Finding The Style Sweet Spot Between Comfort And Style After 50
There’s a reason Athleta for women over 50 comes up so often when I talk about everyday style. Many of us aren’t dressing to impress anymore…we’re dressing for comfort, confidence, and how we actually live. These days that might mean walking with friends, gardening, or running errands, and still wanting to look like we made a little effort.

Athleta makes that balance easy. Their clothes are soft, breathable, and forgiving in all the right places. They design with real women in mind…women who bend, stretch, and want to move throught their day in comfort. Their fit is consistent, their fabrics are durable, and they offer tall, petite, and inclusive sizing that actually feels thoughtful.
Pants and Leggings Worth Trying
Finding pants that look modern but feel comfortable can take some trial and error. Athleta’s are soft, well-cut, and durable enough to hold their shape after many wears.
Endless High Rise Pant
These Endless Pants are my go-to for days when I want to look put together and still feel completely comfortable. The fabric has a soft, refined texture that looks polished but moves easily. They travel beautifully and can even be rinsed out in a hotel sink, which I’ve done more than once.

The wide pull-on waistband is smooth and forgiving, and the straight leg has just enough drape to feel modern without being too wide. They sit at the natural waist and keep their shape through long stretches of sitting or walking.
I love that they work with sneakers, flats, or even a low boot in cooler weather. They’re one of those rare pieces that can go from a flight to dinner without ever feeling fussy. These come in 9 colors in regular, petite, and tall. FYI- they have just come out with a new Endless Flare pant, which I have on order and will report back.
Brooklyn Mid Rise Ankle Pant
These Brooklyn’s were my first Athleta pants purchase, and they’re still a favorite. They’re soft, lightweight, and a bit less structured than the Endless. They have a relaxed, modern feel without ever looking sloppy.
The waistband is described as mid-rise…but it hits me right at the waist. I love the way this cut skims the body in a fabric that resists wrinkles, and they have (all-important for me) side pockets!
Venice Jogger
I haven’t tried the Venice Jogger yet, but they look like the perfect alternative to wearing skinny leggings for exercise class or running errands. The straight leg gives them a more current shape, and the smooth waistband keeps them comfortable and easy to move in.
They’re made from a soft, drapey fabric that looks neat rather than sporty, which makes them a great option for days when you want comfort without the cling of leggings. I’d pair them with a simple tee or lightweight pullover for an easy, casual look that still feels intentional.
Salutation Stash High Rise Legging
These Salutation leggings have a bit of a cult following, and I completely understand why. They’re made from Athleta’s Powervita fabric, which is buttery soft with medium compression that gently supports without squeezing. The thickness is just right — substantial enough to smooth and flatter, but still comfortable to move in.
The wide waistband stays put, and the side pocket is perfectly placed for a phone or key when you’re out walking.
They’re easily my favorite leggings of all time. If you’ve been searching for something supportive, flattering, and truly comfortable, this is the pair worth trying. I always size up for the most comfortable fit.
Tops That Skim Instead of Cling
Athleta’s tops are made with the same thoughtful fit as their pants. They’re soft, forgiving, and designed to move with you instead of against you.
Move With Ease Top
A step up from your typical workout top, this Move With Ease top has a smooth, airy fabric that drapes nicely. It layers under sweaters or wraps and works well on its own for warm days. It comes in both short-sleeved and long-sleeved options.
Coaster Luxe Recover Sweatshirt
If you like soft without sloppy, this sweatshirt hits the mark. It’s cozy with a slightly structured fit and looks good with leggings or pants. It’s one of those tops you could wear straight from the sofa to the store and not feel underdressed.
Momentum Seamless Top
This is my favorite workout top of all time. It’s soft, fitted in all the right ways, and moves beautifully through exercise or errands. The seamless fabric feels smooth against the skin and never bunches or clings.
The no-slip grippers inside the hem are genius because they keep it in place when you bend or reach. It hits at the high hip and has just enough shape to flatter without feeling tight. It comes in tons of colors, and I also have this long-sleeve version.
Layers That Make an Outfit
A good layer can turn simple pieces into an outfit. It adds depth, polish, and that easy sense of intention we’re all after. The right one feels effortless, so you can throw it on and somehow look more pulled together without really trying.
Pranayama Restore Wrap

This super-soft Pranayama wrap is light, drapey, and instantly comfortable. It’s perfect for travel, lounging, or throwing over a tank when you need a little warmth. It comes in regular, petite, and tall sizes, in a lot of colors. I prefer the regular length because it covers the backside and gives a graceful line.
It’s one of those perfect pieces that dresses up gym wear and looks just as good over a tee and jeans. If you like cozy layers that feel a little more refined, this is the one.
Seasoft Quarter Zip
Part pullover, part sweater, this is one of those grab-and-go layers that works for most seasons. The fabric feels silky on the outside and has a brushed finish on the inside. It’s warm but not heavy, and it’s easy to wash and wear.
Forever Fleece Cloud Quarter Zip Sweatshirt
Soft enough to sleep in but nice enough to wear out. The Forever Fleece fabric feels like a cloud, and the relaxed fit makes layering easy. This bouclé is super cozy and comes in 3 colors…I especially love the Pine Green this season.
Jackets and Coats That Work for Everyday Life
Good outerwear should make life easier, not feel like another thing to wrestle with. Athleta’s jackets and coats are light, easy to move in, and practical enough for everyday errands but still look pulled together. These are the ones that actually get worn.
RainOut Ridge Long Trench
This is a great, flattering trench that keeps you dry without adding bulk. It has a clean, streamlined shape with inner cords at the waist that you can snug up for a bit of definition. The two-way zipper makes it easier to sit or move comfortably, and the hood is invaluable on windy or wet days.
It’s available in regular, petite, and tall. I’m wearing the regular in Bone, and it also comes in black. It’s the kind of coat that feels practical but still looks polished.
Salutation Jacket 2.0
This jacket fits close to the body but still moves with you. It’s lightweight, stretchy, and easy to layer over a tee or tank. The fabric feels smooth and breathable, and the cut is flattering without being tight. Ideal for walks, travel days, or just running errands when you want to look pulled together.
Aire Puffer Parka
Warm yet not bulky, this coat gives you coverage without feeling heavy. The shape follows the body instead of swallowing it, and the longer length helps on cold, windy days.
It’s lightweight yet insulated, so it keeps you comfortable without overheating. I like that it still feels flattering even when you’re bundled up, which isn’t easy to find in a puffer coat.
Why Athleta Works So Well for Women Over 50
Athleta just gets it. Their fabrics stretch and move without losing shape, and their soft waistbands are a quiet blessing for anyone who values comfort. The cuts are thoughtful, the quality holds up, and the sizing is truly inclusive.
They may cost a bit more, but they last for years and still look great. Comfortable, flattering, and easy to live in…that’s what makes Athleta a favorite for so many women over 50.
Have you tried Athleta?

Love me some Athleta! They are pricey but as you said they are comfortable, wash up well and always look good. I have several different pairs of pants and tops as well as 2 of the rain trench coats. I did not realize they now have the endless pants in a flare. Definitely something I’m going to look into.
I really appreciate the focus on more casual wear — I can’t remember the last time I actually needed a dress. That being said, I am trying to elevate my jeans and tee shirt/sweater look. If you had to select just one blazer what would you gobwith?
I would go with a knit blazer because they’re so comfy but look elevated
The Endless pants are brilliant. I wear them to the office and then to the gym over lunch. And back to the office! I don’t sweat really with my weight workouts..and I can do squats and lunges in the pants. Athleta rain coats are also the best and I have put mine through the paces. I dare say as good as my Pategonia for staying dry (and much more stylish). Have worn camping, day long deluge walking around NYC, dog walking…
Agreed! Their coats are terrific
Yes! I pack Brooklyn Ankle Pants on every trip. I have them in 4 colors!
They are featherweight, dry overnight and always look good. I do wish the side pockets were a tad deeper since my phone tends to slide out when I sit. I love the subtle fabric stripe down the leg, like a casual tuxedo pant style. I like the Endless Pant too but it’s a bit bulkier for the suitcase.
Yes, and yes!
I haven’t tried Athleta but I sure want to. It does seem like they get it. Attractive yet comfortable. The prices might be a little out of my price range but seems really worth it. Right now I’ve been wearing Baleaf and I really like that brand.
So many attractive outfits from Athleta I’d love to try but so many are made from polyester. I’ve stayed away from polyester because of how often I’d get those static shocks when I wore it. I’d spray with anti-static sprays, use dryer sheets and keep a humidifier going all winter. So far nothing has helped. Any hints?
I haven’t had that problem either Athleta clothes. Perhaps because it’s made with recycled polyester? And ideas ladies?
I love my Brooklyn mid rise. Just ordered my 6th pair in the grey..
My travel uniform for suu sure!
I think I may need that color too 😉
I love all my Athleta pieces, many featured in this article. They are great for everyday, travel and workouts. They often have great sales and a good rewards program with their credit card, which can be used at Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy as well as any merchant.
Agreed
I think think the new shorter tops really add width to the midsection. Not the look I am going for.
On a whim, I stepped into an Athleta store this week and walked out with the Forever 1/4 zip sweatshirt! The Brooklyn pants were in constant rotation for several years while teaching.
My absolute favorite slacks are the Endless slacks. Positively beautiful fit! The restore wrap, I cant live without. Athleta’s clothing lines are so comfortable and classic.
I’m with you!
Hi Jennifer. Would you please share what size you are wearing in the pranayama wrap? I’ve been eying it for quite awhile and it’s on sale, so I’m tempted! I am close to your size, an inch shorter, but think the regular length is good for your reason. Thanks for all your hard work and insights! I am always so glad to read your thoughts on fashion and life. I dress for comfort, probably a bit too much, but it comes first!
I buy the small but you can’t go wrong if it’s oversized.
I have 3 pairs of pants. Endless and Brooklyn. They are very well made and are perfect for travel, errands and can be dressed up as well. I’m over 70 and not a perfect figure and they are very flattering. Just purchased the sweatshirt and it is quite comfy. Great value for the price.
I love that the pants can be dressed up or down and are so comfy!
As far as prices. Watch for their sales that usually happen twice a year with 25% off everything!!
Good morning! I have not tried this brand, but your outfits and descriptions make it tempting. Thanks and have a great weekend 😊
Happy Friday!
I love Athleta, especially the Endless Pants for all the reasons you list. I recently purchased the
Forever Fleece Cloud Vest in Bone and Woodland, a perfect addition to stay warm and feel cute. 😊
I love Athleta. I’m over 70 and have all the shape changes that go with that age. Brooklyn’s are great for warm weather. Endless are a great anytime pant. Just got the sweatshirt. So comfy.
That’s why I love them. Polished and comfy. They’re perfect for my lifestyle.
Good Morning Jennifer, so many of these Athleta items are going on my “Dear Santa” list. And I love that the endless pant has come out in flare. Thanks for all of this information today! I want it all!
I’m really excited for my Endless flares to arrive. Fingers crossed I like them even half as much as the straight leg style.
Yes. Yes. Yes to Athleta! I love the Endless pant for travel — it is so flattering and true to size, I think. Their skorts are great for pickleball, not too long. I recently bought 3 pair of the Wayfind high-rise short for hiking and the Essential tee is a favorite of mine. Great post!
No, I haven’t tried Athleta, but you convinced me to do so!
Let us know how it goes!
I discovered Athleta thanks to you a few years back. Their items are my wardrobe staples. In fact, my husband and I spent an entire year traveling the world with carry-on only and Athleta items were the base of my packing.
That’s a great testament to their wearability. Your travels sound amazing
