Best Pants for Women Over 50
As the temperatures drop and the leaves start to change, it’s the perfect time to update your wardrobe with some stylish and comfortable pants for fall. The good news is that even if you don’t love denim, there are options for you in this post. Here are some of the best fall pants for women over 50, designed to keep you warm and chic during this transitional season.
Best Pants for Women Over 50
Corduroy Pants
Corduroy is a classic fall fabric that adds texture and warmth to your wardrobe. Its soft, velvety feel is perfect for cooler weather, and it comes in a variety of colors to suit any style. I used to think of it as a stiff, uncomfortable option for pants but have discovered many brands offer ones with stretch which makes them super comfy.

I found these stretch flares during my latest Talbots dressy room try-on. The rose color spoke to me, and their fit is fabulous. These have the perfect amount of stretch. Flares are the silhoutte I find myself leaning into the most this fall, and this pair is a lovely shape. They come in 5 great fall colors, including burgundy, walnut, black, and camel (almond buff).

These high-waist corduroy pants by Kut From The Kloth have a slim, tapered leg and come in 6 colors, sizes, reg and some in petite.

I had such great success with these high waist corduroy pants in gray last year, that I bought them in taupe this year. They have a straight leg and 5% spandex making them incredible comfy. These also come in black and run true to EF sizing.
Stretch Twill Pants
Stretch twill pants are the perfect blend of comfort and style for fall and winter. They offer more structure than leggings or jeans but have a soft, flexible feel that makes them great for all-day wear. I love them because they don’t wrinkle easily and hold their shape well, making them a great option for busy days. Pair them with sneakers and a crewneck sweater for a laid-back vibe or slip on a button-down and loafers for something a bit more put-together.

These from J.Jill fit beautifully and have a seam running down the front, which slims the look of the leg. Whether you’re running errands or meeting friends for lunch, these pants can easily transition from casual to polished. They’re a polyester/rayon/spandex woven fabric that feels substantial. Also available in moss heather or black.
Wool-Blend Trousers
For a more polished look, wool-blend trousers are perfect for fall. They’re warm, breathable, and have a refined, sophisticated appearance that works well for more formal settings. Pair wool-blend trousers with a blouse and a tailored blazer for a chic, professional look. For a more casual take, add a simple sweater and ankle boots.

These felted wool jersey trousers are as soft as can be with a wide elastic waistband, slash pockets, and a slightly longer inseam. I’m used to some wool feeling scratchy, but these are not. This color is chalk and they come in black or soft olive, called wren.
Denim Jeans
It’s no secret… I’m a huge fan of a great pair of jeans. A quick glance at my closet shows them in just about every color and wash. As the weather cools, my casual lifestyle has me reaching for a cozy sweater paired with denim most days. While jeans are a year-round essential, I tend to gravitate toward darker washes in the fall. I also swap out my cropped styles for full-length jeans to keep things a bit warmer and more season-appropriate.

These straight-leg jeans have become a staple in my wardrobe. The clean, streamlined silhouette is universally flattering, and the straight cut from hip to hem means they work well for both casual and more dressed-up occasions.

Flare jeans are back, and I couldn’t be happier because they flatter every body silhouette and when styled properly, will help elongate the look of our legs. Some flares look very retro, but I prefer to dabble in this trend in a more subtle way, and these jeans work perfectly.

I’ve been living in wider-leg jeans all summer, so these pull-on denim pants have been a delightful change. They have a contoured waistband that sits just below your natural waist, tons of stretch, and no buttons, pockets, or zippers to bulge, which makes them perfect for layering under your tops. The slim, straight leg is a boderline skinny-leg, so they’ll be great for tucking into knee boots this fall.
Ponte Knit Pants
Ponte knit pants are perfect for those who want the comfort of leggings with the structure of trousers. They’re made from a thick, stretchy fabric that’s both flattering and comfortable for all day wear. I hesitate to say it’s my favorite fabric, but it’s coming close these days.

These ponte slim pants are a fabulous basic. I have several pairs of pants in this ponte fabric that I’ve traveled with for over 10 years. Yes, they’re on the pricier side, but your cost per wear will be pennies based on how often you wear them. They’re a pull-on style with a slim leg and also come in steel color.

These wide-leg Juliet pants are a super comfy ponte knit and intended to be cropped, but are ankle length on me. They also come in black and are selling out fast.
Travel Pant

For casual days, I reach for a pair of wrinkle-resistant, stretch pants, like my favorite Endless pants from Athleta. While they’re amazing for travel (check out my full round-up of travel pants here), they’re equally perfect for everyday wear. I’m not usually one to opt for sweatpants or leggings when I’m out and about, so these offer a comfy and polished alternative when I’m not feeling a jean or trouser.

Another pair of stretch pants I’ve been raving about for years are Eileen Fisher’s washable crepe pants. For over fifteen years, I haven’t packed a suitcase without bringing at least two pairs. I own them in multiple colors, and they look just as great with a pair of sneakers as they do with a ballet flat or sandal.

These washable stretch crepe cargo pants from Eileen Fisher are a fun new shape in one of their best travel-friendly fabrics. A gal in the next changing room had them on in black and they looked fabulous. They have a 2″ flat elastic waistband which feels nice and substantial so you could easily tuck or front tuck thin tops.
Wide-Leg Pants
Wide-leg pants offer a comfortable, relaxed fit that’s perfect for fall. They’re available in a variety of fabrics, from denim to wool, and can be styled for both casual and more formal occasions. They’re one of my favorite styles of pant, and I answer some of your frequently asked questions about how to wear them, along with some of my favorite pairs in this post.

These cotton wide-leg pants fit beautifully. They come in 3 colors, in reg, petite, and tall. These are the regular length and I am standing on tip toes so they’re quite long.
More Pants for Women Over 50 to Consider:
Leather or Faux Leather Pants

For a bold, stylish look, leather or faux leather pants are a great choice for fall and winter. They add texture and a bit of edge to your outfit and can be surprisingly versatile. They’re perfect for a night out or even for dressing up a simple sweater and boots. I found this pair at Talbots or this pair from Chico’s that would be fun to try for this season.
Where to Buy Pants for Women Over 50
When it comes to finding the best fall pants for women over 50, choosing the right brands can make a big difference. Many brands cater specifically to mature women, offering styles that prioritize comfort, fit, and quality. Here are some popular brands that are known for their great selection of pants. If you are looking for more brands to shop for as a mature woman, here is my complete list of retailers.
Eileen Fisher

One of my favorite stores to visit while I’m in Vancouver is Eileen Fisher. I absolutely adore their designs, and since there isn’t a store near me in California, it’s always a treat to stop by. This brand is also a top seller on my blog, and it’s easy to see why: their extensive sizing, commitment to sustainability, and timeless styles resonate with so many. Their pants are some of my favorites—I’ve got several pairs that have truly stood the test of time, both in terms of quality and style. They also carry petite.
Chico’s

Chico’s is a favorite among many mature women for its wide range of sizes and styles, including petites and tall options. Their So Slimming® collection is especially popular, featuring pants that offer tummy control and a flattering fit. Chico’s sizes are named a little different than most brands, but here is a quick guide to make it easier for you: 000(0/XS), 00 (0/2– XS), 0 (4/6 S), 1 (8/10-M), 2 (12/14-L), 3 (16/18-XL) 4 (20/22-XXL).,
NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans)

NYDJ is known for its flattering jeans and pants that feature their exclusive Lift Tuck® Technology, which helps to slim and lift. Their pants are designed to fit and flatter women of all shapes and sizes, offering styles from skinny to wide-leg cuts. You can find them at a few different retailers, but I usually buy mine at Nordstorm!
Talbots

Talbots is another go-to shopping destination for many women over 50. This brand has been providing women with timeless, modern, classic styles for 75 years, and their high-quality pieces last me for years and years. They provide a wide range of sizes, including plus and petite, and their pants are known for their excellent fit and quality fabrics.
J.Jill

I always love sharing about J. Jill because it’s a favorite among my readers. This brand is perfect for women who value comfort and effortless, easy-to-wear styles. Their pants often come with elastic waists, soft fabrics, and relaxed fits, making them ideal for everyday wear.

Where is your favorite place to shop for pants?

Hi Jennifer,
I really appreciated this post – so many great options!
Quick question: In picture #11, Travel Pant, can you tell me about the ‘jacket’ you are wearing? I’m looking for a simple third piece/layer (with sleeves, not a wrap) for travel. It should be navy or black, for obvious reasons (me eating on a plane), and wrinkle-resistant. Do you have any suggestions?
Keep up the great work!
Laura
I’m wearing a long EF cotton/linen cardigan because I was in Mexico. You’re hilarious and I totally relate to your comment about eating on a plane. I recommend a ponte knit blazer. They’re substantial, have stretch for comfort, and don’t look like business attire. J. Crew may have options and Eileen fisher does too. I have been wearing this one on repeat while I travel, and am now on the hunt for a longer version.
I’m a Chicos jeans fan. The size 2P fits me comfortably all day. It is hard for me to find jeans that will accommodate my fluffy waist but be small enough for my slim hips and legs. I am finding petite sizes are getting longer! Anyone else find this to be true? I’m 61 1/2” tall. I live in jeans 6 months out of the year and prefer trouser style jeans over wide leg or straight leg jeans.
I’m finding them taler these days. I think it’s to accommodate the platform and chunky soles.
I know pure blend cotton pants are a wrinkles-right-out-of-the-dryer nightmare, but how are twill pants for that these days? I haven’t bought a pair in that fabric for many years, mainly because I hate to iron clothing and tend to go for things that tumble dry and don’t wrinkle if you get them out of the dryer immediately. How are twills – any better than they used to be? (Jeans have definitely improved over the years! Especially with the addition of some stretchy materials. The old days of lying down on the bed to flatten your stomach so you can get your skinny jeans zipped up after a wash cycle are long gone!)
These days, I’m finding lots of twills are fabric blends that also have some spandex in them which cuts down on wrinkles. It has improved a lot!
I’m wearing flare leg jeans today. I really don’t wear them much. Maybe because I’m petite, or maybe I’m not used to all that fabric flopping around. I’m in the market for classic wool trousers in a subtle weave.
My go-to shop for stretch corduroy jeans is Coldwater Creek. I have these pants in just about every color and have been wearing them for years. For simple knit pants, I love L. L. Bean’s “Perfect Fit Pants” in the straight leg. They are wonderfully comfortable, and they hold their shape well.
I really love most of the outfits you were wearing in this post, Jennifer. You look casual, but very sharp.
Thanks for sharing those resources, Judy. I love comfortable and stylish.
What a great post. You covered everything! I live in jeans all year round. This time of year I usually wear dark wash jeans and a sweater too. I’ve just been wearing straight leg mostly but I’m going to try a pair of flare jeans. I love all your different colors and corduroy!
I hope you love the flares as much as I do Rosemary. The right ones are so flattering.
Great selection, thank you. I really like the black v neck on you.
Thanks for this post! I usually wear black, black and black pants. Now I know what to for in other colors. I’m saving this post!
I’m glad this was helpful.
The pink corduroy looks good on you. I would appreciate knowing what you think is the best way to launder the corduroy. Thanks.
I turn mine inside out, wash on cold gentle cycle and dry on low heat. Each fabric is different so be sure to check the labels.
This is such a great post. I find jeans constricting and don’t wear them that often. You’ve given us so many great comfy options. I’m going to try the EF corduroy pants and the Athleta travel pants. Fingers crossed they fit!
Two great options!
Jennifer…you look so good with all the fall looks, but think you should wear more color. You are a very pretty lady but the color seems to bring your pretty eyes and hair color alive. Maybe even try some color on your nails and pedi? Try it. 🙂
Thank you so much! I do wear a few colors and am adding more as I find them but feel most comfortable in neutrals.
I ordered the set that you featured on the blog on Saturday that was inspired by Frank and Eileen (the one with the long sleeved top). It arrived Monday and I have to tell you that I was pleased with the quality. I haven’t seen the F & E set in person so I can’t compare, but for the money this is an excellent alternative. The fabric is quite substantial and the two pieces seem to be well made. I could never bring myself to spend the money on the F & E set because I tend to dress more formally for travel and would not wear this set on a plane so I could not justify the cost. For casual use around the house or for quick errands, the copy cat version fits the bill quite nicely. I’m enjoying your blog very much and thanks for the great fashion find!
Thanks for letting me know!
I look forward to your post each day! I have a question about the Quince v neck and crew neck cashmere sweaters sizing. What has been your experience with the fit?
Thank you!
I like to size up so I wear medium and even own a large. I find they run true to size. I like my cashmere on the looser side because it drapes so beautifully.
The Quince v neck sweater is true to size. I wear a size 12 or large and it’s perfect. I wish they would ship to Canada so I could buy more. The quality can’t be beat.
I shop at Talbots because petite sizes are available. Then Belk and Dillard’s are my next choices, petite sizing so necessary for me. Great post with such a great review of different styles.
