10 Tips to Elevate Your Everyday Style Over 60
For women over 60, fashion becomes less about following the trends and more about embracing our individuality. Looking and feeling stylish every day doesnāt require a complete wardrobe overhaul. Instead, itās about making thoughtful choices and simple adjustments that celebrate who we are today. Today, I’m sharing 10 easy tips to elevate your everyday style over 60 that I’ve been using when shopping for new pieces and putting together outfits for several decades. These practical strategies and tips are designed to effortlessly enhance and elevate your personal style to help you feel and look your best every single day.
10 Tips to Elevate Your Everyday Style Over 60
1. Embrace the Power of Wardrobe Essentials
Every woman’s wardrobe should include at least a few timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of stylish outfits. These essentials form the foundation of your wardrobe and are pieces youāll reach for year after year because theyāre always in style. The best part? They can be found at all price points. You can read more about wardrobe essentials here and here.

Below is a list of some of the most common wardrobe essentials to have in your closet for any season:
- Little Black Dress (LBD): A versatile piece that can be dressed up or down.
- Classic White Shirt: Perfect for both professional and casual settings.
- Tailored Blazer: Adds sophistication to any outfit.
- Dark Wash Jeans: A flattering and versatile option for various occasions.
- Neutral-Colored Sweater: Great for layering and adding warmth.
2. Invest in Quality Over Quantity
When it comes to fashion, I believe that quality trumps quantity. Investing in high-quality pieces not only ensures they last longer but also elevates your overall look. High-quality fabrics, well-constructed garments, and timeless designs are key to creating a sophisticated and stylish wardrobe.

Iāve always been an advocate for investment dressing. I love to add fun, on-trend items to keep my look current, but the backbone of my wardrobe is made up of items Iāve invested in for the long haul. An investment purchase is an item that you know will serve you long-term. It goes with most items in your wardrobe, and you feel confident and fabulous when you wear it. Learn more about how to shop for investment pieces in this post.
Tips for Investing in Quality
- Check Fabric Composition: Natural fibers like cotton, silk, and wool often look more luxurious and last longer than synthetic alternatives.
- Examine Stitching: Well-made garments have clean, even stitching with no loose threads.
- Consider Cost Per Wear: Invest in pieces that you will wear frequently and can be styled in multiple ways.
3. Accessorize with Intention

Accessories are a powerful tool in elevating your everyday style and are the one category in my wardrobe that always survives my closet cleanouts and wardrobe editing. Theyāre also the easiest way to make a unique statement with our style and allow us to stretch our wardrobe. They can also make the difference between being over or under-dressed.

Keep in mind…accessories go in and out of style. One year, bold jewelry is in, and the next, itās out. The same goes for handbag shapes. The way we choose to add accessories should come down to personal preference, but stay abreast of whatās current so you look up-to-date. Accessories like earrings and scarves draw attention to your face, so have fun with these. Unique bracelets or brooches update your outfits with little financial investment. Here is where you can play with trends and get lots of bang for your buck.
Essential Accessories for Every Woman

- Statement Jewelry: A necklace or a pair of earrings can make a significant impact.
- Scarves: Add color, texture, and warmth to your outfits.
- Handbags: A quality handbag can be both functional and fashionable.
- Belts: Define your waist and add structure to your look.
- Sunglasses: Protect your eyes and add a touch of glamour.
4. Master the Art of Layering
Layering is an excellent way to add depth and interest to your outfits. I don’t simply mean adding a third layer for cold weather but using layers to create an ensemble allows you to play with different textures, colors, and patterns, making your look more dynamic and stylish.

You can see in these two photos how I used the same linen tank as a simple base and transformed it into two very different outfits by layering pieces with various textures, proportions, and colors.
Layering Tips
- Start with Basics: Begin with a simple base, such as a fitted tee or tank top.
- Add Interest: Incorporate a variety of textures, like knit sweaters, denim jackets, or silk scarves.
- Play with Lengths: Experiment with different lengths, such as a long cardigan over a shorter top.
- Balance Proportions: Pair a loose top with fitted bottoms or vice versa to maintain balance.
5. Embrace Color and Patterns
While neutrals are versatile and timeless, don’t be afraid to incorporate color and patterns into your wardrobe. They can add excitement and individuality to your style. I’m definitely trying to do more of this myself.

I love this new Aegean color from Eileen Fisher. Itās one of my best colors because I have flecks of it in my eyes. Itās also one of those colors most people look good in.

This is the first red item I’ve added to my wardrobe…for as long as I can remember. I surprise myself by reaching for it often because it feels fun.
How to Incorporate Color and Patterns
- Start Small: If you’re new to bold colors, start with accessories or small clothing items.
- Mix and Match: Pair a patterned piece with a solid color to keep the look balanced.
- Consider Your Skin Tone: Choose colors that complement your complexion to enhance your natural beauty.
- Experiment with Prints: Floral, animal print and geometric patterns can all add a fun element to your outfits.
6. Find Your Personal Style

Elevating your everyday style is not just about following trends; it’s about finding what works for you and expressing your individuality. Take the time to discover your personal style and build a wardrobe that reflects it. You can read my post here about the three-word method to find your personal style.

Steps to Discover Your Personal Style
- Inspiration: Look for inspiration in fashion magazines, blogs, and social media.
- Experiment: Try different styles and see what makes you feel confident and comfortable.
- Create a Mood Board: Collect images of outfits and pieces you love to identify common themes.
- Evaluate Your Wardrobe: Assess your current wardrobe and identify pieces that you love and wear often.
7. Stay Updated with Fashion Trends
While it’s important to have a timeless wardrobe, keeping up with current fashion trends can help you stay stylish and modern. Incorporate a few trendy pieces into your wardrobe to keep your look fresh.

I’m a big advocate of wearing what you love, and it’s okay to completely forego a trend. For example, I know many of my readers aren’t a fan of the wide-leg pants craze. Weāre old enough to wear what we love and make the call about what we feel confident wearing. You can read more about my thoughts on this here and here.
How to Incorporate Trends
- Invest in Versatile Trends: Choose trends that can be styled in multiple ways.
- Mix with Classics: Pair trendy items with classic pieces to create a balanced look.
- Prioritize Comfort: Ensure that the trendy pieces you choose are comfortable and fit well into your lifestyle.
8. Pay Attention to Fit and Tailoring
The fit of your clothes can make a significant difference in how they look on you. Well-fitted garments enhance your shape and look more polished.

Tips for Perfect Fit
- Know Your Measurements: Have your measurements taken professionally to find the correct sizes.
- Alterations: Don’t hesitate to take garments to a tailor for adjustments.
- Choose Flattering Silhouettes: Select styles that complement your body shape.
9. Maintain Your Wardrobe

Taking good care of your clothes ensures they remain in excellent condition, prolonging their lifespan and keeping you looking stylish. Make sure you are using the right detergent for the fabric and removing any pilling and loose threads.
Wardrobe Maintenance Tips
- Follow Care Labels: Adhere to washing and drying instructions to prevent damage.
- Regularly Declutter: Remove items that are worn out or no longer fit your style. Here are my tips for decluttering your wardrobe.
- Organize: Keep your wardrobe organized so you can easily find and style your outfits.
10. Confidence is Key

The most important aspect of elevating your everyday style is confidence. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. Embrace your unique style and wear your outfits with pride.
Building Confidence in Your Style
- Dress for Yourself: Wear what makes you happy and comfortable.
- Positive Self-Talk: Focus on the aspects of your appearance that you love.
- Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try new things and make mistakes ā fashion is about self-expression.
Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

Hi. Really enjoyed this entire article and agree with almost all the style comments from basic pieces to accessories. I really enjoy throwing in scarves some of the time, especially for a cute splash when I’m wearing denim or chambray. Talbots scarves are always my favorites. One thing I do have a completely different opinion on though is how often you wear sandals. I guess I just don’t like them, especially with multiple straps or in metallics. I think they detract from every outfit. An ankle strap and one across the toes looks so much more attractive if you must wear sandals. My favorite flats are from Rothy’s. So much more flattering in the “Point” or square toe than sandals, except for simple flip-flops — like those from LLBean.Heels> Again, plain pumps, low cut in front and pointed toes!
A great refresher course today! Accessories are so important in making the outfit more casual or dressy.
They are the magic makers
A great post! Thank you!
I just got caught up with this week’s posts. You look fab in all the outfits you shared with us. Thank you for the wonderful advice, too. I have the bookmarked to share with my friends and family members who have been complementing me on how I look since I found AWSL and taking your wardrobe advice regarding layering and accessorizing (and amortizing quality over quantity). I am currently looking at getting a cashmere sweater from NAADAM to add to my fall/winter wardrobe. I highly recommend this small online company. They use sustainable methods and work directly with the Mongolian herders instead of getting their fiber from the big traditional distributors, allowing the herders to be paid more and treated more ethically. They also have lots of colors to suit anyone’s taste. The quality is superb. I bought a red crew neck red sweater several years ago from them and it is still looks great and feels as soft as when I first opened the package. I hope you have a great weekend!
Thank you for letting me know about them. The abundance of cashmere being produced is very, very hard on the animals welfare.
I always wonder what a more boho version of āthe essentialsā would be. I donāt like or wear any of these things except the jeans, maybe a sweater. Most bloggers offer some version of classic style it seems.
I have some ideas for that very subject coming up.
This was a great post, even for us under 60 (not by much) I laughed at your check the stitching comment. My daughter is 17 and whenever she buys clothes the first thing she does is look at the inside of the garment re the stitching and fabric composition. If stitching isnāt up to her high standards it remains on the rack (Iāll add she makes her own clothes and is looking at a career in fashion design) And you look wonderful in every photo, as one person noted your smile is beautiful.
I used to sew all my own clothes so I totally understand your daughter! Thank you š
Your “essentials” list is pretty standard, and not me. I never wear a Little Black Dress. I have never met a white shirt I couldn’t permanently stain in the first week. I look weird in tailored blazers (short waist, large bust), and I almost never wear jeans outside my own home. I do have a nice neutral sweater, though. I wear pretty much EF staples and dress them up with layers (tending boho.) I wear all my jewelry, dainty and bold, and I carry memorable hand bags from my collection. Now that I’m officially ancient, I dress to please myself, and I try to keep it just this side of eccentric. I feel kind of sorry for women who agonize over what their “style” is and whether something makes them look “matronly.” Life is too short, ang it’s getting shorter by the day.
It’s all personal preferfence, Kay. Some women are inspired by understanding their style. You seem to understand yours!
Wonderful and very beneficial tips Jennifer and looking very chic! (Favourites though are Photos #10 (Sandwich styling) and #11 (Quiet Luxury dressing) under the title #6.) As to myself; I am still editing my summer closet (save -alter if needed / donate – to whom) that also involves a different tactic in re-organizing it, with what are called ‘clothes hanger connector hooks’ (an Amazon find) that ‘hopefully’ will make styling pieces together a little easier. i.e.: Top ‘n bottom but additional pieces that go with it OR group specific staples in various styles like blue jeans, all stacked from the same hanger. Now with all that said; it remains to be seen if my strategy works … lol! -Brenda-
Keep me posted, Brenda. It sounds like a great tactic!
Nearly everything you wear could be a huge mood board! Because my budget is clearly much less than yours I keep my eyes open for similar pieces. So far Iām doing quite well with Chicos jeans, I love the wider high rise jeans. They are so comfortable and look good on me with my short jeans jackets in white and denim blue. I also have good luck with Liz Claiborne clothing at JCP. I buy sale tees from Landsend. Sadly, I no longer can afford LL Bean. I saved up and bought one linen outfit in navy from Quince. I also found a thin linen blend long cardigan from Nordstrom Rack. It is white and you wore it in a try on. I canāt wear cashmere or wool so it is a lovely third layer. You have given me so much with your choices as we have similar coloring and I am 3 1/2 inches shorter than you and only about 4 lbs. less. My blue eyes also have that Atlantic blue in them! Iām quite a bit older at 79 but like you, I like to feel confident and comfortable in what I wear every day. Thank you for all that you do on your blog.

Thanks for being here and sharing with us, Sydney!
Wonderful post with great ideas, and you look fantastic in all the outfits! Thank you, as always, for your inspiring tips.
Thank you for this post! I love these outfits, but the info you give is like a Master Class!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Joan
One thing you didnāt explicitly mention, but it shows up in every photo you posted with this blog. About 35 years ago I read a piece of advice for looking more āfinishedā: Add a third item. A vest, scarf, belt, hat, statement jewelry near your face (necklace, brooch, earrings). I suppose really outstanding shoes or handbag also suffice. Something noticeable.
It’s the perfect way to polish your outfits.
What an excellent post – this guide is like a class or a book on how to plan your wardrobe. Have you ever thought about offering something like this expanded as an online class?
I have not but it’s a great idea!
This is a great article and I love the picture. I have no idea what my personal style is, although I’d say it’s kind of tailored and not boho, but even then I love my Lilly Pulitzer things which I guess classify as Boho. Just bought my first Jenny Kayne cashmere at the sale in a state without sales tax on clothing. But now I think I need to wait for the next sale to buy it in a true neutral like you are wearing above.
I typically buy investment pieces in neutrals for longevity. Her beige and soft white are fabulous!
These steps are great reminders. As I get older I feel it’s even more important to look put together and pay attention to details. I collect outfits I like on Pinterest. Along with hair styles and home decor. Something fun to do!
I agree, it is fun and inspiring
One of your best accessories is your great smile! More people should try that!
I agree a smile is the best accessory š Thanks. I have tons of dental challenges but I take meticuous care of the ones I have.
I wanted to make a specific comment about glasses. Glasses are hard and it is difficult to to know what looks best on oneself. They also an investment although the prices seem to be coming down a bit. However, the wrong glasses can defeat a whole outfit and so deserve a significant amount care and attention.
I totally agree and it’s a challenge to find interesting ones.
Jennifer…a question for you…what do you think of the idea of matching a denim jacket to a jean in the same fabric for a sort of ‘pant suit’ situation. Because I am 5’2″, I tend to like the same fabric top to bottom for elongating the body. Am I on the right track with denims?
There is no wrong way to wear double denim in my book. I’ve worn them in contrasting washes and when they almost match! Just be sure that if they differ it’s enough to be obvious.
All good reminders Jennifer, and you look lovely in all of these outfits! Thank tou
Thank you, Deanne
Many of your ideas are great and make perfect sense to me, however one gave me pause…What is a mood board and how do you create one?
Thanks for always helping us be the best we can be!
Itās a collection of images showing outfits and styles you like. You can cut photos out of magazines or save digital images in Pinterest or on a folder on your computer.
