Weekend Reading 8.15.26
Happy weekend. I’m still up in bear country, hoping for a glimpse of the rare Spirit Bear. I thought I’d share a peek into our rental condo in Vancouver.
We hunted for a condo with a gas fireplace, but those are few and far between here, so we compromised. We rented the nicest place we could afford in a lovely location with a view of the water, then bought this little electric fireplace.
Cheesy perhaps, but atmosphere is ridiculously important to me, and this gives the room exactly what it was missing. It throws off a bit of warmth, but the real reason I love it is the soft glow. On a gray, nasty day, it makes the whole room feel instantly cozier.

- My new white shirt from Lands’ End. Funny story: I wore it into a pricey boutique where they carried a lot of Frank & Eileen last week, and the salesperson said, “I love your Frank & Eileen shirt!”
- This Lands’ End high-neck UPF 50 modest swimsuit was very popular this week, which was unusual because I don’t remember linking to it.
- This Talbots Leopard Jacket was a massive bestseller this week! Clearly, you ladies love Talbots.

- My Frank & Eileen Galway Jeans were also super popular this week. I have them in both white and a pale blue wash and love them! They close with a large hook and eye, instead of a hard button.

Tks for showing us the condo. Vancouver, like many cities, is banning gas fireplaces in new builds because of their environmental (fossil fuels) impact – given the horrendous fires in the US and Canada this summer, it’s too bad but that’s our new reality. We live in a house that has a double-sided gas fireplace (15 years old) so we are very spoiled and use it a lot in the rainy winters.
In our new house we couldn’t have a gas fireplace. So we bought an electric fireplace which has a mantle. We had a built in unit built around the fireplace. It looks great, and we love it. It does give off some heat.
They’re a pretty cool alternative.

I have to applaud you on your electric fireplace. When I moved into my current apartment several years ago I missed the built in gas fireplace I’d had in my last apartment. I set about researching portable fireplaces and mantles. One day I was checking out the classified ads and noticed a used one for sale. It’s a beautiful dark hardwood and it has wheels and a remote control and it now sits in my living room. I am ecstatic every time I use it. I can even roll it out to my patio and drink my coffee on a cold day in front of it. One a wonderful appliance.
I love the sound of yours Nancy. The real hardwood is fabulous.
