How to Wear Bootcut Jeans Over 60 for a Flattering, Modern Look

I’ve watched denim trends come and go for decades now…some with fondness, others with a deep sense of relief. (Low-rise skinnies, I’m looking at you.) But bootcut jeans over 50? That’s a conversation I’ll gladly have. They’re still one of the most flattering styles out there. Just a subtle flare that skims the leg and balances proportions in a way that works on every body shape I’ve seen, including my own.

They’ve got that little kick below the knee that elongates the leg without veering into costume territory. They feel modern without trying too hard. And if you’ve been side-eyeing all the new denim silhouettes with suspicion, and are not ready to jump on the wide-leg denim train, consider this your gentle nudge. Bootcut jeans are a safe, stylish way to keep your wardrobe feeling current without feeling like you’re chasing trends that weren’t made with you in mind.

Are Bootcut Jeans Still in Style in 2025?

Every few years, someone declares that a certain jean style is “out,” only for it to quietly stick around. Bootcuts are one of those styles. They’ve never really gone away because they flatter so many shapes. While skinnies had their big moment and wide legs are everywhere now, bootcuts continue to hang in the background as a reliable option. I still see them in stores, and I see real women wearing them, which tells me they’re not going anywhere. They may not dominate the fashion pages, but they’ve earned their spot as a modern classic and a permanent spot in my wardrobe.

Are Bootcut Jeans Flattering for Older Women?

Yes, and here’s why. Bootcut jeans create balance. The slight flare at the ankle offsets wider hips, lengthens your legs, and gives symmetry if you have broad shoulders. They’re slimming without being skin-tight, and they don’t drown you in fabric. Unlike some trendier cuts, bootcuts work on many body shapes.

What’s the difference between bootcut and flare?

When I hear the word “flare,” I can’t help but picture the 70s with hems sweeping the floor and shoes hidden underneath. Some are more subtle than that, but bootcuts are even more subtle with just enough flare to skim over your shoe and balance your frame.

If wide legs feel overwhelming and flares feel like too much commitment, bootcuts land right in the sweet spot where style and practicality meet.

If you’re curious how bootcuts compare to straight leg jeans, I shared my thoughts on straight leg jeans for women over 60 here.

Getting the Fit Right

Proportion is key. If you’re short like me, stick with a narrow, barely-there flare. Too much fabric and you’ll disappear in your jeans. Look for a length that just grazes the top of your shoe. They will be long enough to keep the leg line, but not so long that you’re tripping over yourself.

If you’re taller, you can carry a bit more flare, and it will actually help balance your frame. I also recommend a mid to high rise, which smooths everything out and gives you a cleaner shape.

Not all bootcut jeans are created equal, and the right pair can make all the difference. I look for jeans with enough stretch to move with me, but not so much that they lose their shape after an hour of wear. A higher rise is usually more flattering and keeps everything smoothed out.

These are one of my favorites because the flare is so minimal that it almost doesn’t count, but it makes all the difference. They skim nicely over shoes and work especially well for petites since they don’t overwhelm a smaller frame. They also come in regular, petite, and plus sizes, making them accessible to most women.

How I Like to Style Bootcut Jeans

Bootcuts work with more shoes than you might think. My favorites are block-heel ankle boots because the proportions line up perfectly. Loafers are another good option, and a clean sneaker makes bootcuts look relaxed and casual.

For tops, I stick with pieces that aren’t too voluminous. A simple sweater, a button-down, or a fitted blouse all complement the slight flare.

I know it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by denim trends, especially when they seem to change faster than we can say “inseam.” But bootcut jeans over 60 are still going strong—for good reason. They’re flattering, forgiving, and quietly stylish without trying to be the star of the show. If you’ve been on the fence, this might be your moment to give them another look.

After all, some pieces stick around because they work—and that kind of staying power is something I’ve come to appreciate more with age.

What’s your take on bootcuts these days? Are they already in your closet, or are you thinking about trying them again?

I’m definitely a bootcut jeans girl! The ones that I’ve been wearing for the past few years are starting to show their age, so I’m going to be looking for their replacements soon.

  2. Chicos lightweight jeans are one of my favorites. I have them in wide, trouser style and that pull on kick flare you showed. But my heavier weight winter jeans are straight leg and bootcut from Liz Claiborne and Gloria Vanderbilt from good old JCP. I have to have a petite at 5’1” tall. Mine are three years old but very sturdy and perfect for my Colorado lifestyle. Also perfect for my budget!

  3. Bootcut jeans are my fav for all the reasons you gave. Whether you are dressing up or going casual they check all the boxes for me and I too, prefer the higher cut. Thanks for supporting the length – skimming the top of the shoe, much classier look.

    1. Classier is a word that’s resonating with me this fall. Maybe that’s why these unfinished hems are not my favorite now

  4. Mary Jean Cunningham says:

They’re my favorite! Could never wear skinnies or jeggings with my pear-shaped body, but boot cuts always worked for me, and I especially like my old reliable Levi’s in a dark wash.

  5. Amazing run down on the jeans styles. I like bootcuts, definitely have to check the width on different manufacturers. Straight legs are still my go to leg style and…skinnies haven’t left my rotation yet.

  6. My favorite jeans above them all, is the boot cut. As a petite they are the best.

  7. Good advice on bootcut jeans. While I often wear wide leg jeans, bootcut jeans have been a wardrobe staple in my closet for more years than I would like to admit. Just looking in the mirror you have to know that it is one of the most universally flattering shape for women. Excellent column Jennifer

    1. I’m glad you liked it Pat

  8. Boot cut jeans have never left my closet and I’m not letting them go! Have purchased the Talbot’s boot cut over and over again. Will have to try some of the other brands you showed.

  9. I love it when jeans descriptions online give measurements for leg openings! Sooo helpful when comparing to jeans already in my closet!

  10. Last fall & winter I bought several jeans from Talbot’s you featured. I love them all! I’m wearing the flares today.
I just received 2 pairs of EF white jeans that were on a great sale. I’m sad to have to wait til next spring to wear them. I’d appreciate any suggestions for wearing them in the next few weeks before the rainy weather sets in. I know you’ve had great ideas in the past.

    1. Try wearing them with a cashmere sweater and sneakers now. They also look great with the rich browns that are popular for fall.

      1. That sounds awesome! I knew you’d have a winning combination! Thank you!

  11. I am confused about all the jeans options. I’ve just been trying to wear straight leg for now since skinny jeans are out I guess. I like bootcut jeans but being petite it’s really hard to find the right length. Even if you hem them they don’t look right. So many petites are too big in the legs so I try to find juniors. Wit and Wisdom seem to the ones that fit just right for me lately.

  12. Patricia McMillan says:

If you had to pick your favorite, which boot cut jean would it be?

    1. That’s Like asking who is my favorite child! Different ones for different footwear.

  13. Thanks for validating the bootcut jean style. As someone who has struggled life long with finding jeans that fit and flatter my body type, (average height, slim hips) I happened to find a pair of bootcut, Gloria Vanderbilt jeans at Kohls that fit the bill. They are the Amanda pull on style. They have the perfect amount of stretch, stay in place, stay comfortable while seated and do not have belt loops (I don’t wear belts). The flare is quite subtle. I wear them in the cooler months with ankle boots. The denim is a medium weight.

  14. Sharon K. says:

I’ve been hemming and hawing about flares, wides, barrels and trouser jeans. But my closet houses boot cuts and straights and I’m sticking with them. Thanks for the validation!

  15. I have a large calves and I’m exhausted with trying to find the bootcut that flatters me and loosely skims my legs but still is a bootcut. Any suggestions? I’m a size 16. Thank you for your great fashion tips, my style and confidence have increased greatly over the past year!

    1. Try a flare. I just got the Chicos Girlfriend flare and they’re great. Not too large and floppy but nice wider bottom and flattering.

  16. Good morning Jennifer. My Lucchese boots would be very sad if boot cut ever go out of style. At your suggestion, I bought the brand Wit and Wisdom at the Nordstrom sale. Fabulous jeans. Thank you.

  17. I recently purchased a pair of Liz Claiborne boot cut Jeans from JC Penney and the fit and length are perfect. Only $16.00 on Clearance!

  18. I love that you’re recommending and sticking with bootcut jeans, Jennifer. They are my favorite as well (although I still have some skinny and wide leg jeans) for the reasons you gave. They fit best and are never uncomfortable, so when looking for a jean I don’t have to think about, I reach for my bootcut ones.

  19. I bought the wit and wisdom itty bitty bootcut recently via one of your previous posts. They are so nice! I’m looking forward to wearing them often when the weather cools down.
I just can’t get into the wide leg trend. I’m busty with wide shoulders and a thick waist. They just make me look like a big sloppy rectangle.

    1. That’s not a flattering look you describe so I wouldn’t like it either. Stick to your bootcut. Balance and proportion are so important.

  20. OMG! Elephant bells were my favorite in the early 70’s. Of course covered with patches which was “cool” back then. Now I prefer a straight leg which looks best on me. Bootcut is my second choice since I do like to have different styles to choose from. I do own one pair of skinny jeans and one pair of wide legs, but most often reach for the straight leg.

    1. Mine were covered in satiny patches too. They were so fun!

      1. Thanks for the update on boot cuts. I’ve been seeing lantern and barrel and other different styles. What do you make of them?

      2. I love the lantern style pant but have not added them in a jean
