The Keys to Looking Good Every Day

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve had my fair share of fashion disasters over the years…some as recently as last month. Rather than beat myself up, I recognize that style is a journey, and it’s never too late to refine my approach to dressing. This got me thinking that looking good and feeling stylish every day doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Let’s explore a few practical tips to help you look better in everything you wear, which will boost your confidence and allow your unique personality to shine through your style choices.

Embrace Your Body Shape

One of the most important steps for looking better is understanding and embracing your body shape. Our bodies naturally change as we age, and what worked for us in our 30s might not be the most flattering choice now. Each body shape has its unique beauty, and the key is to highlight your best features. Instead of trying to squeeze into clothes that don’t suit your shape, look for pieces that complement your natural curves.

Get the Proper Fit

When clothes fit well, they skim your body in all the right places, which creates a silhouette that’s flattering and comfortable. Ill-fitting clothes can make even the most expensive garments look cheap, so don’t be afraid to try on different sizes to get the best fit. Remember that the number on the tag is just that, a number. It does not define you, and they vary by manufacturer. If the tag bothers you, cut it out! What matters is how the garment fits and feels on your body.

Few of us are built like a “fit model”, so invest in alterations to ensure you have the best fit. Here are some things to watch out for:

  • Bust gaping is not OK at any time.
  • Waistlines should lay flat without excess bunching or tightness.
  • Hip seams should lay flat and smooth.
  • Clothes that ride up are likely too small.

Choose Flattering Colors

JACKET / SLEEVELESS BLOUSE / SIMILAR BAG

This is a big topic of primary importance to some women. Other women just want to wear the colors they like without restriction. No matter your stand on the topic of personal color analysis, think of colors in terms of how they make you feel and look, and don’t underestimate the power of neutrals. Versatile neutrals are excellent for creating a sleek, put-together look and also serve as the perfect canvas for pops of color. Colors can also affect our mood, so choose colors that elevate your mood.

Accessorize Intentionally

LAVENDER SWEATER TEE / BARLEY BOOT JEANS / HOOP EARRINGS / SIMILAR SCARF / SIMILAR SWEATER COAT

I think of accessories as the unsung heroes in your wardrobe. They have the power to transform a simple outfit into something special and are a fantastic way to express your personality. Whether you are a minimalist or a maximalist, a well-placed accessory makes all the difference between simply wearing clothes and styling an outfit.

  • When it comes to jewelry, don’t be afraid to mix metals, and don’t save your best things for later. Wear your favorite things regularly.
  • Scarves are a great way to add color, pattern, and texture to your outfit. They’re also a great way to disguise areas you might feel self-conscious about, like your neck or upper arms.
  • Handbags are an extension of your outfit, and you should own the best quality you can afford. Choose a size in proportion to your body that works for your lifestyle.

Magic of Adding Layers

Layering adds depth, interest, and practicality to your outfits while helping you create a more polished and put-together look. Well-placed layers can also be incredibly flattering and allow you to strategically cover areas you might feel self-conscious about while highlighting your best features.

For instance, a column of color worn under an open cardigan can create long, vertical lines that elongate your silhouette and help you appear taller. Wearing a shorter jacket, cardigan, or vest over a longer tunic-type top gives waist definition without tucking or belting anything.

Importance of Undergarments

Investing in good quality, well-fitting undergarments is one of the best things you can do to improve your appearance. Our bodies change over time, so get a professional bra fitting to ensure you’re still wearing the right size. A properly fitting bra can improve your posture, make your clothes fit better, and even make you look slimmer. Seamless underwear that won’t show under your clothes is also mandatory.

And don’t forget about shapewear! Whether you want to smooth out your silhouette or just want a little extra support in your everyday wear, there’s a comfortable shapewear solution for you. The goal isn’t to change your body; it’s to create a smooth foundation for your clothes to lay on. When your undergarments fit well and do their job, you’ll feel more confident and comfortable in everything you wear.

Dress For Your Lifestyle

How many of us buy clothes for a lifestyle we don’t have? The truth is that most of us lead a pretty casual lifestyle. If you’re spending most of your time at home gardening, golfing, spending time with grandchildren, or running errands, you probably don’t need a closet full of dressy clothes. For a casual lifestyle, invest in high-quality basics that you can mix and match. A good pair of dark wash jeans, comfortable yet stylish sneakers, and a selection of well-fitted tops can form the foundation of countless outfits. Add in some cardigans, lightweight jackets, and a few dressier pieces for special occasions.

Grooming And Self Care

Looking your best isn’t just about the clothes you wear, it’s also about how you care for yourself. Good grooming goes a long way to help you look and feel your best.

  • Develop a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Don’t forget to extend your skincare to your neck and hands!
  • Regular trims and a flattering hairstyle can take years off your appearance.
  • Less makeup is often better as we age. Focus on enhancing your natural beauty with a light touch.
  • Well-groomed nails (whether natural or with a subtle polish) add an elevated look to any outfit.
  • Good posture can instantly make you look taller, slimmer, and more confident. Practice standing and sitting up straight.
  • Drinking plenty of water is great for your skin, hair, and overall health.

A good night’s sleep goes a long way to help you look and feel your best.

Embrace Your Personal Style

The most important thing is to stay true to yourself and your personal style. Fashion is a form of self-expression that shows the world who you are without saying a word. Don’t be afraid to experiment, try new things, and break the “rules” if it feels right to you.

Style evolves over time, so allow it to grow and change with you. Keep what you love, let go of what no longer serves you, and always be open to discovering new aspects of your personal style. The goal isn’t to look like anyone else or to follow every trend. The goal is to look and feel like the best version of yourself. When you achieve that, you’ll naturally look better in everything you wear.

  1. Would you mind sharing how you tied that gorgeous burgundy and navy scarf, Jennifer? It looks fantastic! I have several long scarves and I struggle to tie them so they stay in place and look classy. You nailed it!

  2. I ‘m not sure why. I think I have tried so many styles of shapewear, and haven’t found any that I consider comfortable enough to wear on a daily basis. what am I missing?

    1. I usually go up a size so they’re not too tight. I just want them to smooth things out.

  3. I can’t open the links! Love the first jacket!

    1. I see you’re in Canada but the links should open. Perhaps try a different browser?

  4. Thank you for today’s suggestions. It is difficult to change styling when your body changes with age. My hourglass figure is almost a rectangle now. Waistlines are hard to have to adapt to at this age. At almost 80, I still like to look put together everyday. You look very slim in your grey jeans and lady jacket. Fall weather has finally come to southern Colorado. I’m wearing my jeans jacket or a cardigan as lady jackets are way too dressy for our small western town. We also have to adapt to the demographic where each of us live.

  5. Because of your previous advice to get a professional bra fitting, I did it last week. I was sure I was a 36B. NOT! I am a 32 D! I cannot believe how much better I look in these great and well-fitting bras (without underwires). They are also much more comfortable. I spent a bit on 2 bras, but it sure feels like a good investment. One more piece of advice given to me by a friend which is perhaps more in the line of keeping our ego going: you don’t have to keep a picture of yourself you don’t like. If it teaches you something about posture or pose, learn and then give it the toss (or edit yourself out of the group! Thank you for your great blog.

    1. I’m really happy to hear that helped

  6. Yes, you could show us how to take an outfit from frumpy to fab with before and after pics? We’ve all been there and wondered how to do it. At least once a week I actually google how to I style a….(vest, tie dye top, poncho, leopard print, etc.) to look modern? We’ve all got those pieces in our closets and need ideas for how to wear them! Thanks!

    1. I’ll work on some ideas for the blog!

I love the Lavender and Gray outfit on you. You’ve inspired me to try new styles and colors.
Love the teardrop earrings, but their price is out of my budget. Will take a look for a substitute….

  8. Hi Jennifer, I follow your blog closely because your tips for your body help me with my short, broad shouldered body. I love seeing jackets and coat that de-emphasize shoulders. I love the “column of color.
    Thank you! Blessed days, everyone!!!

  9. I discovered a good seamstress in my neighborhood. She hemmed my new pants, fixed the waist on my jeans as they kept falling down, and she shortened the sleeves on my sweater. Now I don’t feel sloppy and I feel so much better. Well fitting clothes make a huge difference.

    1. Awesome! I good seamstress is priceless!

  10. Thank you, Jennifer! Really enjoyed this post this morning!

  11. That lady jacket looks fabulous on you! The colors are perfect and I am not even a lady jacket fan! Love it with your hair! Bravo!

Jennifer, I didn’t see a description or source to find the longer, multicolored, fringed jacket you have on in this blog. Where did you find it?

  13. A perfect post today, Jennifer! I love and agree with every one of your style tips. Once upon a time I had an hourglass shape but approaching 70, I am now more of an apple and struggling to change my approach to what looks good and put together. I really appreciate your insight.

    1. My shape is really changing too! I’m half you liked this

  14. I love all your outfits today. My style exactly.

Absolutely love your advice this morning, THANK YOU

    1. My pleasure. I needed the reminder too!

  16. Thanks Jennifer,
Love that Nic & Zoe jacket. I think we all have, what we believe to be fashion disasters. Would you consider doing a post showing us what outfit that you’ve made to be a fashion disaster, and why ?
    Thanks

    1. I used to do posts like that. I try not to photograph my bad ones because the pictures end up on sites advertising “don’t wear this!” Lol I’ll see what I can come up with as an alternative.

      1. Maybe do a post on your less favorite outfits and follow each photo with one that tweaked and improved the overall look?
Thanks for your hard work to keep us reading!

      2. That’s a good idea

  17. Hello Jennifer,
I love your great tips. They make so much sense. It can be a learning curve as we age, our lifestyle changes with retirement and then our body shape can change as well.
One thing that I struggle with as regards to jewelry and mixing metals – do you think silver and gold can be worn together? I have tried this and have felt that perhaps it wasn’t quite right. Maybe because it felt different to my normal choices.
Thanks for all you do and your great blog.

    1. Yes!! They look great together. I have several pieces that have both metals together. Don’t wear silver earrings with everything else gold. You need a similar amount of each metal in your outfit. Gold and silver necklace stacked with silver earrings is more pleasing to the eye.
