Best Tankini Swimsuits For Women Over 60 That Fit And Flatter

Swimsuit shopping has a way of humbling even the most emotionally stable woman. One minute you’re looking for something to wear to the pool, and the next you’re under bad lighting, questioning fabric, fit, and wishing you had stayed home.

The solution? The tankini. They offer the flexibility of a two-piece without the exposure of a bikini or the hassle of wrestling with a wet one-piece in a restroom. When the fit is right, they’re chic, practical, and allow you to customize your coverage. Most quality tankinis are sold as separates. This is the secret to a perfect fit, so you will find tops and bottoms linked throughout this post.

Not all tankinis are created equal. The difference comes down to support, length, and whether the cut feels current or like it’s been waiting on a sale rack since 2011. We aren’t asking for magic. We just want a suit that feels secure and does not make us regret agreeing to go near the water.

Which Style Solves Your Fit Problem

Tankinis work for almost every body type. You just need to know which style solves your specific fit challenge:

  • Fuller Bust: You need underwire or a built-in bra. A V-neck or surplice neckline is more comfortable than a square or high neck.
  • Midsection Concerns: Look for ruching, a blouson silhouette, or a longer top.
  • Petite or Short Torso: Skip the tunic length, as it will overwhelm your frame.
  • Long Torso: Check for long-torso sizing specifically. Not every brand offers it, but it is the only way to get the correct fit.

The Best Tankini Swimsuits For Women Over 60

The Best For Support

The Miraclesuit Allura Crisscross is my go-to if you need structure. The draped front softens the midsection, and because it has underwire cups and adjustable straps, it provides the support a fuller bust needs and creates a smooth line without feeling like a suit of armor.

Best Tankini Top For Coverage

The Lands’ End High Neck UPF 50 Tankini is the gold standard for modesty and sun protection. It hits at the hip and offers full back coverage. It’s practical, secure, and comes in cup sizes up to DDD, so you don’t have to compromise on fit.

Best For Travel

The Tommy Bahama Playa Marbella Reversible is a lifesaver for packing light. It’s two looks in one, and the longer silhouette holds everything in place without feeling restrictive.

Best Budget Option

The Yonique Tankini is a reliable, affordable pick. It comes as a set, taking the guesswork out of matching, and is available in over 25 colors.

Best Post Surgery

The Jenna Tankini Top is designed for all-day comfort with wide, adjustable straps and a shelf bra with removable cups. The looser silhouette is ideal if you prefer less compression, and it includes prosthesis-compatible pockets. It comes in size 6-22, in many colors and prints.

Best For Tummy Concerns

The La Blanca Island Goddess Halter is a classic. The front ruching provides gentle, flattering shaping without the suffocating feel of a compression garment. The adjustable tie lets you customize the fit through the bust.

Best for Hard to Fit Sizes

The resounding favorite for consistent sizing is Lands’ End. If you struggle to find a suit that doesn’t ride up or feel too tight, this is where you start. They’ve mastered the “mix and match” system, offering petite, regular, plus, and long-torso sizing across their entire range. The logic is simple: a one-piece only fits if your torso length, bust, and hips all align with a single size, which rarely happens. With their separates, you can choose a long-torso top to prevent the “pulling” effect, and pair it with a brief that actually fits your hip measurement.

Why Separates Are a Smarter Choice

Most tankini tops are sold separately, which is actually good news. It means you can buy a different size on top and bottom, which solves one of the biggest fit problems in swimwear.

Lands’ End is the best place to start for bottoms because it carries all three styles in the same extended sizing as its tops.

Some Tankini Bottoms

There are three basic bottom styles worth knowing about. A swim brief is the most minimal option and works well if you want a cleaner silhouette. A swim short hits at mid-thigh, stays put in the water, and gives the most coverage — it’s what I’d reach for first. A skirted bottom is a good choice if you want extra coverage through the hips and thighs.

I am 75 years old. Recently I looked at some old photos from when I was 60. I was shocked at how good I looked back then. Too bad I was busy beating myself up for not looking 40 or 50, for having gained a little weight. You look great in a bathing suit and jeans that fit you and show off your great figure. Don’t give in to wearing baggy clothes or stovepipe pants.

Tankinis are great for all day wear when one has to pee and cannot pull a one piece up and down over sand, salt, sweat and sunscreen! I had trouble though finding bottoms but the sports site Baleaf has longer coverage shorts, a bit heavy on the material because they are really sportswear but a good option. They sell mostly on Amazon.

    1. Agreed! I have a few Baleaf tops and really like the fabrics.

  3. Jennifer, I have been buying Lands End tankini swimsuit tops and separate bottoms for several years. Always great quality and hold up even with machine washing on delicate cycle. I reside in SW FL so, my swimwear gets alot of use. I purchase solid colors to wear together for a 1 piece look, yet have the ease of separate bottoms for bathroom ease. Also, you can mix and match for a totally different look.

    1. I love the Lands’ End quality!

  4. Swimsuit shopping can leave me in tears. My current frustration, is getting something that has some support for my breasts, because squishing them is uncomfortable, and if I wear a suit that has only a shelf bra all day, by the end of the day they hurt. Considering sewing strapless bra cups into a suit and seeing if that helps. Thanks for the swimsuit options. Have a blessed week.

    1. Many suits do have cups sewn in. I think I’d try that first.

I was wondering if you have tried the Vivaia brand shoes. I really like the Allday pair, however seeing mixed reviews. Thank you.

    1. I haven’t tried them, but do see lots of ads for them.

Beautiful bathing suits and u look great in the one u r modeling!

  7. I love tankinis & these are all so cute. I agree Lands End is the leader for these. L.L. Bean is another good source.

  8. All of these look fabulous on you! I am firmly in camp tankini as well. It’s so much easier for me to find a good fit, since I can customize sizes and lengths. Athleta used to have options for different length tops, but this year’s styles are limited. I’ll give Lands End another look.

  9. Love tankinis! It allows me to buy separate sizes. I need a larger size on top and smaller on the bottom but I love the floral one in the navy background that looks like a one piece. Jennifer you do look terrific in a swimsuit. Thank you for showing us all of these wonderful suits.

    1. Thank you Sydney xo

  10. You must have read my mind! I was invited to a water aerobics class last night and I realized I don’t even own a swimsuit. I had an athletic style, like the first Amazon suit in the bottom thumbnails. The 3 piece with boyshorts. I felt good in that suit, but it eventually disintegrated from chlorine. I don’t shop on Amazon because I don’t trust the quality and it feels environmentally wrong to return items. Nothing more difficult than shopping for a swimsuit.

Am I the only one who has trouble removing most tankini tops? I struggle to get them over my head due to their tight fit. This year I found a black one piece with front zip from Lands’ End and am hoping it is easier to maneuver than all my tankinis! (Age 71 and apparently losing my upper body strength…).

  12. These are all really nice tankinis. I have an old one piece now that should really be replaced. One of these options would be ideal. Although I try to avoid wearing a swimsuit most of the time!

    1. I don’t wear them often either but there are times when it’s unavoidable.

  13. These are really nice options. I love the floral Tommy Bahama tankini.
You look smashing in that suit!

  14. Love, love, love tankinis! They make using the ladies room so much easier, especially when wet, and putting them on never feels like the old “stuffing 10 pounds of sausage into a 5-pound casing” ordeal with one-pieces. May the tankini live on in perpetuity!

Jennifer, I absolutely love your confidence in publishing photos of yourself in a bathing suit! You look great! You truly inspire me to give up my multiple hang-ups of wearing a bathing suit at the age of 68. Thank you so much for being an inspiration to women over 50/60/70 on so many levels!

    1. You’re so sweet, thank you. My husband takes tons of photos for me to find one I’ll post.

  16. I find a tankini to be most flattering for me. My favorite place to buy swimsuits is Land’s End. They always have great swim separates that fit well and last.

You look fabulous in a swimsuit no matter which style. Haven’t worn one in many years and not sure I ever will again. You, on the other hand, look great! Enjoy your summer and stay well!

    1. You’re very sweet, thanks. I don’t swim but do like to dip in the water to cool off.

  18. Gay Manning says:

So attractive. Not for old ladies at all!

    1. Agreed! But I’m an old lady and they’re fun!

  19. I love the Miracle black tankini , so classic, elegant. Black is like the little black dress.

    1. Agreed. Always classic

  20. If you are like me and need/like a good support bathing suit top take a look at Swimsuits For All! I was hesitant to buy a suit without trying it on but if you follow the instructions for taking your measurements you should get a great fit.

    1. Thanks for sharing that resource.
