward to seeing your trip outfits and I hope you’ll have a great time.

    1. Her account sounds great, too!

      1. I use Circulon baking pans of all types and everything just seem to slide right out of them without sticking. Perhaps that would work for your egg bites.

  66. Good morning Jennifer, I am enjoying reading A Well Styled Life! My advice to you in making egg bites would be to Sous Vide them. They turn out amazing and they taste better than Starbucks! If you do some research on this method of cooking you will find that you can sous vide almost anything!
Have a wonderful trip and I am looking forward to hearing all about it! Sherry

    1. Good morning, Sherry. You’re the second person to mention the sous vide. I’m going to have to check into them. They sound fascinating.

  67. Deborah H says:

Jennifer, my grandchildren love the Starbucks egg bites and my daughter bought an egg bite maker. I think she ordered it on Amazon. They cook evenly and look just like the Starbucks ones and she can control what goes in them.

  68. I have foot issues with bunions. I walk everyday and so as of right now I am wearing On Cloud, I like them but they can be pricey. I also need dress shoes and a nice pair of sneakers to wear out on the weekends. Its hard to find shoes the older you get. Thanks for everyones recommendation.

    1. Mary Frances says:

If you have ball of foot issues, i recommend Fitflops with their heavily cushioned soles. You need to read about their various soles to get the most cushiest ones. Also, I highly recommend Hoka sneakers, but, again, read to find a Plush sole.

  69. Being a FL girl, its usually either Nikes or sandles. When my feet are really yelping, the most comfortable are fitflops – the only thing comfortable with a flare up of plantar fascititis. I use a silicone cupcake tray – no spray necessary & just throw in the dishwasher. I’ve never had lost luggage, knock on wood, but always anxiety causing to wait for checked luggage on the conveyor. Hope you have a fabulous vacation & trip.

  70. I recently bought a pair of Vivaia ballet flats, and they are wonderful. The claim of no break in time is true. Very comfy! Lots of styles and colors. And machine washable, which is great for a travel shoe. Happy travels!

  71. There are quite a few recipes for Starbuck egg bites online. I would have said that you are missing cream, which is what goes in a quiche, but it turns out that they use cottage cheese. Good luck.

  72. Love that travel outfit! Eileen Fisher crepe pants are truly perfect for traveling. I have had a black pair for over fifteen years–worth every penny. For shoes, have you tried Hoka? More like a workout shoe, but quite comfortable. P.S. I almost always check a bag and have only had problems with late luggage once. Chances are, you will be ok. But if you are worried, an air tag might be worth the cost. Have a great trip!

    1. They are the best! I’m packing several this time. I bought an air tag after my last lost luggage experience 😁

  73. Mary Charters says:

For comfy shoes my very favorites are Rothy. The styles I find most comfortable are the round toe V, the point toe V and the original sneaker. Sneaker is a bit heavier but all are super comfy. I also have their loafer but it seems to run a tiny bit smaller. Probably perfect 1/2 size up though. My next favorite are Tory Burch ballet flats. Cole Hahn used to have Zero Gravity shoes that are like wearing slippers but not sure if they still make them.

Now I’m going to have to make some egg bites after hearing how great they are from everyone!

    1. Rothy’s are my favorite too! My current obsession is The Loafer. My feet have gotten too wide 🫤 for the pointed toe flats I used to love. The Loafer is so cute, not quite a sneaker, a little dressier but still very comfortable.

      1. My Rothy’s are pretty well worn and old. I should try the loafer.

  74. beth byrd says:

I’m not a traveler, but if I were I’d probably pack it all in a carry on. That way you know where everything is at all times. As for the egg bites, I use an aluminum pan with parchment liners and they come out perfect with no sticking. It looks like you make have too many veggies. Also, if you are using frozen spinach make sure all of the water is drained out. Your travel outfit is lovely!

    1. I’m thinking too many veggies too. It only occurred to me as I uploaded my picture.

  75. Good morning! In all my years of traveling I have only had 1 misplaced checked bag incident – sending positive thoughts for your upcoming trip! I use the silicone muffin cops all the time and love them – I agree that you should cut back on veggies – they are probably adding too much moisture. Count me in the I Need New Sneakers Club – after hip replacement surgery my surgery leg is considerably shorter than the other causing back and ankle pain – I need better footwear and a walking routine! Loved the teals in the travel outfit – would definitely wear !

    1. Who knew sneakers were such an issue? Glad to hear your surgery went well. I’m finding that having the right shoes is critical.

      1. I always fret about losing my luggage. My husband hates to drag even his carryon and always checks it, too. Despite flying to Florida every year and internationally twice a year, we haven’t lost one yet, not even when we miss a connection. I still believe it is just a matter of time… For ballet flats, I love Ann Klein and Naturlizer.

    2. I have had three hip replacements and also ended up with one leg 3/4” shorter than the other. I ordered in-shoe heel lifts on Amazon to help even me out on the shorter leg and they help considerably. They come in different heights and colours so I can also use them in my Fitflop sandals and sneakers.

      1. Thank you so much for sharing those, Lynda. They sound so helpful.

    3. Cath🇨🇦 says:

Paula, I discovered that I have a length disparity as well… due to scoliosis in my lower spine … so other than having a good cobbler add 1/2-3/4 “ to my left shoe, such as a slip on , I can add soft cushion lifts in shoes that have deep insides at back heel and that is all I require. Funny how ‘out of whack’ I feel when trying on new shoes without any lift on my left side…it is so obvious.
Because having one shoe lifted, which can be rather expensive, I tend to buy shoes on sale ,if possible , to allow for the expense. I have hip and lower back because of this disparity, and rarely go shoeless anywhere. Even my slippers are fixed. Hope this gives you some ideas.

      1. Thank you for sharing, Cath

  76. Regarding the Egg Bites, I make mine with the same ingredients you do or I will put some bacon bits in as well. I do 3/4 eggs to 1/4 egg whites and they seem fine. I also use parchment paper muffin liners and they work wonderfully!

    1. I have parchment paper and never thought to try it. Sheesh. It seems a natural.

    2. I TOTALLY agree with the parchment muffin cups. I use them for Yorkshires and never have a problem and they make for an easy cleanup.

  77. I make baked eggs in my muffin pan … crack a WHOLE egg in each WELL sprayed muffin cup; use a fork and break the yolk, bake at 350 for 12-13 minutes. I remove them from the cup immediately … sometimes they stick a little, but not so much to be “disastrous” … I like to top my baked egg with hot sauce or salsa because I like them spicy 😉 Maybe the key is to use whole egg.

    1. That’s beginning to seem like a big part of my problem. Thank you!

  78. Good morning! Always enjoy your blog and happy travels to you. Just wanted to share with you that I also have bad feet (cosmetologist standing on cement floors for 42 years) plus hips and lower back. I had to give up on treadmill and now only use the elliptical. It works great for my daily work out. A visit to the podiatrist every year and a list of approved shoes have helped immensely..
    Blessings to you.

    1. My favorite at home/walking shoes are the eSplash shoes from Easy Spirit.
Not stylish but I have bunions, fallen arches, wide width, the whole gambit. I also have hot feet. These walking shoes/ sandals are amazing and work well for my issues. I have yet to find a stylish, comfortable pair of loafers or flats that offer any comfort. Mind you I own those shoes, just am crippled wearing them by the end of the night. When I was younger I crammed my feet into shoes that were not wide enough just to be stylish. As a senior, all I want is happy feet.

      1. I hear you!! I want happy feet too.

    2. I feel so short on the elliptical, as though I have to lean forward. I’ll have to her then to show me what I’m doing wrong.

      1. The elliptical is made for a long stride. We had one for years and my husband loved it and it always caused me problems. I am 5’2” and have short legs. I switched to the Nordictrack bike which now has a 22” screen and with your Fitbit account you can ride anywhere in the world. So fun. Alternate with the treadmill and you get a better balance in your cardio workouts. Add light weights and a yoga routine and you’ll be magic.

      2. Thanks for explaining, Sydney. I have tried them several times and they hurt my lower back. This may be why.

    3. Jan Finger says:

I’ve seen the hat holder in ads and am wondering if they really hold. I’ll be curious to hear how it works for you.

  79. Janis Laws says:

Jennifer, as a daily walker for exercise, I too had my share of issues. My pediatrist recommended Hoka’s and Brook’s for activity and Vionic for dress.

  80. Silicone muffin cups (from Amazon) are great! I took muffin sized individual pizza bites to a meeting and they slipped right out of the cups and the clean up is a breeze. Use them all the time for individual servings .

    1. Great to know! Thanks

      1. Parchment paper baking cups will solve your muffins from sticking in the pan. It works like a charm! There is no need to buy new muffin pans. I made bran muffins this morning and they were prefect in my old muffin tins that I’ve used for 40 years.

  81. Pat Patterson says:

Good morning Jennifer, I also had checked luggage not arrive with me at my destination. I’ve never rd used air tags but several friends have and say they would never travel without them. My husband and I are taking a nine day Mediterranean cruise in august and will be checking 2 bags, hoping for the best 😄. Have a great time in Miami. Safe travels

    1. Your cruise sounds dreamy. Have fun

  82. I so enjoy your Monday musings, the more random the better.
Have you thought of going for a shoe fitting at a specialty running store? As a former runner, I still buy my walking shoes at The Running Room as they are experienced at finding the shoe that is the best fit for you.

    1. That’s a great idea. I’ll need to drive a ways to find one but the payoff will be worth it.

  83. I’ve been making Vegetable Quiche Cups from the South Beach Diet for many years. The ingredients are the same as what you are making, so you may want to give it a try (the recipe can be easily found by googling). The cups are small, only about halfway up the muffin cups, low cal, and delicious. They are good hot or at room temperature, and I’ve often taken then to gatherings as an appetizer. They are always eaten right away.

    1. Those sound yummy. I just checked the recipe. The joy sauce sounds like a great idea! Thanks

  84. I can heartily recommend the silicone muffin cups. I have had mine for years, bought them at Crate and Barrel. The egg or conventional muffins slip out with ease and clean up is a breeze, either by hand or in the dishwasher. (Mine look like the paper ones, without the little handles, and are also available on Amazon for half the price)

    1. Great to know. Thank you.

  85. Joe Ann Kingdon says:

Jennifer, we have been making “egg cups” for my husband for several years and after disasterous results from those nonstick muffin tins, I found that these all aluminum heavy duty ones work splendidly–with little spray and hand washing:
Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Muffin Pan, 12 Cup–from Amazon, of course! I will say that we use a dozen whole eggs so maybe that makes a difference?
    Good luck!

    1. I was wondering if the whites made a difference. Thanks I’ll check that pan out.

  86. I know other people who have used Fed Ex and UPS as Janet suggested. My friends have had good results with this option. Safe travels Jennifer.

  87. Kathleen Ryan says:

Really appreciate your input on shoes. I’m tiny but my feet are wide at the toe (bunions!) and narrow at the heel so I’m going to try some of your suggestions.
I NEVER check a bag, either!

    1. Let us know what works for you

  88. Good Morning Jennifer – Lost Luggage Option – Since we are experiencing so many air cancellations, have you thought about Fed Ex, UPS, other mail delivery services for overnight delivery to your hotel? This has worked in the past for my by alerting the hotel that the luggage would be arriving. Also eliminates baggage claim. Have a wonderful trip to Miami?

    1. I discovered Mgemi shoes a few years ago and love them. They are so comfortable and cute. I have a size 5/5.5 foot and they came in my size. Great as your feet widen and last. They run a bit large, but worth every penny. I find the regular loafers better than the driving ones. I have begun putting AirTags in my luggage. They were so helpful when British Air lost my luggage at Heathrow. Enjoy your trip. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

    2. I had not thought about that and it’s a brilliant idea. Thank you, Janet
