How to Look Expensive Without Breaking The Bank
1. Quality Over Quantity, Every Time
Shopping for trendy pieces may be fun, but since they need to be retired after only a few seasons, it’s much smarter (and more economical) to invest in timeless, classic items. The secret is to invest in high-quality fabrics, well-tailored pieces, and minimalistic accessories that elevate your look without being flashy. Investment dressing will also save you time and money in the long run and give your wardrobe a solid base to build upon.

When I refer to investment pieces, I’m talking about things like a cozy cashmere sweater, a structured leather bag, or a great pair of well-made shoes. These items might cost a bit more upfront, but you’ll be able to wear them year after year because they never go out of style.
If you’re shopping for investment pieces on a budget, wait for sales or save up for that special item. Remember, the cost-per-wear of a high-quality piece often turns out lower than a cheap, quickly discarded item. Thrift and consignment stores can be goldmines for high-quality, lightly used pieces at a fraction of their original cost.

2. Go Monochromatic

One of my go-to tricks is wearing a single-color head-to-toe. They needn’t match exactly because you get the same effect with an outfit of similar tones. There’s something about a monochromatic look that feels super chic and effortlessly elegant. Plus, it’s one of my favorite tricks for looking taller and slimmer.
Classic neutrals like black, white, navy, camel, and grey are usually a safe bet, but you get the same effect from any color. To add some depth, I like to mix up different textures – like pairing a silk blouse with a wool skirt. It’s a simple trick, but it’s an easy way to make your outfit look far more expensive than it actually is.
3. Add Classic Accessories

Accessories can really make a big impact on your overall look. Try to choose timeless, well-made pieces, like silk scarves, stylish belts, or a quality handbag. Not only are these pieces always in style, but they add a touch of luxury to any outfit.
When it comes to jewelry, a little goes a long way. This means avoiding anything that looks too flashy or cheaply made. Bold, statement pieces can be very elegant when worn with simply shaped garments in solid colors, which make the accessory the star of your outfit. You can also lean towards classic, versatile pieces like a delicate bracelet, pendant necklace, or stud earrings. These simple additions can elevate your look without overpowering your entire outfit.
4. Skip the Logos

I like a designer bag just as much as the next woman, but I also know that if you want to look sophisticated, you should skip the big logos on your handbags. Quality and craftsmanship speak for themselves, so a structured leather bag in neutral tones like black, taupe, beige, or deep brown will add an instant luxurious touch. Go for simple designs with minimal logos or hardware.
5. Buy Classic and Timeless Basics

Building a wardrobe around classic, timeless pieces is one of the most effective ways to ensure you always look elegant. I’ve spent years curating a wardrobe filled with versatile items like tailored blazers, crisp white shirts, and dark denim jeans. These pieces are the foundation of my style and can be mixed and matched to create countless outfits. You can find my complete list of timeless wardrobe essentials here. I also enjoy mixing classic pieces with a few current trends to keep my look fresh and modern. It’s all about finding the right balance between timeless elegance and contemporary style.
6. Keep Up with Grooming

And last, but most importantly, pay close attention to your grooming. Grooming plays a huge role in achieving an expensive and polished look, especially for those over 60. Hydrated skin, well-maintained hair, and neat nails can make a huge difference.
Taking proper care of your clothes is essential to maintaining an elegant look. Invest in a steamer to ensure your garments are wrinkle-free. Spot treat stains immediately and invest in supportive hangers that won’t allow clothes to become misshapen. Use a sweater shaver to keep pills at bay for your knitwear and snip any loose or hanging threads. Keep footwear polished and well-maintained.
I go into more detail about common grooming mistakes that can age you in this post.
Whether you’re heading to a casual lunch or a formal event, dressing to look expensive is about radiating confidence and grace through your wardrobe. It’s about making thoughtful choices that reflect your personality, investing in quality pieces that stand the test of time, and carrying yourself with confidence.
Do you have any style tips to add to this list?

I guess I’m on another page. All the clothes do look beautiful but I save up for Farm Rio and Johnny Was. I love the color and the prints! They make me feel happier!
They make gorgeous clothes.
Thank you for thinking of us on a limited budget.
Jennifer I love this post. I suppose we all have differing views of elegance but for me, in what I wear, elegance refers to all 5 senses. I can’t wear loud clanking bangle bracelets and feel elegant, or heavy perfume, or revealing fabrics. One thing that never fails to make me feel wonderful is cashmere. It is simple, comforting and beautiful. That is elegance.
I totally agree!
Hi Jennifer,
Fantastic post thank you, I learn so much following you!! I have a much better wardrobe now than ever before by following these guidelines you mentioned. I save money by looking at the items I want and seeing if I can find them on Ebay/Poshmark/Nordstrom Rack even if its out of season or half a year later. I did that recently for both of the designer dresses I wore for both of my children’s weddings. And this year I looked at Nordstrom Rack early to find amazing deals on Eileen Fisher boots which I loved so much I bought in another color on Ebay. When there is something like an investment piece I have signed up for the discount on certain brands with my personal information and then get out of the system if the emails/texting is too much. Quince do amazing cashmere and a good loyalty points system. My daughter gave me a lovely gift token for my birthday and I kept it for 10 months to go towards a Barbour Beadnell jacket from Tuckernuck which is something l have wanted for years and years. I am off to England in two weeks feeling very good with with my hi/low choices. Happy weekend xo
Thank you so much. You’re a smart, savvy shopper! Have a wonderful trip. I know you’ll look chic and stylish.
I got those EF cargo pants in the black crepe and they are the best! Comfortable, fit perfectly and wash like a dream. A good example of buying quality over quantity.
Agreed. They’re great pants.
I love everything you are wearing today, and it’s hard to tell the budget items from some of the pricier ones. I have a question: Where can I find the purse shown in the pic where you are wearing jeans and a black, scoop neck t-shirt under a light gray cardigan. You are seated on a low, stone wall and the purse is next to you. I know I’ve seen that purse in a previous post, but can’t find it now. Thanks!
It’s the Kate Spade bag, which they have in different colors now.
I still have a beautiful scarf from Ireland that my ER boss brought back from a trip there and gave each of us nurses a gift. It must be 30+ years ago now. When I wear it I think of her. She has been gone a long time now. My small jewelry box stores my few pieces both junk and a few real pieces that are timeless. I would add that we need to stand tall even if we are petite. I work on my posture every time I look in the mirror. I hear my mother’s voice telling me to stand or sit straight. It gets harder the older I get. We tend to walk looking down at the ground to avoid tripping and falling. Scan ahead of where you will be walking to avoid falling. Then throw those shoulders back and chin up and walk tall.
You’re so right! I do have to look don’t so I don’t trip and it’s not helping my posture.
There are always a bunch if comments on your blog when I first look at it. Is it because of time differences? I am in the PNW and would like to comment occasionally.
My posts go out at 3 am PT so unless you’re up very early, others may see it before you. You may comment at any time.
Thanks for the post today. The light blue amazon sweater looks so great on you. Good price too. I know you like E Fisher clothes which for my budget are too expensive. I am glad you explained about the EF business model as I never really knew about it. I wonder why all the EF models look depressed?
lol, not sure about the models.
Excellent tips Jennifer! As to myself and focusing on the same subject; my advice is to educate yourself about fabrics and train your eye to recognize what separates their high and low end quality BUT do ‘not’ dismiss that if a garment is that of a polyester blend then it is inferior, as in some cases it is required to add drape/structure to a garment. Also there is the fact that not all cashmeres, linens, wools, cottons, silks etc. are equal so don’t be misled by a label. Last but not least, do not rule out mixing qualities. i.e.: The use of a low sheen polyester or viscose tank top as an underpin, in lieu of a 100% silk one. -Brenda-
I agree Brenda. I do have some lovely polyester items which are incredibly soft.
Really great post! Being small I’ve always tried to dress minimally so as not to look like my clothes are wearing me. I like the monochromatic look. I usually try to wear small pieces of jewelry that looks elegant. I always have trouble with handbags though. I need something on the small side that has enough room.
I prefer smaller bags on me too but then they’re hard to get everything in.
Love the monochromatic tones!
Can I just scream about the Black UK scarves? They have black and gray leopard and NAVY leopard (which I purchased). Wonderful quality, forever closet items for us cool toned gals! Yes leopard is trending this season but it has always been a classic for me – just not in brown.
I agree! I’m thinking of getting the Navy
Great suggestions! I always try to think about cost-per-wear when making purchases–it’s also better for the planet than buying lots of fast fashion! What steamers do you recommend?
I love this Conair one. I’ve been using it for years!
You look fantastic in all of today’s outfits. What size are you wearing in the light blue duster sweater from Amazon? Some of the reviews said it ran small. Tks.
I’m wearing a Small. I read those size reviews too. Unless it’s changed since I got mine last year, which seems unlikely.
For me, shoes and jeans are my biggest challenge. I am willing to pay a premium price for well fitting shoes. It’s just such a bigger deal now than when I was younger. And jeans, they are not fun to try on and when I find that dream fit, I may purchase several pair of the same style.
A young nurse at the clinic gave me an overall glance and said “you look so classy”. I was surprised and quickly said “oh, thank you “. I wasn’t dressed in anything elegant, just my usual three piece style. “It your hair, your glasses, everything together “.
I feel you are so on point about minimizing accessories too. It can quickly go from attractive to distracting.
I love looking classy. That’s a great way to describe it.
Agree with everything you posted today. It really makes a difference if you dress as you suggested. You’ll achieve a classy look and it comes off as effortless!
Another very helpful post, Jennifer.
Upon reflection, my wardrobe reflects these principles:
1. If I only need one, I’ll splurge. Items that fall into this category include a good winter coat, special evening accessories such as a bag and shoes and an all purpose handbag. As the need arises, I reach for these things every year and will for many more. They help me feel prepared and put together. A bonus is that I relive all the special memories with these pieces.
2. Comfort is worth the price.
Underline shoes and pants here. I am loyal to brands that fit my cranky feet and short waisted body. Yes, I cringe when I look at the price tag, but am repaid every time I wear them for hours and on many occasions.
Thanks again for your useful reminders.
I’m with you on the comfort factor. And the memories! I’m still using evening bags I bought 40 years ago.
