The Best Tommy Bahama Pieces for Women Over 50

I’ve owned plenty of Tommy Bahama pieces, but I’ve never been into one of their stores…until last week. I loved the whole vibe of the store with brightly colored tropical wallpaper that made me long for a warm weather vacation. Let’s look at some of the best Tommy Bahama pieces for late winter/ early spring 2025.

If you’re new here, a try-on is just what it sounds like. I go into a store and style some of their latest collection so readers can see what things look like on a woman over 50 rather than on a young model. I share some sizing tips and styling ideas for how you could wear them. For size reference, I’m 5’4″, which puts me on the cusp of petite. I have broad shoulders and straight hips with few curves. Tommy Bahama carries women’s sizes 00-18. My first experience tells me that Tommy Bahama does not vanity size its clothes, so what I see on the label feels more realistic than sizes on other brands’ labels.

MARINA DEL MAR PEACOAT size S / MARINA DEL MAR CROPPED PANTS size S / JERSEY LONG SLEEVE TEE size S

This Double Breasted Peacoat is a soft and cozy fleece fabric that’s perfect for spring. This also comes in a soft fern green shade that matches the long sleeve jersey tee you see poking out the top of the jacket.

The fleece pants are a pull-on style with an elastic and drawstring at the waist. The inseam is 25″, so they’re semi-cropped on me. This elevated “sweat suit” is perfect for so many occasions, and the structure keeps it from feeling schlumpy.

ARUBA CASUAL BLAZER sized S / HIGH-RISE WIDE-LEG CROP JEANS size 8 / CHAMBRAY SHIRT

Another fleece Blazer, this time a single-breasted version. This comes in 3 neutrals and seems super easy to pair with lots of things. It’s 95% cotton with 2% spandex. I love this kind of knit blazer because it’s cozy and stretchy with a structured shape. They describe it as “sophisticated ease meets the unrivaled comfort”, and I couldn’t agree more.

I styled it with this chambray shirt, which appears to be out of stock on the website.

These wide-leg crop jeans look quite cropped on the website, but on me, they’re below my ankle. Their 27″ inseam is ankle length on me. These jeans are fitted through the hips and loose through the thigh area. Many Tommy Bahama jeans are made with fabric blends that contains recycled polyester, which is made from recycled plastic bottles using less resources. I love that initiative and the jeans are very comfortable.

PALM VOYAGE FULL-ZIP JACKET size S / PALM VOYAGE WIDE-LEG PANTS size S

This Zippered Jacket and Wide-Leg Pants are made of an ultra-lightweight Modal blend fabric with 4-way stretch. It feels very similar to the Spanx scuba-type fabric. They have a small collection in this fabric, which comes in 3 colors and also includes a half zip and a dress. These elevated travel-ready separates are an easy care option that would feel so comfy on a long flight or be right at home running errands.

HIGH-RISE WIDE-LEG CROP JEANS size 8 / ZOE COTTON CREWNECK SWEATER size S / SLIM BOYFRIEND JEANS size 6

This cotton crewneck sweater is the prettiest shade of pink. Many of you dislike or can’t wear wool/cashmere, so this 100% cotton is a nice option. It’s a chunky knit that comes in 3 colors and seems to fit true to size. This would look so fresh with white jeans, and I’d love the contrast with black as well.

It’s very helpful when brands label the rise for jeans, but TB doesn’t seem to do that. They call these Boyfriend Jeans on the right a mid-rise, but I found them high enough to control any muffin top action…and I have a long rise. These have an expected loose fit, but they’re not so sloppy. The inseam is 29″ unfolded, and 26.5″ folded up so you can adjust as needed. They’re very comfy with a cotton blend that includes spandex and Tencel. The light wash increases their casual vibe and are super comfy.

CHAMBRAY SHIRT / ELLA TWILL JEANS JACKET size M / HIGH-RISE ANKLE JEANS size 8

This Ella Twill jean jacket has a soft frayed bottom without a heavy band, which makes it much comfier than jean jackets with a band. It’s a cotton blend with a hint of stretch. I’m wearing a M, which is roomy for me, so I’d go down to a small since I never button my jean jackets closed.

The high-rise ankle jeans fit like a dream. They’re a cotton/TENCEL™/Elasterell-p blend with 3% spandex blend that is very stretchy. They come in 3 colors and have an inseam of 28″. The fabric has a subtle sateen sheen, which elevates it beyond regular denim. I could have gone down to a 6 in these, so they run true to size.

On my second trip into the store, I bought this pink sweater and tried on these other looks:

LONG SLEEVE JERSEY TEE size S / ARUBA CARDIGAN size S / HIGH RISE CROP STRAIGHT JEANS size 6

These black crop straight-leg jeans are ankle length on me with an inseam of 27″. They have a soft frayed bottom, so they could be easily shortened with a snip of your scissors. These are machine washable, and they specifically call out no dry-cleaning and no liquid fabric softener. I use neither, so that’s a nonissue for me. These are another cotton blend with lots of stretch, making them uber comfy.

I style them with this long sleeve jersey tee in primrose pink and gray cardigan. The tee is a Tencel blend with 5% spandex. It has a silky feel and drapes nicely on the body. This tee comes in 4 colors with side slits at the hem. This Aruba is a cardigan shaped out of a densely knit fabric that feels fleece-like, but it’s not as heavy as the blazers above. It has an open front with no closure and comes in 5 colors. This would be so easy to toss on over many things to add some polish or a bit of warmth.

SHORT SLEEVE LINEN DRESS size S / LINEN RAW EDGE JEAN JACKET size M

Can we have a moment here for the self-tanner I should have used on my pasty winter legs? You can see the latest spot where I got a biopsy on a weird growth on my shin, which mercifully turned out to be just fine. This 100% linen short-sleeve dress is so perfect for hot weather because it includes 100% cotton lining. It’s the kind of easy piece you could just toss on and go. This is 35″ long from shoulder to hem in the small. It has a flattering v-neckline and front patch pockets.

This 100% linen jean jacket comes in 4 colors, I’m wearing the natural in M, which feels too large on me so it runs true to size. It has a classic jean jacket silhouette with a band at the waist, but because the fabric is so soft, it does not feel confining.

QUILTED SHAWL BLAZER size S /LONG SLEEVE JERSEY TEE size S / SLIM BOYFRIEND JEANS size 6

I’m back in the jersey tee and boyfriend jeans, this time topped with this quilted shawl blazer in indigo blue. It’s 100% Tencel which is created in an environmentally responsible process that transforms sustainable wood pulp into cellulosic fibers. It’s lightweight and breathable with a shawl collar and single button closure.

  1. Another vote for the linen jackets, I have 3: white, khaki and navy. In warm weather they are more comfortable than denim or cotton twill. And lighter weight for travel. Yes they’ll wrinkle enroute but I always travel with a portable steamer that does the job. I will also have to check out that pink sweater, love the color!

  2. I have shopped in Tommy Bahama for many years. They also have outlet stores. Their swimming suits are very good quality. I have the linen jean jacket in 5 colors as they are so versatile and soft. Their sizes are all over the place though so I find that I must try on the clothes and then can order online once I know how they fit. They also make reversable sweatshirts in 2 different colors which I love. Thy are called the Aruba half zip sweatshirts. I am a football fan so I have a Chiefs sweatshirt as well. I highly recommend Tommy Bahama

  3. I love the TB vibe, hope you’ll let us know when they have a sale!

  4. Love the look of the boyfriend jeans, and that linen jacket is a classic. I own it in natural and white!

“Schlumpy”! Hahahaha! What a great word! I know exactly what you mean.

    1. It’s a great visual 🙂

  6. Colette Ulliac says:

If Tommy Bahama ever makes a cropped double breasted peacoat I’ll buy one . I’ve just received my F&E Belfast and love it – but pricy !
I also think the crewneck sweater in pink heather would be a good one for us ‘summers’ .
Thanks for a great post and introducing some of us to Tommy Bahama .

    1. I adore my Belfast jackets! I think it’s my favorite item they make.

  7. Thanks for the try-on. There’s a Tommy Bahama near me in Newport (RI), but I never go in. It seems to always be busy, but all I’ve seen is the wild prints in the windows. Your choices show TB has a lot more, so I’ll venture in this spring. One deal breaker for me with the blazers, though, is that there are no useful pockets. I button my jackets and use both the lower front and side seam pockets. I suppose no lower pockets are a function of no waist band, but …. The jeans are cute as well.

  8. Jennifer you look terrific at your current weight. You are right that it makes a difference on how we carry our weight. I’m currently at 138-139 but only 5’1”. I need petite sizing and wear a 12P just to accommodate my waist now. It leaves my jeans baggy on my hips and thighs which are a 10P. Perhaps you could address problems in sizing? As we age, many of us lose that hourglass figure and are at a loss on how to find clothes that fit comfortably and stylish. I’m 80 now but still appear slimmer than I am. It is the baking cookies that can be my downfall.

    1. Thanks, Sydney. I think alterations are the best thing we can do as our shape changes. Buy for the largesr area and have thing tapered in for the slimmer spots.

  9. I recently discovered a Tommy Bahama store in my area and purchased a few of the items you tried. Really enjoyed this try on post!

  10. I have a few of the 3/4 sleeve Tommy Bahama t-shirts, which are favorites. I also have the linen jacket you wore, and a cute tropical dress for tropical themed parties (which is a thing in my world). There is a Tommy Bahama store and restaurant close by in Newport Beach – the restaurant is also great!

  11. I am jealous, Jennifer. You look so fit and trim! Your recent weight loss really shows in the scuba fabric track suit. I think you and I gained weight at around the same time. (I am just a smidge under 5’4″ and currently weigh 140.) Unfortunately for me, I have not been able to stop stress eating. Maybe, I can use you as inspiration :).

    1. I am just weighing in at 139-140, so our body shape makes a big difference in how we carry our weight. I was over 150 at the end of last summer which was way too high for my joints. I sure hope I can keep it off

  12. I’ve never been to a Tommy Bahama store but these clothes look really nice. My husband likes to buy the Hawaiian shirts. He picks out wild prints to get a rise out of me because I’m not a fan.

  13. How fun! Thanks for the new store try on info.

  14. Nice to see this store added to your posts. Would you give the link again for the 100% linen short-sleeve dress? It seems to link to the long sleeved tee.

  15. I have not shopped Tommy Bahama because all I saw through the window was crazy prints. What a find on the knit blazer and pea coat! Right to my wish list! The blazer looks like a good find for petites. The spanx like outfit looks great too! Thanks for this!

    1. Ditto! Those knit blazers are fabulous.

  16. I had no idea that Tommy Bahama had such a terrific selection of clothes for women. Love the double knit blazers – functional, practical and attractive.

    1. They are great! I had no idea how many options they offer.

  17. Great post. So nice to see something different.
I have one TB shirt. I felt in when I saw it hanging on a rack at a Dillard’s when I was on vacation. It felt so nice I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I had to order it once I got home. They have nice items that are classic.

You look nice in all the things you showed us today.

  18. Wyona Mitchell says:

You look great and with a healthy glow! Love the boyfriend jeans whole outfit!
Thanks for the new try-on venue!

  19. I have three of the linen jean jackets in both of my homes. It is a wardrobe staple! I throw them on over dresses, pants and jeans, and they are my constant travel companions. Sometimes I mind when linen gets wrinkled, but for some reason it doesn’t bother me in these jackets. As you said about popular pieces, there are lots of knock offs of these jackets around, but I love the originals and they are not terribly pricey. I highly recommend them!

    1. I own a knock off and it’s not nearly as nice.

Living in Florida, Tommy Bahama is one of my favorite places to shop. I have the linen jean jacket in 4 colors.
