Many Shades of Gray
Happy Tuesday, ladies. I have another look at charcoal gray today because it’s such a great alternative to wearing black. Charcoal is softer on the complexion, available in warm and cool tones, and just as versatile as black…maybe even more so. Today’s look is a tonal gray outfit with low contrast, eco-conscious knit shoes, and an amazing coat.

This unlined coat is a cashmere blend in the most gorgeous charcoal gray. It’s Nordstoms’s Signature brand which is a cut above all their other house brands and quickly winning my heart. Budget-friendly option here.

It’s a wool blend with only 10% cashmere but so soft, it feels like it’s all cashmere. The two-tone version here is super popular and on sale. This coat’s unstructured shape easily pulls in with the belt because it’s so soft and drapey. You could remove the belt, but I like it tied in the back when the coat hangs open.

I’m wearing it over gray ankle jeans by Wit & Wisdom. I love the fit of these jeans. They’re very stretchy and a true high rise which you know I love for muffin top control. They’re available in 0 petite to 14W. I am wearing a 6 regular and they run true to size.

I paired them with this subtly embellished mock neck sweater in grey heather. It’s made from a sustainable fiber in three colors, sizes 0-3 – 16W. Because it’s slim-fitting, I decided on the medium and I’m happy with the size. It has a subtle sprinkling of stones across the front and sleeves to give it a festive look.
This gray cashmere sweater and this V-neck cashmere are both on sale and would be gorgeous with this outfit. The charcoal gray cashmere crewneck has my name all over it and is also marked down. Nordstrom cashmere is a great value to begin with, but on sale, they’re amazing!

Over the top sparkle is hard to wear for daytime, but this sweater looks great with jeans and would also be fun with this pleated satin midi skirt for a holiday party or going to the Ballet, etc.
My eco-friendly flats are a stretchy knit made from recycled fibers. I have several pairs of Eileen Fisher sandals and one pair of her boots which are all super comfy. The knit upper on these flats means nothing pinches or pushes on sensitive parts of my feet plus these are on sale! Because they’re on sale, I ordered them in this taupe which will be great with paler colors.

If youāre in a cold climate Iād wear socks that matched the color of my pants to lengthen the look of my legs. CA isnāt they cold yet, this time of year:)

Love charcoal as a substitute for black. The charcoal coat appears blue in most of the photos–not sure if it’s a filter or the true color?
Beautiful! I have more charcoal than black now. I have softened all my colors as I get older. Muted colors not dusty but muted. I love the new wooly cashmeres we are getting today. I bought real cashmere beanies for adults this year and a mix for the grandchildren, I like the feel of theirs better. Those knit shoes are searching for my feet. Got to have a pair.

Very nice look — I especially like the wrap coat. I don’t have a local Nordstrom so am unlikely to buy from them as I don’t have a feeling for their petite fit. In a pandemic, I think you go with brands you know, at least I do. A question I have — maybe you know — is why are washing instructions so odd these days? Given its materials, the sweater should be washable, right? Items that used to be machine-dryable are now almost always ‘lay flat to dry’ as well. Another question: why is there so much nylon in clothes this year? It’s really off-putting; I’m not going to spend big $ on non-eco synthetics.
In my experience, brands tell us to dry clean things for liability. In case we have laundry helpers like I do who puts everything in a hot dryer:)
