New Arrivals from Chico’s, Talbots, and J. Jill: August 2023

Although we still have lots of warm weather left, early fall collections are beginning to trickle into the stores. Iā€™m always excited to see which colors, prints, and fabrics the brands focus on. I’ve been studying the new arrivals at several of our favorite retailers, and I’m happy to share my findings with AWSL readers. Today, we’re discussing the new arrivals from Chico’s, Talbots, and J. Jill for August of 2023.

I think another try-on session is in order soon so I can see these new arrivals in person. You can check out the latest Dressing Room Diaries here:

August New Arrivals from Chico’s

Chico’s new arrivals offer a perfect balance of quality basics that you can wear year-round and layer-friendly pieces that will help you effortlessly transition into fall. They always do a fabulous job of coordinating their collections so that you can mix and match pieces to create endless outfits. Their “Color of the Moment” is sable which is a luxurious dark reddish-brown that I think will look stunning this fall.

Floral Long Kimono

The lightweight and flowing design of this kimono makes it a great layering option. It has a beautiful flora and fauna design that’s a great scale, so it doesn’t overwhelm your frame. You can pair it with a base layer in navy, white, pink, or orange, or grab the matching tank, which is also found in Chico’s New Arrivals section.

Girlfriend Flare Jeans

I like buying jeans at Chico’s because they’re both high-quality and comfortable. I’ve been wearing different versions of their ‘Girlfriend Jean’ for years. Flare jeans are everywhere right now, and they’re a flattering option that pairs well over booties. This particular pair contains Chico’s exclusive So SlimmingĀ® Hidden Fit technology that slims and smooths through the tummy area. These come in three great denim washes.

Satin Floral Tie-Front Shirt

If you love a bold floral print, you’ll like this satiny split-neck tie-front blouse in sable brown. This would be a versatile piece to add to your late summer and fall wardrobe. Just a simple switch in pants and accessories could take the look from casual to dressy.

Gold Tone Drop Link Earrings

I love the texture and shape of these gold-tone drop-link earrings. You can mix and match these with your existing jewelry or grab the coordinating necklace and bracelet from Chico’s new arrival section.

Jacquard Floral Cardigan

Here’s another layering piece that will work so well for transitioning from one season to the next. The material is ultra-lightweight, which allows you to wear it on warm summer days without overheating.

August New Arrivals from Talbots

I was already at Talbots earlier this month checking out their 4th of July sale, but a lot of new products have arrived since then. I love shopping at Talbots because of their attention to detail and their high-quality craftsmanship. Their latest additions have inspired some stylish ensembles for the season ahead.

Woven Leather Tote

Every fall, I gravitate towards camel and cognac-colored leather totes, belts, and shoes. They look so rich paired with black, navy, and charcoal gray. This stunning woven tote bag checks all of the boxes. Rich, beautiful color, gorgeous texture, and large enough to carry all of your daily essentials plus extra items like an umbrella, tablet, etc. This tote would also be perfect now.

Cotton Button Front Shirt

Talbots has great quality button-down shirts. This fun berry-colored one is made with lightweight, breathable cotton. You could easily wear this untucked, but I would probably tie it or tuck it in to add a little definition to my waist.

Denim A-Line Midi Skirt

Do you wear skirts often? I seldom do and wonder why because theyā€™re infinitely more comfortable than most jeans or pants. This denim midi skirt will look great now with sandals and can be worn with boots in just a few short months.

Houndstooth Blazer

This blazer is named Houndstooth Blazer, but it’s definitely a Glen Plaid pattern. Regardless, Iā€™m a big fan of blazers because I love the strong statement they make and theĀ polish they give to an outfit. Jeans and a blazer are a go-to look for me during the fall because itā€™s seldom cold enough for a full-on coat.

Drawstring Waist Poplin Shirt

This flattering poplin shirt is a great stand-alone option during warm weather and an even better layering piece when autumn weather arrives. The cinched waist slims the look, so you could wear it over narrow pants or leggings.

J. Jill’s New Arrivals for August

Last but not least, we have another great retailer: J. Jill. One of my favorite things about J. Jill is their size inclusion. They streamlined their sizing so that every style is available as regular in sizes XS-4X. Petite and tall are still available in some popular styles, and all sizes are priced similarly.

Tie-Front Shirtdress

This gingham tie-front shirt dress looks like the quintessential summer dress perfect for picnics, barbecues, and lunch dates with the girls. It also comes in a solid navy.

Draped-Front Jacket

This lightweight jacket would be a great transitional jacket for fall and even throughout the winter if you live in a place with a milder climate. The neutral color will allow you to wear it over a multitude of tops and dresses, and the asymmetric button-front closure will add a touch of interest to your outfit.

Maxi Dress

Comfortable dresses like this double-face jersey-seamed maxi dress make getting dressed on warm days effortless. I’ve had several things in this jersey and love its weight. Simply grab a great necklace and a comfortable pair of sandals for a summer ensemble that can be put together in minutes. Add a light jacket or cardigan for cool evenings when crisp fall weather arrives.

Wearable Double-Face Jersey Slub-Textured Jacket

Remember the ‘shacket’ madness of the last few years? Well, meet the shacket’s grown-up older sister. This shirt-jacket skims the body with flattering princess seams for a polished and sleek work-or-play look.

What colors do you gravitate to for autumn?

  1. Chicos is kind of over the top.for me . Talbots and JJill more to my liking.
Thanks for showing different styles for all of us gals but
    ..

  2. I love JJill jackets and have a couple that have been workhorse ā€œthird piecesā€. The good ones sell out quickly so I donā€™t wait for sales. I ordered the cream colored jacket you mention. I am 4ā€™10ā€ and ordered the Small Petite my usual size. Fabric nice and color okay. The side seam pockets are small and really are in the side seams so very hard to reach. The model wears the jacket open. If you button the asymmetrical buttons, on me it looked like a waiter or old-time dentist jacket. Also the sleeves are generously sized in circumference. Returned. Looking forward to your try-on sessions, Jennifer.

    1. I agree the best pieces sell out very fast. Sorry that jacket didn’t work for you.

  3. love the houndstooth blazer with the blue striped T-shirt. I would of never thought to put the two together but it works perfectly

    1. I love that combo too

  4. I really love some of these outfits. Can’t wait for fall and fall clothes. My favorite season.

  5. The stunning outfit on the model was lovely but overwhelming for petite me. I love the bold pattern on everyone else. I will continue to wear navy, narrow stripped tees and switch to jeans as it cools down. The monsoons have arrived here so we should be cooler in the rain cooled evenings. I could pull a white shirt on over my tee as a light weight cover. Very casual here.

  6. Once again youā€™ve supplied us with terrific options and ideas to incorporate as we transition into late summer and early autumn. Looking forward to seeing more from you!
    Have a wonderful day,
    Rebecca

    1. I’m excited for fall clothes! I’m heading to do a try on today!

  7. Mary Frances says:

It’s still puzzling that midi skirts that end at the widest part of the leg are ok after all the trashing of capri length pants.

    1. I prefer mine longer or shorter. If you wear them with knee boots it mitigates the issue.

  8. Although I wear a “regular” size, my sister is plus-sized. She and I and many others refuse to shop at Talbots until they stop charging more for plus sizes — and until they feature a plus-sized model actually wearing the plus-sized clothing, which often differs slightly in style and fit. The price difference drives me insane — if it’s a matter of another inch or two of fabric, then they would also charge more for Talls and less for Petites. Clearly, they do not do this.

    1. I agree, that’s a bogus thing they do. J. Jill does not!

  9. Iā€™ve noticed on a few influencers that the blazer is longer. Is the trend going longer? Perhaps, less oversized?

    1. Blazers have been longer and oversized for a few seasons. Iā€™m too short for that to work but I love the look.

  10. Some interesting colors , but I have a hard time wearing the large scale prints. They just seem to overpower me. Time to look online and see what other choices are out there.

  11. Mary Packnick says:

Greens, russet and darker reds for fall.

    1. I love those colors! I wish they loved me back.

  12. Burgundy! Makes a dark winter gal shine! I also loved the dark cool greens from last year and hope they return.

  13. The Chico prints are very overwhelming for me being a 5ā€™ petite woman. What you presented from Talbots are styles that are very matronly. I do very limited shopping at Talbots the last several years. I really was excited about the items you presented from JJill, especially the jackets.

    1. Itā€™s interesting how brands change their direction.

      1. I really like your selection of clothes. As for skirts, well, I have just put my new (fake) leather midi skirt on, paired with a soft animal print silk shirt. As for the boots, the ankle boots (even with tights) made my calves look chunky, so I now have knee high boots on. Not a look I have worn before and wondering if I look a bit ā€˜mutton dressed as lambā€™. Anyway, I am off to a chi chi evening fashion parade, so the lights will be low and it wonā€™t matter – especially after a glass of bubbles.

      2. Your outfit sounds great and I love your attitude. Enjoy Susan!

  14. Pat Patterson says:

Good morning Jennifer, what a fabulous collection of outfits. I am looking forward to trying on and buying some of these outfits!
    Have a most wonderful dayšŸ˜€

    1. Happy Tuesday Pat. Me too!
