Casual Winter Outfit Mixing Navy With Black

This post is sponsored by Nordstrom and ShopStyle. Thank you for supporting the brands that allow me to bring you fresh content.

It’s no secret that navy is a big favorite in my wardrobe these days. I haven’t given up on black, but navy is simply more flattering at my age. This brings up a question I get a lot. What are the best color shoes to wear with navy pants? I have some insights today along with another outfit composed entirely of Nordstrom Made Brands.

Navies are notorious for not matching which bothers many women when they’re looking to pair a navy pant or skirt with footwear. The truth is that most blacks don’t match either but we don’t let that stop us from combining them.

  • Navy pants and skirts look terrific with black footwear. Because they’re both dark, the contrast is low, so they allow your outfit to take center stage.
  • Charcoal is also a nice option because navy often has a cool undertone and the values (darkness) are similar.
  • If you do want to draw attention to your shoes, red, green, or metallic is a nice choice. I love a silver flat with blue pants. White has the highest contrast looks super fresh…picture white tennies and crisp navy chinos for spring.

My navy stretch pants are from 1901, which is named for the year that Nordstrom first opened their doors. They’re available in black here. They have plenty of stretch and a hidden side zip which keeps bulk from the tummy area, always a favorite for me.Ā  They’re available in regular and petite. I’m wearing an 8 regular and likely could have worn the petite.

I decided to go for a low color contrast with my sweater too.

These Caslon Susana Booties have a nice, low block heel that’s stable and comfy to walk in. Their almond-shaped toe is a classic that has more timeless appeal than a round or square toe. Reviews say they run small, but I’m wearing my regular size. If I was going to wear warmer socks, I would go up a size. I like that these slip under a narrow pant leg and will also look great with leggings tucked into them.

I couldn’t resist this Cuffed Beanie With Faux Fur Pom Pom. It’s by Treasure and Bond which is another Nordstrom made brand. The ivory is sold out but it’s still available in 4 other colors. How cute will this look sticking out of the top of a Christmas stocking?

  1. Those booties are so good looking for the price. Darn I doubt I could wear them though with my dreaded bunion. I love the black watch color combination on you …so fresh and happy!

  2. I like you hair in the photo with the white coat! Nice.

  3. Loving green this year. Looks great on you. Always wondered about wearing black shoes with navy. I’m always on the lookout for navy shoes!

    1. Me too. Green feels hopeful to
Me and we could all use hope.

What a lovely outfit. I really like the color green on you and the hat is a perfect touch.

Hi Jennifer! Your hair is looking so great in this post. Can you give an update on what products/treatments you’re using on your hair? I have fine, thin hair and it’s starting to thin. Suggestions from you on hair products/treatments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Carolyn from Colorado.

    1. Thank you! I swear by the oomph my hair gets from dry shampoo. I am also a fan of hairspray. It may seem old fashioned, but a spritz of hair spray helsp keep my hair lifted. I have been testing out a new product but it’s too soon to know…I will share soon.

  6. I think you gravitate toward bulky tops and big collars, which of course are beautiful. I just think that your frame would be more flattered by finer textured tops with more texture or pattern in pants. More attention would be drawn to your slim legs, and less to your broader shoulders. Keep things in balance. Just a suggestion.

  7. I’m just starting to pay attention to contrast in my outfit. It makes a difference for sure. I’m moving toward a lighter and warmer color in my wardrobe but will keep some black. This lovely sweater will go with my new Browns I think. Browns are really hard to match too. I’ve decided to only buy colors I love. The heck with color analysis, LOL

I’m happy you wore the pom pom beanie. I couldn’t wear one with short hair because it smashed my hair down, but now I have a bob. I was hesitant to get a beanie with a pom pom because I thought I was too old and would look foolish. But you look fabulous and gave me the courage to try it.

    1. Yay! Go for it, Mary Jo. Also, try tucking one side behind your ear.

  9. The booties are the right heel height , I wish they made these booties in a lot of colors! I have a request for outside clothes too keep me warm and fashionable (?) Iā€™m meeting friends outside a lot! Also waterproof walking boots with thicker soles. Thanks šŸ˜Š

  10. That hat is so adorable and really makes your eyes pop somehow. I actually like that the sweater is a bit big, unless trying to squeeze it under a coat. Also, love the hair.

  11. A beautiful combination of color and style without needing to over accessorize! I love this look and find it right in my comfort and confidence zone. I am hundreds of miles from the nearest Nordstrom store but you are showing me all kinds of possibilities that would work for me today! I want to be current but also value that nod of approval from my granddaughters!
Thank you for keeping us in the groove Jennifer!

    1. I am so happy to do that, Jan. I want to stay in the groove too!

  12. I really like the green sweater on you. I also find navy easier to wear than black.

  13. Love the outfit! Did I have a dark green cable once?? Why did I ditch it!
You look great in that sun!
Question….know of a boot or bootie with a broad toe …just had foot surgery and Iā€™ll need to replace most of my shoes!

    1. I actually find Birdies to be quite full in the toe box. Munro is also a good bet. Try Clarkes too

  14. I just joined the Nordy Club..thanks for the link!! If I live to a 100, I will never know why I did not join sooner. I enjoy your blog immensely and I wish you peace and joy this season.
