Weekend Reading 06.20.26

Happy Saturday, ladies. I visited the new EF that just opened near me, and I have to say, I was underwhelmed. The salespeople didn’t seem to know the brand very well, and the inventory was uninspiring. That’s one of the reasons I prefer shopping online…the selection is so much larger.

I don’t think I shared this side-by-side image of the Eileen Fisher Organic Linen Culottes with you, but maybe I did. Honestly, this week has been a rough one, so if I have, just ignore me.

I took this photo at the Vancouver store

I prefer the black ones because they appear narrower, but in fact, they’re the same size. As I seriously considered these, a little voice in my head asked…didn’t you wear these with knee boots when they were called gauchos? What do you think? Are they just cropped trousers?

Reader favorites…what you loved and ordered

  • My favorite travel and everthing pant were super popular this week, and are still on sale. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with these pants. I’m happy so many of you are trying them. I replaced my mushroom and navy pairs because they’ve been on heavy rotation in my wardrobe for years!

  • This gorgeous lightweight wrap/scarf was a best seller again this week. It’s a forever kind of piece that takes no space in a suitcase and easily adds polish to an outfit.

Highlights from the weekend sales:

  • NORDSTROM is having a huge clearance sale…making room for the Anniversary Sale. These Vionic sneakers have been a customer favorite, and they’re marked way down. I love the pretty colors of this Frank & Eileen plaid shirt.I have this Chambray shirt and it’s a steal at less than $40. These Frame high-rise white jeans are a perfectly classic option at a great price. This white swing denim jacket is so chic and is almost sold out. How did I miss it?

  • LAND’S END big sale continues with lots of great pieces using code CAMPUSLIFE. I wish I’d had this pretty dress on my trip to Singapore. This denim dress reminds me so much of an expensive version hanging in my closet. I love the look of this subtle barrel jean in natural. These petite high-rise jeans are selling quickly in 6 washes. Oh, and they also come in regular, tall, and plus. These soft denim straight-leg jeans have a touch of the prettiest embroidery.

  • CHICO’S has a special sale 2 days only, 50% off 1,000s of styles and 25% off a sneak peak of their newest collection and an extra $20 off when you spend $100. These Pintuck High-Cuff Crop Jeans are so fun, and the front seam is very slimming. This Embellished Linen Popover dress has been a best seller with AWSL readers. These Brigitte Slim shorts are a customer favorite every year and are very flattering. And if you haven’t tried one of their No-Iron Linen Shirts, now’s the time! I have several, and they’re terrific. In case you didn’t know, their jewelry collection has some of the most unique and creative pieces …also on sale.
I seldom wear shorts, but I love my navy ones.

In case you missed it:

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear something that makes you feel confident and happy.

  1. I have always like Chicos jewelry.

  2. Christine Yang says:

I love the green shirt you are wearing! Where can I find that?

  3. Laura Heitz says:

Was there a full moon this week? I left a bag at the checkout at Target. I felt off the entire week!

    1. I’m not sure but glad I’m not alone. Sorry you lost your bag.

  4. Yes, I remember the gauchos with boots! Those crops very definitely are those! Thank-you for all of the sale tips. My go-to for looking them over. I hope this week is much better for you, enjoy your weekend!
    Trish

  5. Not sure if you are aware but several items that you mentioned (by “these….” Or “this”) in Nordstrom, Land’s End and Chico’s sales are not highlighted in blue to take us to the item. So sorry to add to your hard week.

    1. I was not aware, thank you for letting me know. I’m ready for a new week 😉

  6. No to culottes or Groucho’s then and now. I’m 5’1” tall, normal weight and look ridiculous in those pants. You carry them better than I do but you look better in a dress or skirt or slim Bermuda shorts. It is up to each of us to decide what we like.

  7. Joy Isbell says:

I’ve noticed that older women (I’m 75) can’t pull off that much bare leg, just not young legs anymore. I think the black pants look good on you, but would look lots better in fall with boots.

  8. I think the black pants with the checked top are cute. I like black/white in the Summer. If they were my pants/shorts I’d hem them up to just under the knee. I’m all about a “shapely” calf — ha, ha.
I like EF tops, sweaters and dresses, but their bottoms don’t work for me.

    1. That would be a much better length on me

  9. Sheila Sanders says:

The “gauchos “ are cute on you however I won’t be wearing them. You are the voice of reason.

  10. Hi Jennifer, yes I noticed the earlier email didn’t include the actual post – glad you came back with it!
I have to say that those ‘culottes’ just look like cropped wide-legged trousers. To me, culottes are a ‘divided skirt’, ie look like a skirt but sewn so that your legs go in like they were trousers. In the 90s I had a favourite pair of culottes – they looked like an A-line skirt with a pleat in the middle, very comfortable to wear. It kind of annoys me when the term is used (to my mind) wrongly!

    1. Brands just call things whatever they like.

  11. Marlene D says:

I don’t find those pants attractive or worth the expense in my wardrobe, whatever you call them. At 5’6″ I would just look like a fashion victim who ought to know better.

Heck, I look better in my hiking pants that have roll-up snap cuffs than in these.

I would be better off with a skirt to beat the heat.

  12. Leigh Miller says:

I remember having gauchos in the 70’s and loved them – in my memory they were a little wider than the culottes you have on – almost skirt like – but that could be a faulty memory! You look great in them and it makes me want a pair!!

  13. Susan Rosenberg says:

Echo the comments about “gaucho” culottes not being flattering on short women and also too much of fad for lasting wear. But the shade of green top looks great with your coloring.

  14. Sandra Harmon says:

Definitely still gauchos. They look so good with boots. That shade of green with the ivory gauchos is super flattering on you. Sandie

  15. Elizabeth L says:

Jennifer, sorry you’ve had what sounds like a rough week. Here’s to a better week ahead!

As for the culottes- no thanks. I wore something similar about 50+ years ago and now know better at age 73! I think any pant that cuts off above the ankle is unflattering to most women of a certain age.

  16. Cropped trousers are a little longer and not as voluminous as those. I would say they are culottes. I can’t say I’m a fan.

  17. Lynnefred says:

I don’t care for the wide legged short pants on short gals. I feel the proportion will never be right. The frump factor is high. Extra fabric for us shorties is just too difficult to make look right. There are so many more complimentary styles to choose. Even capris look better.

  18. Please consider a post dedicated to explaining cropped pants, gauchos, culottes, ankle pants, bermuda shorts, etc. It’s gotten to the point where these terms are a confusing jumble of words that are pretty meaningless — and I think it’s because the answer is, the style is “whatever the manufacturer wants to call it.” Same with trouser jeans, wide leg jeans, straight leg jeans, mom jeans, boyfriend jeans, girlfriend jeans, high-waisted jeans, loose fit jeans, and so on. I shop online so I can buys Talls, and basically I can plan on buying and returning multiple pairs to find one that works.

    1. It is the wild, wild, west out there and the names they use are all over the place.

  19. Rachel Garron says:

Thigh Society anti chafing shorts are the best undies I have found! I went with sheer for short, skirts and even pants. Now time to clear out all the unsuccessful underwear experiments

    1. I wear mine under pants too.

  20. Hi Jennifer
I’m not a fan of the ‘new’ wide-leg culottes-especially on us over 60, 5’4 or under, and normal, not skinny gals. There’s too much going on. The wide leg emphasizes hips, the legs hang down below, the shorter hem cuts up the line. Sorry.
And as much as I love linen, the minute you sit down you have wrinkles and another set of vertical lines going on. It does feel great in the summer tho.
    Hedi.
